Essential travel insurance tips for travelling through India

India is a destination like nowhere else in the world. Steeped in sacred tradition, ablaze with colour, and emanating a culinary aroma all its own - the moment you step off the plane in India your entire being is enraptured. But just because a country has captured your heart and soul doesn’t mean a jaunt through its wonders will come hassle free.

Keep the harmony in balance with these essential tips that can help us help you if ever the need arises.

Culinary delight or medical emergency?

So you’ve arrived in India, homeland of tikka, korma, and madras curry. There’s just one little thing lurking, ready to knock you and your travel plans off their feet… gastro!

Otherwise known as “Rangoon runs,” “Delhi belly”, or just plain diarrhea, it singlehandedly derails more Nomads’ trips to the Taj than any other insurance claim in India. Many Nomads have experienced gastro before and know the standard precautions to take: check the seals on bottles, wash your hands, and only eat steaming hot food that’s cooked in front of you.

What you may not be ready for is the impact of a full-blown episode of authentic, Indian-food inspired gastro that scoffs at the western medicine you may have in your backpack and throws it back in your face… literally. Indian gastro typically hangs around a lot longer than you might expect if not treated with the right medication early. Combine that with the often-unrelenting heat of an Indian summer, and dehydration can leave you very ill.

To find out more about what you may be covered for when it comes to health emergencies check out our travel health article.

How can World Nomads’ travel insurance help with Delhi belly?

We recommend travelers with a World Nomads policy contact us earlier rather than later if they get a bout of gastro in India – we really don’t want you to miss seeing the Taj or, even worse, your connecting flight to your next destination.

A local operator can help you place a reverse charge call to our 24-hour, 7 days a week team who are trained to deal with these situations, or you can look to claim back the cost of the call later. We’ll be able to give you info on what to do next, help locate local suitable medical facilities where you can be seen by a medical professional who can prescribe antibiotics or other medication and, if necessary, arrange hospitalization depending on the severity of your gastro.

Policies vary depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you’ve chosen. Cover can include emergency local medical expenses and the costs of your trip being interrupted if the furthest you’re able to travel is to the toilet and back.

Find out how to (try to..) avoid Delhi belly and stay healthy while in India with these top tips.

Lightening your load… and your valuables

Before you hop on that 15-hour Mumbai to Goa bus, there are some things you need to know, because if you don’t take the right precautions, your policy may not cover you for theft. Cover varies depending on the plan you’ve chosen and your Country of Residence (so make sure you read the policy terms and conditions), but generally, travelers must be able to show they took “reasonable care” to protect their valuables.

In India, this means if you leave your bags where they might be rifled through – such as at your feet on a busy bus, in the train baggage compartment or with people you’ve only just met – you may not be covered. Beautiful India… gorgeous, exotic, stunning and oh so dangerous for the unprepared. Before you head off on the Spice Trail, here are the top 3 tips to help protect yourself and your gear.

Consider protecting yourself and your gear

If your country’s government advice is to not travel to a particular area in India, your travel insurance can be void if you book or travel there. Lock your luggage and use under-clothing wallet holders for important documents, passport, and credit cards, with a small amount of rupee on hand for the journey’s expenses. Take turns sleeping on public transport, never leave your bags unattended or with someone you’ve just met, and always stay aware.

One of our Nomads reported having his bag stolen from under his sleeping head, so if it’s not zipped in, padlocked, and secured out of sight, you may lose it. Before you travel, make sure you have receipts for your valuables, and keep your passport, bank details, and photocopies throughout your bags. You will need a police report to claim, and even though those local Indian police stations can be frustrating to deal with. Do try to get something in writing and document everything you do – the more information you can provide with your claim, the better.

Steer clear of scams

Like pickpockets, scams are rife in India. The good news is if you know how to spot a scam before you go, you’re less likely to fall victim to the often-convincing trap of a scam.

Places like tourist attractions, train stations, and bustling streets are a free for all peppered with dodgy scammers on the lookout for fresh travelers. This article on ‘How to Avoid Common Scams When Traveling in India’ is a good place to become acquainted with how to spot a scam when you’re presented with one. But if there’s a key takeaway it’s reminding yourself if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Hidden treasure or dangerous conflict zone?

If you want to go off-the-beaten-track in India, you really need to do your research first to ensure you’re not going to void your travel insurance, or worse, end up in jail, injured, or dead.

As they’re often disputed and unmarked, borders between India and its neighbors can be particularly risky to travel to.

If your country’s government advice is to not travel to a particular area in India, your travel insurance can be void if you book or travel there, intentionally putting yourself in harm’s way. Common areas that many countries recommend you do not travel to in India include:

  • In the north: the areas of Jammu, Kashmir and Srinagar (including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg) experience sporadic terrorist activity and violent demonstrations, which travelers might get caught up in.
  • To the west: various warnings exist for the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab due to landmines and unexploded ordnance.
  • To the east: areas in Assam bordering Bangladesh, and areas in Manipur and Nagaland bordering Myanmar may be “No Travel” areas due to the risk of insurgency.

Encountering mishap while on the road is never fun, and even worse, with void travel insurance, if anything goes wrong, you’re entirely on your own.

Always check your insurance policy and your government’s current list of travel warnings before you book your travel to India. World Health Organization can also provide the latest updates for travelers headed to India. If you’re not sure, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink the water in India?

This is a firm no. Tap water in India is not safe for drinking, brushing your teeth, or slurping in the shower. It’s also advisable to stay away from foods that may have been washed with tap water, such as lettuce and other salad items. A good rule of thumb is if it’s not cooked or peeled it’s not safe. And don’t forget to say ‘no thanks’ to ice cubes in your drink - they’ve been made from tap water.

What vaccines do I need when traveling to India?

While no specific vaccination is required to enter the country—unless you’re traveling to India from a yellow fever affected region—most home countries will recommend some vaccinations. These typically include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and meningitis. Speak to your medical provider well in advance of your trip to ensure you’re properly covered.

Is malaria an issue in India?

Yes, malaria continues to be an issue throughout India. While the risk of contracting malaria in areas such as Delhi is lower, it’s still possible. Seek out medical advice before traveling to India to ensure you’re protected from malaria while overseas.

Travel insurance for Italy

Explore la dolce vita

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

There are more hidden gems in Italy than there are varieties of pasta and gelato, from sampling limoncello while watching an Amalfi sunset, swimming the turquoise waters of Lake Garda, or visiting the World Heritage-listed site of Pompeii.

When you head to the Bel Paese, you’ll no doubt have an unforgettable trip; World Nomads just wants to help make sure it’s unforgettable for the right reasons.

What's covered

With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance when you book your trip from home or while you're already traveling around Italy. All our plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any optional extras or upgrades you add. Always make sure you read the policy wording carefully.

Will I need a Schengen Visa to go to Italy?

Yes! When in Italy it’s very important to have a valid passport and a Schengen visa if you’re not a European citizen as this will help you move freely around the 27 EU member states. Depending on the Schengen country where you are applying for the visa, authorities may ask you for a Schengen visa letter.

If you’re not a resident of a Schengen visa country, you will need to get a valid Schengen visa to move freely in the 27 EU member states. Before you can get your visa, you'll need valid travel insurance.

Going off season

It’s a good idea to visit Italy in the shoulder seasons, especially if you want to avoid large crowds and want cheaper flights and accommodation. Many of the main cities in Italy in the summer months will be full of tourists. If you do go outside of peak season – either in the autumn months (September to November) or the spring months (March to May) - flights may be cheaper, as will hotels and even shops.

Also, if you do go in the peak season, it may be a good idea to go off the beaten path and visit some of the lesser known, but still incredible, Italian cities and regions. For example, Locorotondo in Puglia, Trento in Trentino, Mantua in Lombardy, and Tropea in Calabria.

Check out our travel alerts to stay up to date on any travel restrictions or travel changes for Italy.

Pickpockets and other scammers

Italy might be the home of high fashion brands, but even a humble backpack can draw attention here, thanks to pickpockets. Always be vigilant with your personal items, especially in crowded areas where you’re likely to get jostled, especially on the buses, metros and trains, and busy tourist sights.

What to do if your gear is stolen

  • If the worst happens, and you realize your personal effects have been stolen or damaged, you may be eligible for coverage on the loss, subject to claim assessment.
  • As soon as you’ve noticed your bags have been stolen or damaged, report it to the relevant authority (carrier, tour operator, accommodation provider). In the case of theft, you’ll also need to report it to the local police or relevant authority.
  • Generally, insurance won’t cover things such as losing bags or valuables that are left unattended. Remember to always keep originals or copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.

When it comes to theft, prevention is best, check out our top 5 safety tips for Italy article before you go.

Planning on an adventure?

If you’re planning on skiing down the snow-dusted slopes in the Dolomites or cycling through cinematic Tuscany, World Nomads has you covered with cover for more than 150 adventure activities and sports.

Additional premiums may apply, depending on your Country of Residence. Your choice of a Standard or Explorer plan may also determine what activities are covered. Just select your Country of Residence to see those that apply to you. If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us.

24/7 Help if you fall sick or get injured

In a medical emergency, say an injury or equipment failure that leaves you on your derrière, it’s comforting to know you can contact World Nomads for 24/7 Emergency Assistance. They can help you find care nearby, communicate with doctors, and even assist with any paperwork that you’ll need for out-of-pocket expenses. (While Italian citizens have nationalized healthcare, visitors from non-EU countries may have to pay for the cost of their treatments.) With a World Nomads policy, you may be covered up to a maximum benefit for emergency accidents and sickness medical expenses.

Trip delays

One of the most common reasons World Nomads gets a worried call from travelers is an unforeseen travel delay. Maybe local train employees are on strike or the bus you booked has been in a road accident.

Depending on the plan selected, with a World Nomads policy, you could get reimbursed for any expenses you incurred and even a one-way ticket home if the delay is caused by an event specified in your policy and sets you back for a certain amount of time. Just be sure to keep your receipts and copies of your rescheduled itinerary.

Whatever you’re planning, be sure to read over your policy carefully and contact customer service if you have questions.

What's covered

With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or when you’re already enjoying your trip around Spain (waiting periods apply), it’s entirely up to you.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each provides different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. Here are some of the highlights of our cover:

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation.
  • More than 150+ activities, sports, and experiences.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Travel delays /interruption.
  • Baggage and high-end valuables.
  • 24/7 worldwide Emergency Assistance.

Why should I consider travel insurance for Spain?

Travel insurance could help just in case you land in Barcelona, but your baggage doesn’t, you suffer a travel delay, you or your travel buddy catches COVID-19, or you need to be medically evacuated. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you have chosen, our policies may cover you for:

  • Emergency medical and evacuation - if you become ill or are in a serious accident that requires emergency treatment or evacuation, your policy may cover you for medical and surgical treatment, hospital fees, and in some cases, specialist counselling. Benefit limits apply.
  • Baggage and personal belongings - in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally damaged or stolen, you may be able to claim for those items. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours (more than 12 hours for US residents), you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions apply.
  • Activities coverage - we cover more than 150 activities worldwide – including backpacking, kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan, you can read about the activities covered for your Country of Residence. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Cover for Coronavirus-related events: depending on your Country of Residence World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits apply and vary between plans.

What should I look out for when traveling around Spain

As fun and fascinating as Spain can be there are some things you should be aware of, such as:

Crime in Spain’s hotspots

Wandering around the streets of Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville can be a wonderful experience, but you need to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight. Watch out for bag snatching, pickpockets, and theft from cars. We offer cover if you're after travel insurance for your tech gear and other high value items. To upgrade the cover for high value items, list them on your policy and pay the additional premium. Make sure you have copies of all key documents you’re traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets, etc.

Illness in Spain

Falling ill remains a risk in all regions of Spain, COVID-19 included. If you're in Spain and you are feeling unwell, call 112 for medical emergencies. You can always get in touch with the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team. Make sure you’ve checked our Coronavirus cover article if you have caught COVID-19.

Natural disasters in Spain

Spain experiences earthquakes, severe storms, and forest fires. Always do your research for updates. On 19 September 2021 there was a volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands. Due to the eruption, flights and travel plans were sent into disarray for people traveling to and from the Canary Islands. While we do offer cover for natural disasters, for those policies that do cover natural disasters in one way or another, you'll need to have bought a policy before the natural disaster event is known and do everything you can to minimize your expenses. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits apply and vary between plans.

Have fun at festivals but don’t overdo it

When going to party hotspots and festivals in Spain it’s important to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you're traveling solo and don’t know the language. We suggest not to overdo it when it comes to drinking and be careful of accepting drinks from strangers especially at big events. Remember that while we do offer cover for overseas travel accidents such as, hospitalization, day surgery and out-patient treatment, and prescribed medicines, you won’t be covered if you’re on drugs or have been drinking alcohol excessively or if you’ve been acting illegally.

What's not covered

Here are some of the things we do not provide cover for:

  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

Read on to find out how World Nomads’ travel insurance can help you navigate the unknown while overseas.

What’s covered

World Nomads offers two types of travel insurance plan, Standard and Explorer. Each plan provides different levels of cover so it’s important you choose the plan that best suits your travel plans and the level of cover you need. Depending on your Country of Residence your travel insurance plan can offer cover for:

  • Baggage and personal effects
  • Extended stays
  • Overseas medical emergencies and hospital expenses
  • Travel delays and trip interruption
  • A wide variety of sports, activities and experiences.
  • Trip cancellation
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team
  • And many more cover options and extras…

Whatever your choice of overseas vacation, it’s important to choose the right level of coverage. Read the policy wording, browse the World Nomads’ Help Center, or contact our customer service team to see if what you’re planning to do is covered under your plan.

What’s not covered

It’s important to remember travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. While we endeavor to help you during times of need while you’re overseas there are some things that we simply do not cover. These include:

  • Activities and sports: participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording, or one that's offered by World Nomads, but you haven't paid the required additional premium.
  • Not following doctor’s orders: disobeying your treating doctor’s directions and/or those of our Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Leaving valuables unattended: stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unguarded.
  • Incidents resulting from reckless behavior
  • Drug or alcohol abuse and any related incidents
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.
  • Changing your mind.

This is a brief overview of common claims we often see but do not provide cover for. Read your policy wording carefully so you have a good understanding of what is and isn’t covered by your travel insurance policy.

Health and safety tips when traveling in Vietnam

Offering astonishing natural beauty and tantalizing tastes, it doesn’t take much for Vietnam to get under your skin. While you’re enjoying its splendor, it helps to keep in mind a few health and safety tips while you’re on the road.

Motorbikes and scooters

Home to millions of motorbikes and scooters, all zipping haphazardly through the streets, navigating the roads in Vietnam is an art form. Road accidents are one of the main causes of injury in Vietnam, so it pays to be vigilant. Pay attention when crossing the street and take particular care if traveling by motorbike or scooter.

If you plan to ride, for your coverage to be available , certain conditions apply:

  • You must be licensed to ride at home and at your destination.
  • You need to comply with local laws and safety practices (obey speed limits, don’t drive drunk).
  • Always wear a helmet.

Consider buying a travel insurance plan that covers motorbike and scooter use. Terms and conditions, limits, and exclusions to coverage will apply so read your policy carefully for full details.

Read our article on covered sports, activities and adventures. In some cases, you may also have to buy an adventure sport upgrade for an additional premium.

World Nomads coverage for travelers injured in motorcycle accidents may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical center
  • Evacuation to more suitable medical facility if it’s urgent, medically necessary and if you’re fit to travel
  • Repatriation if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.

If you need medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation, you or a travel companion MUST contact our Emergency Assistance team immediately.

How to avoid gastro

It’s advisable to avoid drinking tap water while in Vietnam. Water can be contaminated and can result in gastrointestinal upset and other more serious disease such as hepatitis A and typhoid. It’s best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables with the skin on as well as ice cubes in your drinks.

Be aware of petty crime and other criminal activity

While Vietnam is generally a safe place to travel, low level crime does exist.

As with many other destinations petty crime remains an issue in Vietnam. Stay alert, and keep your belongings close.

For more on what you need to know before you go read these tips for how to spot travel scams and rip-offs to avoid being a scammer’s next target.

Tropical diseases

Tropical diseases are common across Asia with Dengue Fever an increasing concern. Always wear light-protective clothing in the evenings and use insect repellant.

Best time to visit Vietnam

Vietnam is a wonderful destination to visit year-round. When choosing what time of year to travel to Vietnam consider what it is you want to see and do while there: do you want to laze by the beach on Phu Quoc Island? Experience the heady culture in untapped Hanoi? Or explore the verdant central highlands to connect with local villages? Whichever you choose there’s a season that’s the perfect fit.

High season, July and August

For beach lovers that means visiting Vietnam in the high season to make use of the warm days and bath-like water. Be sure to book your accommodation well in advance, this is the busiest and most expensive time to visit coastal regions.

Shoulder season, December - March

Shoulder season is perfect for navigating the hustle and bustle of cities where you’ll be jolted to life with the buzz of everyday life in Vietnam’s urban jungles. With cooler temperatures it’s a much more pleasant experience when traveling around people-packed cities like Ho Chi Mihn and Hanoi.

Low season, April to June and September to November

Avoid the crowds and visit in low season for a more timid look at this vibrant country. Trekking to hillside tribes and exploring the central highlands is wonderful during low season - there’s less vying for a spot on a tour and you’re less likely to have to trudge through mud.

What to do if you’re being sued for personal liability

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Every case is different. So we prefer to work with you closely on this if something does go wrong. But here’s two rules that are true for all cases, so make sure you follow them:

NEVER admit you are at fault.

It may feel natural to say you’re sorry when something goes wrong. But don’t. If you do admit fault in any way, we won’t pay your claim.

Get contact details from all involved

You should get contact details of everyone involved in the incident that lead to your claim, including witnesses, police or other officials who attended.

Contact us as soon as possible

As soon as you know that there may be a claim made against you, you must contact our Emergency Assistance team and we’ll then tell you what to do next.

If you delay in contacting us, and we determine that this could have influenced the outcome of your case, we will either not pay your claim or reduce it to reflect that influence.

What to do if you can’t go?

What to do if someone at home is sick or injured

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Rearrange or cancel your bookings

As soon as you know that you won’t be able to use any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport or tours, you must try to rearrange them, or if necessary, cancel.

Just remember, if you decide to rearrange, we’ll only pay up to the amount it would have cost you to cancel those arrangements. If you don’t rearrange or cancel straight away, we won’t cover any additional rearrangement or cancellation costs that arise as a result. But you should only cancel arrangements when it’s absolutely necessary. For example, if your doctor says you can’t fly for two days, but you cancel a three week trip, rather than putting it back by two days, we’ll only cover cancellation of two days’ worth of accommodation, not the entire booking.

Get it in writing

To support your claim, we recommend you get the following:

  • Doctor (or other medical practitioner)’s report, confirming what happened and the nature of the illness or injury.
  • Hospital Admission report (if the person was admitted to hospital)
  • Ambulance report (if they were involved)
  • Police report (if they were involved)
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

Keep your itineraries and receipts

You’ll need to keep your receipts, itineraries and booking and cancellation confirmations including details of any refunds received for any affected transport and accommodation.

Our suggestions should help you avoid unnecessary costs, gather the right evidence and help keep your claim hassle free.

Travel insurance for kayaking

Everything you need to know about travel insurance for kayaking and rafting

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Going Kayaking or Rafting on your Holiday?

Exotic sunsets, the water lapping at your bow, hurtling down river rapids; experiences on the water are often the most unforgettable part of any holiday. From paddling with the family on Lake Superior, to sea kayaking the turquoise waters around Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago, get your next holiday flowing on a kayaking or rafting adventure.

What Kayaking and Rafting do we cover?

When you get a travel insurance quote for your kayaking or rafting trip, you need to specify the adventure activity in your policy. If you don’t, you may not be covered.

When you 'choose your options', select your kayaking/rafting activity according to the following activity category:

  • Kayaking: (inland/coastal waters within 3 nautical miles, grades 1-5)
  • Sea Kayaking: (Beyond 3 nautical miles)
  • Sea Kayaking: (inland/coastal waters within 3 nautical miles, grades 1-5)
  • White Water Kayaking (inland/coastal waters within 2 nautical miles, grades 1-5)

What do those Grades Mean?

Several activity options above mention International River Grades which can be described as:

  • Class 1: Easy
  • Class 2: Novice
  • Class 3: Intermediate
  • Class 4: Advanced
  • Class 5: Expert
  • Class 6: Extreme and Exploratory Rapids (unfortunately we can’t offer cover for this class/grade of kayaking or rafting)

We offer cover for river grades (also known as classes) from Class 1 to Class 5.

Choosing the Right Policy For You

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific activity plans.

Depending on the type of kayaking or rafting activity you’re planning on doing, you may need to pay for an upgrade to be covered.

For example, if you are venturing more than 3 nautical miles from your kayaking/rafting point of departure an additional specified item is required on our policies. This means your travel insurance policy will require an additional premium so that you can be covered. If you are kayaking/rafting more than 3 nautical miles and you haven't specified this on your World Nomads policy, you won’t be covered!

If you’re not sure whether your kayaking or rafting adventure is covered, you can contact us.

What is Covered by World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Our policies may cover you on your kayaking and rafting adventures (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical: Emergency medical coverage could come in handy if you suffer an accident or injury that results in you going to hospital. Find more info here.
  • Evacuation cover: your water adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. If your injuries are worse than first thought, you could be repatriated back to your Country of Residence. Click here to learn more.
  • Trip cancellation or disruption: if your trip is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your travel expenses.
  • Natural catastrophe: If you find yourself amid a natural disaster, or your destination is affected by extreme weather, we can offer coverage if you can’t use your booked accommodation or need to move to a safer location.
  • And more! Check out what else is covered on our policies.

Keep in mind that benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions apply depending on your Country of Residence, so be sure to read your policy wording carefully. If you have any questions about your cover, contact us.

Rafting and kayaking: What’s not covered

While there are several kayaking and rafting adventures, we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any Class 6 kayaking or rafting trips – sorry, but that’s a no-go for us.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to your Country of Residence.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.

Safety Tips and Handy Hints for your Paddling Trip

  • Before you launch, remember to check the International River Grading of the river or water you’re on so you won’t invalidate your cover.
  • Kayaking and rafting are physically demanding – make sure you’re up to it. Plan a trip within your capabilities.
  • Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your instructor/guides.
  • Wear the right gear – it can get cold on the water and being cold and wet can lead to hypothermia.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Essential travel tips for Brazil

The beat of Brazil is unlike anywhere else. Nature-filled experiences abound, and a life-loving energy fills the air. To travel here is to experience the world at its best. From eating your way through the culinary creations of the country to finding your rhythm at Carnival Brazil is a destination for every traveler.

But before you pack your bags and hop on a plane to South America’s largest country, there are a few things to consider when it comes to staying safe in Latin America. Here’s how World Nomads travel insurance can bolster your time in Brazil.

What’s covered

Heading to Brazil without travel insurance is like riding in a car without a seatbelt - it can be risky business. We offer two levels of cover, Standard and Explorer. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you need, our travel insurance may cover you for:

  • Baggage and personal effects
  • Extended stays
  • Overseas medical emergencies and hospital expenses
  • Unexpected trip cancellation
  • Travel delays and trip interruption
  • A wide variety of sports, activities and experiences.

Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.

Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not blanket cover-all and there are some things we do not cover. It’s important to read your policy wording carefully to ensure you fully understand what is and isn’t covered, but some of the common claims we see which we do not cover include:

  • Cancellation costs if you simply change your mind
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Incidents resulting from reckless behavior

If you’ve got any questions, or are unsure if something is covered, please contact us for more information.

Health and safety while in Brazil

While Brazil is considered a relatively safe country to travel in, like anywhere, there are health and safety concerns that have a penchant for ruining your jaunt. Exercise a certain level of caution when traveling here and keep your guard up for the following common complaints:

Crime in cities

Muggings and other opportunistic crimes can be an issue in major cities. Be aware of your surroundings in places like markets, tourist hotspots, ATMs, and on public transport, particularly at night. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo can be hotspots for crime. Pay particular attention in places like Ipanema beach, Christ the Redeemer statue, and Sao Paulo Cathedral.

Keep an eye on your gear 24/7

It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. There’s always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed or being victim of a scam in many top tourist hotspots. When in crowded areas always maintain a sense of awareness of your surroundings. You should also make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

Swimming safety

Brazil’s beaches are brilliant, but many have turbulent seas. Strong rips are a common issue on popular beaches like Ipanema and in Fortaleza. Sharks can be found in the water here too and shark attacks have happened. Practice caution and always heed warning signs posted on beaches.

Mosquito-borne diseases

The Amazon Rainforest is an insect’s paradise and insect-borne diseases are a real threat particularly in the wet season. Zika virus, malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever are all insect-borne diseases that may be contracted in Brazil, not just the Amazon. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms of viruses such as Zika before you go. Cover up and use insect repellent to reduce your risk of being bitten.

Traveling in the Amazon

Covering more than 1 billion acres and spanning 9 countries, the Amazon is the Earth’s most grand rainforest. With approximately 60 percent of the rainforest located in Brazil, there’s much to see and do here. Home to lengthy winding rivers (some of the longest in the world) and an impressive array of species, it’s rich in biodiversity and there are countless ways to experience it all. From jungle tours to cruising the river tributaries, bird spotting to scaling the towering canopy in the name of adrenaline there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time - nor ways things can possibly go sideways. Stay safe and healthy while exploring the jungle with our guide on how to prepare for your first time in the Brazilian Amazon.

Wondering how to stay safe when traveling around the rest of Brazil? Check out our tips for getting around safely here.

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team around the clock

World Nomads travelers have access to 24/7 Emergency Assistance. If something goes wrong and you need help, contact our team. They can help get you find local medical facilities if needed, provide local consular details and information and in the worst-case scenario, help get you home if you’re seriously injured or ill and need to be repatriated. When you call (free from anywhere in the world), make sure you have your policy number and a contact number for where you are so we can help.

FAQ’s

Is Zika virus an issue in Brazil?

Yes, you can contract Zika virus while in Brazil. The virus is transmitted by the Aedes mosquitoes, a type of mosquito found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including Brazil.

What are the recommended vaccinations for Brazil?

There are no mandatory vaccinations for people entering the country; however, we recommend you consult a healthcare professional well in advance of traveling to Brazil. To help maintain your health while in South America, consider certain vaccinations irrespective of Brazil’s entry requirements.

What to do if someone on the policy dies

We're here to help

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

1. Contact Us

Contact the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. They will help you liaise with the local authorities.

We understand that this is a terrible and difficult time, and we can help you through the process of dealing with the situation. We can put you in touch with the necessary authorities and guide you through what you will need to do.

2. Get it in writing

In general, you’ll need copies of the following to submit with your claim. If unsure, please ask:

  • Death certificate, confirming the cause of death.
  • Hospital admission report, if relevant.
  • Ambulance and medical evacuation reports, if relevant.
  • Police report, if they were involved.

In some cases, we may need to obtain past medical history records from the deceased person’s usual doctor. We’ll let you know if this is the case.

3. Keep your receipts

You’ll need to keep all your receipts, along with your itineraries and booking and cancellation confirmations for any affected travel arrangements for when you claim. If you don’t do this, we may reduce or reject your claim.

Our suggestions should help you when things go wrong and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different and cover will vary, depending what's happened, your country of residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your policy will always have the full details.

If you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.

4. Can I claim for a COVID-19 related death?

Yes, it’s possible to submit a claim for any set of circumstances, including a death arising from a Coronavirus (COVID-19) diagnosis. That said, your coverage and whether World Nomads will pay a benefit toward your claim will depend on the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. What is and isn't covered varies depending on your Country of Residence.

You can read more about our COVID cover in our What's Covered for Coronavirus article, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Please note that your claim will be assessed based on the coverage available to you in the policy. The policy can only ever offer coverage for those events that happen after you purchase (and after any applicable waiting period) and while it is active.

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Note: There are specific terms and conditions, limits and exclusions that apply to mountain biking, so be sure to check the exclusions section of this article, and also check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure whether something is covered, contact us.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific mountain biking plans.

When buying a policy you may want to consider upgrading your cover if you want to be covered to go mountain biking up to 6,000m in altitude. You can’t upgrade your policy after the cooling-off period so choose carefully. Check out your policy wording and contact customer service if you’re unsure what your cover includes.

What’s actually covered when you go mountain biking?

  1. If you’re injured or have an accident whilst biking

It’s not nice to think about, but if you suffer an injury or accident on your ride, our emergency medical coverage may cover you for emergencies that require:

  • Hospitalization
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances

If you need medical treatment, it’s essential that you get in touch with our Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible so they can support you.

  1. If you need to be evacuated or repatriated

You might be riding in a remote area, far from medical assistance, so our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility.

  1. Emergency Assistance Team available 24/7

Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can help with a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re traveling, can speak multiple languages, and they’re available 365 days a year.

  1. Cancellation of your ride

If your ride is cancelled or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your unused/additional travel expenses. This includes if your ride is affected by a natural disaster, or your travel destination is affected by an extreme weather event.

  1. Rental Car Excess

If you’ve hired a car to take you to go on your rides and you suffer a car breakdown, traffic accident or your vehicle is broken into, some World Nomads plans may offer damage collision waiver (also called insurance excess) coverage, depending on your Country of Residence and your choice of a Standard or Explorer plan.

Note: keep in mind that all plans are different depending on the plan chosen and your Country of Residence. Terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. If you’re not sure about anything, contact us.

What’s not covered when mountain biking?

While we can offer coverage for mountain biking, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • No matter how safe you are, we won’t cover any mountain biking on the infamous Death Road – otherwise known as Yungas Road in Bolivia.
  • We only cover mountain biking that is incidental to your holiday – that means you only plan to cycle or go mountain biking for a day or two here and there and you’re not using a bike as your main mode of transport while on your travels.
  • Riding at altitudes over 6,000 metres
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads, or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.

World Nomad’s handy tips for your mountain bike adventures

  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride – check the saddle, pedals , handlebars and tyre pressure.
  • Put your safety first: only go riding with professional, qualified, licensed and reputable operators. If you don’t, your cover may be void. If something doesn’t feel right, then don’t go.
  • Keep your body loose and springy and be prepared to stand up on the bike – doing this moves you with the bike and can help you avoid injury and accidents.
