Am I covered if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 8 November 2022, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 8 November 2022, please see below.

We understand that when travelling, you or any of your travelling companions might suffer from a pre-existing medical condition which needs plenty of TLC.

Whilst we cannot cover any costs related to a pre-existing medical condition for you (with the exception of the 'complications of pregnancy', as defined in the policy terms and conditions), a relative or anyone travelling with you which exists before you buy this policy or when you decide to extend the policy, we still want to be able to help you out with World Nomads Travel Insurance for many other issues that may arise.

We can offer you the option to buy our Standard Plan or Explorer Plan online before you take off on your holiday, but please be aware that there's no cover for any costs arising from, or made worse by, any pre-existing medical condition (with the exception of the 'complications of pregnancy', as defined in the policy). Please read the policy terms and conditions for more information.

What is a ‘pre-existing medical condition’?

  • If any of the below conditions exist for you, a member of your travelling party, a close relative or any other person upon whom your trip depends, and you or they were aware of the condition(s), then we'll consider that you (or they) have a pre-existing medical condition: has a medical or dental condition, or related complication, for which advice,
treatment or medication has been prescribed by a medical practitioner, dentist
or a chiropractor within the 180 days; or
  • has an ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication; or
  • has an ongoing medical or dental condition, or related complication which
is currently being or has been investigated by a medical practitioner, dentist
    or a chiropractor.

Are you travelling while pregnant? We can offer travel insurance to cover your 'complications of pregnancy', as defined in the policy wording. Read this article – Am I covered if I’m pregnant for more information on pregnancy cover.

What’s not covered?

  • Any medical condition you suffer from or are treated for while travelling will be considered a pre-existing medical condition on any extension of this insurance.
  • Any pre-existing conditions of the teeth and dental treatment which is not pain relieving and can await your arrival home.
  • If you return home at any point during your trip, the medical condition that caused you to return home will be considered a pre-existing medical condition from the time you resume your trip.
  • Regarding medical and dental expenses, we don’t cover expenses for control, treatment and medicines in connection with stabilisation and regulation of a pre-existing medical condition.

Any medical claim that we settle for you will have the policy excess deducted, per person, per claimable event.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of whether or not you have the right cover, please contact us for help.
