Am I covered by travel insurance if I need to see a dentist?

Yes, there’s cover if you need to go to a dentist for emergency dental treatment to relieve sudden and acute pain to your healthy teeth while you’re travelling.

What’s covered

Your policy covers dental expenses incurred for the immediate relief of sudden and acute pain to healthy, natural teeth* following:

  • an infection, or
  • a broken tooth due to an accident

*‘Healthy, natural teeth’ means they must be whole or properly restored (with fillings only) and without any other conditions or impairment.

How much you can claim?

Well, that depends on how many travellers are listed on your policy.

Plan1 Traveller2 + Travellers
Standard $500 $1000      (in total, not per person)
Explorer $500 $1000      (in total, not per person)

What you need to do if something happens

  • call our Emergency Assistance Team for advice on your dental condition or if you need directions to the nearest or most suitable dentist.
  • go to any registered and licensed dentist for the emergency dental treatment you need and pay the dental bills yourself.
  • make a claim online through your membership once your treatment is complete (for overseas emergency dental expenses only).

The $100 policy excess applies to all dental claims, per event.

What’s not covered

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions in the policy wording for what is and isn’t covered.

Here are the main things that aren’t covered:

  • dental treatment which can wait until your return home;
  • major dental work, such as crowns, dentures, bridges and implants;
  • any dental expenses while at home;
  • anything related to a pre-existing medical condition, which includes ongoing or chronic dental conditions or related conditions of which you are aware, have received treatment in the 90 days prior to buying your policy (or in any previous insurance period for extended policies), which you have had surgery for or seen a medical specialist ;
  • anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the policy wording.
