Whether you’re headed to Umbria or Emilia-Romagna, these travel insurance tips can help you live ‘la dolce vita'

There are more hidden gems in Italy than there are varieties of pasta. Instead of visiting Rome’s Coliseum or Florence’s Il Duomo, you could sample an after-dinner limoncello while watching an Amalfi sunset or swim the turquoise waters of Lake Garda.
When you head to the Bel Paese, you’ll no doubt have an unforgettable trip; World Nomads wants to help make sure it’s unforgettable for the right reasons. Here are our tips for living large in Italia that help you protect yourself... so you can save your worries for which flavor of gelato to order instead.
Italy might be the home of high fashion brands, but even a humble fanny pack can draw attention here – thanks to pickpockets. Always be vigilant with your personal items, especially in crowded areas where you’re likely to get jostled, such as transport hubs and busy tourist sights. If the worst happens, and you become a victim of theft, you may be eligible for coverage for the loss of your baggage and personal effects (One thing to note is that our plans cover the depreciated value of the item. So, you will be covered at the reduced value of your belongings, not the current retail price).
For example, you may have paid a certain amount for your new backpack five years ago, but in its current well-worn state, only a percentage of the original purchase price would be reimbursed under the policy. Get a report as soon as possible from the local police and keep a copy if you want to make a claim.
Some items, such as cash and credit cards are not recoverable, so carry only the euros you’ll need for the day. And note the maximum benefit for baggage... you may want to leave your designer bag at home.
If you’re planning on shushing down the snow-dusted slopes of the Dolomites or cycling through cinematic Tuscany, consider how much coverage you’ll need for your adventure. Depending on your adventure sports and activities, you may need to pay for an upgrade for an additional premium. Al fresco fun can be nothing less than magical, but only when you’re prepared for all the wild surprises that can show up impromptu outdoors, including wonky weather issues.
In a medical emergency, say an ACL tear or equipment failure that leaves you on your derrière, in pain, it’s comforting to know you can contact World Nomads for 24/7 Emergency Assistance. It can help you find care nearby, communicate with doctors, and even assist with any frazzling paperwork that you’ll need for out-of-pocket expenses. (While Italian citizens have nationalized healthcare, visitors from non-EU countries may have to pay for the cost of their treatments.) With a World Nomads policy, you could be covered for reimbursement of medical expenses for emergency accidents and sicknesses, up the maximum plan benefit.
One of the most common reasons World Nomads gets a worried call from travellers in Italy is a trip interruption. Maybe local train employees are on strike or your connecting flight was cancelled because of bad weather. With a World Nomads policy, you may be eligible for a subsistence allowance for expenses you incurred because of the interruption, such as food and hotels. Just be sure to keep your receipts and copies of your rescheduled itinerary.
Whatever you’re planning, be sure to read over your policy carefully and contact customer service if you have questions.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.
