What’s covered if your bags are delayed?

You may be covered for the cost of basic clothes, toiletries and medicines for personal use if your bag has been lost by your transport provider as long as:

  • Your checked-in baggage is delayed by more than 12 hours (with the delay commencing from when you reported the loss to the transport company).
  • You’ve completed a Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.) with the airline before leaving the arrival location (you’ll need a copy to support your claim).
  • You have lodged a claim for compensation against the airline before leaving the arrival location (you’ll need a copy to support your claim).
  • You have obtained a copy of the Occurrence Report issued by the Police or official body where applicable.
You must keep your luggage tickets and receipts of purchases as you will need these to support your claim.

You should also note that you are not covered if the delay occurs on the return journey to your home or where you live.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Unfortunately, travel insurance is not designed to cover everything. You will not be covered when:

  • Your luggage is damaged, regardless of what caused the damage, if you are traveling on our Standard Plan (note: damage is covered on Explorer and Explorer Plus plans, up to the limits listed in your policy).
  • Your luggage is confiscated or seized by Customs or any other governmental authority.
  • Your baggage has not been delivered to the carrier.
  • All hand luggage.
  • Your baggage contains animals, cash, checks, bonds, stamps, collections, documents of any kind.
  • You do not collect your luggage as soon as it is available.

There are limits on the amount you can spend so before you go shopping for a new wardrobe, check your policy carefully on the limits, conditions and exclusions which may apply before you buy. If you have questions, get in contact with our emergency assistance team.

Items you can claim if your bags are delayed:

  • T-shirt(s)
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Toiletries
  • Prescribed medication
  • Reasonable & necessary essential items (check your policy for details)

Items that aren't covered if your bags are delayed: 

  • Designer jeans to replace your fisherman's pants
  • A new ball gown for that special event
  • Tailor made suit
  • Leather jacket
  • Other non-essential items you can live without for a few days

Baggage Delay in a Delhi Winter.

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. It was cold in Delhi (being winter, December) and my warm jacket was in my bag, requiring that I purchase a jacket and other items of warm clothing that I had not taken in my carry-on.
