You’re excited, you’ve got your overseas trip booked and you’re all ready to go… then you find out you’re pregnant.

Don’t worry – this doesn’t mean you have to cancel your trip as many of our World Nomads travelers are pregnant when they travel overseas.

You do however need to check your policy as there are some additional conditions and exclusions that apply if you’re pregnant and vary depending on how far along you are.

What’s covered by travel insurance if i'm pregnant?

Timing is everything in this world and so it is with your pregnancy and travel. Check your policy closely as insurance coverage depends on how many weeks pregnant you are and your country of residence.

Assuming everything is normal with your pregnancy, you’ve met the conditions of cover, and while traveling you're suddenly ill, injured or have an unexpected pregnancy complication (including an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage), you will be covered for:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospitalisation
  • Ambulances
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation to your country of residence (if medically required)
  • Cancellation of
  • 24 hour/7 day emergency assistance team

In addition, if you have to cancel your trip because you're unfit to travel and the doctor signs off on it, you may be covered for your pre-paid, non-refundable transport and accommodation costs.

What’s not covered?

If you travel while pregnant outside the coverage timeframes you will not be covered.  In addition, you will not be covered for:

  • Any cancellation expenses if you change your mind and decide not to travel due to your pregnancy
  • If you’ve previously experienced complications in a prior pregnancy then we won’t cover you for any subsequent pregnancies.
  • Routine pregnancy check-ups, e.g. standard ultrasounds and blood tests; pregnancy tests; etc
  • Fertility treatments at any time
  • Expenses incurred in your home country.
  • Pre-existing conditions which may be exacerbated in your pregnancy

This is not a full list of what's covered and what's not covered so if you’re pregnant, have read your policy and are still unif you’ll be covered, call our team who will be able to help.

Important pregnancy dates you need to know before you travel

Insurance coverage depends on how many weeks pregnant you are so check your policy closely which will specify the pregnancy milestones you need to be aware of.

In addition, World Nomads will not cover any pregnant travellers for medical and maternity assistance including and after:

  • they reach the 26th week of pregnancy; and/or,
  • the 18th week of pregnancy when the pregnancy is the result of fertility treatment and/or you are expecting more than one child.

Conditions of cover

There are a number of conditions of cover you must meet to be eligible for insurance cover.  These include:

  • The pregnancy must be normal as determined by a medical expert and without complications
  • You must not have been previously hospitalised or received treatment for pregnancy related complications
  • The symptoms of the acute illness or injury must have begun after you booked and paid for your trip and the insurance
  • You must not have previously been pregnant and experienced complications in that, or other, pregnancy/ies

Unable to travel.

My Wife, pregnant 8 weeks and 3 days, went today to the gynecologist for a checkup following abdominal pain. The doctor diagnosed that the pregnancy was at risk and therefore she can't travel and needed complete rest.
