Travel Insurance for Trip Interruption

The world is your oyster… until an unexpected event interrupts your trip.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

They say even the best laid plans have a way of veering off course. And, as all seasoned travelers know, trip interruptions are often what steers you in the wrong direction.

Sickness, injury, a family emergency, an active volcano, pesky pandemics… our Nomads have seen just about every type of trip interruption.

Don’t be caught off guard if your travel plans take an unexpected turn. Trip interruption insurance cover with World Nomads is designed to help get your holiday back on track.

What is trip interruption coverage?

Trip interruption coverage is there to help safeguard your travel plans if the unexpected puts a halt on your trip, leaving you unable to partake in your travel itinerary — or causes you to end your trip entirely.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

Trip interruption insurance cover varies depending on your Country of Residence and the travel insurance policy you choose. With this in mind, you may have cover for:

  • Sickness and injury: if you or a member of your traveling party suffers sickness or injury while you’re traveling
  • Weather and natural disasters: check your Policy Wording in the Glossary section for a list of natural disasters that we cover
  • Work: if work suddenly becomes a priority while you’re away

What travel insurance plan should I consider?

World Nomads offer two types of travel insurance, Standard and Explorer. Which plan you choose is entirely up to you.

Our Standard Plan includes the fundamentals, like overseas emergency medical, lost, stolen or damaged bags and optional cover for high value items, pre-trip cancellation, and more.

Our Explorer Plan includes all these things plus a few more, which makes this option cost more.

What's the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay and trip interruption insurance?

The differences come down to what stage of your trip you’re at and how they impact your travel plans.

Cancellation cover is designed for when you have to unexpectedly cancel your trip.

Trip delay cover offers help if your travels don’t go according to schedule after your trip has begun, delaying your arrival to your destination.

Trip interruption cover is designed for when an event or circumstance prevents you from partaking in your full, planned itinerary, or means you have to end your trip early.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

A myriad of things! Travel insurance is designed to help in times when the unexpected or unforeseen happens. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you choose, World Nomads plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences
  • Emergency Overseas Medical Cover
  • Emergency Evacuation and repatriation when necessary
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage insurance
  • And more.

Want to extend your stay?

Travel is addictive, we get it. If you decide to extend your stay, you should consider extending your travel insurance too.

Conditions apply, so as soon as you decide to extend your stay get in touch and we’ll help answer any questions you have about how to extend your insurance policy so you remain covered for the duration of your trip.

What is not covered by trip interruption insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some of the things that may not be covered include:

  • If you decide to cancel your trip because it wasn’t what you thought it would be
  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see state.gov).
  • Unattended baggage or personal items, including any items left in a locked car overnight.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Injury that’s as a result of, or happens while, under the influence of drugs or alcohol

It’s always a good idea to check the terms and conditions of your policy, so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

FAQs

What am I covered for if my trip is interrupted?

If you have no option but to interrupt or curtail your trip, you are covered for the value of your unused, non-refundable expenses (for which you paid for and have to forfeit). Cancelation expenses covered include: transportation; accommodation, tours and experiences; visas; tuition or course fees; travel agent fees. Check your Policy Wording for details and the limits for which you are covered.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel Insurance for Safari Tours

Heading out to search for the Big 5? In addition to the perfect binoculars, you may also want to consider travel insurance for your next safari adventure.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Some people like to go wild when they are traveling, and some people like to go into the wild. If your version of wild involves searching for the Big 5 in the Serengeti or Maasai Mara, you’re our kind of person.

Just imagine-you’re bouncing around in your rugged 4x4 jeep as you trek through Kruger National Park in South Africa. Will today be the day you see a herd of elephants crossing the Sabie River or a lioness out on a hunt with her cub?

You’re then quickly shaken from your daydream by a loud thud on the hood of your jeep. You make eye contact with a leopard before he leaps off and runs into the bush. It’s a memory that you’ll be bragging about for years to come. However, in that moment, all the “what-ifs” also come to mind... should you have considered a travel insurance plan with adventure sports cover?

Should I consider adventure travel insurance for a safari?

There is such an allure of seeing wild animals in their natural habitat, but you have to remember - these majestic creatures can sometimes have erratic behavior. If you’re on a safari with an experienced guide, the chances of something happening are minimal. When you’re dealing with wildlife though, anything can happen.

You’ve surely heard about the rare incidents of people being ambushed by a hippo or trampled by an elephant. If you get injured, you’re going to need immediate medical care. Travel insurance could help reimburse you for expenses like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs you may have if you get hurt on your safari.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

You may be going to Zambia on a mission to see zebras roaming freely at Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, but you may also decide to hike the Boiling Pot trail near Victoria Falls or go whitewater rafting on the Zambezi River while you are there.

World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 150 activities. When you get a quote, you can select your country of residence, and easily compare our Standard and Explorer plans side by side. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and for some countries of residence, it includes additional covered activities. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy when you purchase it. Check out both plan options, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs.

If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to emergency medical cover, international travel insurance could help with several other unexpected situations you may encounter on your safari. Depending on your country of residence, World Nomads may also offer cover for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your binoculars, baggage insurance may help reimburse the cost to replace them if your bag was lost by a common carrier.
  • Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance: If your travel buddy gets severe food poisoning from something he ate, it may put a screeching halt to your plans. If something unexpected happens and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Evacuation: If you’re going on a safari, there’s a good chance you may be in a remote destination where there aren't nearby medical facilities. If something happens and you need to get immediate medical care, the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

What are some things trip insurance would not cover?

If you have too many glasses of South African wine at lunch and then try to sneak up to a sleeping lion to grab a selfie, you won’t be covered if that goes terribly wrong. Travel insurance won’t cover you if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol while you are on your safari. It’s also important that you follow the guidance of your safari guide at all times and view wild animals from a safe distance. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Any pre-existing medical condition(s) as explained in the policy wording
  • Wandering from camp on your own, leaving your guide and common sense behind
  • Not following government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy

Tips for preparing for your safari adventure

One thing our team at World Nomads definitely recommends is making sure your camera stays fully charged at all times. You never know what you may see at any given moment. It’s also a really good idea to bring an extra camera battery along. Trust us on this one-you don’t want to miss the money shot!

It’s also important to stay safe on your safari adventure because you don’t want it to get cut short. Here are a few of our tips:

  • Do your research and book with an accredited tour operator.
  • Follow your guide’s instructions at all times and view wildlife from a safe distance.
  • Wear boots and socks when walking around in the bush.
  • Talk to your doctor to see if prescription antimalarial medication is recommended. Depending on the medication, you may need to start this prior to your trip.
  • Check with your country’s government health department to see if they have issued any health advisories for your destination.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask if the water is safe to drink when you are in remote locations.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

Travel Insurance for Cycling and E-Biking

Take life by the handlebars and check out World Nomads travel insurance plans when cycling on your next adventure.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

For lovers of cycling, traveling through a city or a whole region on two wheels can be an eye-opening experience. It can help you get in shape, it’s environmentally friendly, and you get to make as many pit stops to rest and explore as you want. E-biking has added an extra level of awesomeness to the cycling scene, opening it up to travelers of all abilities.

But with all the positives of cycling, there’s also the chance that you could suffer an accident and end up with a sprained ankle, a broken arm, or even worse, end up in the hospital due to a major accident. That’s why you should consider travel insurance if you need to “cover your tracks”.

What’s covered with travel insurance for cycling?

Are you hoping to enjoy some “me time” and do some independent touring on your bike? Or are you wanting to make new friends and join an organized cycling tour? Either way, travel insurance could help with several aspects of your trip. For US residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If you checked your bike in with a common carrier, and it is delayed by more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, you may be eligible for reimbursement of a rental bike to continue your journey. If your bike is permanently lost or damaged by the airline or ground carrier, travel insurance could help you get reimbursement to replace it. Review your policy to get information on maximum limits and depreciation.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: Cycling through the Alps and taking in the fresh air can be great for the body and the mind, but not if it ends up in a bad injury. Emergency medical coverage could help reimburse you for expenses like an ambulance transfer, medication, or a hospital stay. If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to destinations outside of your network or plan.
  • Evacuation: Your cycling route may be far away from medical facilities. If you take the road less traveled and get hurt, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Cycling may be the main reason for your trip but think about all of the other fun things that you might be doing as well. Are you planning to take part in even more sports and adventures during your travels?

World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 200 activities for US residents– you can have coverage for activities like deep sea fishing, pickleball, and snowshoeing. When you get a quote, you can easily compare our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans side by side. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and also includes more activities such as tandem skydiving and cave diving to 165 feet.

Check out both options, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What's not covered with travel insurance?

Travel insurance can assist with a lot, but there are some things it doesn’t cover. Cycling on Yungas Road in Bolivia is one of those things. It has earned the title of “Death Road” for a reason, so we don’t advise you to take on that adventure, and we won’t offer coverage if you do. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Bicycles or e-bikes damaged while in use
  • Any pre-existing medical condition(s) as explained in the policy wording
  • Cycling at a professional level
  • Injuries that happen if you are cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Cycling within 100 miles of your home

Tips for preparing for your cycling trip

As cyclists ourselves, we have learned that it helps to be prepared. Before you hit the road with your bike, helmet and gear, check out a few of our personal tips for having the best cycling trip ever.

  • Check you have all your paperwork. Make sure you have all of your appropriate documents before you leave for your trip. This can include things like proof of any required vaccinations, visitor permits if you plan to visit any national parks, and special tourist visas for the countries you’ll be visiting,
  • Be responsible when choosing a cycling destination or activity. Does the cycling tour suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination? Have you got a ‘fit for travel’ thumbs up from your doctor to take on the mountains and specific altitudes?
  • Wear a helmet and visible clothing. This should be a no-brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning because in many countries around the world, the locals don’t wear helmets when cycling. Another no-brainer is if you’re planning to ride at night, you should wear high visibility clothing to make sure other riders and vehicles see you.
  • Make sure your bike is set up correctly before you ride. Check the saddle, pedals, handlebars and tire pressure before you set forth on your journey.
  • Save your receipts. Hopefully you will have a perfect trip and won’t need to make a claim. But if you do have a mishap, make sure to save all supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. If you have any questions about what is and is not covered, please reach out – we’re happy to help.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Travel Insurance for Cycling and E-Biking

Take life by the handlebars and check out World Nomads travel insurance plans when cycling on your next adventure.

For lovers of cycling, travelling through a city or a whole region on two wheels can be an eye-opening experience. It can help you get in shape, it’s environmentally friendly, and you get to make as many pit stops to rest and explore as you want. E-biking has added an extra level of awesomeness to the cycling scene, opening it up to travellers of all abilities.

But with all the positives of cycling, there’s also the chance that you could suffer an accident and end up with a sprained ankle, a broken arm, or even worse, end up in the hospital due to a major accident. That’s why you should consider travel insurance if you need to cover your tracks.

Travel insurance for cycling and e-biking

If you are not using your bike as your main mode of transportation during your trip but are just riding for pleasure as you take in the beauty of new surroundings, World Nomads travel insurance plans could cover you for cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation.

Are you hoping to enjoy some “me time” and do some independent touring on your bike? Or are you wanting to make new friends and join an organized cycling tour? World Nomads travel insurance could cover either situation.

There are two different levels of cycling coverage for Canadian residents – cycling up to 3,000 meters in elevation and cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation.

  • Cycling up to 3,000 meters in elevation is considered a Level 1 activity.
  • Cycling up to 6,000 meters in elevation is considered a Level 3 activity.

Depending on what new heights you’ll be reaching during your trip, you may need to pay an additional premium when you purchase your policy. Level 1 activities are automatically covered, but you will still need to list this when you purchase your policy. If you are participating in level 2 and 3 activities, you will need to pay an extra premium. Put some thought into what you plan to do or may decide to do on your trip so that you can pick the best travel insurance for your needs.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Will your travels include even more sports and adventures? World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents and has two different plans – Standard and Explorer. The Explorer plan has higher benefit limits and/or sub-limits than the Standard. When you get a quote, you can compare the coverage of both plans side by side.

You’ll need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time that you purchase your policy. Cycling may be the main reason for your trip but think about all the other fun things that you might be doing so that you are covered for all your adventures.

You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time. If you are participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you will need to contact us to make sure you’re covered.

What is covered with travel insurance?

For Canadian residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If you checked your bike in with a common carrier, and it is delayed by more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, you may be eligible for reimbursement of a rental bike to continue your journey. If your bike is permanently lost or damaged by the airline or ground carrier, baggage and gear coverage could help you get reimbursement to replace it. • Emergency Medical Coverage: Cycling through the Alps and taking in the fresh air can be great for the body and the mind, but not if it ends up in a bad injury. Emergency medical coverage could help reimburse you for expenses like an ambulance transfer, medication, or a hospital stay. You will still need to have GHIP coverage in your home province while you are on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.
  • Evacuation: Your cycling route may be far away from medical facilities. If you take the road less travelled and get hurt, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Travel Insurance for Rock Climbing

Taking your adventure to new heights? Learn about the benefits of travel insurance for rock climbing.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

When looking for a mix of thrills, adventure and awesome natural landscapes, rock climbing delivers on all three. With so many top rock-climbing destinations globally such as the Dolomites in Italy, Kalymnos in Greece, and Yosemite National Park here in the US, adrenaline junkies don’t have to look far.

Rock climbing can test your physical and mental abilities. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, you may want to consider travel insurance for adventure activities that could get you the help you need if you are injured or if severe weather derails your trip.

What type of rock climbing is covered?

World Nomads covers several rock-climbing activities whether it’s an indoor rock-climbing day with friends or a week away at Squamish in British Columbia.

The rock-climbing activities we can cover include:

  • Scrambling under 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) is covered under our Standard plan and up to 7,000 meters (22,965 feet) under our Explorer plan – steep terrain using only hands for holds and balance
  • Indoor rock climbing
  • Outdoor rock climbing/bouldering under 7,000 meters (22,965 feet) is covered under our Explorer plan – multi-pitch climbing / sport climbing / bolted / aid climbing / traditional climbing / top or bottom rope climbing

World Nomads offers coverage for more than 200 activities for US residents. When you get a quote, you can compare our Standard and Explorer plans to compare coverage side by side. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and also includes more activities.

Check out both options to see what makes the best sense for your climbing plans, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What does travel insurance for rock climbing cover?

Travel insurance is designed to cover losses arising from sudden, unexpected, and unforeseeable circumstances. For US residents, World Nomads may offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your rappelling gear, we may help reimburse the cost to replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier. If your baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours on your way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for things like toiletries and a change of clothes until you are reunited with your bag. Check the policy wording for per-day and maximum benefit limits.
  • Emergency Medical: Rock climbing and fresh air can be great for the body and soul but not if it ends up in a bad fall. Emergency medical coverage could help if you need urgent medical treatment for an injury.
  • Evacuation: Your next rock-climbing adventure may be far away from medical facilities. With medical evacuation coverage, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help you get transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: Sometimes unexpected things happen – like a sick or injured traveling companion that puts a stop to your rock-climbing adventure. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance does not cover:

  • Participation in a professional rock climbing event
  • Damage that happens to your climbing gear while you are using it
  • Going against local authority warnings by entering closed or restricted areas
  • Not following your doctor’s instructions or what the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advises you to do.
  • Mountain guiding
  • Rock climbing higher than the altitude listed in your policy (Up to 7,000 meters for the Explorer)
  • Rock climbing within 100 miles of your home

Key travel insurance tips for your rock-climbing trip

  • Got your paperwork? You’ll need the right visas and permits wherever you go to climb – insurance doesn’t cover you for not doing your paperwork.
  • Know where to go… and where not to. Check to make sure you are allowed to camp, climb, or just generally be wherever that ‘hot’ climbing spot is. You don’t want to find yourself spending dinner in the local police station instead of the local bar… and insurance doesn’t cover you for illegal acts.
  • Proof of purchase. Yep, any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases.
  • It pays to be prepared. Check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your climbing instructor (if it’s a group climb) – if any seem unreliable, then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Don’t get in over your head. Be responsible when choosing a rock-climbing destination or activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator?
  • Keep an eye on your gear. Don’t leave your expensive rock-climbing gear or any other baggage unattended – those 'I spaced out’ moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Be responsible. Choose a tour operator that promotes responsible tourism, works as part of the local community, and actively helps to conserve the environment.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip 1: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have existing medical condition(s) that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

24/7 emergency assistance

The Emergency Assistance team is available 24/7 and can help you in a medical emergency. The EA team can also arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to medical facilities, and give support to you and your family.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst traveling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses, and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers, and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave canceled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Check out our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, and contact us if you have any questions.

Get a quote 24/7

With World Nomads, you can get an instant quote anytime, anywhere, before you leave home or while you’re on the road.

Trip cancellation

If your travel plans change unexpectedly and some or all of your trip is canceled, our policies offer coverage (up to benefit limits) for some non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your traveling companion, or a close relative is hospitalized or dies
  • Your transport is canceled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’re arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies cover essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged, or stolen.

Travel tip 2: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

Cover for adventure activities and sports

If you’re into the outdoors, Canada is the place to go! Our travel insurance policies offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports, and experiences from skiing in Whistler, to hiking in Jasper National Park, or mountain biking in Montreal. We can also cover some water-based activities, including kayaking and white-water rafting.

Keep in mind that some of these activities may require you to use specific safety gear or to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and other terms and conditions may apply. Be sure to read the exclusions section of your policy closely because some activities such as Mountaineering and professional sports are not covered.

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us before you organize your policy.

Travel tip 3: Canada experiences diverse climates. Pack layers, waterproof gear, and check weather forecasts before heading out for your adventures.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park, or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have an existing medical condition(s), that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

24/7 emergency assistance

The Emergency Assistance team are available 24/7 and can help you if you are having a medical emergency. They can also help arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to medical facilities and give support to you and your family.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst travelling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave cancelled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Trip cancellation

If your travel plans change unexpectedly and some or all of your trip is cancelled, our policies offer coverage (up to benefit limits) for some non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your travelling companion, or a close relative is hospitalised or dies
  • Your transport is cancelled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’ve arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies offer cover for essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged or stolen.

Travel tip: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

What to do if you can’t travel because someone at home is sick or injured

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

If a family member or close relative at home suddenly falls ill, it’s understandable you may not want to continue your travel plans.

Whether you’ve booked but not left yet or are halfway through your trip and need to fly home, here’s what to do when you have no option but to cancel your trip to be by the side of someone you care about.

1. Rearrange or Cancel Your Bookings

As soon as you know a close relative is ill and you are unable to travel or have no choice but to curtail your trip after you’ve left, you must try to rearrange any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport, or tours, or if necessary, cancel them.

2. Get It in Writing

The best way to support your claim is to provide satisfactory written evidence.

Written evidence needs to come from an independent third party and confirm all relevant information, such as the circumstances relating to cancellation, costs incurred, and that pre-paid expenses were non-refundable.

Required Documents Include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel or curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • A report from all relevant travel suppliers or carriers confirming the details around the cancellation, including compensation or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

3. Keep Your Itineraries and Receipts

Be sure to keep all relevant itineraries, receipts, and booking and cancellation confirmations from your tour provider/s and carriers.

If you make a claim you must be able to show that the event was unforeseen, unexpected, and occurred after you booked or paid for your travel arrangements and purchased your travel insurance policy.

This is where keeping your itineraries and receipts comes in handy — and can help keep your claim hassle-free. They’ll be able to confirm your intended destinations, dates of purchase, booking and cancellation costs, etc.

4. What If Someone Gets COVID-19 and I Can’t Travel?

If a close relative in your Country of Residence is sick with, and hospitalized due to, COVID-19 and you have to cancel your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. If you’ve purchased an Explorer plan we may be able to help with the costs of pre-paid travel arrangements if you have to return home to your Country of Residence if a close relative is hospitalized with COVID-19.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

It’s important to note coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

5. Need to Know More?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because someone at home is sick, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you work through things.

And in case of an emergency, our experienced Emergency Assistance Team is available to help you navigate any medical issue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How Do I Make A Claim on My Travel Insurance?
