Travelling with the family comes with a different set of challenges to those faced when you're backpacking in your early twenties.
World Nomads is here to support Australian families when the unexpected happens. Here's how our travel insurance plans can help.
Our plans define a dependent as:
Note: age limits for dependents as outlined will vary depending on your country of residence. Always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) so you know what you are and are not covered for.
When applying for a policy there must be at least one adult insured on the policy, and at least one of the insured adults on the policy must be the legal guardian of the dependent(s).
If a dependent isn’t travelling with their legal guardian they may need their own policy, depending on their country of residence. Read the PDS carefully to choose the right plan and level of cover for everyone who is traveling with you. Your policy may have terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.
Did you know: You can add your children and grandchildren to our policies at no extra cost? Only adults are charged. It's just one of the ways we look after families on their travels.
World Nomads is dedicated to assisting Australian families by:
Travel insurance tip: If you buy a policy while traveling overseas, you must wait 72 hours before any cover is activated (except for emergency medical as a result of a sudden accident which is witnessed and verified by an independent third party).

How it works
Before you change your plans, you must contact your travel providers to try to minimise your expenses and request any refunds or rescheduling assistance. You may resume your trip under the same policy up until it’s end date (with pre-approval of trip resumption costs first).
You can make a claim online for your additional expenses. You’ll also need a written medical diagnosis from the attending physician and, if applicable, the death certificate to support your claim. Also be aware that any claim submitted will have the policy excess applied.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
It depends on the specific policy terms. Please review the PDS or contact customer service for guidance on coverage for your child’s condition.

Travel Insurance for natural catastrophes covers you for when Mother Nature decides it’s time to be heard. From Bali’s volcanic eruptions to Japan’s tsunamis and Caribbean cyclones, natural catastrophes are by nature unpredictable and can severely disrupt your travel plans.
You may consider purchasing our Explorer Plan, which offers a benefit to help you move to a safer area when a natural catastrophe strikes.
While the last thing we want to do is to talk about all the nasty weather that could come your way, it’s important for you to know what we define as a ‘natural catastrophe’ in our policy. The following are considered a natural catastrophe: Hurricane, tornado, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, storm, flood, landslide, avalanche, fire, high water or explosion.
Natural catastrophes not only cause physical harm, they also shut down airports, wipe out accommodation, and cancel trips.
While some natural catastrophes are completely unpredictable, a lot of them - think hurricanes, monsoons, and even volcanic eruptions (we're looking at you, Indonesia) often give off enough warning for you to prepare yourself so you're not caught off guard.
For those policies that do offer cover for natural catastrophes, you'll need to have bought a policy before the event is known and do everything you can to keep your expenses to a minimum.
It's a good idea to read through the Policy Wording before you purchase a plan. If you need help deciding how much coverage you need, you can read our article Standard vs. Explorer. It’s not the end of the world if you find that your policy isn’t the right match. You have the right to cancel your travel insurance within the cooling-off period. Log into your membership to do so. Also, check your policy to see how long your cooling-off period is.
The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.
Travel Insurance Tip: If you’re traveling to a region that’s known for natural disasters, it's a good idea to do some research to see if there have been any warnings. If you buy a policy after an event is known, and the natural disaster impacts your trip, you won’t be covered for any expenses.
On the night 25/10/2010 I was on the surf charter boat, in the Mentawai Islands, Sumatra, Indonesia. There was an earthquake and tsunami that hit and completely destroyed the boat. The boat caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and we had to abandon ship. The boat along with all personal belongs were completely destroyed. The fire spread so quickly that there was no time to collect any belongings. The only things I ended up with were the shorts I was wearing, my watch and wedding ring. Almost all my possessions and documentation were on the boat and destroyed.

My symptoms were intense headaches, high fever (39.7 degrees C by the time I reached the hospital in Kutchan on the 18th), nausea & vomiting, loss of appetite & energy, and diarrhoea. Although I'd initially thought it to be a common cold or stomach bug, it because progressively worse, until I was forced to visit the Kutchan hospital, (the nearest medical facilities with an English interpreter). After a thorough examination, they put me on a saline drip and took multiple blood samples to try to work out what was wrong. However, they were not able to confirm this, telling me that it could be influenza, acute gastroenteritis, or one of a host of other viruses.
