Dive into the thrills of scuba diving with World Nomads

Are you ready to plunge into the extraordinary world beneath the waves? Scuba diving is an absolute blast, and World Nomads is here to make sure your underwater adventures are as epic as can be. We've got your back with travel insurance for scuba diving enthusiasts like you. So, let's take a deep dive together to find out more about World Nomads Travel Insurance and scuba diving.

Why travel insurance is essential

Scuba diving is a mind-blowing experience that takes you into a whole new realm. Whether you're exploring the vibrant coral reefs of Hawaii, diving deep in the Red Sea's Sharm El Sheikh, or discovering the awe-inspiring Yongala wreck on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, we want you to enjoy every moment worry-free.

Our travel insurance plans offer cover for various scuba diving experiences, including:

  • Recreational Scuba Diving: Go up to 50 meters deep and discover the hidden treasures beneath the waves. (Additional premium may apply)
  • Learn-to-Dive Courses and Discover Scuba Dives: Take the plunge with qualified instructors who will guide you through your first underwater adventures.
  • Shark Cage Diving: Get up close and personal with these incredible creatures, feeling the adrenaline rush as you witness them in their natural habitat.
  • Snorkeling, Island Escapes, and Live-Aboard Trips: Dive into the crystal-clear waters, explore stunning coral reefs, and embark on unforgettable underwater journeys.

Buying the right level of cover

When selecting your scuba diving travel insurance, it's important to consider the activities you'll be doing during your trip. Here's what you need to know:

  • If you plan to go scuba diving at least once, take into account the type of diving you'll be doing, including the maximum depth and whether you need to be certified. These factors can impact your coverage.
  • Our policy covers conventional scuba diving only. To scuba dive without an instructor, you must hold a current certification from recognised organizations like Professional Association of Diving Instructors (P.A.D.I.), British Sub Aqua Club (S.A.C.), Sub Aqua Association (SAA), Confederation Mondiale Des Activites Subaquatiques (M.A.S.), or an equivalent internationally recognized qualification.
  • Remember, scuba diving requires training and precautions to ensure your safety. If you don't have a recognized qualification, dive only under the constant supervision of a certified instructor and follow their rules and instructions at all times.

Protecting your scuba diving gear

We know that scuba diving equipment doesn't come cheap. That's why we offer cover for high-value items such as scuba tanks, fins, BCDs, regulators, and underwater film and photography equipment. Though we don’t cover sports equipment while it’s in use, it can still be exposed to damage or loss.

In case of delay, loss, or damage to your baggage and scuba diving equipment by a common carrier, follow these steps:

  1. Report the incident to a responsible officer of the carrier as soon as possible.
  2. Obtain a Property Irregularity Report or a similar official report in writing.
  3. Make a claim directly with the carrier before filing a claim with us.

Please refer to your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and conditions related to your coverage.

What's not covered? Stay aware!

While we've got your back during your scuba diving adventures, there are a few things we won't cover. Make sure you avoid the following:

  • Scuba diving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (safety first guys – the open oceans are no place to be cavalier)
  • Competition scuba diving or search and rescue costs
  • Refusal of repatriation or evacuation
  • Engaging in reckless behaviour
  • Ignoring your doctor's instructions or advice from our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team
  • Expenses related to pre-existing medical conditions, as explained in the policy wording
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source
  • The policy amount specified in the policy wording
  • Sporting equipment while in use

Please note that this is just a summary of cover, and it's essential to read your policy wording in full to understand the complete terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions. If you're unsure about your travel insurance cover, our customer service team is here to assist you.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team.

  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency! Should you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation the insurer will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They work very hard to ensure you do not have to pay out-of-pocket. However, should you require to visit an urgent care facility they will not accept any insurance, so you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and, upon your claim being approved, be reimbursed for your expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance when going scuba diving?

Whether you’re an experienced diver or its your first time heading into the deep blue when going diving you may need to have the right level of scuba diving activity under our travel insurance plans

All our plans are different and may require an upgrade to go scuba diving. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip. Terms and conditions and exclusions apply, check your policy for details or contact us.

What are the different levels of activity cover?

There are three different levels of activity and sport coverage under World Nomads policies, these are as follows:

  • Level 1 - Automatically covers Level 1 sports, activities & experiences in the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan
  • Level 2 - Upgrade required - Also includes Level 1 sports, activities & experiences
  • Level 3 - Upgrade required - Also includes Level 1 & 2 sports, activities & experiences.

Simply specify all the sports and activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards.

What am I covered for when scuba diving?

Under our Standard and Explorer plans there are certain special conditions and exclusions depending on the type of scuba diving experience you’re planning. See our list below to know what you’ll be covered or not covered for:

  • Scuba diving (qualified to 30 metres)# (1#) - Covered
  • Scuba diving (qualified to 40 metres)# (2#) - Covered
  • Scuba diving (unqualified/discover diving tour with qualified instructor)* (1*) – Covered
  • Shark cage diving (non-qualified at surface or qualified to scuba dive to 30 metres)*# (1*#) – Covered
  • Cavern diving (qualified to 40 metres)*# (3*#) - Covered
  • Scuba diving - commercial – Not Covered
  • Scuba diving (over 40 metres) – Not Covered
  • Cave diving – Not Covered
  • Cavern diving (over 40 metres) – Not Covered
  • Free diving - Not Covered

(*) You must be with a professional, qualified and licensed guide or operator

(#) You must have the appropriate qualification, certification or license to participate in this sport, activity or experience

Note: sporting equipment that is checked-in is only covered where the carrier requires it be checked-in due to its size or weight. Always carefully read your PDS so you are clear on what is and isn’t covered under each plan. If you are still unsure about coverage you can contact us.

What's covered?

The right travel insurance can be very helpful in keeping your trip on track. World Nomads offers two policies – Standard and Explorer – that provide coverage when backpacking overseas.

Our plans are designed to provide cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next overseas adventure, such as being left empty-handed when the airline loses your luggage, if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or feeling unwell, if severe weather interrupts your plans, and for many other reasons.

World Nomads may offer cover for the following (up to the policy limits):

  • Cancellation protection: trip cancellations happen from time to time and travel insurance can help when the unexpected forces you to cancel your trip. Depending on what’s happened, we may pay for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses
  • Overseas emergency medical: exploring the world  through a scuba diving lens can be a great experience, but not if it ends in sickness or an injury. Your policy may cover you for your overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us. You can submit a claim to recover unexpected medical expenses while abroad
  • Family cover: it includes overseas medical expenses for up to 12 months after sudden illness or injury. There’s also cover for dental treatment under both Standard and Explorer plans
  • Delayed baggage: It can be a pain, however, if it’s been 12 hours and there’s no sign of your bags yet, insurance will cover you for the cost of some basic replacements such as pyjamas, toothbrush, and shampoo
  • And much more…

Note: Read your PDS for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions and terms and conditions of your coverage.

Travel insurance tip: World Nomads provides travel insurance for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences. While this list might seem exhaustive, it doesn’t cover everything. That’s why you shouldn’t take for granted that your preferred activities will be covered. You can’t upgrade your level of cover mid-way through your holiday, so do consider this wisely.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything so understanding what’s not covered is important. There are several situations we can cover you for, but there are also some we just won’t cover.

These include, but are not limited to:

  • Diving professionally
  • Reckless behaviour while diving or doing any activity or sports
  • Search and rescue expenses
  • Your scuba dive equipment while it is in use
  • Diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • If you don’t keep your gear safe and secure at all times.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g., transport carriers, accommodation providers or other insurance policies

Key tips when going scuba diving:

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’ approval.
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers.
  • When scuba diving with a group, listen to your instructor or dive guide regarding the planned route and what to look out for.
  • Monitor your air gauge and make sure you have enough air left to get back to the boat.
  • Descend and ascend slowly during every dive.
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • Don't fly for at least 24 hours after scuba diving. The aircraft's pressurised environment can trigger decompression sickness if you still have excess nitrogen in your system.
  • Make sure you have the right level of scuba diving travel insurance and that the kind of diving you plan to do is fully covered.

Want to know more?

Our Help Desk article on scuba diving can help you out if you have any further queries on coverage.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel insurance when going scuba diving or snorkelling

Simple and flexible travel insurance to protect you on your next dive trip. Buy at home or while travelling and claim online from anywhere in the world.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Calm waters, crystal clear visibility and a solid dive plan might make for the perfect underwater adventure, but accidents can happen. That’s why adventure and travel insurance should really go hand-in-hand.

Whether you're learning to dive or you’ve enjoyed countless hours beneath the sea, World Nomads travel insurance can help take the pressure off you and your family if the unexpected sinks your next dive trip.

What types of dives are covered?

As passionate divers ourselves, we’ve designed our travel insurance plans to cover dives from the Great Blue Hole to The Yongala, and we can offer coverage for:

  • Recreational scuba diving, including cavern diving, up to 30 metres.
  • Recreational scuba diving, including cavern diving, up to 40 metres, with payment of an additional premium.
  • Discover or “learn to dive” scuba dives with a qualified instructor.
  • Scuba diving as a paid or volunteer instructor or guide, with the payment of an additional premium.
  • Shark cage diving (non-qualified at surface or qualified to scuba dive to 30 metres).

Special conditions and exclusions may apply. Divers must hold a valid SCUBA diving certification (PADI, SSI or BSAC or equivalent) and follow the relevant association rules and guidelines at all times. Learners must only dive under the constant supervision of a properly licensed diving school and follow their rules and instructions at all times.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer - each with different levels of coverage. When you get a quote, you can compare the plans side by side and decide which has the right level of coverage to meet your needs.

When you buy your travel insurance policy, you will need to list the activities you plan to participate in while travelling. Level 1 activities—such as scuba diving up to 30 metres—are automatically covered. Level 2 and Level 3 activities—like diving up to 40 metres —require an additional premium.

Coverage for your scuba diving gear

Both World Nomads plans include cover if your baggage and gear becomes delayed or lost by your common carrier, or stolen subject to the limits outlined in your policy. All coverage is secondary to the coverage provided by your airline or other common carrier. Be sure to check the per item and overall limits when you compare coverage (the Explorer plan offers higher limits and sub limits of coverage).

Baggage delay coverage can help if your airline or other common carrier loses your bags en route to your trip for more than 12 hours, by providing reimbursement for the essentials you need to tide you over until you are reunited with your bag.

If your gear is delayed, lost or damaged, you must report the incident as soon as possible to a responsible officer for the carrier. Make sure you get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier before making a claim with us. In the event of theft, burglary or robbery, you must obtain written documented evidence (i.e. a police report) from the police immediately or as soon as reasonably possible and a written confirmation of the loss from the hotel manager, tour guide or transportation authority.

Cover for medical emergencies

Your health and safety are a priority when you’re exploring the ocean, which is why our plans cover emergency medical expenses  should you become sick, get into an accident or get hurt whilst diving or snorkeling. Emergency medical travel insurance may be able to cover you for emergency evacuation and unforeseen travel costs incurred due to a medical emergency, while also providing emergency assistance services.

To be eligible for maximum emergency medical benefits you must be covered under your Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the full duration of your policy. If you do not have GHIP coverage while you are travelling, emergency medical benefits will be limited to $40,000 CAD for the duration of your trip.

Coverage for medical evacuation

You might be on a reef far from medical assistance on your dive, and our policies include coverage  if you need emergency evacuation to a medical facility.

Emergency assistance 24/7

Having an emergency in a foreign country or another province can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can facilitate a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re travelling, can speak multiple languages and they’re available 365 days a year.

Scuba diving: Whats not covered

While we can offer coverage for a lot of scuba diving events, there are some things we don’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any scuba dive, including cavern diving, that takes you deeper than your current qualification limits, or any dive deeper than 40 metres.
  • Any unaccompanied or solo dive, commercial scuba diving or cave diving.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government of Canada "Do Not Travel” warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to Canada.

Handy tips for safe scuba diving:

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers.
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • When scuba diving with a group, listen to your instructor or dive guide regarding the planned route and what to look out for

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for scuba diving. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What if the airline damages my gear
If your diving gear is damaged by the airline, World Nomads may provide coverage for the cost to replace it. You’ll need to claim with your airline first, then provide the airline’s benefits report when you claim with us to make up the difference, up to the policy limits.
  • Does my travel insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
It will depend on the situation at the time of the medical emergency. If you require hospitalization and/or medical evacuation our emergency assistance team will work directly with the hospital and evacuation services on your behalf. They may be able to arrange direct payment with the medical provider. However, if the treatment you receive is from an urgent care facility or walk-in clinic, you most likely will have to pay out of pocket and claim for reimbursement.

If your baggage or scuba diving gear is delayed, lost and/or damaged while checked in with a common carrier, you may be able to claim for reimbursement up to a per item and total maximum limit. Terms and conditions apply so be sure to check the policy wording and contact us if you have any questions.

If your gear is delayed, lost or damaged, you must report the incident as soon as possible to a responsible officer for the carrier. Make sure you get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier first before making a claim with us.

Please note we do not offer coverage for damage to sporting equipment while in use.

Coverage for medical emergencies

Your health and safety are a priority when you’re exploring the ocean, which is why our plans cover emergency medical expenses should you become sick, get into an accident or get hurt whilst diving or snorkeling.

Coverage for emergency medical evacuation

You might be on a reef far from medical assistance on your dive, and our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility. An emergency evacuation must be ordered by a physician who certifies that the severity of your accidental injury or sickness warrants your emergency evacuation.

24/7 emergency assistance

Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy gives you access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. They can facilitate a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re traveling, can speak multiple languages and they’re available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Scuba diving: What’s not covered

While we’d like to, we can’t cover everything. Things we don’t cover include, but are not limited to:

  • If you travel against medical advice.
  • Diving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Participation as an athlete in any professional sports.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Diving to depths deeper than those listed above.

Handy tips for safe scuba diving:

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may want to consult your doctor before going scuba diving
