Spanning almost 760,000mi² (2 million km²), with landscapes including snow-capped volcanos, dense rainforest, and a cultural mix that’s equally diverse, Mexico is a place of art, history, wildlife, adventure and plenty of inspiration.

Despite Mexico’s reputation as a place of drug-related crime in recent years, travellers shouldn’t be deterred from experiencing one of the world’s most colourful cultures. Here are some tips on how to stay safe and how to get the most out of your travel insurance.

Baggage theft in Mexico

Theft is a common travel insurance claims by travellers to Mexico. World Nomads travel insurance plans offer some protection for theft or damage of your baggage and personal effects. Per item and total maximum benefits apply. There is no coverage for certain items, such as antiques, cash or misplaced belongings. Check your policy to see a full list of excluded items.

To file a claim, you’ll need a police report and written confirmation from a hotel manager, tour guide or transportation operator, if relevant. You will also need original receipts or sales slips for all items claimed under baggage and personal effects coverage.

Traveller tip: carry your electronics, passport and valuables with you at all times. Don’t leave them in a car or in your luggage. Lock up your belongings securely when you can’t take them with you. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings, and take a few precautions while exploring to help ensure that your Mexican trip will be safe and fun.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Mexico

The danger of food poisoning and contaminated water, which can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, is that you could lose more fluids than you can keep down. Dehydration can be deadly, so don’t rely on your own instincts or the Internet to get medical advice.

These emergencies can take down even the most experienced traveller. That’s why the services of our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can be the helping hand you need in an emergency situation. The team can give you advice on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care can be tricky) and will monitor your medical treatments to make sure you are given proper care.

At World Nomads, we know how important your health is while travelling, which is why all our policies include emergency medical benefits. Check your policy to see what the maximum amount of coverage you have. If you want to claim your medical expenses, be sure to keep records and receipts of any doctor’s visits and medical treatment, and any other documentation to support your claim.

Traveller tip: stick to purified water, or use purification tablets, and follow your doctor’s advice for any other health recommendations. These preventative steps could save you a lot of trouble.

Is there travel insurance coverage for scuba diving?

We’ve designed our plans to give you the freedom to learn and hone your diving skills by offering coverage for scuba diving and other water sports. Though both our Standard and Explorer plans include benefits for scuba diving, each plan has a different level of coverage and may exclude certain types of diving or dives of a certain depth.

Make note of the types of diving that you’re planning (cavern diving, shark-cage diving) then check our adventure sports page to see if your activity is covered. For some activities, you will need to pay an extra premium in order for coverage to apply.

Traveller tip: Most of the time, the waters are pretty calm in Mexico, but at various times of year, nature decides to challenge the locals and travellers. Riptides and big swells are a potential danger on both coasts, so check conditions before you scuba dive or swim, and don’t go anywhere that has been closed by authorities. Keep an eye on travel advisories, especially during hurricane season.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy.  It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions.  If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.
