  • The Inca Trail
  • Trekking in Nepal
  • Mount Kilimanjaro
  • The Pacific Coast Trail

  • Camping, scrambling, tramping and backpacking (elevation restrictions may apply)
  • Rock climbing, bouldering and mountaineering (elevation restrictions apply)

Hiking up to 3,000 meters is automatically covered as a level 1 activity. You can upgrade your plan to include hiking up to 6,000 meters as a level 3 activity. We do not cover hiking over 6,000 meters.

Be aware that terms, conditions, limits, exclusions may apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and adventure sport option for your hiking trip. If you have any questions, please reach out.

What does hiking travel insurance cover?

Whether you’re dusting off your boots for a few hours on the trail or going on a multi-day expedition to a far-flung corner of the globe, our policies may cover you for sudden and unforeseen events that could affect your travel plans.

World Nomads offers cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Emergency medical: if you fall and sprain your ankle while hiking and need medical attention, we offer emergency medical coverage so you can get the treatment you need. You must be covered under your GHIP for the full duration of your policy to be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits. If you do not have GHIP coverage while on your trip, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the duration of your trip.
  • Emergency evacuation: your hiking adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With our hiking travel insurance coverage, you could get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. If your injuries are worse than first thought, you could be repatriated back to your home province.
  • Baggage protection: Our gear coverage may help with repairing or replacing damaged, lost or stolen items.
  • Trip cancellation: if your hiking trip is cancelled due to an unforeseen event such as illness, you may be able to recover your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses, depending on your plan. Covered reasons for trip cancellation will be outlined in your policy documents.

What’s not covered?

There are also some things we won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Hiking or climbing while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Mountaineering, high altitude climbing or expeditions above 6,000 meters.
  • Participation as an athlete in any professional sports.
  • Working as a mountain guide or rock-climbing instructor or guide using ropes or specialist equipment.
  • If you travel against medical advice.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Unattended baggage, sporting equipment or personal items.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of any instructors and guides – if they aren’t certified then reconsider whether it’s a smart move to go.
  • Get hike fit: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. Be sure you are physically capable of it.
  • Be responsible: Before you start your trek, make sure your chosen trek suits everyone’s experience level and if you’re going guided, that you’re using an accredited tour operator. Wear appropriate safety gear.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim with on your hiking travel insurance policy.

When you’re ready, head to our website to get a quote, compare our Standard and Explorer plans, and reach out if you have any questions. Happy trekking!

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions, and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Be prepared: we recommend that you check the weather, check your equipment, and if you’re going guided, confirm that you’re using an accredited tour operator.
  • Stay healthy: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases (like the Inca Trail or trekking in Nepal), the ability to handle altitude. It’s best to be sure you are physically capable of it. Consider using our non-insurance service partner Runway Health to initiate an online consultation to obtain prescription medications for the most common travel needs, like altitude sickness pills, delivered to your door before you leave on your trip.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases and a loss or theft report. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you need to make a claim.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your plan document for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. Exclusion applies to Adventure or Extreme Activities.
