Travel insurance for digital nomads

If you're a digital nomad and don’t have health insurance coverage abroad, travel insurance can help with unexpected illness and injury.

As a digital nomad, the world is your office. There are endless possibilities of where you can plant yourself with a laptop and roam.

World Nomads’ travel insurance plans are designed to adapt to the choice and flexibility of your lifestyle on the road. You can purchase a policy for periods of up to 180 days (or several plans for continuous coverage). You can even buy your travel insurance post-departure.

Does World Nomads travel insurance cover my tech?

In today’s tech-centric world, taking your gadgets on the road is just as common and essential as packing an extra pair of socks. That's why our travel insurance plans have been designed for digital nomads.

World Nomads may be able to replace, repair or recover the costs of your personal tech devices when stolen, lost or damaged under your supervision. Benefits are available only after exhausting other sources of compensation, such as from your airline or other transportation carrier.

Remember, depreciation and wear and tear are taken into account, and claims are subject to per item and total maximum benefit amounts.

Digital nomad health coverage

Another important consideration for traveling for extended periods is health insurance. What should you do if you get into an accident or get terribly sick?

First things first. You shouldn’t think of travel insurance as a replacement for a health care plan that you would purchase at home — or depend on the charity of another country to pick up your medical bills. Travel insurance won’t pay for everyday or preventative care, such as allergy medications, birth control pills, nutritional consultations or the CBD cream that could relieve the back pain that’s been nagging you for years. But a snake bite, bout with food poisoning or ski accident? You can count on World Nomads plans to come in handy during medical emergencies — and that includes evacuation when you need to get to a hospital urgently or back to the United States for care.

When you’re far from home, the last thing you want to do is to face a crisis alone. Don’t forget about our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. You can — and should — contact us  when you find yourself in an urgent situation. Besides offering hospital and physician referrals (we vet our providers very carefully), the team can make sure you get negotiated rates and provide other methods of support, such as notifying your family or even arranging food delivery to your hospital room.

What's not covered by travel insurance for digital nomads?

When it comes to baggage and personal belongings, the following exclusions apply:

  • When you leave your personal belongings behind in an unsupervised place.
  • Gear or equipment that you use for professional purposes.
  • Electronic malfunctions (You'll have to hit up the manufacturer).
  • When you fail to file a loss or theft report with the local authorities or the representative of the venue where it took place, such as a common carrier, tour operator or other travel provider.
  • Items that you can’t prove you own (for example, you don’t have a record of their purchase).

For emergency medical and evacuation, coverage is not provided for:

  • Any medical bills related to a pre-existing condition.
  • A non-emergency treatment or surgery, such as routine physical examinations (it’s not regular health insurance; it’s for medical emergencies).
  • Pregnancy and childbirth (except for complications of pregnancy).

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. Also visit our Help Center articles on baggage and personal belongings and emergency medical coverage. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. If you have any questions about what is and is not covered, please reach out – we’re happy to help.

Tips for digital nomads

  • Find and scan your receipts before your leave.
  • If an airline loses your gadgets, notify them right away and get a record.
  • Theft? Report it to the police within 24 hours.
  • If you’ve got a handset or tablet that can be blocked, block it.
  • Make a claim within seven days; submit documentation within 90 days.

Bumpy Ride in India

On an overnight train from Mumbai to Jodhpur in India, I had the top sleeper berth. It was a very bumpy ride, and my tote bag tipped over while I was sleeping. I got woken up by the sound of my camera hitting the floor. When I picked it up, the display screen on the back of the camera was grey/black and hasn't worked since.

Here are our most frequently asked questions about tech gear coverage for digital nomads. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • How do my items get depreciated?
Electronics age and get knocked about. Depreciation happens to match the claim to the item’s current price, not original retail price. If you have the receipts, your items will be reduced in value by 10% percent for each year from the purchase date.
