Does Travel Insurance Cover Terrorism?

Find out how we could help if you're caught up in a terror attack.

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Our travellers know that staying aware at all times is key to staying safe, but there are some things you can never anticipate, and a terrorist event is one of those.

A terrorism event is defined as: An event that has been declared a terrorism event by the government of your country of residence or by the government of the country where the event happened, not including a terrorist attack that involves the use or threat of nuclear, chemical, or biological devices or cyber terrorism.

What can travel insurance cover if there's a terrorism event?

In the event of a terrorist attack, our travel insurance (Explorer Plan only) offers limited cover:

You cancel or cut short your trip: If a terrorism event occurs within 20 kilometres of your booked accommodation within 7 days of your trip start date or while you are on your trip. The Explorer plan may cover for your non-refundable expenses, and if your trip is cut short, some additional expenses incurred to get home, too.

You decide to stay and travel: If you decide to stay and travel, as long as there is no directive from the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence advising you to leave the area/to not travel to the area, your cover will continue.

You’re injured or die in a terrorist attackIf you’re injured or die in a terrorist attack, our policies may provide cover for emergency medical and dental expenses abroad. You can’t have travelled against the advice of the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence advising against All Travel, or participated in the terrorist activity (obviously).

You miss your flight or it is delayed: You are unable to reach your departure point, flight is delayed or your return flight home is delayed due to a terrorism event. The Explorer plan may offer cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses.

You are forced to move from your pre booked accommodation: You are on your trip and after checking in, you become aware your pre booked accommodation is uninhabitable due to a terrorism event. We will pay for the same standard of accommodation if you are forced to move into an alternative at the same destination, if your travel provider does not provide an alternative.

If you have to leave where you are staying and leave your stuff behind: If you are told that you have to evacuate the country you are in and you leave personal belongings behind, there will be cover under this policy (up to the maximum benefit limits).

Our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Team can help you navigate next steps if you’re caught up in the chaos and aftermath of an attack.

What’s not covered by travel insurance if there's a terrorism event?

Terrorist events are understandably traumatic. However, if you’re worried one might occur, or following an attack you want to travel elsewhere or return home, we may consider that to be a change of mind in the circumstances, and we won’t cover you for those costs to change your plans.

In addition, our policy does not cover:

  • Non-medical evacuation
  • If you change your mind.
  • Travelling against a non-essential advisory and the cause of the claim relates to the advisory.
  • Buying a policy after the event happens will not cover you for any event-related injuries

You must also remember that if you knowingly put yourself in danger, or are aware of events that may lead to a claim, this is excluded under the policy. This means if there’s a warning of a terrorist attack or you were likely to have had knowledge there might be one, and you put yourself at risk by travelling to or staying in the vicinity of that area, then your cover may be excluded.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details, so there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

How to get help if you're hurt in a terrorism event

Travel Insurance for Stolen Passports

How travel insurance could help if your passport is stolen while traveling.

We know how difficult it is to be overseas without a passport so we’ve designed our travel insurance to give you the extra level of support you need to get a replacement passport… fast.

How does travel insurance cover stolen passports?

You’re not going anywhere without a passport so World Nomads knows getting a replacement one is a pretty high priority. Our travel insurance plans can provide cover which includes:

  • The cost of replacing the passport
  • Necessary transportation charges to get to and from the authorities and consular office
  • Cost of photos for the new passport

What’s not covered by travel insurance for a lost or stolen passport?

While we’ll help cover the cost of replacing your passport, some of the things we won’t cover include:

  • Costs related to the time involved in replacing your passport
  • Stolen passports if left unsupervised such as if you left it behind somewhere, mislaid it or if you didn’t take reasonable care to protect it
  • Stolen passports when the theft was not observed when occurring

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Passport stolen in Bulgaria.

My wallet was stolen in a bus in Bulgaria, and I could not reach the thief. I could just see she was a woman. I lost my passport, my driving licence, and some other stuff such as some cash. I made a police report regarding the matter, which is in Bulgarian language. It says e.g. my passport and my driving lisence were stolen. I had to go to Finnish Embassy of Bulgaria to get a new passport. However, they only issued emergency passports so that is what I had to get. However, that only lasted for a month, and I had to get another proper passport (for 5 years -my previous passport before the theft was obviously this 5 year passport as well) now in Finnish Embassy of Sweden where I was at that time. Driving licence I could renew only in Finland, and because I came to Finland for the first time after my trip now during the summer 2015, I renewed my driving licence at this time.

Travel Insurance for Stolen or Damaged Baggage

If your gear has been stolen or damaged, here's how we can help.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

When you’re travelling, you don’t always have control over what happens to your gear: it can get stolen, damaged, be sent to the wrong airport or get lost permanently in transit. That’s where baggage and personal belongings cover can help.

Baggage and personal belongings travel insurance: What's covered?

World Nomads plans for residents of most countries offer coverage for your luggage and personal items you take with you. Cover includes:

  • Necessities (e.g underwear & toiletries) if your baggage is delayed for at least 24 hours.
  • The value of any items lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed with a deduction for wear and tear.
  • Specific items you have paid an additional insurance premium for and which are shown on your Certificate of Insurance. (Deduction for wear and tear does not apply).
  • The additional cost of obtaining a replacement passport or visa including fees that you would otherwise not have paid.
  • If you buy the Explorer Plan, the policy also covers accidental loss or theft of your own money while you were carrying it or if you left it in a locked safety deposit box.

What’s not covered?

There are a number of items our policies don't cover and if you don’t look after your belongings properly, you may not be covered either.

  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure.
  • If you don't report a theft or loss to the police (within 24 hours) and appropriate carrier or authority as soon as reasonably possible of the theft or loss being discovered. Get a written report!
  • Personal baggage stolen from an unattended vehicle unless locked away and not visible from the outside and there are signs of forced entry.
  • Sporting equipment while in use.
For more information check out our article on baggage cover and personal effects and read your policy carefully before you buy.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover please contact us for help.

Travel Insurance Baggage Tips:

  • Find and scan your receipts before your leave
  • If an airline loses your gear, tell them straight away and get it in writing.
  • Theft? Report it to the police as soon as you reasonably can.
  • If you’ve got a handset or tablet that can be blocked, block it.
  • You can claim at home or on the road.

Robbed in Guatemala.

I was walking down the sidewalk of 11 Avenida with my backpack on the back. I wanted to check something in my Lonely Planet, so I took the backpack to the front, with one strap still one my shoulder. I had just put the book back and was about to zip the backpack closed (after 10-20 seconds) when it was suddenly ripped out of my grip. Even though I was holding on to it, the surprise and force allowed them to grap it anyway, before they speeded away. In the backpack was my camera lens (I was fortunately wearing the camera with a strap around my neck), my wallet with money I had cashed in an ATM a couple of days before, the guidebook and some clothes (jeans, socks and a hoodie). There were no personal documents as I had left them in my hotel room. I reported the theft to the police about two hours later.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for baggage. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • If the airlines loses my gear, what do I need?
You’ll need a Property Irregularity Report (‘PIR’) from the carrier confirming the delay and any compensation they provided to you or offered to you, your receipts and a copy of your itinerary.
  • Do my items get depreciated?
Yes they do. However, an upgrade will let you pay an additional premium per item so you can insure them for the value you bought them (if it's under the limits).

Travel Insurance for Flight Cancellation

For when you're ready to go but your plane isn't.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

You’ve made it… you’ve got your passport, baggage and are at the airport on-time and ready to head off. The only problem is your plane isn't going anywhere.

That’s where travel insurance for flight cancellation can give you a helping hand, covering some of your expenses until you can get on another flight.

How does travel insurance cover flight cancellation?

If your flight is unexpectedly cancelled through no fault of your own, and the event that led to the disruption is an insured event, our policies offer cover for additional necessary and reasonable costs (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Local transportation.
  • Meals…Sorry – that 3 star Michelin restaurant is probably not considered necessary and reasonable.
  • Hotel accommodation (overnight stay) if required.

You must be aware that before submitting a claim to us, you must claim a refund or compensation from the transportation provider first.

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

To make a claim you will need to be able to show proof of the flight cancellation from the carrier and keep all receipts, otherwise we will not be able to pay.  Other items we won’t cover include:

  • If you can claim your meals, additional expenses and accommodation and transport costs from someone else, like the carrier that was responsible for your flight
  • If you knew when you booked or bought your tickets there were circumstances that would likely result in a travel delay.
  • The cancelled flight is due to a change in travel plans, change of mind or disinclination to travel
  • Your expenses are not considered reasonable or are above the limits shown in the Table of Benefits (only additional expenses are covered)

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Cyclone cancels flight.

I had a flight from Kosrae (Federated Stated of Micronesia) to Honolulu, Hawai. The flight was cancelled by United due to weather conditions (according to them their plane could not leave from Guam due to the Vanuatu cyclone). Therefore I had to spend one more night in Kosrae, paying for lunch, dinner and accommodation. The airline declined to pay for the hotel or other expenses as the cancellation was due to weather conditions.

Travel insurance for hiking & trekking - World Nomads

Simple and flexible travel insurance to take you trekking around the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

Whether it’s the trek or the view you’re chasing, the world’s great hiking destinations will leave you breathless. From Europe’s alpine trails to the mist-soaked rainforests of Costa Rica, hiking has a magic all its own.

Preparation is paramount to any hiking adventure abroad; learning about the area, checking the route and making sure you have the right gear in case bad weather rolls in. Along with a trusty map, it helps to pack travel insurance if hiking accidents stop you in your tracks.

What’s covered for hiking and trekking?

Are you an experienced European hiker looking for your next big challenge or are you happier on a relaxed family hike? No matter how adventurous your hiking plans, World Nomads plans may offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Emergency medical: overseas emergency medical expenses at a hospital or medical centre if you suffer an unexpected injury or illness while hiking. You’ll need to contact the 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team. Expenses must be medically necessary and agreed by the insurer in order to receive reimbursement of your covered expenses.
  • Evacuation: we offer approved overseas emergency medical evacuation to the most appropriate medical facility for treatment or repatriation back to your country of residence. Emergency transport is subject to approval from the 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team.
  • Trip cancellation: has a sick or injured travelling companion put a stop to your hiking break? Your plan may be able to recover your unused non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Gear protection: had your camera stolen while hiking in Thailand? Our gear coverage can help with replacing belongings that were swiped from under your nose. You’ll need a police report to submit with your claim as well as copies of the original receipts and supporting documentation.
  • Lost or damaged baggage cover: have your bags or personal items gone missing? You must report all theft or loss to the common carrier, service provider or other local authority as soon as possible. You must also get a Property Irregularity Report or other incident report from the carrier so you can submit it with your claim. Where your belongings have been stolen, you must also report it to the local police and obtain a police report. These reports, and copies of the original receipts and any luggage tickets, can be submitted with your claim.
  • Delayed baggage cover: has your checked-in baggage been delayed for more than 24 hours? Your plan may cover essential items you purchase while you’re waiting for your baggage to arrive.

Choose a plan that suits your needs

Both our Standard Plan and Explorer Plan may offer many of the same benefits including cover for hiking or trekking up to 6,000 metres, you just need to select the maximum elevation you’ll be hiking to at the time of your quote.

If you’re lucky enough to have some extra adventure or sport activities planned such as kayaking or mountaineering, check out our article on covered sports and activities, which will help you select the optional upgrades you’ll need to add to your plan when you buy your policy as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, please read your policy wording carefully or contact us if you have any questions.

What’s not covered for hiking?

Sorry – we won’t cover you if you do something reckless (such as tackling an extreme hiking trip into a remote area when you’re only a beginner). Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Free mountaineering, climbing in remote or inaccessible regions, exploratory expeditions and new routes, high altitude climbing over 6,000 metres, mountaineering expeditions or expeditions to the Arctic or Antarctica or of a dangerous nature.
  • Search and rescue operations to find or rescue you, as per your policy wording.
  • Any adventure or sport activity graded above the actvity level specified on your Certificate of Insurance.
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team advise you to do.
  • If you do not follow the local safety advice and warnings.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g. transport carriers, accommodation providers, credit card issuers or other insurance policies.
  • Medical treatment that can wait until your return home.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times.

How to get the most out of your travel insurance

Before you head for the hills, the following tips can help you maximise your safety and validity of cover.

  • Inform a local assistance company of your trekking route and policy details.
  • If you require any medical treatment during your trip abroad you must contact our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance Team when you are aware you will be admitted as an inpatient for at least one night.
  • Check which countries your trail passes through to ensure your policy covers you for that region.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You can read more about hiking and travel insurance and you should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Working overseas? Get travel insurance for your holidays.

In today's interconnected world, more and more people are embracing the freedom of living and working abroad as expats or digital nomads. Whether you're setting up a home base in a new country or embarking on a nomadic journey, consider travel insurance when packing for your overseas adventures.

With World Nomads travel insurance you can be covered for benefits from medical emergencies to damaged, lost or stolen tech, cancellations and trip interruptions and more than 150 activities and sports, so you can focus on exploring new horizons.

Why expats and digital nomads should consider travel insurance:

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

Here are a few reasons why expatriates and digital nomads keep coming back to World Nomads for their travel insurance:

Flexible policies

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so we have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long, or as little, as you need. You can choose the policy and options that suit your needs and manage your policy in our online portal.

Accessible coverage even after you’ve left home

Our travel insurance is available to most nationalities living or traveling outside of their country of residence. You can purchase our policies online and you don’t have to be in your country of residence to purchase it; however there are some exceptions to this, so please check the policy before purchasing.

Cover for multiple destinations

If you're a digital nomad travelling to multiple countries, World Nomads travel insurance offers cover for with multiple destinations to ensure you're protected wherever your journey takes you.

Cover for unexpected cancellations

Unforeseen events such as family emergencies or job changes may force you to cancel or cut short your trip. World Nomads travel insurance may reimburse you for non-refundable expenses depending on what has happened and your specific circumstances.

Cover to suit your needs and budget

To help meet the needs of expats we offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer - each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits so you can choose the plan that suits you.

Planning on some adventures?

Part of living and working abroad is having adventures! Depending on your country of residence and the plan you have selected , our policies can offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences, including working and volunteering. Some of the activities we can cover include:

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing is covered, please contact us.

Expat tip: be sure to have the appropriate visa to work under the local laws of the country you’re visiting.

Cover for accidents and injuries

Our policies can cover emergency overseas medical expenses, (up to the policy limits and when agreed by us, for up to 12 months from the date the illness first appears or injury happens) for events including:

The 24/7 emergency assistance team can arrange medical transport, locate the closest medical facility, and give support to you and your family.

Expat tip: travel insurance is not health insurance. Our policies will not cover you for ongoing care. Your employer or host should take care of your medical cover.

Cover for your tech

If you’re living and working abroad, your tech is your lifeline. Whether you’re plugging into your social network or surfing remotely from a shared workspace, we can help protect your laptop, smart phones, devices and other personal items and baggage, up to certain limits and depending on the plan you choose. For more information on how to cover your tech gear read our Help Center FAQ.

Expat tip: keep a copy of receipts for your electronics as you will need them in the event of a claim.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything so make sure you read the Policy Wording for what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Some of the main things that aren’t covered include:

  • Any pre-existing medical condition
  • Where care is available under any Reciprocal Health Care Agreement
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government warning of ‘Do Not Travel’ issued by the U.S. Department of State.
  • Some types of work and duties such as working at heights, operating machinery, working offshore and underground, and working with dangerous animals.
  • Participation in any adventure sports, activities, work, study or volunteer experiences where you don’t select the appropriate upgrade or where it is specifically excluded
  • Anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the Policy Wording.

FAQ's

  • How long can I be covered for?

The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months from the start date. If you need cover beyond 12 months, you can buy a new policy.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

This isn't health insurance!

Expats must be aware this is travel insurance not health insurance.

This means it will not cover you for ongoing medical care. It also excludes many pre-existing conditions as well as any medical treatment that is not considered necessary by our medical specialists. If you’re not sure if you’ll be covered for something, contact us and we can help.

Essential travel insurance tips for travelling through India

India is a destination like nowhere else in the world. Steeped in sacred tradition, ablaze with colour, and emanating a culinary aroma all its own - the moment you step off the plane in India your entire being is enraptured. But just because a country has captured your heart and soul doesn’t mean a jaunt through its wonders will come hassle free.

Keep the harmony in balance with these essential tips that can help us help you if ever the need arises.

Culinary delight or medical emergency?

So you’ve arrived in India, homeland of tikka, korma, and madras curry. There’s just one little thing lurking, ready to knock you and your travel plans off their feet… gastro!

Otherwise known as “Rangoon runs,” “Delhi belly”, or just plain diarrhea, it singlehandedly derails more Nomads’ trips to the Taj than any other insurance claim in India. Many Nomads have experienced gastro before and know the standard precautions to take: check the seals on bottles, wash your hands, and only eat steaming hot food that’s cooked in front of you.

What you may not be ready for is the impact of a full-blown episode of authentic, Indian-food inspired gastro that scoffs at the western medicine you may have in your backpack and throws it back in your face… literally. Indian gastro typically hangs around a lot longer than you might expect if not treated with the right medication early. Combine that with the often-unrelenting heat of an Indian summer, and dehydration can leave you very ill.

To find out more about what you may be covered for when it comes to health emergencies check out our travel health article.

How can World Nomads’ travel insurance help with Delhi belly?

We recommend travelers with a World Nomads policy contact us earlier rather than later if they get a bout of gastro in India – we really don’t want you to miss seeing the Taj or, even worse, your connecting flight to your next destination.

A local operator can help you place a reverse charge call to our 24-hour, 7 days a week team who are trained to deal with these situations, or you can look to claim back the cost of the call later. We’ll be able to give you info on what to do next, help locate local suitable medical facilities where you can be seen by a medical professional who can prescribe antibiotics or other medication and, if necessary, arrange hospitalization depending on the severity of your gastro.

Policies vary depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you’ve chosen. Cover can include emergency local medical expenses and the costs of your trip being interrupted if the furthest you’re able to travel is to the toilet and back.

Find out how to (try to..) avoid Delhi belly and stay healthy while in India with these top tips.

Lightening your load… and your valuables

Before you hop on that 15-hour Mumbai to Goa bus, there are some things you need to know, because if you don’t take the right precautions, your policy may not cover you for theft. Cover varies depending on the plan you’ve chosen and your Country of Residence (so make sure you read the policy terms and conditions), but generally, travelers must be able to show they took “reasonable care” to protect their valuables.

In India, this means if you leave your bags where they might be rifled through – such as at your feet on a busy bus, in the train baggage compartment or with people you’ve only just met – you may not be covered. Beautiful India… gorgeous, exotic, stunning and oh so dangerous for the unprepared. Before you head off on the Spice Trail, here are the top 3 tips to help protect yourself and your gear.

Consider protecting yourself and your gear

If your country’s government advice is to not travel to a particular area in India, your travel insurance can be void if you book or travel there. Lock your luggage and use under-clothing wallet holders for important documents, passport, and credit cards, with a small amount of rupee on hand for the journey’s expenses. Take turns sleeping on public transport, never leave your bags unattended or with someone you’ve just met, and always stay aware.

One of our Nomads reported having his bag stolen from under his sleeping head, so if it’s not zipped in, padlocked, and secured out of sight, you may lose it. Before you travel, make sure you have receipts for your valuables, and keep your passport, bank details, and photocopies throughout your bags. You will need a police report to claim, and even though those local Indian police stations can be frustrating to deal with. Do try to get something in writing and document everything you do – the more information you can provide with your claim, the better.

Steer clear of scams

Like pickpockets, scams are rife in India. The good news is if you know how to spot a scam before you go, you’re less likely to fall victim to the often-convincing trap of a scam.

Places like tourist attractions, train stations, and bustling streets are a free for all peppered with dodgy scammers on the lookout for fresh travelers. This article on ‘How to Avoid Common Scams When Traveling in India’ is a good place to become acquainted with how to spot a scam when you’re presented with one. But if there’s a key takeaway it’s reminding yourself if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

Hidden treasure or dangerous conflict zone?

If you want to go off-the-beaten-track in India, you really need to do your research first to ensure you’re not going to void your travel insurance, or worse, end up in jail, injured, or dead.

As they’re often disputed and unmarked, borders between India and its neighbors can be particularly risky to travel to.

If your country’s government advice is to not travel to a particular area in India, your travel insurance can be void if you book or travel there, intentionally putting yourself in harm’s way. Common areas that many countries recommend you do not travel to in India include:

  • In the north: the areas of Jammu, Kashmir and Srinagar (including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg) experience sporadic terrorist activity and violent demonstrations, which travelers might get caught up in.
  • To the west: various warnings exist for the immediate vicinity of the border with Pakistan in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab due to landmines and unexploded ordnance.
  • To the east: areas in Assam bordering Bangladesh, and areas in Manipur and Nagaland bordering Myanmar may be “No Travel” areas due to the risk of insurgency.

Encountering mishap while on the road is never fun, and even worse, with void travel insurance, if anything goes wrong, you’re entirely on your own.

Always check your insurance policy and your government’s current list of travel warnings before you book your travel to India. World Health Organization can also provide the latest updates for travelers headed to India. If you’re not sure, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink the water in India?

This is a firm no. Tap water in India is not safe for drinking, brushing your teeth, or slurping in the shower. It’s also advisable to stay away from foods that may have been washed with tap water, such as lettuce and other salad items. A good rule of thumb is if it’s not cooked or peeled it’s not safe. And don’t forget to say ‘no thanks’ to ice cubes in your drink - they’ve been made from tap water.

What vaccines do I need when traveling to India?

While no specific vaccination is required to enter the country—unless you’re traveling to India from a yellow fever affected region—most home countries will recommend some vaccinations. These typically include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and meningitis. Speak to your medical provider well in advance of your trip to ensure you’re properly covered.

Is malaria an issue in India?

Yes, malaria continues to be an issue throughout India. While the risk of contracting malaria in areas such as Delhi is lower, it’s still possible. Seek out medical advice before traveling to India to ensure you’re protected from malaria while overseas.
