One of the joys of travel is the surprise element. How about hiking through Iceland and being dazzled by the Northern Lights? Unfortunately, not all unforeseen surprises are as welcome. Sickness, injuries, or family emergencies are just a few of the unanticipated things that can abruptly halt your fun. Because you can never predict an interruption in your travels, you may want to consider travel insurance*.

What is Trip interruption Coverage?

‘Trip interruption’ is something that happens causing you to end your trip early or that makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while traveling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.

World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage as a part of our travel insurance plans, and it may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel arrangements if your plans change for a covered reason. It may also help you get home, quickly.

For example, if you paid in advance for flights and hotels, but you broke your leg and can’t continue your trip, you may get reimbursed if you can’t recover those costs elsewhere.

Sometimes you may deal with an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you are able to rejoin it later. For example, if you need to stay back in a city on your trip to care for a sick traveling companion, but then you are able meet your group later on. Your additional transportation costs could be covered to rejoin your trip. If you need to return home early for a covered reason, you may also be eligible to be reimbursed for additional transportation costs.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

The Trip Interruption benefit has many covered reasons including sickness, injury or death of yourself, a travel companion or a covered family member. Please view your state specific Plan Document as coverage varies based on the plan you purchase.

US residents may have coverage for reasons such as:

  • Sickness, injury, or death of yourself, a travel companion, a covered family member.
  • You or your travel companion being required to work unexpectedly during your trip, providing vacation leave is already approved, or you or your traveling companion are required to work due to being a full-time employee of a company that is directly involved in a merger or acquisition. Be sure to read the plan for details of this as simply responding to emails won’t cut it.
  • Weather that stops your common carrier from providing services for more than 12 consecutive hours (24 consecutive hours for the Standard plan) and prevents you from getting you to your destination.
  • Natural disasters that make your home or destination accommodation uninhabitable.
  • Military reassignment or revoked leave.
  • Terrorist incidents in your departure city or a city on your trip itinerary.
  • Unexpected jury service.
  • Mechanical failure of your scheduled transport causing delay for more than 24 consecutive hours, providing no alternative is available.
  • Life-threatening sickness, death or injury of your host which is preventing them from providing you accommodation after all
  • Closure of ski slopes due to weather or natural disasters for more than eight consecutive hours (subject to conditions, and only included in the Explorer or Epic plan).
  • Life-threatening sickness or death of a pet or service animal during your trip (only included in the Explorer or Epic plan).

What travel insurance plan should I consider?

Only you can decide what plan is best for you. Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. You can get a quote to compare both plans side by side and learn more about everything that is covered. If you have questions, contact our team and they will be happy to assist.

What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption insurance?

Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip.

Trip Delay coverage may help provide reimbursement for reasonable expenses you incur if you’re delayed for more than six hours due to a covered reason, like a documented airline delay, lost or stolen passport and more.

Trip Interruption coverage begins after you depart on your first scheduled travel arrangement, like a flight.

Our Single trip and annual travel plans all include trip interruption coverage. Our Epic and Explorer plans offer optional “cancel for any reason” benefits beyond what’s included in all plans, at an additional cost and only when you purchase within the time sensitive period. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.

What is not covered by trip interruption insurance?

If you set out on your journey and just aren’t feeling the vibe of the destination or your travel partner, trip interruption won’t cover any costs involved with ending your trip early. Some other things that may not be covered include:

  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Routine pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Participation as an athlete in professional sports.
  • Activities not listed as covered in your plan.
  • Getting hurt if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

What should you do if you need to interrupt your trip?

  • Your health and safety is our first priority. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, first contact local emergency services, then contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • If you are interrupting your trip for medical reasons, you will need to be seen by a doctor who can certify that you are not able to continue your trip.
  • Try to recoup prepaid, unused, nonrefundable expenses from your travel providers before filing a claim.
  • Save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. You may be asked to provide things like receipts from your transportation provider or tour operator, forms showing your medical expenses, or police reports.
  • You must advise us within 20 days if you are making a claim. You can log in to your member account online to start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • It’s always a bummer when something happens and your trip gets cut short. Once you are ready, take a look at some of our team’s tips on destinations around the world and get some inspiration for your next adventure.
