If a violent incident has been declared a terrorist act by the US government, your policy may provide coverage for trip delay/interruption or trip cancellation.
If you’re currently traveling, you may face unexpected costs from travel delays due to a terrorist incident in a city listed on your itinerary. World Nomads plans offer trip delay coverage when flights are delayed for 6 or more hours, and trip interruption coverage may also apply if your trip can’t be completed or if it’s necessary to return home early.
Trip cancellation may also be available if a city on your itinerary has been hit by a terror attack within 30 days of your scheduled departure date. Although if you’re on an organized tour and a substitute itinerary is offered by the tour operator, trip cancellation is not available. Check your policy for all the details.
Deciding on whether terrorism should affect your travel plans? Check out this article on how to weigh the risks and rewards.
When traveling you should also consider signing up for the US Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free program that will notify you about travel alerts and warnings, as well as help family and friends contact you in case of emergency.
