Travel Insurance: am I covered for skiing/snowboarding?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Yes, your policy offers cover for you while skiing or snowboarding abroad. You must choose the correct level of activity cover when purchasing your policy and pay any applicable additional premium depending on what you are planning to do.

What's covered

Simply add the skiing or snowboarding activity that best matches what you plan to do while on your travels when getting your quote. It’s that simple! Special conditions and exclusions apply to certain winter sport activities, so be aware of this and select your sport carefully.

Conventional skiing and snowboarding only: It's not a condition of cover that you ski or board with a guide, however, you must follow the International Ski Federation code or the resort regulations, and we recommend that you do not venture into back country areas without taking local advice and appropriate rescue equipment.

You must add all the adventures and activities you plan to try on your trip when you buy it. You won’t be able to make changes after your policy is issued.

How it works

If you’re unfortunate enough to have an accident and hurt yourself while skiing/boarding, we can cover:

  • Medical evacuation if it’s urgent and necessary (by the most appropriate means including helicopter when necessary and available). Pre-approval from the insurer required.

  • Emergency medical expenses overseas for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical centre.

  • Repatriation (curtailment) home if you’re seriously ill or injured and unable to continue your trip.

If something happens to you and it’s medically necessary that you be evacuated, you or someone with you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team immediately and remain in contact until you no longer require treatment or assistance.

Who pays for medical treatment depends on what’s happened to you and the necessary treatment required.

What’s not covered?

Here are some of the main things that aren't covered (for both skiing and snowboarding):

  • Any competition, free-style skiing/snowboarding, ski/snowboard jumping, ski-flying, ski/snowboarding acrobatics, ski/snowboarding stunting, ski racing ice hockey or the use of skeletons.

  • Skiing or snowboarding at a professional level i.e. you are being paid or sponsored.

  • Competing at international events as a national representative or national squad training.

  • Search and rescue.

  • Any on-going medical expenses once you return to your Country of Residence.

  • Anything mentioned in the List of Activities Not Covered under Section 11 or any other exclusions in the policy.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of cover please contact us for help.
