Rising River in 'Nam
We were traveling in Vietnam and visited Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park where we stayed at the Phong Nha Farmstay for several days. On November 23rd, we hiked into the National Park with several other tourists. We visited Hang En Cave, sleeping in a campsite in the mouth of the cave. At 3 am we all heard a roar as the river passing our campsite began to rise rapidly. Our exit through the rear of the cave had been cut off by the dramatic speed of the river's rise. In the next 2 minutes, we all searched frantically for an alternative exit in the dark cave, ultimately wading through rushing, chest deep water in the dark across to the other side of the river and mouth of the cave. There were trees being swept through the river over where our campsite had been located within 30 seconds of us all being safely across. We lost almost all of our possessions including food and water in the flash flood given the rapid and chaotic emergency exit from our campsite and cave. We were stuck on the walls of the cliff outside the cave without food or water for the next 36 hours while waiting for the river level to fall. We all felt incredibly lucky to have survived this ordeal (believing during the first two minutes of the flash flood that likely all was lost). My wife and I lost a pack with photography and camping/hiking equipment, as well as clothes that were drying near our campsite that were all swept away.
