What is online travel insurance?

Online travel insurance lets you buy, extend, and manage your travel insurance digitally—anywhere, anytime. World Nomads offers cover for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and stolen belongings if lost by carrier, and more.

That means you can purchase, extend or make a claim online - plus you can choose between two travel insurance plans.

What’s covered by World Nomads online travel insurance plans?

World Nomads offers Australian travellers online travel insurance cover that includes essential benefits that matter the most when you’re overseas, such as:

  • Access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance.
  • Overseas medical cover: For those times when you need immediate medical assistance.
  • Cover for theft, damage or lost baggage and for personal items: Cover for delayed, accidentally damaged, or stolen luggage, personal belongings, gear, and select sporting equipment.
  • Trip cancellation coverage: For those non-refundable, pre-paid adventures when your trip is cancelled due to an insured event.
  • Adventure activities: If you're looking for travel insurance that covers adventure activities, World Nomads covers more than 220 adventure sports and activities, from skiing and snowboarding to scuba diving, adventure can be part of the ride. Please note: Additional premium may be required for certain activities such as snow sports.
  • Trip delays and interruption: If your journey is delayed or cancelled due to a covered event.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement. Contact us if you have any questions.

Which online travel insurance plan is right for me?

We know every trip is different – and so are our travellers. That’s why World Nomads offers options for different styles of travel.

Both our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans include overseas medical cover, baggage protection, and adventure activity options. The difference? Our Explorer Plan includes higher limits and extra benefits for travellers who want added protection and higher coverage limits.

Best of all, you can buy travel insurance online – even if you’re already on the road. A 72-hour waiting period applies if travel insurance is purchased outside Australia.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance doesn’t cover everything, and it’s important to know where limits apply. World Nomads doesn’t cover:

  • Incidents arising from being intoxicated by or addicted to drugs or alcohol.
  • Ongoing medical treatment once you return to Australia.
  • Delayed luggage on your return journey to Australia.
  • Unattended belongings.
  • Trip delays caused by events already known or expected.

Read the PDS carefully to understand what is and isn’t included as well as specific coverage and limitations that may apply.

Travel insurance tips for Australian travellers

  • Stay up to date with the latest travel advisories and safety information for your destination at gov.au
  • Research reciprocal healthcare agreements between Australia and your planned destination. Australia has agreements with some countries, but it’s often basic.
  • Compare World Nomads travel insurance plans online: view our travel insurance comparison table to check inclusions, exclusions, and benefit limits side by side.
  • Always read the PDS: It explains exactly what’s covered and what’s not—especially around pre-existing conditions and exclusions.
  • Buy travel insurance early: Consider purchasing as soon as you book your trip as you may be covered for a number of insured events that could cancel your trip.
  • Check your excess amount: A higher excess usually means a cheaper premium—but it also means you’ll pay more if you claim. Our policies have a fixed excess of AUD$100.
  • Store your policy details digitally: Keep your policy number, emergency contact numbers, and insurer email in your phone and email inbox.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
