What level of travel insurance coverage for my horseback riding trip do I need?

World Nomads offers two plans for Canadian residents – the Standard and Explorer – each with different levels of coverage. Both plans cover:

  • Leisurely horseback riding; and
  • Equestrian, dressage, show jumping, and eventing, but you will need to pay an extra premium for these activities

When you purchase your policy, you’ll need to list horseback riding, and all of the other activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip. There are over 250 other sports, activities and experiences that could be covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. Costs may vary depending on the activities you plan to do on your horse.

  • Level 1 activity: Leisurely horseback riding.
  • Level 3 activities: Equestrian, dressage, show jumping, and eventing.

If you are planning to participate in an activity that isn’t listed in our policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine if you will be covered.

What may not be covered when horseback riding?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • Horseback riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items
  • Horseback riding or travelling within your home province
  • Injuries to your horse
  • Riding horses in a rodeo, competition, or for salary/compensation
  • Riding bare back or playing polo

Top safety tips we recommend for your horseback riding trip

  • Have the right gear: Wearing a helmet is a MUST, no matter how experienced you are.
  • Wear proper clothing: Long pants and closed-toed footwear are essential.
  • Be prepared: Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your riding instructor or tour operator.
  • Keep an eye on your gear: Don’t leave your expensive horse-riding gear or any other baggage unattended – those 'I spaced out” moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Saddle up properly: Make sure your saddle is fitted properly. If the saddle is the wrong size, you could be more likely to slip out of it and fall.
  • Know your own physical abilities: Horseback riding requires a certain amount of strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance to mount and ride the horse. Make sure you are physically capable of riding.
  • Don’t startle the horse: Injuries can happen when horses are spooked by things like sudden movements and loud noises.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for Horseback riding. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Is horseback riding covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, basic horseback riding tours are covered under both plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance, but make sure you list this as an activity you’ll be participating in when you purchase your policy. Leisurely horseback riding is considered a Level 1 activity and is automatically covered, but you’ll still need to list this as an activity when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for any Level 2 activities and Level 3 activities such as equestrian, dressage, show jumping, and eventing. If you are doing something beyond a basic equestrian activity, we suggest you contact us to find out what is covered.

  • What types of incidents are covered while horseback riding abroad?

If your trip is cancelled, delayed, or interrupted due to an unforeseen event, you may be able to recover your nonrefundable, prepaid travel expenses (up to the policy limits), and this could include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable horseback riding tours that you paid for in advance. If you fall off of your horse or you’re at the wrong end of a feisty hoof and you require medical assistance, emergency medical coverage could come in handy in the case of an unexpected injury. You could also be covered for unplanned situations such as lost bags or Canadian government advisories advising travellers not to travel to a destination on your itinerary.
