Am I covered by travel insurance if my passport's been lost, stolen or damaged?

If your passport has been lost or stolen while on your travels abroad, cover is available to claim for the replacement costs to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

As we’ve recently changed our insurer, please select the date you bought your policy to find out more:

Policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

Policies purchased before 1 Nov 2018 (GMT)

For policies purchased on or after 1 Nov 2018:

If your passport has been lost or stolen while on your travels abroad, cover is available to claim for the replacement costs to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

What’s covered

If your passport is lost or stolen from your person, for example, taken from your bag without your knowledge while you were carrying it OR lost or stolen when locked in a safe or safety deposit box, you can claim:
  • The reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses you have to pay whilst abroad as a result of you needing to replace a lost or stolen passport.
  • The equivalent pro-rata value of the remaining period of your passport.

What you need to do if your passport has been stolen or lost

Report the theft or loss of your passport to:
  • The local police (as soon as possible after discovery)
  • Your nearest embassy, consulate or government office so you can apply for your replacement passport. Contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team if you need help locating any of these offices.
When making a claim for your lost or stolen passport, you must provide the written police report and receipts for all costs incurred. No policy excess applies to claims related to the loss or theft of travel documents.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the policy wording for the full details on what’s covered and not covered.
Here are some of the main things that aren’t covered:
  • Any costs that you would have incurred had you not lost your passport or travel documents.
  • Any costs incurred if your passport has been left unattended at any time (except when locked in a safe or safety box) or if you do not exercise reasonable care for the safety or supervision of your passport/travel documents.
  • Anything mentioned in the General or Specific Exclusions of the policy.

Note: For policies purchased on or after 1 August 2019, your World Nomads policy is underwritten by XL Catlin Insurance Company UK Limited. For policies purchased between 1 November 2018 and 31 July 2019, your World Nomads policy is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s.
