Get the medical treatment you need after being attacked

  • Trusted by:

This information is for US travelers. Physical and sexual assault aren't something you want to think about for your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks happen way too often to travelers. That's why we're here to help you. While some destinations have higher incidents than others, no destination is immune.

To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of some countries can see innocent victims imprisoned, so knowing what to do following an attack can be difficult.

If you're unsure what to do, call our emergency team and they'll be able to guide you. Our Emergency assistance team has extensive experience understanding and liasing with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.

Does travel insurance cover assault?

If you’ve been assaulted overseas, both our Standard and Explore travel insurance policies for US residents have the following benefits which can help patch you up and get you on the road to recovery:

  • Hospitalization
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary

Depending on the policy you buy and your country of residence, there are limitations that will apply. So it’s a good idea to do some research on where you’re going, so you can pick a policy that’s best for you.

Does travel insurance cover counseling following assault?

Unfortunately, our plans for US residents do not cover counseling.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed for when things unexpectedly happen to you. If you pick a fight and end up coming out worse for wear, we're going to take that into account and may decide you won't be covered because you've put yourself at risk.

What do I do if I’m assaulted overseas?

It’s essential that you get in contact with our emergency assistance teams as soon as possible so that they can assess the situation according to location and local laws, and then triage accordingly.

So that our Emergency Assistance teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Assaulted in Paris.

On the first night of my trip to Paris, I was waiting at a bus stop to get to the place where I was staying when I was pulled into a car and sexually assaulted. After a struggle, I was able to get out of the car and run to the nearest area with foot-traffic. I immediately went to the nearest hospital emergency room at Hopital Hotel-Dieu where emergency blood tests were done to determine possible transmission of sexually transmitted disease, as well as given Hepatitis B shot, a NorLevo pill to prevent pregnancy, and an emergency prescription of antiretroviral medication for the exposure to HIV/AIDS.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas medical insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team. If you’re looking for general travel advice, you can ask our community at Ask a Nomad.

  • Do I call the police if I've been assaulted?
Local laws may require you to contact the local authorities before calling other assistance. However, you should contact our emergency team as well, so they can assess the situation and help guide you.
  • What happens if I'm injured and need life support?
That’s a really bad way to end your holiday, and we hope you never end on life support. But if you do, we will look at the best possible solution to either get you home, or get your family over there to say goodbye.
  • Can my mom come and get me?
If you need a medical escort, we will send you home with a nurse or doctor. Family members aren't usually allowed to be medical escorts, but it depends on your situation.
