For travellers who revel in ultimate freedom — to roam with the flexibility of a one way ticket.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

A one way ticket offers the ultimate freedom. To travel to a destination with an open mind and open plans about when—and if—you’ll return home in the foreseeable future.

As travellers ourselves, we understand the allure of not committing to an end date for your travels. That’s why World Nomads offers cover for one way travel insurance. Because travel is about going forth into the unknown.

What’s covered with one way travel insurance

When you buy travel insurance with World Nomads—whether you’re travelling on a one way ticket or not—the policy covers some of travel’s most common mishaps, including:

  • Trip delay, interruption, and flight delays
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas emergency medical
  • Hospitalisation if you or a member of your travelling party get injured or fall ill
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage and valuables cover
  • Snow sports optional cover
  • Adventure activities and sports cover (we offer cover for more than 150 activities)
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation when necessary
  • And much more.

A World Nomads travel insurance policy also provides access to the experienced 24/7 Emergency Assistance team who are there to help you find a doctor if you or a member of your travel party become sick or injured.

What you need to know if you plan to travel on a one way ticket

The beauty of single trip cover is you can explore a country or multiple countries for as long as you choose. But there is one defining difference compared to if you buy travel insurance for a return trip: your flight home (since it’s non-existent at the time of purchase) isn’t covered.

If you find yourself needing to return home for a covered reason, the cost you would have normally paid for an Economy Class airfare (at the carrier’s regular rate or actual cost incurred) will be deducted from your total claim.

What’s not covered when you travel one way

Overseas travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything and there are some things we simply don’t cover for one way travel, including:

  • Your flight home
  • Cancelation expenses if you simply change your mind and decide not to travel
  • If you become injured while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Treatment for a condition, illness, or injury that is considered a non-emergency and can wait until your return home
  • Existing medical conditions

It’s always a good idea to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully and check the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions when you buy travel insurance (or anything else for that matter!) so you have a good understanding of what is and isn’t covered for one way travel insurance.

Handy travel tips for one way trips

Select the plan that’s right for your one way trip

We offer two levels of cover, Standard and Explorer. Each plan comes with different benefit limits, different limits and sub limits. Take the time to consider which is the best option for your travel plans, so you clearly understand what’s included in the level of cover you select for your one way trip.

Working holidays

Many travellers who buy one way travel insurance are planning to move to another country for a working holiday for the foreseeable future. Our single trip cover is designed to cover you for up to 12 months whether that means a gap year in Canada or a months-long backpacking trip across Europe.

And if you’re nearing the end-date of your trip and decide to extend your stay, you should consider extending your travel insurance too.

Buy while abroad

Already left? With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance even after you’ve left home. Get a quick quote and easily buy while abroad. If you buy travel insurance during your overseas holiday, you are still subject to a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this period.

Need to know more?

The World Nomads team is here to help 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Get in touch if you’re unsure what your next step should be and we can help get you there, whether that means deciding which policy is best for your trip, how to buy while abroad, or how to make a claim.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the Product Disclosure Statement. You should read your PDS in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Kidney Stone in Bali

On Saturday 9 August 2014 I incurred acute pain and vomiting all night long. I went to Siloam Hospitals Bali due to the acute pain and non-eating. I was hospitalised immediately. X-rays and ultrasound found a kidney stone and infection. I was hospitalised for 5-6 days where I was medicated and had tests accordingly. I had a procedure to break up the kidney stone as it would not dislodge. I was released from hospital to convalesce at home

What’s not covered on holiday travel insurance?

  • If you do something illegal
  • Where you've been acting in a reckless manner
  • If you’re intoxicated as a result of taking drugs or alcohol
  • Any costs associated with a sexually transmitted disease (except where contracted through an assault)

Stolen Bag.

In the city of Jaén (Peru), 2 people stole my backpack with a motorbike. The bag was at my feet as I was waiting for my girlfriend to come back from the hotel as we were looking for one place to stay (we just arrived). One guy took the bag and as I realised it I ran after him to get my bag. He jumped into a local motorbike (awaiting next to him with 3 seats behind) with my bag. I ran after him, jumped into the motorbike and began to fight ... unfortunately, he kicked me out and the 2 (the driver and the guy who took my bag) drove away with my stuff.

Protect your loved ones on holiday

Travelling with your family is a whole different ball game. While you may have once pushed boundaries on your own, you now have loved ones in tow. That’s where World Nomads Travel Insurance comes in, we are here to support New Zealand families when unexpected events occur.

Dependents eligible for cover

With World Nomads travel insurance cover, a dependent is:

  • Child(ren) or grandchild(ren), or others for whom you are the legal guardian and,
  • Who are not in full time employment and,
  • Are 20 years old or younger at the Policy Issue Date and,
  • Are travelling with you on your trip and are listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

Note: age limits for dependents as outlined above will vary depending on your country of residence. Always read the Policy Document so you know what you are and are not covered for.

When applying for a policy there must be at least one adult insured on the policy, and at least one of the insured adults on the policy must be the legal guardian of the dependent(s).

If a dependent is not travelling with their legal guardian they may need their own policy, depending on your country of residence. Read the Policy Document carefully to choose the right plan and level of cover for everyone who is travelling with you. Your policy may have terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions.

Did you know: You can add your children and grandchildren to our policies at no extra cost? Only adults are charged. It’s just one of the ways we look after families on their travels.

How could World Nomads family travel insurance help?

World Nomads is dedicated to assisting New Zealand families with:

  • 24/7 emergency assistance: Quickly locate local medical services and hospital care if needed.
  • Cover for 220+ adventure activities: Enjoy your holiday knowing that many common travel activity related injuries and related incidents are covered.
  • Overseas medical: Protection for overseas medical emergencies including access to hospitals and dental.
  •  Trip cancellations: If you need to cancel your trip we may help cover some costs.
  • Baggage and high-value items cover: if your baggage or items are stolen, lost or damaged you may be covered, including benefits if your bags are delayed and you need to purchase emergency clothes and toiletries.
  • Coverage for extended stays: if you’re having too much fun and want to extend your family holiday, your plan can be extended while still traveling for up to 12 months from your departure date (terms and conditions apply). You can extend your policy as long as it’s done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

Travel insurance tip: If you buy a policy while traveling overseas, you must wait 72 hours before any cover is activated (except for emergency medical as a result of a sudden accident which is witnessed and verified by an independent third party).

Get travel advice through our Travel Wiser content, FAQs, guides, safety information, and travel alerts.

To avoid any surprises when making a claim, it’s a smart idea to become familiar with the various limits, benefits, available upgrades, terms and conditions before you buy a policy.

What’s not covered by our plans

Be sure to review your policy carefully, as there are exclusions, such as:

  • Cancellation for change of mind: Expenses incurred if you simply change your mind are not covered.
  • Illegal activities: Any costs related to unlawful actions are excluded.
  • Non-emergency treatments: Routine treatments that can wait until your return are not covered (this is for travel emergencies only).
  • Certain existing medical conditions: Some conditions may not be covered as specified in your policy.

Tips for New Zealand families planning a trip abroad

  • Prepare in advance: Research and purchase your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday to maximize coverage benefits. Give yourself plenty of time to get to airports, get through security and board transport. Keep your schedule loose and flexible.
  • Read the fine print: Ensure you fully understand the policy exclusions, especially concerning existing medical conditions and non-emergency treatments.
  • Prepare documentation: Keep copies of important documents, such as medical records, passports, birth certificates, and travel itineraries. Always check visa requirements of your intended destination(s) – some countries require you to have at least 6 months validity on your passport.
  • Emergency planning: Familiarize yourself with local emergency services at your destination and share your travel plans with a trusted contact back home. Take relevant medical information with you and keep it handy.
  • Budget for unexpected costs: Consider setting aside extra funds for emergencies, even if you’re covered by insurance.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for families. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

  • What is considered a close relative?
A close relative is defined by us as your spouse/de facto partner, fiancé, fiancée, parent, parent-in-law, daughter, son, adopted or de facto daughter or son, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, nephew, grandchild, grandparent, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter or guardian.
  • Am I covered if I need to cancel my trip because a relative is sick/injured?

If a close relative is suddenly hospitalised or dies from a sudden illness or serious injury, then your travel insurance policy can help if you have to cancel or re-arrange your trip.

If you have to cancel or rearrange your trip, there may be cover for:

    • The non-refundable portion of your travel expenses, including transport, accommodation, tours/experiences, tuition/course fees, travel agency cancellation fees and frequent flyer points.
    • Your reasonable and necessary additional transport and accommodation expenses to return home early to visit your family, including:
      • the costs incurred to change your flights to an earlier date; and
      • The costs of itemised phone calls and internet expenses incurred when contacting us or your travel provider to rearrange, resume, catch up to or end your original travel plans.
    • Costs incurred to re-arrange your travel plans so you can resume your trip after your visit home.

    How it works

Before you change your plans, you must contact your travel providers to try to minimise your expenses and request any refunds or rescheduling assistance. You may resume your trip under the same policy up until it’s end date (with pre-approval of trip resumption costs first).

You can make a claim online for your additional expenses. You’ll also need a written medical diagnosis from the attending physician and, if applicable, the death certificate to support your claim. Also be aware that any claim submitted will have the policy excess applied.

  • How do I buy travel insurance for the family?

Go online and enter a few details about yourself, your destinations, and the ages of all your family members. We will generate an instant quote with both Standard and Explorer plan options, and you can pick which one suits your specific needs. Once you’ve selected the right level of cover and paid, you will get instant confirmation of your family travel insurance to your selected email.

Travel insurance for expats

World Nomads was founded by, and is operated by, people who have lived and worked overseas. We know that one of the best things about being an expat is the opportunity to explore neighboring countries and places.

1) Flexible travel insurance

We know it’s not easy finding travel insurance when you’re not living in your home country, so have designed our travel insurance to be flexible, so you can purchase it for as long, or as little, as you need.

2) Accessible online travel insurance even after you’ve left home

Our travel insurance is available to most nationalities living or travelling outside of their Country of Residence. You can purchase online using a credit card as you don’t have to be in your country of residence to purchase it; however there are some exceptions to this, so please check the policy before purchasing.

3) Many of the essentials you may need, and more.

World Nomads designed its travel insurance around what our travellers most often claim for and tell us they want. In addition we cover more than 200 activities, sports, and experiences.

Stolen Card in Venice Beach.

I had my passport and credit cards stolen from my bag while staying in Venice Beach, California. This is the beginning of my trip which I had prebooked and organised flights and tours from LA to other parts of America. I have missed my flight to Las Vegas from SanFrancisco and my flight from Las Vegas to Seattle. I also had to cancel accommodation in Las Vegas and San Francisco. This is due to the fact that the earliest time for me to get a replacement temporary passport and cards is too late.

Moped Accident in Koh Tao.

I was injured in Koh Tao, Thailand in a moped accident. The moped turned over onto my foot and a sprained/injured ligaments and tendons in my left foot. I am unable to walk on my foot at all. The doctor gave me a foot in lieu of a cast, and crutches stating that I could not bear any weight on my foot for a minimum of 3 weeks. FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas travel accidents. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Does my insurance pay for my accident upfront or do I have to pay and claim?
Who pays depends on what’s happened! If it’s an emergency situation where hospital admission and/or medical evacuation is required, the insurer may cover these costs upfront (provided the incident is covered as per the policy wording, of course). This is decided on case by case and requires pre-approval first.

Travel Insurance for Overseas Accidents

Stay protected with emergency medical and evacuation coverage in case of an accident during your travels

Adventure’s calling…what’s it gonna be? Snowboarding in the Swiss Alps or scuba diving off the Canary Islands? Remember, with adventure comes the possibility of misadventure, and even the best planned trips can hit a snag when accidents occur. World Nomads offers UK travellers insurance options for those ‘just in case’ moments.

What is covered if I have a travel accident?

World Nomads offers two insurance plans: Standard and Explorer. Both plans cover medical expenses for accidents overseas, but the Explorer Plan has higher limits.

Here are some of the ways we could help UK policyholders if they have an accident while travelling:

Hospital stays: whether it’s a sprained ankle from a trek in Peru, or a case of Bali Belly, World Nomads can cover inpatient care, including emergency treatment, surgeries, and necessary overnight stays.

Out-patient surgeries: if an accident leaves you needing a quick procedure, you could be covered—minus the lengthy hospital stay.

Prescribed medications: need antibiotics after a run-in with an overzealous jellyfish while scuba diving in The Maldives? We may be able to cover the bill for that.

Medical evacuation and repatriation: sometimes, the thrill of exploring new places comes with unexpected risks. If a severe medical emergency happens while you’re overseas, we’ll help you get the care you need—no matter where that may be. World Nomads covers medical evacuations, including air ambulance transport if required, so you can get to the nearest suitable medical facility or back home with the support you need.

And while we hope you never need it, we also cover the repatriation of remains in the event of the unthinkable, easing the burden on your loved ones during difficult times.

Accidental death and dismemberment: if you get seriously hurt during your trip– and lose your sight, a limb, or even your life – you (or a designated beneficiary) can get compensated for the loss, up to the maximum benefit amount specified in your plan.

Note: the loss must have occurred within 365 days of the accident to receive benefits.

Additional Benefits for UK Travelers

Adventure and Activity Cover: 150+ Activities

Our UK policyholders love a good thrill, and we’re all for it—that’s why we offer cover for over 150 activities and sports. Got a hankering for barefoot waterskiing? Lake Como’s glassy waters in Italy are perfect for it—and yes, if you get a little wobbly and twist an ankle, we’ve got you covered (not that we wish that on anyone!).

Air Doctor: Medical Help When You Don’t Need a Hospital

For non-urgent issues, World Nomads also offers access to Air Doctor. So, if you’re exploring the Australian Outback or visiting remote villages in South America, you can connect with a doctor virtually or find one nearby. Air Doctor makes it easy to get advice, prescription refills, or minor treatments without navigating an unfamiliar healthcare system—perfect for handling those minor bumps in the road so you can get back to the adventure.

Worldwide 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance

When exploring the world, the last thing you want to worry about is what to do in a medical emergency. That’s where our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team steps in. Available around the clock, our team is here to help connect you to local medical providers, coordinate your care, and ensure you’re supported at every step.

What should I do if I have an accident while overseas?

  1. First, make sure you’re safe and out of immediate danger. Take a deep breath and evaluate any injuries or risks around you.
  2. Call our Emergency Medical Assistance Team immediately. They’re available around the clock to guide you through what to do next and can help connect you to local medical services if needed.
  3. When you call, be ready to share the following details:

- Your location: give as much information as possible about where you are, including any landmarks if you’re in a remote area.

- Nature of the emergency: describe what happened and the extent of your injuries or illness.

- Your policy number: have your World Nomads policy number handy to speed up assistance.

  1. Pre-authorisation may be required for more extensive medical expenses like surgeries or extended hospital stays. Our team will help you arrange this to ensure you’re covered, and they’ll handle direct payments to the medical provider when necessary.
  2. Keep in touch with our Emergency Medical Assistance team until you no longer require treatment or assistance.
  3. If you need to make a claim, you can do it online through your World Nomads account. It’s simple and convenient, so you can focus on getting back on your feet.

Heads-up: this travel insurance covers you over and above any state health insurance or reciprocal health agreements, like your GHIC or EHIC. If you're heading to the EEA or Switzerland, remember to bring a valid GHIC (or EHIC if you still have one) for access to state healthcare at reduced or no cost. And when your EHIC expires, just switch over to a GHIC to keep those benefits rolling.

What’s not covered if I have an accident whilst travelling?

  • If an accident happens after too many Coronas, we won’t cover you.
  • Acting a fool and breaking the law? We won’t cover that.
  • If you decide to push the limits of your policy inclusions, you’re on your own.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • If you ride a motorbike without a helmet, the correct licence, or a valid CBT certificate (DL196).

This is not a complete list of what's covered and not covered. Some limits and conditions apply, so for more information, check out our articles on overseas medical coverage and adventure sports coverage, and read your policy carefully before you buy. Contact us if you’re still not sure.

Mountain Biking Accident.

I was riding my mountain bike when I hit something and went over my handle bars. I put both hands out and broke my wrists and knocked myself out. I woke up in an ambulance and then went to Whistler Health Care Centre where I had x rays and further treatment.
