Whether you have specific skills to offer or you’re in search of meaningful connectionsvolunteering abroad can be life changing experience. While out in the world helping others, make sure you also look after yourself and consider buying travel insurance before you pack your bags.

World Nomads travel insurance can cover you when participating in a range of round-the-world volunteer activities and vacations, from summer teaching programs to clean water projects. Whatever the cause, we’re strong supporters of paying it forward and giving back.

What's covered

Want to step out into the world and volunteer your time? Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected, World Nomads travel insurance may provide cover for:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Emergency medical care
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip delay
  • Baggage and personal belongings cover
  • Extend or buy more cover while traveling
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events

Traveler tip 1: if you intend to work or study, you must have the appropriate visa to work or study under the local laws of the country you’re visiting.

Travel insurance cover on our Standard and Explorer plans

At World Nomads, we do our best to support volunteers, whether it's protecting endangered turtle hatching grounds or teaching school children in an under resourced village.

Before you take off on your next volunteer adventure, consider packing travel insurance that provides cover for the things you plan to do.

Volunteer activities our Standard Plan may cover include:

  • Hospitality or work at bars.
  • Farming such as fruit picking, WWOOFing or other manual labor.
  • Wildlife or animal care.
  • Environmental or conservation work.
  • Au pair, nanny or other volunteer childcare.
  • Teaching.
  • Retail work such as shop assistant or store manager role.
  • Office or clerical work.

Volunteer activities our Explorer Plan may cover include:

  • Undertakings in construction or renovation projects, including painting, using power tools, operating machinery, or roadwork.
  • NGO support and disaster relief.
  • Medical and health care work (health education, medical services, medical practitioner).

Note: you can upgrade your cover for a range of other activities and experiences and manual work if you select the activities (listed as Level 2 and 3) and pay any required additional premium at the time you buy your policy.

If you feel unsure about whether your volunteer activity is covered, you can get in touch with our Customer Service team and they will be able to assist you.

Am I covered for Coronavirus-related events?

While volunteer work is rewarding, getting sick while overseas can be costly in more ways than one, especially with Coronavirus still causing major issues worldwide. The cover you will have under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. They include:

  • Standard and Explorer plans: offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Coronavirus (COVID-19) overseas (excluding pre-existing medical conditions, as defined in the policy wording) – cover includes medical assistance, repatriation, and hospitalization.
  • Explorer Plan: additionally, offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events including but not limited to cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some quarantine costs, as well as additional cover for healthcare workers, residential care workers and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave cancelled by their employer due to Coronavirus. Benefit limits apply.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our Coronavirus cover article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

Traveler tip 2: do your research well in advance of your trip around vaccines needed for your intended destination. Make sure you follow government, health department, and World Health Organization preventative and precautionary measures, including any relevant vaccinations, hygiene, or social distancing guidelines. Please refer to who.int for further information.

What’s not covered?

Some volunteer activities may not be covered as they’re just too risky for us to cover. This includes volunteer work that includes:

  • Taking part in activities such as base jumping, wingsuit flying, cliff diving, martial arts competitions, motor sports, and piloting an aircraft among others.
  • Going on dangerous expeditions; mountaineering expeditions or expeditions to inaccessible regions of the Arctic, Antarctica, or Greenland, unless approved by us.
  • Crewing of a vessel more than 60 miles (96.5km) from a protected body of water.
  • Work as a guide where ropes or other specialist climbing equipment is required.
  • Work offshore or underground, including in caves.
  • Work operating machinery or heavy/industrial equipment.
  • Work at height without proper safety equipment.
  • Working with dangerous animals, for example, hippopotami, crocodiles, alligators, sharks, elephants, bears, big cats, and deadly snakes.

Traveler tip 3: you must have the appropriate skills and training and hold the necessary licences and/or certificates for the work you undertake. You should only work from ground level up to two metres above ground, as the risk of injury is significantly increased when working at heights greater than two metres.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas medical insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team. If you’re looking for general travel advice, you can ask our community at Ask a Nomad.

  • Does my insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
Who pays depends on what happened. If it’s an emergency situation, where medical evacuation is required, World Nomads can cover these costs upfront (provided the incident is covered as per the policy wording and you get pre-approval from the Emergency Assistance team). You must contact World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance if you have a medical emergency.

Travel insurance cover and tips for expats

Cover for expats worldwide for medical emergencies, sports and activities, trip cancellations, and more.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

World Nomads travel insurance is designed for adventure seekers who understand that living and working in other countries and among different cultures is a great privilege, and an education. Your decision to move abroad is a big one, considering the benefits of travel insurance may be beneficial for you and your loved ones.

What expats should keep in mind?

We've put together this expat tips checklist to help you plan before you set off on your next working holiday. Please note, benefit limits, terms and conditions apply depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected.

  1. Change is constant, embrace it. Despite detailed planning pre-departure, things can change. We know how important flexibility is when abroad, so you can buy a policy before you leave home or while traveling for as long, or as little, as you need. If you decide to stay longer in a place than you thought you would or decide to change direction on a whim, we are happy to extend your policy and help you choose the right level of cover for your needs.
  2. Vaccinations are not new. For years, there have been rules in place for travelers regarding immunizations against serious illnesses, and the COVID-19 pandemic is no different. When planning your expat experience, check with embassies, global health bodies (such as the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, etc) and government authorities of the countries you're hoping to visit about their entry requirements. Some countries now require proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test result (usually taken 48-72 hours before arrival). Read our COVID-19 Travel Insurance article and keep your vaccine and test records with you – they’re as important as your passport these days.
  3. Not all country entry rules are the same. We know the rules for entry to our own country, but what is acceptable in one country might not be the case in another, so do your research pre-departure. Check the entry rules and regulations for the places you plan to visit. The last thing you want to do is arrive somewhere new to you, only to be turned around for not having the correct paperwork or because you decided to travel to a country that had a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning in place.
  4. It’s not too late to buy travel insurance once you’ve set off. If you’ve been so busy that insurance is an after-thought, it’s never too late. World Nomads offers insurance for travelers between 18 and 65 (up to 69 years for US residents). Our policies are available to most nationalities who are working or traveling outside of their Country of Residence. You can buy a policy online using a credit card, and this can be done even after you’ve left home, but there are some exceptions, so check your policy details before purchasing.
  5. If you plan on driving overseas, do your homework. Driving in another country can be a big deal and at times quite scary, especially when the road rules differ, so make sure you know the requirements. Check the licensing rules (you may need to apply for an international driving permit depending on which country you’re from). Our Explorer Plan policy may be able to help with rental car excess if you’re involved in an accident, but you need to be correctly licensed, adhere to local laws, and have taken out a rental policy with the car hire company.
  6. If you’re a digital nomad, ensure you’re travel ready. Most expat travelers today don’t leave home without their tech devices – we’re talking digital cameras, laptops, air pods, drones etc. Aside from helping to document your travels, they’re not cheap and should be properly protected. At World Nomads, our policies may cover a wide range of everyday gadgets, but how we do that and how much we insure them for depends on the plan you choose. Terms and conditions apply.
  7. Adventure travel is fun, but also risky. Expats are an adventurous bunch, so it’s not surprising that many exciting activities will rate high on the to-do list. Our plans include cover for more than 150 activities globally – everything from backpacking to kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping, but not all are covered under every plan, so read the full list here. You may need to pay an additional premium for higher-risk activities.
  8. Travel cover doesn’t replace international medical insurance. While we may offer cover for overseas emergency medical expenses, any treatment must be certified as medically necessary by an authorized medical practitioner or paramedic overseas and agreed by our Emergency Assistance Team. Your employer or host should take care of your medical cover. We also have some exclusions when it comes to pre-existing conditions. Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 in case of emergencies.

This is not a full list of what's covered. There are benefit limits and terms and conditions that apply. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

Travel Insurance for volunteering

Don't let your good deeds go uncovered.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

At World Nomads, our travel insurance allows you to participate in a range of volunteer activities and vacations, from summer teaching programs to clean water projects. We’re strong supporters of paying it forward and giving back — and what better way to strengthen communities, forge meaningful connections and open your eyes (and arms and hearts) than contributing to a worthy purpose?

What’s covered for volunteers?

Want to step out into the world and volunteer your time? If you need volunteer travel insurance because you want to volunteer overseas, or you’re planning a volunteer vacation, World Nomads plans may cover:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Medical emergency expenses
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Baggage delay
  • Theft of baggage and personal belongings

What volunteer activities may I participate in?

We provide travel insurance cover for a range of non-manual volunteer activities involving light duties only which may include:

  • Retail work such as helping out in a co-op shop.
  • Teaching.
  • Clerical work.
  • Child care.
  • Some volunteering in communities on projects.

For all volunteering work you must wear the right gear, have the right training or be supervised appropriately, and add the activity when you purchase the travel insurance so it’s included in your policy. Some kinds of volunteering require an optional upgrade to your travel insurance cover. If you pay the optional upgrade, travel insurance coverage under your policy may also include volunteer work for manual and non-manual work such as:

  • World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) .
  • Environmental and conservation work that involved farm hand style activities.
  • Manual work or work with power tools under 2 meters in height not involving the use of mechanical or industrial machinery.

Which volunteer activities are excluded

Some volunteer activities may not be covered as they’re just too risky for us to cover, for example volunteer fire-fighting, panther minding or activities in places known to be unsafe or dangerous. This includes volunteer work that includes:

  • Work performed over 2 meters in height.
  • Work performed offshore, underground or in caves.
  • Operating machinery.
  • Working with dangerous animals and / or big game.

If you’re not sure, contact us and we’ll tell you if you’re covered.

What’s not covered?

As a global citizen contributing to good causes, we hope that you’ll act responsibly and within your limits! But just to be clear, we won’t cover any incidents related to:

  • Alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Reckless behavior.
  • Criminal or illegal acts.
  • Changing your mind.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Any volunteer work over 2 meters in height.
  • Personal liability – this means for example, if you hurt or injure someone intentionally in the course of volunteering you will need to pay for it.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

If haven’t yet chosen a volunteer program, you can find inspiration in our article about choosing ethical volunteer programs.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about volunteering insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Does my insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
Who pays depends on what’s happened.

Travel insurance for volunteering

Clean Up Australia Day isn’t the only time us Aussies volunteer.

We have a long and proud history of helping out when we travel abroad, and World Nomads Travel Insurance is a strong supporter of paying it forward and giving back too.

Our travel insurance allows you to participate in a range of volunteer activities and vacations, from summer teaching programs to clean water projects. What better way to strengthen communities, forge meaningful connections and open eyes (and hearts) than by contributing to a worthy purpose?

What’s covered for volunteers?

Want to step out into the world and volunteer your time? If you need volunteer travel insurance because you want to volunteer overseas, or you’re planning a volunteer vacation, World Nomads travel insurance plans may include coverage for:

  • Trip cancellation

  • Trip interruption

  • Medical emergency care

  • Emergency evacuation

  • Baggage delay

  • Theft of baggage and personal belongings

What volunteer activities may I participate in?

While we don’t cover all kinds of volunteering (see the exclusions listed below) the kinds of volunteer work we might cover include:

We cover various kinds of volunteering such as

  • Hospitality including serving the homeless dinner

  • Retail work such as helping out in a co-op shop.

  • General farm work which may include activities such as conservation and environmental work

  • Teaching.

  • Clerical work.

  • Childcare.

If you purchase a higher level of travel insurance cover, you may have travel insurance coverage for volunteer work such as:

  • Manual work or work with power tools or working under 5 metres in height.

  • Volunteer instructor or guide of a covered sport or activity, if you have the appropriate qualification, certification or license to participate in this covered sport, activity or experience and it must not be one of our excluded activities.

Make sure you add the activity when you purchase your travel insurance so it’s included in your policy. If you can’t find the activity in our list, contact us for help.

Which volunteer activities are excluded

Some volunteer activities may not be covered as they’re just too risky for us to cover, for example, volunteer fire-fighting, panther minding or activities in places known to be unsafe or dangerous.

This includes volunteer work that includes:

  • Work performed over 5 metres in height.

  • Work performed offshore, underground or in caves.

  • Operating machinery.

  • Working with dangerous animals and / or big game.

What else isn’t covered?

As a global citizen contributing to good causes, we hope you’ll act responsibly and within your limits! But just to be clear, we won’t cover any incidents related to:

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • Reckless behavior

  • Criminal or illegal acts

  • Changing your mind

  • Pre-existing medical conditions unless specified under your policy

  • Third party compensation and legal expenses

  • Your legal and personal liability following professional advice or other services performed by you as a volunteer.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

It's not always fun.

Due to mishap, my frenulum on my penis got severely damaged. During intercourse with my girlfriend it nearly ripped and caused me a lot of pain and blood. I went to the doctor and he operated on it. Now everything is okay again.
