Cover your tech while you’re working or traveling overseas

  • Trusted by:

This information is for US travelers. Taking your tech on your next trip will be as likely as taking a few pairs of underwear (that's assuming you wear them). That's why our travel insurance policies have been designed for digital nomads, helping cover your tech whether you're updating your social network or working in a hub.

Travel Insurance: How are my electronics covered?

As you'd expect, our policies for US residents can cover iPhones, Smartphones, iPads, Kindles, Tablets, Cameras, lenses and laptops. But how we can cover your items (and how much) depends on a few things, like the type of policy you choose, and where and how your item was damaged or stolen.

Your electronics are covered if they were:

  • Stolen while under your supervision

Remember, if you make a claim, we will depreciate your items due to age, wear, and tear. And of course there are terms and conditions to think about. Read your policy, terms and conditions, and exclusions carefully, so you know what you're covered for.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

  • Leaving your gear behind
  • If it was stolen from a locked safe or unattended car
  • If it was damaged by a fire or natural
  • Gear or equipment that you use for business
  • Electronic malfunctions (you'll have to hit up the manufacturer)
  • Gear older than the policy can cover
  • Where you can't prove that you own the item, e.g no receipts.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions that apply, so for more information check out our article on baggage cover and personal effects and read your policy carefully before you buy.

Tips for Digital Nomads

  • Find and scan your receipts before your leave
  • If an airline loses your gear, tell them straight away and get it in writing.
  • Theft? Report it to the police within 24 hours.
  • If you’ve got a handset or tablet that can be blocked, block it.
  • You can claim at home or on the road.

Bumpy Ride.

On an overnight train from Mumbai to Jodhpur in India, I had the top sleeper berth. It was a very bumpy ride and my tote bag tipped over while I was sleeping. I got woken up by the sound of my camera hitting the floor (funny -- I slept through the seven snorers...). When I picked it up the display screen on the back of the camera was grey/black and hasn't worked since.
