Pubic Accident!

I cut myself on my prepuce unintentionally while I was shaving my pubic hair with a razor early in the morning. The cut hurt a little, but it quickly infected while I was in between places, traveling. I had to quickly go to the nearest hospital because it started to hurt considerably and I noticed it was swelling up quickly and getting red.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about travel accidents insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Does my insurance pay for my accident upfront or do I have to pay and claim?
Who pays depends on what’s happened! If it’s an emergency situation where hospital admission and/or medical evacuation is required, the insurer covers these costs upfront (provided the incident is covered as per the policy wording, of course). You must contact the Emergency Medical Assistance team as these costs must be pre authorised by the insurer.

Does travel insurance cover terrorism or war?

Find out how we could help if you're caught up in a terror attack.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • Travel insurance may cover emergency medical treatment, evacuation, and medical assistance if you’re affected by an unexpected terrorist incident overseas.
  • Most policies do not cover claims related to war, civil unrest, or travel to destinations under a “Do Not Travel” warning.
  • Trip cancellations due to fear of terrorism or conflict are generally not covered. Cancellation cover is excluded for threats or acts of terrorism. Our policies also exclude losses arising from a change of mind, disinclination or reluctance to travel.
  • Government travel advisories can impact both your safety and your travel insurance cover.
  • Before travelling overseas, always check your policy terms and conditions, limits, and exclusions, and whether your destination has changing security risks or travel warnings.
  • There is no cover under any section of our policy for a loss arising from any act of war (whether war is declared or not).

Global travel is becoming more unpredictable, with ongoing conflicts, terrorism threats, airspace disruptions, and changing government travel warnings affecting destinations around the world.

If you’re planning an overseas trip it’s important to understand what your travel insurance may and may not cover if war, civil unrest, or a terrorist incident impacts your journey.

Knowing what you’re covered for before you travel can help you make informed decisions and avoid unexpected costs if your plans change unexpectedly.

When is it no longer safe to travel?

Your travel insurance plan may provide cover for your selected destinations unless a “Do Not Travel” warning has been issued by the U.S. Department of State or another official authority and you choose to travel anyway.

Please note that your policy will not cover losses arising from:

  • Travelling to a country or region subject to a “Do Not Travel” warning
  • Planning to travel to these destinations
  • Choosing to remain in these areas after warnings have been issued
  • Any consequence whether direct or indirect of war, invasion, act of foreign enemy, hostilities (whether war is declared or not)
  • Any consequence whether direct or indirect of terrorist activity. (This exclusion does not apply to Emergency Medical & Dental Expenses Overseas (Section 1) where you or a member of your travelling party are injured or die due to terrorist activity and where neither you nor they actively engaged in or participated in terrorist activity nor chose to go to an area where there was terrorist activity following warnings against travel to the area made by the U.S. Department of State.)

When you may be covered

You may be covered if:

  • You’re injured during an unexpected terrorist incident
  • You require urgent medical treatment overseas
  • You need emergency medical evacuation approved by us

When you’re unlikely to be covered

You’re unlikely to be covered if:

  • You cancel your trip due to fear of terrorism or war
  • You travel to a high-risk destination against official advice
  • You buy travel insurance after an incident has already occurred

For more details, or if you have a specific question about World Nomads travel insurance, please visit our online Help Center or contact us.

What travel insurance may cover

If a terrorist attack is unexpected, depending on your travel insurance plan and your country of residence, your travel insurance plan may provide cover for:

  • Overseas emergency medical treatment, including hospital care, outpatient treatment, and medications
  • Ambulance and medical transport
  • Emergency medical evacuation or repatriation back home, if approved by us
  • Access to 24/7 emergency assistance support
  • Help contacting family members or consular services

Important: Cover generally only applies if the event was unforeseen and you followed official government travel advice. For the latest travel alerts and safety information, visit

What’s not covered

Travel insurance doesn’t cover every situation involving terrorism or conflict. Common exclusions may include:

  • Trip cancellation due to terrorism or war
  • Changing your mind about travelling
  • Purchasing travel insurance after an incident occurs
  • Travelling against a “Do Not Travel” warning
  • Leaving baggage or personal belongings behind

Always check your policy wording carefully for full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

How to get help in an emergency

If you’re caught in an emergency situation overseas:

  • Move to a safe location immediately
  • Seek medical assistance if required
  • Contact the 24/7 emergency assistance team as soon as possible

Be ready to provide:

  • Your policy number
  • Your current location
  • A contact number

Does Travel Insurance Cover Terrorism?

Find out how we could help if you're caught up in a terror attack.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Our travellers know that staying aware at all times is key to staying safe, but there are some things you can never anticipate, and a terrorist event is one of those.

A terrorism event is defined as: An event that has been declared a terrorism event by the government of your country of residence or by the government of the country where the event happened, not including a terrorist attack that involves the use or threat of nuclear, chemical, or biological devices or cyber terrorism.

What can travel insurance cover if there's a terrorism event?

In the event of a terrorist attack, our travel insurance (Explorer Plan only) offers limited cover:

You cancel or cut short your trip: If a terrorism event occurs within 20 kilometres of your booked accommodation within 7 days of your trip start date or while you are on your trip. The Explorer plan may cover for your non-refundable expenses, and if your trip is cut short, some additional expenses incurred to get home, too.

You decide to stay and travel: If you decide to stay and travel, as long as there is no directive from the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence advising you to leave the area/to not travel to the area, your cover will continue.

You’re injured or die in a terrorist attackIf you’re injured or die in a terrorist attack, our policies may provide cover for emergency medical and dental expenses abroad. You can’t have travelled against the advice of the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence advising against All Travel, or participated in the terrorist activity (obviously).

You miss your flight or it is delayed: You are unable to reach your departure point, flight is delayed or your return flight home is delayed due to a terrorism event. The Explorer plan may offer cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses.

You are forced to move from your pre booked accommodation: You are on your trip and after checking in, you become aware your pre booked accommodation is uninhabitable due to a terrorism event. We will pay for the same standard of accommodation if you are forced to move into an alternative at the same destination, if your travel provider does not provide an alternative.

If you have to leave where you are staying and leave your stuff behind: If you are told that you have to evacuate the country you are in and you leave personal belongings behind, there will be cover under this policy (up to the maximum benefit limits).

Our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team can help you navigate next steps if you’re caught up in the chaos and aftermath of an attack.

What’s not covered by travel insurance if there's a terrorism event?

Terrorist events are understandably traumatic. However, if you’re worried one might occur, or following an attack you want to travel elsewhere or return home, we may consider that to be a change of mind in the circumstances, and we won’t cover you for those costs to change your plans.

In addition, our policy does not cover:

  • Non-medical evacuation
  • If you change your mind.
  • Travelling against a non-essential advisory and the cause of the claim relates to the advisory.
  • Buying a policy after the event happens will not cover you for any event-related injuries

You must also remember that if you knowingly put yourself in danger, or are aware of events that may lead to a claim, this is excluded under the policy. This means if there’s a warning of a terrorist attack or you were likely to have had knowledge there might be one, and you put yourself at risk by travelling to or staying in the vicinity of that area, then your cover may be excluded.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

How to get help if you're hurt in a terrorism event

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team as soon as possible so that our teams can support you from the time your fall sick or get injured until the time you get home.

Travel Insurance for Lost or Stolen Passports

We know how difficult it is to be overseas without a passport so we’ve designed our travel insurance to give you the extra level of support you need to get a replacement passport.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Four simple steps to take if your passport is stolen

1. Report the incident to local authorities

File a police report as soon as possible and obtain a written document confirming the theft. This will be required for both the embassy and travel insurance claims. Relevant authorities may include:

  • The local police.
  • Your nearest embassy, diplomatic or consular mission for your country of citizenship.
  • For visas and passports from other countries – contact the relevant embassy.
  • Any other relevant authorities, such as the airline, hotel or tour operator.

Important: For certain countries, it is an offence not to report the loss or theft of your passport as soon as you learn of the loss. It may also affect your travel insurance cover if you don't report it immediately. Contact us if you need help with this.

2. Obtain a replacement passport

Reach out to the nearest embassy or diplomatic mission of your country of residence to begin the process of obtaining an emergency passport or a replacement. To organise a replacement, you may need:

  • A passport photo,
  • ID (driver's license or expired passport),
  • Evidence of citizenship (photo of your missing passport),
  • Your e-tickets or itinerary,
  • You may also need a police report.

If you need to travel to a different location to apply in person or collect your emergency passport, you should arrange to do this.

3. Rearrange or cancel any travel plans and keep documents handy

As soon as you know that your travel plans are affected, contact any accommodation, tour, transport and other providers to rearrange or cancel any plans you may have.

Make sure you get confirmation from them in writing of the changes or cancellation and keep receipts and details of any refunds or extra fees paid. Always keep a record of the police report, embassy correspondence, and any receipts for related expenses.

4. Notify your travel insurance provider

If you have a policy with us, tell us. Contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team to guide you through the process.

Travel insurance coverage for stolen passports

Having travel insurance can help mitigate the financial and logistical challenges of replacing a stolen passport. Key areas of coverage include:

  • Emergency passport expenses: Some policies may cover the cost of obtaining an emergency passport.
  • Additional travel expenses: If the theft results in delays or itinerary changes, certain policies may help cover costs.
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance: We can assist in locating the nearest embassy, translating documents, and guiding you through the claim process.

What do I need to make a claim?

  • Reports from local police, common carriers, service providers and any other relevant parties.
  • Receipts for passport processing fees.
  • Copies of all documentation provided by your country of residence’s government.
  • Receipts for pre-paid, non-refundable accommodations and any additional expenses incurred, should it apply to your case.

By taking proactive steps and understanding your insurance coverage, you can handle passport theft more efficiently and reduce its impact on your travels.

To find out more about how to make a claim click here.

Important exclusions and limitations

Understanding the limitations of travel insurance can help prevent claim issues. Common exclusions include:

  • Negligence – Claims may be denied if the passport was left unattended or not properly safeguarded.
  • Lack of documentation – A valid police report is typically required for a successful claim.
  • Confiscation by authorities – If a government official takes your passport, insurance usually does not cover this.
  • Full replacement cost – Most policies only cover emergency passport fees, not the full cost of a new passport.

Preventative measures to protect your passport

  • Before travelling – Make photocopies and store digital backups in a secure, accessible location.
  • During travel – Keep your passport in a safe or secure bag and avoid carrying it unnecessarily in crowded places. Travel with some spare passport-sized photos just in case. Emergency passports do not permanently replace your passport. They can be issued quickly with limited validity so you can return home or continue with your trip.

What’s not covered by travel insurance for a lost or stolen passport?

While we’ll help cover the cost of replacing your passport, some of the things we won’t cover include:

  • Costs related to the time involved in replacing your passport.
  • Stolen passports if left unsupervised such as if you left it behind somewhere, mislaid it or if you didn’t take reasonable care to protect it.
  • Stolen passports when the theft was not observed when occurring.

Passport stolen in Bulgaria.

I was trying to go back home by taxi. But I had to change taxi and walk for 30m to get another taxi. It was 7pm and dark. At the time, I was surrounded by 3 or 4 men. A man choked me and another guy tore off my small bag, and they ran away. There were a camera, passport, watch, wallet with 300 rand and credit card, cellphone, USB Internet modem and so on. I explained to taxi driver and he helped me to bring home without pay. And my house owner helped me to go to police station and explained everything.

Passport stolen in Bulgaria.

My wallet was stolen in a bus in Bulgaria, and I could not reach the thief. I could just see she was a woman. I lost my passport, my driving licence, and some other stuff such as some cash. I made a police report regarding the matter, which is in Bulgarian language. It says e.g. my passport and my driving lisence were stolen. I had to go to Finnish Embassy of Bulgaria to get a new passport. However, they only issued emergency passports so that is what I had to get. However, that only lasted for a month, and I had to get another proper passport (for 5 years -my previous passport before the theft was obviously this 5 year passport as well) now in Finnish Embassy of Sweden where I was at that time. Driving licence I could renew only in Finland, and because I came to Finland for the first time after my trip now during the summer 2015, I renewed my driving licence at this time.

Trip Resumption: What's covered by travel insurance?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return home because you were sick or injured overseas, or one of your close relatives has been hospitalised or has died, certain World Nomads policies can cover reasonable transport and accommodation expenses to get you back on the road so that you can finish your trip.

Your policy still needs to be valid when you resume your trip and needs to be the one that you were traveling on when you had to return home.

Cover depends on your country of residence, and the limits depends on the policy that you choose, so make sure you read your policy carefully.

Trip Resumption: What's not covered by travel insurance?

  • Any expenses incurred while you're at home
  • Expenses to get you back on your trip, if you went home because you're home sick
  • A business class upgrade where you've been flying budget airlines
  • Resumption if your policy has expired

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions that apply, so for more information check out our article on trip resumption and read your policy carefully before you buy.

Be prepared if you need to claim for trip resumption.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors/death certificates
  • Medical history (ruling out pre-existing conditions)
  • New flight tickets

Grandma in palliative care.

My Grandmother suffered an acute Subarachnoid Haemorrhage after having a fall and was subsequently placed in Palliative Care in November. Travel Insurance for Medical Evacuation & Repatriation

Get the help you need wherever your adventure takes you

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • Medical evacuation travel insurance covers the cost of transporting you to the nearest appropriate medical facility if you’re seriously injured or ill overseas.
  • Medical repatriation insurance covers the cost of returning you to Australia when ongoing treatment is required.
  • Adventure ready with cover for 220+ sports and activities including hiking and trekking.
  • Simple online claims process and 24/7 global emergency assistance.
  • Always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to understand what’s included and excluded.

When you travel off the beaten track, medical help isn’t always close by. In remote regions, a simple injury or sudden illness can quickly turn into an emergency that requires helicopter evacuation, air ambulance transport, or repatriation home, these can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

That’s where World Nomads travel insurance comes in. With 24/7 Emergency Assistance, we’re here to help you get to the right medical care, at the right time.

Why medical evacuation and repatriation matter

Medical evacuation and repatriation are some of the most expensive travel emergencies and they’re not covered by standard healthcare once you’re overseas.

Travel insurance for medical evacuation may help when:

  • You’re injured or seriously ill far from adequate medical facilities
  • You need emergency transport by road ambulance, helicopter, or air ambulance
  • You need to be transferred to a better‑equipped hospital in another city or country
  • Doctors determine you need to return home for ongoing treatment

Medical repatriation and evacuation services we offer

If you’ve selected the right level of Sports and Activities cover for the activity you’re doing, there’s cover available in all of our plans, where medically necessary, for medical repatriation and evacuation by:

  • Air Ambulance
  • Sea Level Aircraft
  • Helicopter
  • Ground Ambulance
  • Commercial airline upgrade
  • Commercial airline with medical accompaniment

Depending on your Country of Residence and the policy you buy, there are limitations that will apply. So, it’s a good idea to do some research on where you’re going, so you can pick the travel insurance plan that’s best for you.

What will we cover you for?

If you are ill or injured and need help getting medical assistance the first step is always to contact our Emergency Assistance team and let us know what is going on.

Depending on what's happened to you, we may:

  • Transport you via ambulance or other means to adequate medical facilities nearby.
  • Evacuate you to medical facilities in another country.
  • Transport you back home to your country of residence to receive medical support.

If medical repatriation is approved, cover may also include:

  • Reasonable additional travel expenses to get you home
  • Travel, accommodation, and local transport expenses for a friend or close relative who needs to be with you during your medical repatriation home

If the worst happens, cover is available for either:

  • Transporting your remains home, or
  • Cremation overseas and return of ashes

Important: Medical evacuation or repatriation must be pre‑approved by us. If you arrange transport yourself without approval, you may not be covered.

What we won’t cover

Before agreeing to any transport home, approval is required. We won’t cover:

  • Expenses that aren’t reasonable or approved
  • Transport you refuse when deemed medically necessary
  • Pre‑existing medical conditions (as defined in your policy)
  • Any costs not authorised by us
  • The cost of a return flight home if you don’t already have one booked. Why? Because the cost of a return flight is considered a normal travel cost.
  • Any costs you incur once you are returned to your country of residence.
  • The policy excess amount as shown in the Policy Wording.
  • Anything else that's listed in the section exclusions and General Exclusions in the Policy Wording.

Why must I contact the Emergency Assistance team first?

Because the Emergency Assistance team are experts who can arrange your helicopter evacuation using a reputable company and work with us to guarantee their payment.

Wherever possible, contact the emergency assistance team yourself or ask a friend to do it for you.

Beware of scammers

This is because we have had cases where some unscrupulous operators and guides say they’ve received our go-ahead when they haven’t so it’s best if you contact the emergency assistance team yourself. ALWAYS contact the Emergency Assistance Team if helicopter evacuation is medically necessary as this way, you are in safe hands.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for emergency evacuation and repatriation. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Am I covered for trekking in Nepal?
Our policies may offer cover for hiking and trekking up to 6,000 meters in elevation with the appropriate level of Sports and Activities cover. Keep in mind that you may require a policy upgrade to be covered. We do not offer cover for hiking and trekking above 6,000 metres, free mountaineering, climbing in remote or inaccessible regions, exploratory expeditions and new routes, high altitude climbing over 6,000 metres, mountaineering expeditions or activities within Antarctica, the Arctic Circle or Greenland. See "What's not covered" for each section and the General Exclusions in the Policy Wording for more information.
  • Am I covered for helicopter evacuation?

Medical evacuation from the mountains by helicopter may be covered when it is medically necessary. Please keep in mind that you, or a member of your travelling party must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team before any helicopter evacuation can be arranged. If you do not do this, you may not be covered.

  • What if I’m far away from medical care?
Depending on where you are and the circumstances, we'll find the most suitable medical facility and mode of transport to get you to safety, whether it’s a road ambulance or helicopter ride (where medically necessary), or any other suitable means. And if the situation calls for it, we may even organise air ambulances and flight upgrades to repatriate you back to your country of residence.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
