What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my horseback riding trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for US residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even if your main goal is to go horseback riding on the beach, you’ll probably be doing other fun things like hiking or swimming. That’s totally fine, because you could be covered for more than 250 other sports, activities and experiences.

  • The Standard and Annual plans covers basic equestrian activities such as horseback riding tours and camping with your horse up to 19,685 feet/6,000 meters
  • The Explorer plan covers more activities, including horseback riding in a rodeo. It also has higher limits of coverage and covers camping up to 21,325 feet/6,500 meters
  • The Epic plan covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including camping up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters. It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.

What may not be covered when horseback riding?

  • Horseback riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Top safety tips we recommend for your horseback riding trip

  • Have the right gear: Wearing a helmet is a MUST, no matter how experienced you are.
  • Wear proper clothing: Long pants and closed-toed footwear are essential.
  • Be prepared: Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your riding instructor or tour guide.
  • Keep an eye on your gear: Don’t leave your expensive horse-riding gear or any other baggage unattended – those 'I spaced out” moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Saddle up properly: Make sure your saddle is fitted properly. If the saddle is the wrong size, you could be more likely to slip out of it and fall.
  • Know your own physical abilities: Horseback riding requires a certain amount of strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance to mount and ride the horse. Make sure you are physically capable of riding.
  • Don’t startle the horse: Injuries can happen when horses are spooked by things like sudden movements and loud noises.
