Cheap Travel Insurance is only good if it protects you for those emergencies it’s supposed to protect you for.
Going too cheap can mean you’re not covered when it matters and if you’re not covered… your trip of a lifetime can get very expensive, very fast.
That’s why at World Nomads we listened to our experienced travellers and designed designed simple and flexible travel insurance policy options to match their high expectations, at an affordable price (but not the cheapest).
All policies include a number of benefits that our travellers may need, these include:
As no two travellers are alike, we’ve designed a Standard and Explorer travel insurance option so you can choose whether you pay for the extras or not.
If you’re planning to kayak the Amazon solo or throw yourself out of a plane with just a little bit of silk attached to your back, the Explorer option may be more suited to you.
Then again, you might be surprised by what is covered under the Standard travel insurance option. Just tell us who you are, where you’re going and how long you’ll be gone for and we’ll generate your instant quote with all the detail you need.
And if you’re not sure you can start with the Standard and upgrade your travel insurance at any time, even if you’re already on the road. Check your policy for the coverage start date and time.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We know we’re not the cheapest, but with us you can travel with confidence, knowing you’ve got 24/7 traveller support, insider information to help you plan your trip and coverage for all the important events you’re likely to encounter.
During cycle tour of Malaysia I fell off my bike and sustained abrasions and an undisplaced fracture of the surgical neck of my left humerus. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but a private vehicle stopped and transported us to the nearest town (Gua Musang). Gua Musang Hospital (a public hospital) diagnosed and treated the injuries. I advised WN of the incident the following day. Following the injury we had to arrange alternative transport(train) to Kuala Lumpur and cancel the remainder of our cycle tour, including ferries booked in Australia that had a non-refundable portion.

Fell over whilst snowboarding in a lesson. Hit my head and got concussion.. went to Ski patrol and was told that if it didn't clear up I should go to hospital. 2 days later I was still feeling sick and unable to snowboard, went back to ski patrol and they recommended that I go to hospital for a check up.

As featured in:
Recent world events have shocked most of us with terrorist events on our doorstep and at many of our favourite holiday destinations.
Our travellers know that staying aware at all times is key to staying safe, but there are some things you can never anticipate and a terrorist event is one of those.
In the event of a terrorist attack, our travel insurance (Explorer Plan only) covers a number of situations like:
Our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team can help you navigate next steps if you’re caught up in the chaos and aftermath of an attack and are trying to continue your trip.
Terrorist attacks are understandably traumatic. If you’re worried one might occur, or following an attack you want to travel elsewhere or go home, we consider that to be a change of mind and we won’t cover you for those costs. There are some exceptions to this as mentioned above.
In addition, our policy does not cover:
You must also remember that if you knowingly put yourself in danger you may void your travel insurance. This means if there’s a warning of a terrorist attack or you were likely to have had knowledge there might be one, and you put yourself at risk by traveling to or staying in the vicinity of that area, then your cover may be void.
The policy wording contains all conditions, exclusions and limitations to cover, so please read it carefully before you buy.
It’s essential you contact our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance teams as soon as you are aware you will be admitted as an inpatient for at least one night so we can support you from the time you get injured until the time you get home.
So our teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:
After the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13 and subsequent raids in St. Denis on November 18, we decided to cancel our trip until a better time to travel with our children overseas.

We’ve all been there: landing in your dream destination, only to find out your bag’s gone on its own holiday. Travel mishaps like lost or stolen baggage can turn an epic adventure into a logistical nightmare. World Nomads travel insurance not only protects your gear; it protects your plans— because a lost bag shouldn’t stand in the way of your next great story.
World Nomads keeps it simple for our UK travellers with two insurance plans: Standard and Explorer. Both offer coverage for stolen, delayed, and damaged luggage, but the Explorer Plan has higher limits and offers additional coverage for the accidental loss or theft of cash (provided you’ve stowed it safely).
Your policy will have very specific limits on the total value of the luggage covered and on individual items. If some items you bring exceed those limits, you might want to specify high-value items when you purchase your policy. It'll cost you more, but it may be worth it if you have to make a claim.
Our policies can cover you if your gear is:
There are, of course, conditions on how cover applies. For example, we won't cover your electronics or jewellery if they are part of checked-in luggage. Read through the policy wording so there are no surprises.
Our Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) policy offers unmatched flexibility for UK travellers with a serious case of wanderlust. Whether hopping to France for a weekend or jetting off to Southeast Asia for a few weeks, AMT covers your baggage and personal belongings on each trip—without the hassle of buying a new policy every time you travel.
When you’re exploring far from home, having emergency medical coverage can be a lifesaver—literally. For digital nomads and frequent travellers, unexpected health issues can turn your plans upside down. That’s why World Nomads provides 24/7 emergency medical assistance so UK travellers can get immediate help when needed.
Nobody likes a delayed flight—especially when you’re stuck between connections at a bustling airport. With World Nomads’ Smart Delay feature, UK travellers get extra support if their flights or connections are held up beyond a specific time. Think of it as a travel buffer: Smart Delay helps cover essentials like food and refreshments, so you’re not left out of pocket while waiting for things to get back on track.
No one wants to lose their belongings; it’s frustrating and heartbreaking. If someone nicks your gear, it’s imperative you get on the front foot…fast. Here are some steps you should take right away:

My wife and I were travelling through South America. We had just arrived in the main bus station in Arequipa, Peru at approximately 7pm, after travelling overnight from the north of Chile. We sat down on the public seating at the bus station whilst waiting for a friend to book an onward ticket. I was sat on the end of the isle of seats with my day bag by the side of my feet. A child of about the age of 9 years came up to us from the opposite direction and spoke to us in Spanish. We both looked at her whilst trying to understand what she said. After decyphering that she wanted to sing us a song and subsequently declining her offer, she wandered off. At this point I looked down at my bags to discover that my day bag had gone. We obviously immediately looked around, could not see the bag anywhere. We asked the other people sat around if they had seen anything, but no one had. The little girl was nowhere to be seen. As we had been on the go for over 24 hours and were extremely tired and now extremely upset, we left and checked into a hostel. The next morning we lodged a report with the tourist police who informed us that there had been a police counter at the station. At the time though it had not even occurred to me that we could make a report at the station itself. After 3 months of travelling through South America with not a single problem and with only 5 days left until flying home this has not been the most pleasant way to finish our holiday!

UK residents claim online while travelling or when returning home. We encourage you to submit your claim at your earliest convenience or within 60 days from the date of loss. Plus, submitting your claim as soon as possible means less of a chance you’ll misplace your receipts or other required documentation.
You can still file a claim. However, the item might depreciate, or we may be unable to process your claim without additional information. We require receipts if you are trying to claim reimbursement for purchases made because of a baggage delay. For more information, check out our article. At World Nomads, we believe that having an existing medical condition shouldn't prevent Australians from exploring the world. Whether you're surfing in Bali, road-tripping through New Zealand, or indulging in the culinary delights of Paris, it's crucial to understand how your health status impacts your travel insurance.
This guide will help you navigate coverage options for existing medical conditions.
An existing medical condition is any medical condition which you've had at the time you buy a travel insurance policy with World Nomads. It includes conditions that are:
World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans—Standard and Explorer—both of which automatically cover over 40 common existing medical conditions if you meet the specific coverage criteria. You can find the complete list in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Asthma: Covered if you're under 60, haven’t been hospitalized for it in the past two years, and don’t have other respiratory conditions.
Diabetes (Type I & II): Covered if diagnosed more than six months ago, blood sugar levels are stable, there have been no recent complications, and no cardiovascular disease.
Migraines: Covered if you haven’t been hospitalized for them in the last two years.
Epilepsy: Covered if there have been no recent hospitalizations, no medication changes, and no underlying conditions.
Pro Tip: Before buying travel insurance, thoroughly review the criteria for existing medical condition coverage to avoid unexpected expenses.
While travel insurance provides essential protection, it does not cover every medical situation. Exclusions include:
Note: If you purchase insurance after leaving Australia, a 72-hour waiting period applies. Any illness or injury occurring within this period may be classified as an existing medical condition for the duration of your policy.
To travel safely and confidently, follow these expert recommendations:
When you get a travel insurance quote, you’ll be able to compare the coverage of each plan so you may determine the best travel insurance plan for your needs. If you’re unclear about anything at all, get in touch with us, and we’ll help explain it all.
The features and benefits described are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure
Statement (PDS).
You should read the PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

An existing medical condition is any health issue you’ve experienced before buying your travel insurance policy with World Nomads.
Specifically, it includes conditions that are:
Depending on your Country of Residence, our policies may not always cover pre-existing medical conditions, so it's important to double-check the specifics in your policy information.
However, in most instances, even if your pre-existing condition isn't covered, you may still be covered for other unexpected travel mishaps—as long as they're not related to that pre-existing condition. This includes cover for, and not limited to, the following:
Our policy may also cover cancellation if, after you purchase it and before you start your trip, you, or someone whose health your trip depends on suffers a serious illness or injury.
Traveller's tip: do your homework and identify any pre-existing condition coverage before purchasing travel insurance. You don’t want to get sick overseas and realise you’re not covered. Check the criteria for pre-existing conditions carefully, and contact us for clarification if you have any doubts. We’re always happy to help.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything—especially regarding pre-existing illnesses. World Nomads won’t cover:
Note: if you purchased cover after you left home, there’s a waiting period of 72 hours before the insurance takes effect. Any illness or injury occurring during this waiting period may be considered a pre-existing medical condition for the remaining period of your insurance. Please note that cover is dependent on your Country of Residence.

In some instances, World Nomads may offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions automatically. If you don’t meet the criteria for automatically covered pre-existing medical conditions, you can still purchase a policy, but you won’t be covered for any claims that arise from the pre-existing medical condition.
I realized I had forgotten a medication (clonazepam) which I take for insomnia. I visited a doctor in Mexico City the next day and got a prescription for the medication. However, he also diagnosed me with a condition that I was not aware of (hyperthyroid) and suggested that the medication would help with the condition on a short-term basis. He suggested that I get a blood test for hyperthyroid, which I just did in Boston.

We do not offer a policy under the following circumstances:
Having a pre-existing medical condition isn't a reason to stop travelling, but it can affect your travel insurance and what you’re covered for. Whether you're travelling off the grid or blogging in it, it's best to know if we can cover your pre-existing medical condition before your travel, so you're not caught unaware.
A pre-existing medical condition is any medical or dental condition, or related complication that has required or is awaiting medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, prescribed medication, consultations, check-ups, surgery, tests or investigations in the 180 days before you buy or extend your policy or book your trip (whichever you do last).
It’s important that you read your policy wording and its specific definition of 'pre-existing medical condition' and determine if the cover offered will meet your needs.
In addition, if you took out cover after you left home, there is a waiting period of 72 hours before the insurance takes effect. Any illness or injury that occurs before or during this waiting period may be considered a pre-existing medical condition for the remaining period of your insurance.
If you have a change in health after policy purchase, you will need to provide medical confirmation from your General Practitioner that you were fit to travel, should you later need to claim.
Our policies do not cover pre-existing medical conditions, but they still offer cover for many events that can take place while on the road, as long as the event is not as a result of the pre-existing medical condition(s). This includes cover for:
Our policies may also cover your cancellation expenses if, after you’ve purchased the policy and before you've started your trip, you or someone else on whom your trip depends suffers a serious illness or injury which is not a pre-existing medical condition.
It can be if hospital admission is required.

Natural disasters not only cause physical harm, they also shut down airports, wipe out accommodation, and cancel trips.
While some natural disasters are completely unpredictable, a lot of them think hurricanes, monsoons, and even volcanic eruptions often give off enough warning for you to prepare yourself so you're not caught unaware.
We consider a natural disaster the following: flood, cyclone, tornado, hurricane, typhoon, wild fire, tsunami, earthquake, landslide, avalanche, volcanic eruption. ‘Natural disaster’ does not include outbreak of disease, epidemic, pandemic, or any other event that is not specifically included in this definition.
For those policies that do cover natural disaster in one way or another, you'll need to have bought a policy before the event is known and do everything you can to minimise your expenses.
If your destination is impacted by a natural catastrophe then you must contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team so we are advised of the situation. If you do not comply with this condition it may impact what we pay you for your claim.
Not all of our policies cover natural disaster in the same way, and some of them exclude it altogether. If you look through the following table, you'll be able to see how the policy works for your Country of Residence.

Travel Insurance for natural catastrophes covers you for when Mother Nature decides it’s time to be heard. From Bali’s volcanic eruptions to Japan’s tsunamis and Caribbean cyclones, natural catastrophes are by nature unpredictable and can severely disrupt your travel plans.
Consider purchasing our Explorer Plan, which offers a benefit to help you move to a safer area when a natural catastrophe strikes.
While the last thing we want to do is to talk about all the nasty weather that could come your way, it’s important for you to know what we define as a ‘natural catastrophe’ in our policy. The following are considered a natural catastrophe: Hurricane, tornado, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, storm, flood, landslide, avalanche, fire, high water or explosion.
Travel Insurance Tip: Please be sure to read your policy carefully as epidemics/pandemics are not considered a natural catastrophe in our policy coverage. If you’re looking for information on our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article which includes the terms, benefits and exclusions.
If you’re caught up in a natural catastrophe and purchased the Explorer Plan, the Natural Catastrophe section may cover the reasonable cost of additional accommodation and transport during your trip for one of the following situations:
With the Explorer Plan, you may also have your evacuation expenses covered in the event that a Travel Advisory is issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, or a similar body in the circumstances, recommending evacuation from the country or specific area in which you are travelling.
If your destination is impacted by a natural catastrophe then you must contact our Emergency Assistance team so we are advised of the situation. If you do not comply with this condition it may impact what we pay you for your claim.
There are a number of circumstances where we will not cover you following a natural catastrophe. These include:
