What am I covered for when it comes to terrorism?

Terrorism incidents can be unsettling, and it's crucial to know what your travel insurance covers when it comes to such events. At World Nomads, we want to ensure you have the information you need to make informed decisions. Here's what you should know:

Defining terrorism: cut through the confusion

Understanding what constitutes terrorism can be challenging, especially with media sensationalism. The policy wording defines ‘terrorist activity’ and ‘terrorism’ as:

  • Act(s) including for example the use of force or violence and/or the threat thereof, of any person or group(s) of persons, whether acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation(s) or government(s), committed for political, religious, ideological or similar purposes including the intention to influence any government and/or to put the public, or any section of the public, in fear.

To get covered, there's a little condition - no heads up or inkling about any terrorist stuff before it happens. Simple as that!

Medical expenses covered: healing after an attack

In the unfortunate event of a terrorist attack, your World Nomads policy covers the medical expenses associated with any injuries sustained. You can receive coverage for vital treatments, including:

  • Medical evacuation to the most suitable facility via air or road ambulance;
  • Hospital admissions and necessary treatments;
  • Day surgery and outpatient medical care;
  • Repatriation with a medical escort if deemed unfit to continue traveling (subject to pre-approval).

Consider location: factoring in medical costs

When purchasing your policy, it's worth considering that the cost of medical care varies by location. For example, a hospital visit in Bangkok might be more affordable than one in the United States. Keep this in mind to make an informed decision that suits your needs.

Cancellation and Changes: the limitations

Unfortunately, our policy does not provide coverage for cancellation or changes due to acts of terrorism or personal change of plans. We understand the frustration this may cause but want to be transparent about the scope of coverage.

No refunds for early returns: plan ahead

If you decide to return home earlier than planned due to a terrorism-related incident, please note we would only refund the unused period of insurance; if you are making a claim on your policy, no refund will be given even if you return home early. We recommend considering your travel plans carefully to avoid any potential financial impact.

Leaving belongings behind: damage claims only

In the event that you must evacuate and leave your belongings behind due to a terrorism related incident, please be aware that our policy does not cover lost or abandoned items.

Reach out for assistance: your safety matters

Your safety is paramount to us. In case of injury during a blast or other terrorist act, prioritise your safety and seek shelter. Once secure, promptly contact our emergency assistance team, so they can guide you to the nearest hospital for appropriate care. We understand the challenges of navigating foreign healthcare systems alone, and we're here to support you.

Travelling in uncertain times: surviving a terrorist attack

To help you stay prepared and resilient during your travels, our World Nomads travel safety department has compiled an informative article on surviving a terrorist attack. Take a moment to read through it and equip yourself with valuable insights.

Remember, staying informed and vigilant is essential when it comes to terrorism coverage under your travel insurance. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to us. Your safety and peace of mind are our top priorities at World Nomads.
