Can I extend my policy if I’m already travelling?

Yes, you can. With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance from almost anywhere in the world and manage your policy online.

  • If your policy has expired, not to worry. You can still extend your coverage but a 48-hour waiting period applies. That means no coverage is provided for the first 48 hours unless it’s an emergency medical issue resulting from an accident.
  • Because of the waiting period, we recommend you contact us at least 72 hours before your policy’s expiry date to ensure that your coverage is not interrupted.

Our "purchase while on the road" option is perfect for when:

  • You leave home and forgot to purchase a travel insurance plan.
  • Your policy has expired because you’ve been having too much fun and didn’t realize that your coverage has ended.
  • You are outside your home country working or going to school and decide to take a trip and need travel insurance.

What you need to know

If you buy a policy while travelling, conditions and restrictions may apply:

  • You will have to wait up to 48 hours to be eligible for full coverage.
  • You may not qualify for certain benefits such as pre-trip cancellation (as you’ve already left your country of residence).
  • The 10-day "right to examine" period does not apply.
  • Policy extensions are non-refundable.

For more information on how to purchase or extend your policy, read our Help Centre article.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.

Malaria at Christmas

On Christmas Day, I woke up feeling nausea, fever, headache, and lethargy. After two days the symptoms hadn’t disappeared so I went to a clinic and was admitted with severe malaria. I was in the hospital for two days and had to take medication.
