It's never been easier to unplug and take off, now that you can work and study remotely – assuming there's good Wi-Fi.

But travel glitches can arrive in all shapes and sizes, even with the most meticulous planning. Although it's great to hope for the best, it may be wiser to plan your moves with travel insurance*.

What is a flexcation?

Because of flexible work and school schedules, more travelers are opting to take 'flexcations', extended stays away from home that are mixture of leisure and work (digital nomads), or going to school remotely, either domestically or abroad.

Do I need travel insurance for flexcations?

If you’re planting yourself in a different place while working and playing, there are a few questions to ask yourself when you’re shopping around for a travel insurance plan. How long am I staying? What kind of medical coverage do I need? Am I taking along personal belongings that I can’t stand to lose? Is my entire family covered? How much am I spending on pre-paid deposits?

There's a lot to consider when buying travel insurance and specifically for the needs of flexcations. Here are a number of ways that travel insurance can help on a trip that combines business and pleasure.

What's covered for flexcations?

Whether you're seeking a quiet haven or an outdoor adventure, World Nomads has ways to support you:

When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side-by-side and determine which one might be right for you.

What's not covered for flexcations?

Travel insurance isn't designed to cover everything. These are some things that don't fall under the scope of your plan:

  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition, unless you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period were medically able to travel at the time of purchase.
  • Any electronics or other equipment that you use for professional purposes.
  • A sudden loss of your job that has left you unemployed and unable to work remotely after all.
  • Any items lost, stolen or damaged that were unsupervised or unattended.
  • Certain items such as cash, credit cards and sports equipment damaged while in use.
  • Any costs related to illegal activities or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • A non-emergency treatment or surgery, such as routine physical examinations (it's not regular health insurance; it’s for medical emergencies).
  • Pregnancy and childbirth (except for complications of pregnancy).

Staying for an extended period of time or moving to a country as an expat? Consider whether you need a travel health insurance as opposed to a travel insurance plan. To read more about the differences, go to our page on travel health insurance
