Why it pays to consider travel insurance

We get it, the last thing you want to think about when planning your holiday is what could possibly go wrong. However, travel insurance could pay off in more ways than one, if you end up in hospital or are caught in unexpected events when visiting a far-away land.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance and Claims Teams have heard many stories (some that we couldn’t make up even if we tried). We've dealt with broken bones, monkey bites, helicopter evacuations, tropical diseases, and more travel insurance claims for gastro than we could possibly count. If you’re unconvinced, then check out some of the crazy but true experiences our nomads have gone through in their travels.

A broken leg in Thailand

I fell on my side and heard the sound of dry stick breaking, I realized my leg was broken, then I just lay on the beach... The first phone call I got was from World Nomads and they basically told me, you don't worry about this Anton, just focus on getting better...and we'll take care of the rest.

Anton,
World Nomads customer from Iceland

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

Travel Insurance for Pregnancy

Learn what is and isn't covered by travel insurance if you're pregnant.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Congrats, mama-to-be! 🎉 Time to enjoy some fun before your little nomad arrives. Book that babymoon—you’ve earned it! And don’t forget to get travel insurance to cover any surprises along the way.

Can I still get travel insurance if I’m travelling while pregnant?

Yes – we don’t expect you to sit home for nine months, and we completely understand that you may be travelling. Unexpected travel situations can still happen when you’re expecting a little one, so it could be a good idea to consider travel insurance when you’re travelling while pregnant.

Just read your policy and make sure you understand what it does and doesn’t cover. Starting at nine weeks before your due date, travel insurance won’t cover any pregnancy-related medical issues. It also isn’t going to cover the costs of childbirth if the baby comes while you’re travelling. By your third trimester, your doctor may recommend that you stay close to home anyway.

How to get emergency assistance

It’s essential that you get in contact with our Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible so that you can get support.

Please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number where you can be reached
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Nomads tip: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your travels within Canada! Your Government Health Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province too.

What is covered by travel insurance?

When travelling while pregnant, there are several benefits included in your travel insurance plan that could be especially important to you.

  • Emergency Medical Expense Coverage: Morning sickness is one thing, but if a serious medical emergency happens while travelling pregnant, you’ll want travel insurance! It can help cover doctor visits, hospital stays, medications, and ambulance rides. Our travel insurance plans for Canadian travellers provide emergency medical coverage including coverage for an emergency medical condition due to complications of pregnancy within the first 31 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption: Pregnant and facing a medical emergency before or during your trip? Trip cancellation or trip interruption coverage could save you a lot of money! If you, your travel companion, or an immediate family member develops a medical condition before leaving Canada or your trip is interrupted due to an emergency medical situation, including a complication of pregnancy within the first 31 weeks of pregnancy, you may be eligible for reimbursed of your prepaid non-refundable flights, hotels, and more. This protection is especially important when travelling while pregnant, as your health could change rapidly.
  • Lost or delayed baggage: If your checked bag is lost by your common carrier, you could be reimbursed for your belongings (up to maximum limits stated in your policy wording.) If your checked bag is delayed for more than 12 hours, you could also get reimbursed for the costs of toiletries and a change of clothes.

Best Travel Insurance Plans for Pregnant Travellers

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans for Canadian residents, both covering pregnancy-related medical issues up to 31 weeks:

  • Standard Plan:
    • Emergency medical coverage up to CAD $5,000,000
    • Lower premiums, basic coverage
  • Explorer Plan:
    • Emergency medical coverage up to CAD $10,000,000
    • Higher limits and more comprehensive coverage

Important: You must maintain coverage through your home province’s Government Health Insurance Plan. Without it, emergency medical coverage limits max out at CAD $40,000.

When requesting a pregnancy travel insurance quote, you can compare both plans side-by-side to choose the best fit. Unsure about coverage? Our customer service team is here to clarify any questions.

Am I covered for activities while I’m pregnant and travelling?

World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents. Let’s be real though – just because World Nomads covers so many activities, doesn’t mean you should be participating in all of them when you’re travelling while pregnant. Every person is different, and your doctor can give you the right advice for your particular situation. Once you know what activities are safe and you make a plan, you can then get a quote for travel insurance. At that time, you’ll need to list all of your planned activities. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.

We cover 250 activities you love + more

Snow 20 activities
Water 43 activities
Air 13 activities
Land 61 activities
Sports 75 activities
Experiences 12 activities
  • Scuba diving
  • Mountain biking
  • Surfing
  • Bungee jumping
  • Skiing
Activities shown in blue are automatically included in the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. Activities shown in orange require an optional upgrade for coverage to apply. Special conditions and exclusions may apply to certain activities, check the Travel Insurance Policy for full details.

Can You Fly While Pregnant?

In most cases, yes - flying while pregnant is safe for healthy women, especially during the second trimester, which is often considered the safest time to travel. But every pregnancy is different, so always check with your doctor first. If they advise against flying, don’t risk it—travel insurance won’t cover you if you ignore medical advice.

Before booking, review your airline’s pregnancy travel policy. If you're near your due date, you may need a note from your doctor confirming your due date and any potential complications. No letter? You might be denied boarding—and that’s not something your travel insurance will cover.

Plan ahead, get your paperwork in order, and fly safe!

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance could cover several unplanned situations if you’re travelling while pregnant, but it isn’t meant to cover everything. If your doctors tell you not to travel while you’re pregnant, and you do it anyway, you won’t be covered by travel insurance.

A few other things that wouldn’t be covered include:

  • Routine prenatal care
  • Giving birth during your trip
  • Any pregnancy-related medical issues starting at nine weeks before your due date
  • Any pre-existing medical condition(s) as explained in the policy wording
  • Medical expenses incurred while travelling within your home province

Top Tips for Travelling While Pregnant

Got the diapers and onesies? Cool. Now here’s your travel checklist. Just because you’re expecting doesn’t mean you have to cancel all your adventures—unless your doctor says so, of course.

  • Check in with your doctor: Before booking, talk to your healthcare provider about whether travel (especially flying while pregnant) is safe for you.
  • Know your destination: Check the Canadian government’s travel advisories for any health risks.
  • Airline rules: Some airlines require a doctor’s note if you’re flying while pregnant—check before you go.
  • Don’t skip the stockings: Compression socks aren’t cute, but they help reduce the risk of blood clots on long flights.
  • Hydrate like a pro: Drink water often—preferably bottled if you’re unsure of the local water quality.
  • Pack meds in your carry-on: Don’t risk losing important prescriptions in checked luggage. Include nausea relief, just in case.
  • Buckle up smart: Keep your seatbelt low and under your belly for comfort and safety.
  • Go for the aisle seat: Trust us—you’ll want easier access to the restroom.
  • Watch your meals: Avoid carbonated drinks, gassy foods, and all-you-can-eat regret.
  • Save your travel insurance info: Keep your policy number and 24/7 emergency assistance line handy on your phone.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.
