  • Plans include coverage for more than 250 activities, giving families flexibility to explore together.
  • Standard, Explorer, and Epic plans offer different benefit levels, and children are covered up to the same per-person limits as adults.

Taking the kids along this time? We love seeing young travellers discover the world. With World Nomads, you may be able to cover up to seven of your dependent children—if you’re adventurous enough to bring them all!

Why should I get family travel insurance?

Travelling with kids is full of adventure—and a few inevitable squabbles along the way. But when children are part of the journey, even minor travel disruptions can feel significant. Family travel insurance may help you manage those unexpected moments and keep your trip on track.

Travel insurance for families may help cover medical emergencies, trip interruptions, or other unexpected events that can disrupt your journey.

What happens if you or your travel companion becomes ill or injured while on a trip with the kids? World Nomads family travel insurance plans may cover the transport of your minor children back home, accompanied by an attendant if necessary.

With travel insurance for kids and parents, you can focus on making memories, knowing your family may be protected if things don’t go as planned.

Who is covered under a family travel insurance policy?

When you buy a family travel insurance plan, coverage may extend to:

  • Parents or legal guardians travelling with their dependent children (less than 21 years of age or up to 25 years of age if they are full-time students).
  • Families who live in the same province and are Canadian Residents
  • Your dependent natural, adopted, step or foster children.
  • Trips where at least one adult is the legal guardian of the dependent children.
  • Up to seven dependent children included on a single-family travel insurance plan—for the same price

If your kids don’t meet the above requirements, you can purchase single plans for each one. When you get a quote, be sure to list all dependents who will be travelling with you on the plan to ensure coverage for your whole family.

How can World Nomads Travel Insurance cover me and my family?

World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance plans, designed for travellers by travellers, to help you travel confidently on your next family vacation. Our two plans offer differing levels of coverage, so it’s important you compare plans and pick the best one for your trip. Subject to terms and conditions, our plans offer coverage for:

What may not be covered?

  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.
  • Pre-existing conditions exclusions apply to medical conditions and/or symptoms that existed prior to your policy start date.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the covered activities list

Important to Know

You will still need to have Government Health Insurance Plan coverage in your home province while you are on your trip. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is CAD $40,000 per person.

Are dependents covered up to the same policy limits?

Yep! Your kids are covered up to the same limits even though they are travelling as dependents. The benefit limits shown on the family plan are the maximum amount payable per person.

Nomads Tip call-out box: World Nomads Travel Insurance can also cover your family travels within Canada! Your Government Health Insurance Plan is limited once you leave your province. Your travel insurance plan can protect your domestic travels outside of your home province too.

Top safety tips we recommend for your family trip

  • Have a “Who to Contact First” Plan: Write down your hotel number, your emergency contact back home, local emergency number, and your travel insurance emergency line and policy number. Keep it on paper and in your mobile in case batteries run low.
  • Set a Family Meeting Point: For each place you visit (such as an airport, museum, beach, etc.) choose a specific spot if someone becomes separated. Make it precise, like “Under the main departures board,” not “near security.”
  • Share Live Location: Use Find My iPhone, WhatsApp, Google Location Sharing, etc to keep track of everyone family member in real time. Turn on battery-saver mode during long days out. If your child is too young for a cellphone, consider putting an AirTag on their shoe or backpack.
  • Split Important Cards and Cash: Don’t keep all bank cards, cash, and passports in the same bag. Each adult (or responsible teen) carries one payment card and a copy of ID.
  • Create Digital Backups of Documents Like: your passports, visas, travel insurance details, prescriptions, etc. Save them in a password-protected cloud folder and on a small USB.
  • Check with the Public Health Agency of Canada to see if they have issued any travel health notices for your family trip destination.
  • Register with Canadians Abroad to stay updated on emergency situations.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for family travel insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I buy a family travel insurance plan if we're already on our trip?
Yes, you may be able to buy family travel insurance after your trip has started. If you’re already travelling and realize you need coverage, you can still purchase travel insurance while abroad, as long as you meet the plan’s eligibility requirements and your trip is outside your home province. You can choose the length of coverage that fits your itinerary—up to 365 days per trip (if your trip is more than 183 days (212 for Ontario and Newfoundland) you must have written evidence of extension of your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) to qualify for coverage under the plan). Always review your plan wording carefully to understand when your coverage begins and ends.

  • Built for adventurous travelers, with coverage for 250+ activities from hiking and diving to skiing.

Planning an extended trip with no set return date? World Nomads offers flexible long-term travel insurance coverage designed for adventurous U.S. residents exploring the world. Whether you’re traveling for several weeks or up to 180 days on a single trip, our plans may help protect you along the way — even if your journey includes adventure activities like hiking, diving, or skiing. Prefer to take multiple shorter getaways? Our Annual Plan may cover several trips per year, with each lasting up to 45 days.

What ‘Long-Term Travel Protection’ Really Means for Your Trip

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options that may ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Purchase a new plan: If your plan has expired, you may be able to purchase a new one while you’re still traveling. Just note your coverage takes effect at 12:01 a.m. local time the day after you purchase your plan and will not cover any events that happened prior to the new plan’s start date. Your plan document will have full details to understand what’s covered, limits and exclusions.
  • Consider the optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit: It’s unfortunate, but it happens: You plan a big trip months in advance, only to have something come up that is now stopping you from going. The trip cancellation benefit may help recover your travel expenses (up to the maximum benefit amount), and may include unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements you paid for in advance, but a certain qualifying event would have to happen (sickness, natural disaster, etc.) But what if your dog is sick or you break up with your partner or you get a new job? Instead of losing all the money you put down, consider adding on the “cancel for any reason” benefit to your Explorer or Epic travel protection plan during the time-sensitive period to protect those long trips (and big investments!). Not available in NY, additional cost and terms apply.
20251106-4950803. This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of maximums, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your state specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.

Flexible Travel Insurance for Expats

Learn why expats choose World Nomads for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to October 23 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For plans purchased after October 23 2024, please see below.

With flexible travel insurance that covers more than 250 activities, it’s no wonder expats keep turning to World Nomads for travel insurance for their overseas getaways and holiday breaks.

If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your plan has run out while you’re still on the road, don’t panic. World Nomads has got you covered with simple and flexible travel insurance* plans that you can buy online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.

Travel insurance for expats

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

There are three main reasons expats keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:

1. Flexible travel insurance

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long (up to 180 days for a single trip plan or 45 days for an Annual Plan), or as little, as you need. Note that you do need to come back to your home in the US in order to close out your trip; you cannot keep buying travel insurance plans without returning to the US after the maximum length is up.

2. Accessible online travel insurance even after you’ve left home

All you need is a good internet connection to purchase a plan, no matter if you are home or on the road, to get a travel insurance quote. Answer a few simple questions about your trip and follow the prompts that will outline the coverage and benefits we offer. We offer two types of plans – Single Trip or Annual Travel Insurance. Within our single trip plans, we also have three levels of coverage– you can compare them when you get a quote and select the one that best suits your needs. Then read and accept the terms and conditions, pay for your insurance, and you’re done.

3. All the essentials you need covered, and more...

We designed our travel insurance plans around what our travelers most often claim for and tell us they want.

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance in multiple languages for a range of services. If you need help (medical, lost bags, crimes, natural disasters, etc.), they should be your first call.
  • Emergency medical expense coverage that may include hospitalization, same day surgery and out-patient treatment, emergency dental coverage, and visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Coverage for delayed, lost or stolen baggage, gear and sporting equipment.
  • Coverage for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses when you’ve had to unexpectedly cancel your trip for a covered reason
  • Mechanical breakdowns or transportation strikes that shut down travel on common carriers for 24 consecutive hours.
  • Coverage for more than 250 adventure activities, sports and experiences, including rock climbing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, hiking and snorkeling.
  • Coverage when your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled due to a covered reason.
  • Pre-trip medical support via our non-insurance service partners at Runway Health & FootprintID. If you need vaccines or medicines for your vacation destination, we’ve got your back.

Some of our higher tier plans (Explorer and Epic) also offer coverage for:

  • Rental Car Protection (applicable to state regulations; read your plan to make sure your state is covered).
  • Travel inconveniences, like a ski resort that shuts down due to lack of snow or your cruise misses a port of call due to inclement weather. Note that you must have purchased your plan during the time-sensitive period in order to qualify for this benefit.
  • Pet Kenneling for your furry friend if your travel delay causes them to stay at least six hours longer at their kennel than expected.
  • Trip Exchange if your travel supplier (like a tour company or cruise) changes the dates on you and you are forced to incur extra expenses, or even cancel, as a result.
  • Missed connection coverage for when you arrive too late to make your trip departure (like on a cruise or tour group) and you incur extra expenses to join at a different location (or port).

You can also add “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage to the Explorer and Epic plans, although an additional cost will be incurred. You must add this benefit to your plan during the time-sensitive period of 7 days after you make your first payment or deposit towards your trip. You may want to consider this if you are planning a big trip and have invested a lot of money, or if you are worried something could come up in the future that could cause you to miss it.

*All information we provided here is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions, and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your state specific plan documents for a full description of coverage. Travel insurance is included as part of your travel protection plan which contains both insurance benefits and non-insurance assistance services. Broken glass shards

At 12:00 in the afternoon after a yoga class, I took a large jar of coconut water from the fridge, and accidentally dropped it on the counter and slipped onto the broken glass shards. I slipped while holding a jar. I hit my left wrist on the broken glass shards and had cut wound as a result. I looked at it quickly, saw open flesh flapping, wrapped it in a clean towel and called a taxi to go to the hospital as soon as possible. I had pain and numbness in my right wrist. No neck injury, no head injury, no other injuries apparent.

Travel Insurance Coverage for Pregnancy Complications

Expecting a new baby? Learn why you may want to consider travel insurance that may cover pregnancy complications

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

At a glance

  • World Nomads offers plans that may cover losses resulting from complications of pregnancy
  • If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a pregnancy complication, you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, non-refundable, unused, forfeited travel arrangements that you made in advance such as hotel accommodations, flights and tours. Terms and conditions apply to all mentioned above

Why should you consider travel insurance that may cover losses resulting from pregnancy complications?

Did you book your dream vacation and then find out that you’re pregnant a week later? Or do you just need a little babymoon to have some relaxing time before your little one arrives? Either way, many women travel with confidence while pregnant, and you can too. We recommend you consult your doctor first just to make sure it’s safe for you to travel and then start thinking about the ‘what ifs’. As unexpected medical events can disrupt travel plans anytime, you may want to consider getting a quote for travel protection which includes insurance benefits and non-insurance services that may cover pregnancy complications.

How are Pregnancy Complications defined in my travel protection plan?

So what is a pregnancy complication? It’s important to know how World Nomads Travel Insurance plans define it. The following wording is directly from the plan document:

Complications of Pregnancy means conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy. These conditions include hyperemesis gravidarum, preeclampsia, eclampsia, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, acute nephritis, nephrosis, cardiac decompensation, and missed abortion. Complications of pregnancy also include non-elective cesarean section, ectopic pregnancy which is terminated and spontaneous termination of pregnancy, which occurs during a period of gestation in which a viable birth is not possible.

Complications of pregnancy do not include Physician-prescribed rest during the period of pregnancy (except due to conditions noted above), false labor, occasional spotting, morning sickness, elective abortion, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy, not constituting a categorically distinct complication of pregnancy.

What May Be Covered for Pregnancy Complications

Important to Know

  • Normal labor and childbirth, and routine check-ups are notcovered
  • False labor or morning sickness are not covered. Only reasons listed in your plan documents may be covered
  • In order to be eligible for coverage, you must be able to travel when you purchased the plan, and we recommend not travelling against your doctor’s orders
  • Optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ travel insurance coverage may be beneficial for pregnancy

Take your medical records with you when you’re traveling while pregnant

Another non-insurance service included when you purchase a World Nomads plan is access to our portable records service partner. They have a secure solution that allows you immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world. If you’re traveling and end up in the hospital because of unexpected complications related to pregnancy, you’ll want your medical team to know about your prescriptions, allergies, medical conditions, immunization and more. It’s included, but you’ll need to register once you purchase a plan that includes coverage for pregnancy complications. Taking the time to set this up could be lifesaving for you and your baby if you unexpectedly have a medical emergency while you’re pregnant and traveling.

Tips we recommend for traveling while pregnant

  • Always check with your doctor before traveling. If your doctor says you shouldn’t be traveling, and you do anyway, you may not be covered by your travel insurance coverage for pregnancy complications.
  • Check with your travel providers to see if they have any restrictions for traveling while pregnant. For example, some airlines and cruises may not allow you to board when you’ve passed a certain point in your pregnancy.
  • Before you leave, see if you need a note from your doctor. Some airlines may ask for a doctor’s note that states how far along you are in your pregnancy and confirms that you aren’t high risk.
  • Book an aisle seat. It makes it easier to get up and down to go to the restroom.
  • To help with circulation, wear compression socks when flying or taking long rides in a car or on a train. According to the National Institutes of Health, women are up to five times more likely to develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) when they are pregnant. The potential for these blood clots may increase when you’re traveling and not moving for long periods of time.
  • Drink plenty of water. The American Heart Association says that dehydration can cause Braxton-Hicks contractions.
  • Pack all of your medications in your carry-on bag. If you have World Nomad Travel Insurance that may include coverage for pregnancy complications, it can also include coverage for lost and delayed bags, but you won’t want to be without any necessary medications.
  • Avoid strenuous excursions. Even though World Nomads covers over 250 sports, activities and experiences, you may want to save some adventures like bungee jumping until after the baby arrives. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.
20251212-5058490. TThis is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of maximums, terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your state specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for pregnancy. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Can I fly while I’m pregnant?
That’s up to you to discuss with your doctor. Your airline might ask for a letter from your doctor confirming your expected due date and whether you’re at risk of any complications. It is important to check your airline’s policy regarding pregnancy. If you get to the airport and your airline won’t let you fly, you may not be able to make a claim.
  • What complications of pregnancy may be covered?

Complications of Pregnancy are conditions (when the pregnancy is not terminated) whose diagnoses are distinct from pregnancy but are adversely affected by pregnancy or are caused by pregnancy.

If you have questions, contact us and ask.

  • How do I make a claim?

You can make a claim online, but you’ll need to provide required documents that may include:

    • Copies of receipts and invoices showing the unused, forfeited, prepaid,

non-refundable travel expenses that you paid for in advance and weren’t able to use because of your pregnancy complications

    • Copies of receipts and invoices for medical expenses
    • Documentation from your medical team showing that they advised you not to travel

You must notify us within 20 days of any losses and submit your documentation within 90 days or as soon as reasonably possible.

How does a waiting period work?

  • If you buy a travel policy when you're overseas and the policy start date is within 72 hours of issue of your certificate of insurance, you'll need to wait 72 hours for cover to begin.
  • If you buy a travel insurance policy when you're overseas and the policy start date is 72 hours or more after the issue of your certificate of insurance, cover for Cancellation or Trip Interruption expenses will begin 72 hours from the time we issue the policy, with all other benefits commencing on your departure date.

Cover for medical emergencies

While there is a 72-hour waiting period if you purchase your travel insurance after you’ve started travelling, both our Standard and Explorer policies may offer cover for overseas medical expenses and medical evacuation and repatriation after the policy departure date and before the end of the 72-hour waiting period.

If something goes wrong and you suffer a serious injury as the result of an accident, there may be cover for emergency overseas medical and dental expenses, and emergency evacuation and repatriation expenses, without having to wait 72 hours.

All other cover and benefits still begin 72 hours from when your certificate of insurance is issued, and only for events first occurring after the 72-hour waiting period.

Need to extend your policy?

If you’re travelling and decide you want to travel for longer, we can help you stay covered by extending your existing policy for up to 12 months. Simply sign into your World Nomads membership to check eligibility and extend your cover before 11:59pm AEST/AEDT on the return date shown on your certificate of insurance. Bitten by a tick in Colombia

I was bitten by a tick in Sierra Nevada region on my trip in Colombia, and infected by borrelia. A doctor examined me and I have received treatment for borreliose with antibiotics and probiotics. However, as the brain fog and dizziness persisted even during continuing treatment, the emergency assistance team organised medical repatriation as it is not safe for me to travel with these symptoms.
