Yes, there's cover for hurricanes and cyclones!

It should go without saying that you need to have purchased your policy before these wily whirling dervishes of destruction become a known natural disaster and have a name. This goes for tropical storms and other kinds of major weather events, too. If you buy coverage after the natural disaster is known, you aren’t covered. But, if you’ve purchased beforehand, we’ll do everything we can to help you.

Here are the coverages in the plan for US residents:

  • If the hurricane makes your primary residence or company (the place where you work and you are a decision maker that’s part of the recovery team) uninhabitable or unsuitable for business. In cases like this, you may need to cancel your upcoming trip. Let us know about the cancellation within 7 days of the loss, then when you’re ready, you can make a claim to seek reimbursement for your unused, prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Your policy may also provide trip cancellation cover if the hurricane severely damages your destination accommodations causing them to become uninhabitable or causes a complete shutdown of transportation services going to your destination for 24 consecutive hours; in both cases you may not be able to make it to where you need to go.
  • If you are already on vacation and you learn a hurricane is heading towards the beach where you lay, your policy may cover your evacuation. Let us know as soon as the evacuation advisory goes out. Our Emergency Assistance team can help you figure out the safest place to go and wait out the storm.
  • If while you are on your trip, your regularly scheduled flight is delayed for six or more hours or cancelled due to inclement weather, you may be covered under the Trip Delay

What’s not covered:

  • If the hurricane is already named and you decide to go on vacation to the area anyways (either before or after impact), you won’t be able to claim losses. This was not an unavoidable event.
  • If you purchase travel insurance after you know there’s a hurricane headed to your hometown or destination. Remember, you must purchase travel insurance prior to a hurricane becoming official.
  • General damage from the hurricane that does not otherwise leave your destination’s accommodations uninhabitable.

This is only a summary of coverage and doesn’t include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you don’t understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

When you’re ready, you can get a quote and compare the coverages in our Standard and Explorer plans side-by side. And please reach out if you have any questions – we’re happy to help.
