The vast landscapes and vibrant cities of Canada have a lot to offer travellers from solo adventurers to families. From the breathtaking Rockies, to cosmopolitan hubs like Toronto and Vancouver, Canada offers something for everyone. Embrace outdoor activities in Alberta, multicultural cuisine in Quebec, and a welcoming atmosphere that promises unforgettable memories.

Wherever your visit to the land of the maple leaf takes you, our policies offer benefits (up to the policy limits) for:

And if you’ve already left on your trip, don’t worry – with World Nomads you can buy travel insurance while on the road.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two travel insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs on your Canadian adventure.

Cover for medical emergencies

Whether you’re planning on hiking in Banff National Park, or seeing the Northern Lights in the Yukon, there’s so much to see and do in Canada that the last thing you want is to get sick or injured and worry about how you’re going to pay medical bills. Our overseas medical insurance offers cover for emergency medical treatment if you need:

Travel tip: know your own medical history and needs. For example, if you have an existing medical condition(s), that may invalidate your cover. In some cases, you may need to have a doctor sign off that you’re fit to travel. If you’re not sure whether you’re covered, contact us.

24/7 emergency assistance

The Emergency Assistance team are available 24/7 and can help you if you are having a medical emergency. They can also help arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to medical facilities and give support to you and your family.

Coverage for Coronavirus

Both our Standard and Explorer policies offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Covid-19 whilst travelling around Canada.

Our Explorer plan also offers cover for some Coronavirus related events such as cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some quarantine costs, as well as additional benefits for healthcare workers, residential care workers and law enforcement officers who have their pre-arranged leave cancelled by their employer due to Coronavirus.

Check out our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, and contact us if you have any questions.

With World Nomads you can get an instant quote anytime, anywhere, before you leave home or while you’re on the road.

Trip cancellation

If your travel plans change unexpectedly and some or all of your trip is cancelled, our policies offer coverage (up to benefit limits) for some non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.

All of our policies can offer coverage for you if you can’t travel because:

  • A doctor certifies that you’re medically unfit to travel,
  • You, your travelling companion, or a close relative is hospitalised or dies
  • Your transport is cancelled or delayed because of severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, or strike.

Delayed baggage

What do you do if you’ve arrived in Vancouver, but your bags haven’t? If your luggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, our policies offer cover for essential purchases so you can rest easy while you wait for your bags to turn up.

Our policies also offer coverage if your bags and personal effects are lost, damaged or stolen.

Travel tip: make copies of your essential travel documents and carry essentials such as toiletries, medications, and irreplaceable items in your carry-on luggage.

Cover for adventure activities and sports

If you’re into the outdoors, Canada is the place to go! Our travel insurance policies offer cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences from skiing in Whistler, to hiking in Jasper National Park, or mountain biking in Montreal. We can also cover some water-based activities, including kayaking and white-water rafting.

Keep in mind that some of these activities may require you to use specific safety gear or to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and other terms and conditions may apply. Be sure to read the exclusions section of your policy closely because some activities such as Mountaineering and professional sports are not covered.

If you’re not sure if something you’re planning on doing while on holiday is covered, please contact us before you organise your policy.

Travel tip 2: Canada experiences diverse climates. Pack layers, waterproof gear, and check weather forecasts before heading out for your adventures.

What to do if you can’t travel because someone at home is sick or injured

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

If a family member or close relative at home suddenly falls ill, it’s understandable you may not want to continue your travel plans.

Whether you’ve booked but not left yet or are halfway through your trip and need to fly home, here’s what to do when you have no option but to cancel your trip to be by the side of someone you care about.

1. Rearrange or Cancel Your Bookings

As soon as you know a close relative is ill and you are unable to travel or have no choice but to curtail your trip after you’ve left, you must try to rearrange any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport, or tours, or if necessary, cancel them.

2. Get It in Writing

The best way to support your claim is to provide satisfactory written evidence.

Written evidence needs to come from an independent third party and confirm all relevant information, such as the circumstances relating to cancellation, costs incurred, and that pre-paid expenses were non-refundable.

Required Documents Include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel or curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • A report from all relevant travel suppliers or carriers confirming the details around the cancellation, including compensation or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

3. Keep Your Itineraries and Receipts

Be sure to keep all relevant itineraries, receipts, and booking and cancellation confirmations from your tour provider/s and carriers.

If you make a claim you must be able to show that the event was unforeseen, unexpected, and occurred after you booked or paid for your travel arrangements and purchased your travel insurance policy.

This is where keeping your itineraries and receipts comes in handy — and can help keep your claim hassle-free. They’ll be able to confirm your intended destinations, dates of purchase, booking and cancellation costs, etc.

4. What If Someone Gets COVID-19 and I Can’t Travel?

If a close relative in your Country of Residence is sick with, and hospitalized due to, COVID-19 and you have to cancel your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. If you’ve purchased an Explorer plan we may be able to help with the costs of pre-paid travel arrangements if you have to return home to your Country of Residence if a close relative is hospitalized with COVID-19.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

It’s important to note coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

5. Need to Know More?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because someone at home is sick, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you work through things.

And in case of an emergency, our experienced Emergency Assistance Team is available to help you navigate any medical issue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What to do if you have to cancel your trip due to illness or injury

    Trusted by:

Illness and injury are never fun, especially when they interfere with your travel plans.

If you have no option but to cancel your trip because you’ve fallen ill or become injured in some way, we’re here to help. Because the only thing worse than missing out on your trip is footing the bill when the unforeseen happens.

Here’s what to do in the event you need to cancel:

1. Contact us as soon as possible

If you’ve had an accident, you must notify our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible so that we can confirm your cover and manage any potential claim for you.

You can contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team on +353 21 237 8009 or +353 21 237 8003.

  • Arranging medical transport.
  • Setting up direct payments to medical facilities.
  • Giving support to you and your family.

2. Rearrange or cancel your bookings straight away

As soon as you know you’re unable to travel you must try to rearrange, or if necessary, cancel your bookings as soon as possible. This means contacting any tour operator or carrier where you’ve pre-booked travel arrangements, such as accommodation, transport, or tour providers.

3. Provide all written documents

Written documents are the best way to support your claim. They need to come from an independent third party and provide evidence pertaining to the illness or injury that is preventing you from traveling or continuing your travels, and any relevant confirmation relating to cancellations made with your travel providers, such as the costs incurred, whether the pre-paid expenses were deemed non-refundable, or if refundable, what refunds were provided.

Required documents include:

  • Doctor’s report, written medical diagnosis, or medical certificate from the treating doctor confirming it is medically necessary to cancel, curtail or interrupt your trip.
  • Relevant medical records or reports regarding your illness or injury, including information about pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Ambulance report if one was required.
  • Police report if they were involved.
  • Hospital admission report if the person was admitted to the hospital.
  • A report from all relevant travel supplier or carrier confirming the details around the cancellation, including refund or offers made to you.
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

4. Don’t forget your receipts

If you need to cancel your travel plans due to illness or injury, you’ll need to provide relevant receipts, itineraries, and bookings and cancellation information (including any refunds received).

Your receipts are pertinent to your claim, and they can help keep things hassle-free so you can focus on getting better.

5. Am I covered if I cancel my trip due to COVID-19?

If you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with coronavirus and you have no option but to cancel your trip, or if your travel plans are impacted after being diagnosed with coronavirus during your trip, we may be able to help.

We offer Standard and Explorer Plans, each with different levels of cover. It’s important to note that cover is only available for Coronavirus travel costs if you’ve purchased an Explorer Plan. And we don’t provide cover for any expenses you incur after you return home to your Country of Residence.

Like other illnesses, for a valid claim you must be able to provide satisfactory written evidence of diagnosis as well as all the other details outlined above.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions, and exclusions.

6. Need to know more?

If you’re still unsure what to do if you need to cancel your trip because you or someone in your travel party is ill or injured, we’re here to help answer your questions. Check out our Help Centre that has FAQs on diverse topics that will answer any of your questions. If you are still unsure you can get in touch and we’ll help you navigate the process.

Travel Insurance for Live Action Role Playing (LARP)

Learn about the benefits of travel insurance for live action role playing, and why you may want to consider coverage before your next trip.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Whether you are into fantasy, renaissance, steampunk, or horror, the excitement of participating in live action role play (LARP) can be electrifying. You’re able to step away from the mundane reality and responsibilities of life, and temporarily enjoy some adventurous fun in a fictional setting.

Most game masters take steps to try to keep the environment safe, but some things can’t be avoided. If you are attacked by a crunchy, step back too far when blocking, and trip over a tree root, that fall to the ground will bring you back to reality quickly. If you have plans to participate in a LARP event on your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance plan with adventure sports coverage.

Should I consider travel insurance for LARP?

Trip and falls are some of the most common injuries that happen while LARPing. When you’re engrossed in the moment as a player or non-player character, you can become so consumed in your actions that you don’t pay attention to the terrain around you. Uneven ground and a twisted ankle can be scarier than the horde of monsters coming towards you. Getting hit in the eye with a spell packet is not any fun either. If you get hurt, your health insurance may not always cover you when you are traveling to destinations outside of your network or plan. However, a travel insurance plan from World Nomads could assist by helping to reimburse expenses for things like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs if you get hurt while LARPing.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Are you planning to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels? World Nomads offers adventure travel insurance that covers more than 200 activities for US residents, and you can also have coverage for activities like backpacking, karate, and paint balling. When you get a quote, you can compare our Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans to see what each covers. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and also includes more activities such as cliff jumping, hang gliding, and spelunking.

Check out both options though, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs. If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

World Nomads covers international and domestic trips, when traveling at least 100 miles from home. In addition to emergency medical coverage, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. For US residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your favorite boffer sword, baggage cover may help reimburse the cost to replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier. If your baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours on your way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for things like toiletries and a change of clothes until you are reunited with your bag. Check the policy wording for per-day and maximum benefit limits.
  • Trip Interruption and Cancellation Insurance: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Evacuation: If you get injured while LARPing in a place where there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

What are some things travel insurance would not cover?

If you arrive at your event, and aren’t vibing with the plot of your LARP, your adventure travel insurance would not cover the cancellation of your trip. Some other things that are not covered include:

  • Damage that happens to your LARP equipment while you are using it
  • Injuries that happen if you are LARPing under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy
  • Domestic travel within 100 miles of your home

Tips for LARPing safely

We’ve learned that every LARP is different, and we encourage you to make sure an event fits your comfort level before participating. Find out ahead of time what type of story you are joining in, and the combat the event allows. Never make assumptions about safety and always ask questions related to the equipment and actions that are classified as safe.

Here are a few other tips we have found to help keep you safe while LARPing:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Know the safe words beforehand.
  • Read all of the rules.
  • Listen to the game master and marshal.
  • Don’t drink and LARP.
  • Wear a helmet.
  • Perform a weapons check.
  • Get rest the day before.
  • Take breaks when you need to.

This is not a full list of what is and isn’t covered, so please check your policy for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. Any example scenarios provided above are not a guarantee of coverage. All claims are subject to review, require documentation and are considered individually. If you have any questions about what is and is not covered, please reach out – we’re happy to help.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

Are you planning to explore even more sports and adventures while you are travelling? World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents. When you get a quote, you can check out our Standard and Explorer plans to compare coverage side by side and decide on the best travel insurance coverage for your needs.

You will need to list all the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time that you purchase your policy. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.

Level 1 activities like live action role play, archery, canyoning, and golf are automatically covered, but these will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy. However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like hang gliding, tandem skydiving, or zip lining. Special conditions may also apply. If you plan on participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you will need to contact us to determine  if you will be  covered.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

World Nomads covers international and domestic trips, when travelling outside of your home province. In addition to emergency medical coverage, travel insurance may help with several other aspects of your trip. For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your favorite boffer sword, baggage cover may help reimburse the cost to replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier.  If your baggage going to your destination is delayed by an airline or ground carrier for 12 hours or more, you may also be reimbursed for things like toiletries or a change of clothes until you are reunited with your bag. Check the policy wording for complete details of coverage, conditions, and exclusions.

If you arrive at your event, and aren’t vibing with the plot of your LARP, your adventure travel insurance would not cover you if you wanted to cancel or interrupt of your trip. Some other things that are not covered include:

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

If you have plans to participate in a LARP event on your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance plan with adventure sports cover.

However, a travel insurance plan from World Nomads could assist by helping to reimburse expenses for costs like x-rays, prescription medications, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs if you get hurt while LARPing.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure activities I might participate in during my trip?

If you are looking to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels, you can compare the adventure travel insurance cover in both the Standard and Explorer travel insurance plans that are offered by World Nomads, as we offer cover for more than 150 activities

When you get a quote, you can select your country of residence, and compare both plans side by side to see what each covers. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and for some countries of residence, it includes additional covered activities. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy when you purchase it. Check out both plan options, because only you can decide the best travel insurance for your needs.

If you aren’t sure if something is covered, contact our customer service team and they can help explain what each policy includes.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to emergency medical cover, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. Depending on your country of residence, World Nomads may also offer cover for:

  • Baggage and Gear: If the airline lost the bag that held your favorite boffer sword, baggage cover may help replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel Insurance for trip interruption

Learn how trip interruption cover can help if your plans get unexpectedly sidetracked.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

As travellers ourselves, we have experienced some of the cool surprises you can encounter on your adventures. For example, trekking through Iceland, you may get to see nature’s best light show if you are lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights.

Not all unforeseen surprises are as dazzling though. Sickness or injuries to yourself or an immediate family member are just a couple of the unanticipated things that can abruptly put a halt to your fun. Because you can never predict an interruption in your travels, you may want to consider travel insurance.

What is trip interruption Coverage?

A trip interruption is something that happens that causes you to end your trip early or makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary that occurs after trip start date. If you get severely injured or sick while you are travelling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.

World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage as a part of our adventure travel insurance policies, and it may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.

For example, if you paid in advance for flights and hotels, but you broke your leg and can’t continue your trip, you may get reimbursed for your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs if you can’t recover those costs from the travel supplier.

Sometimes you may deal with an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you are able to rejoin it before it is over. If that happens, you may be eligible for reimbursement of the extra economy class transportation costs, via the most cost-effective itinerary to your next destination in order to catch-up with your trip.

If you get hurt and have to go home early, you could also be covered for transportation costs to return you to your home province. However, these transportation expenses would not be covered if, prior to your policy effective date, you did not purchase a return air ticket to return to your home province as part of your trip.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

Canadian residents may be covered for reasons such as:

  • You, your travel companion, immediate family member, or business partner is injured in an accident, develops an unexpected emergency medical condition, or dies while you are on your trip.
  • An official governmental body or health authority in your country of residence issues an advisory against travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary and the advisory was issued after your start date. (This does not apply to advisories issued due to epidemic or pandemic).
  • A natural disaster renders your principal residence in Canada uninhabitable.
  • An unannounced strike stops you from travelling.
  • Inclement weather conditions cause your scheduled flight on a common carrier to be delayed for at least 3 hours or cancelled.

What travel insurance plan should I consider?

Only you can decide what plan is best for you. World Nomads offers two options - the Standard and Explorer plan. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage.

When you get a quote, you can compare each plan side by side to see what each covers. Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording, and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. If you have any questions, please reach out; we are happy to help.

What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption insurance?

Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip. Coverage starts on or after your policy effective date and ends on your departure or start date.

Trip Delay coverage may help when your arrival at a trip destination is delayed. Coverage starts on your departure or start date and ends return date.

Trip Interruption coverage is when something happens in the middle of the trip and you’re unable to continue on as planned. Coverage starts on your departure or start date and ends return date.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to trip interruption, a World Nomads travel insurance policy may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip.

For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Adventure Activities: World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents. You will need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time you purchase your policy. Level 1 activities like golf and racquetball are automatically covered, but will still need to be listed when your purchase your policy. You will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like spelunking and hang gliding. If you are participating in an activity that isn’t listed when you are ready to purchase your policy, contact us to see if we can extend cover. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: If you get sick or injured on your trip, travel medical insurance could assist with reimbursement for things like an ambulance transfer, medication, or a hospital stay. You will still need to have GHIP coverage in your home province while you are on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.
  • Emergency Evacuation: If there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need. Make sure you contact our Emergency Assistance Team before seeking any medical treatment or an evacuation.
  • Baggage Insurance: If the airline loses your bag, baggage protection may help provide reimbursement to replace your belongings, subject to depreciation. If your checked baggage is delayed by an airline or ground carrier for more than 12 hours while on your way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for the essentials, like toiletries and a change of clothes, that you might need until you are reunited with your bag. Note that baggage and personal effects cover does not provide cover for delayed baggage on your final return flight to your home province.

What is not covered by trip interruption insurance?

If you set forth on your journey and just aren’t feeling the vibe of the destination or your travel partner, trip interruption won’t cover any costs involved with ending your trip early. Some other things that may not be covered include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Participation in activities not listed as covered in your policy.
  • Expenses incurred for treatment or services that are prohibited under your GHIP.
  • Injury or illness that happens while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Injuries that happen if you are a competing in a professional sports competition.
  • Flights back to your home province if you had not purchased a return ticket prior to your policy’s effective date.

What should you do if you need to interrupt your trip?

  • Your health and safety is our first priority. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, first contact local emergency services, then contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • You are required to contact us within 24 hours when you become aware of a trip interruption.
  • Log in to your member account online and start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • Try to cancel unused portions of your trip immediately and attempt to recoup prepaid unused expenses from your travel providers.
  • Save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. You may be asked to provide things like receipts from your transportation provider or tour operator, forms showing your medical expenses, or police reports.
  • It’s always a bummer when something happens and your trip gets cut short. Once you are ready, take a look at some of our team’s tips on destinations around the world and get some inspiration for your next adventure.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

A trip interruption is something that happens that causes you to end your trip early, or makes you unable to participate in your full planned itinerary. If you get severely injured or sick while you are traveling, or you get a call from back home and learn that an immediate family member has unexpectedly passed away, you may not be able to complete the rest of your planned trip.

World Nomads offers trip interruption coverage as a part of our adventure travel insurance policies, and it may help you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable travel costs if your plans change for a covered reason.

Sometimes you may deal with an interruption that causes you to miss part of your trip, but you are able to rejoin it before it is over. If that happens, you may be able to recover costs for transportation arrangements that you make in order to catch-up with your trip.

If a travel companion becomes sick or hurt and you are forced to stay longer because they are unable to travel, your plan may offer coverage for additional nights in a hotel.

If you have to go home early for a covered reason, you could also be covered for transportation costs.

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

U.S. residents may have coverage for reasons such as:

  • Sickness, injury, or death of yourself, a travel partner, or a covered family member.
  • You or your travel buddy being required to work unexpectedly during your trip.
  • Weather that stops your common carrier from providing services for more than 24 consecutive hours and prevents you from getting you to your destination.
  • Natural disasters that make your home or destination accommodation uninhabitable.
  • Military reassignment or revoked leave.
  • Terrorist incidents in your departure city or a city on your trip itinerary.
  • Bankruptcy or default of a travel supplier.
  • Unexpected jury service.

What travel insurance plan should I consider?

Only you can decide what plan is best for you. World Nomads offers two options - the Standard and Explorer plan. The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and includes more covered activities.

Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording, and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. You can get a quote to compare both plans side by side and learn more about everything that is covered. If you have questions, contact our team and they will be happy to assist.

What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption insurance?

Trip Cancellation coverage is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip.

Trip Delay coverage may help when your trip gets delayed for more than 6 hours because of a defined hazard, like an unannounced strike, a weather delay or a lost or stolen passport.

Trip Interruption coverage is when something happens in the middle of the trip and you’re unable to continue on as planned.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to trip interruption a World Nomads travel insurance policy may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. For U.S. residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Adventure Activities: World Nomads covers more than 200 activities for U.S. residents on both the Standard and Explorer plans. The Explorer plan also includes more adventurous activities such as bungee jumping and skydiving.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: If you get sick or injured on your trip, travel medical coverage could assist with reimbursement for things like x-rays, medication, or a hospital stay.
  • Emergency Evacuation: If there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Baggage Insurance: If the airline loses your bag, baggage protection may help replace your belongings if it is lost by a common carrier. If your bag is delayed for more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your coverage could help pay for things you may need until you are reunited with your bag.

What is not covered by trip interruption insurance?

If you set forth on your journey and just aren’t feeling the vibe of the destination or your travel partner, trip interruption won’t cover any costs involved with ending your trip early. Some other things that may not be covered include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Routine pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Participation in any military maneuver or training exercise; or acts of war.
  • Participation as an athlete in professional sports.
  • Activities not listed as covered in your policy.
  • Getting hurt if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

What should you do if you need to interrupt your trip?

  • Your health and safety is our first priority. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, first contact local emergency services, then contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • If you are interrupting your trip for medical reasons, you will need to be seen by a doctor who can certify that you are not able to continue your trip.
  • Try to recoup prepaid, unused, nonrefundable expenses from your travel providers before filing a claim.
  • Save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. You may be asked to provide things like receipts from your transportation provider or tour operator, forms showing your medical expenses, or police reports.
  • You must advise us within 7 days if you are making a claim. You can log in to your member account online to start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • It’s always a bummer when something happens and your trip gets cut short. Once you are ready, take a look at some of our team’s tips on destinations around the world and get some inspiration for your next adventure.

The Explorer plan has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage, and for some countries of residence, it includes additional covered activities.

Maximum benefits can be found in the Schedule of Benefits in your policy wording, and are subject to any applicable sub-limits. If you have questions, contact our team and they will be happy to assist.

What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip delay, and trip interruption insurance?

Trip Cancellation cover is what kicks in if you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, before you’ve departed for your trip.

Trip Delay cover may help when your trip gets delayed by the minimum amount of time mentioned in your policy.

Trip Interruption cover is when something happens in the middle of the trip and you’re unable to continue on as planned.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

A World Nomads travel insurance policy may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip. You may also be covered for:

  • Adventure Activities: World Nomads offers cover for more than 150 activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy when you purchase it.
  • Emergency Medical Cover: If you get sick or injured on your trip, travel medical insurance could assist with reimbursement for things like x-rays, medication, or a hospital stay.
  • Emergency Evacuation: If there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.
  • Baggage Insurance: If the airline loses your bag, baggage protection may help reimburse the cost to replace your belongings, subject to depreciation.

  • Injury or illness that happens while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

This is not a full list of exclusions. Please read your policy wording for full details, and reach out if you have any questions.

What should you do if you need to interrupt your trip?

  • Your health and safety is our first priority. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, first contact local emergency services, then contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • Try to recoup prepaid, unused expenses from your travel providers.
  • Make sure you save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. You may be asked to provide things like receipts from your transportation provider or tour operator, forms showing your medical expenses, or police reports.
  • Log in to your member account online and start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • It’s always a bummer when something happens and your trip gets cut short. Once you are ready, take a look at some of our team’s tips on destinations around the world and get some inspiration for your next adventure.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch

Travel Insurance for Pickleball

If you’re incorporating pickleball into your travel plans, learn how travel insurance can help in case the unexpected strikes.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

Millions of people have fallen in love with the unique combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong known as pickleball.

As one of the fastest growing sports in the world, more hotels are building pickleball courts to give experienced and new picklers a chance to get in on the action while they are travelling.

While serious injuries are rare in pickleball, even the best of us have lost our balance and taken a tumble when going for an overhead slam.

If pickleball is on your list of activities for your next trip, you may want to consider a World Nomads travel insurance plan with adventure sports coverage, that offers coverage to protect you both on and off the court, when you are travelling.

Should I consider travel insurance for pickleball?

Falls are one of the most common pickleball related injuries. You can be proactive and take steps ahead of time to work on your balance, but as you are twisting, turning, and moving across the court, there’s always a possibility of accidents.

A travel insurance plan from World Nomads could assist with things like x-rays, medication, a hospital stay, or other emergency medical needs you may have if you suffer an emergency medical condition and get hurt playing pickleball.

You will still need to have GHIP coverage in your home province while you are on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.

Does travel insurance cover other adventure sports I might participate in during my trip?

Planning to explore even more sports and adventures during your travels? World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents.

When you get a quote, you can check out our Standard and Explorer plans to compare coverage side by side.

You will need to list all of the activities that you plan to participate in while on your trip at the time you purchase your policy. You won’t be able to add activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all at that time.

Level 1 activities like bungee jumping, hot air ballooning, and roller skating are automatically covered (and will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy). However, you will need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like snowboarding, rappelling, or hang gliding.

If you are participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, you will need to contact us to make sure you are covered.

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to emergency medical coverage, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected and unforeseen emergency situations you may encounter while you are on your trip.

For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Baggage protection: If the airline lost the bag that held your favorite paddle, baggage protection may help reimburse the cost to replace it if it’s lost by a common carrier. If your baggage is delayed by an airline or ground carrier for more than 12 hours while on your way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for the essentials, like toiletries and a change of clothes, that you might need until you are reunited with your bag. Check the policy wording for complete details of coverage, conditions, and exclusions.
  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption: If something unexpected happens like an illness or injury, and you need to cancel or interrupt your trip, you may be able to recover your unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses.
  • Evacuation: If you get injured playing pickleball in a place where there aren't nearby medical facilities, the World Nomads 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team could help get you transported to a place that offers the level of care you need.

What are some things travel insurance would not cover?

  • Damage that happens to your pickleball equipment while you are using it.
  • Injuries that happen if you are competing in a professional pickleball competition.
  • Injuries that happen if you are playing pickleball under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Participation in other activities not listed as covered in your policy.

Tips for playing pickleball

From our own time on the court, we’ve learned that many injuries can often be avoided.  Here are a few tips we have learned from our own experiences as picklers.

  • Drink plenty of water. This can help prevent dizziness, nausea, and cramps that could cause an injury.
  • Wear the right shoes. Shoes designed for court sports are best.  The soles are really important since you are moving from side to side and shifting your weight.  Try to find a shoe that has good stability on both the inside and outside of your foot.
  • Wear eye protection. The ball is lightweight, but it can travel at high speeds.  You don’t want it flying toward your unprotected eyes.
  • Pick the right paddle. Higher quality paddles are made to absorb some of the impact better, and could help you avoid elbow and shoulder injuries. You will also want to make sure the one you choose isn’t too heavy for you.
  • Warm up. Even a brisk 5 minute walk around the court helps get your heart pumping before you play.
  • Make sure to stretch before and after you play pickleball.  Focus on your ankles, legs, groin, lower back, shoulders, and arms.
  • Don’t play on wet courts. Even though the court’s surface is typically gritty to provide extra traction, it can become slick when wet.
  • Wear sunscreen when playing outside. Look for one that has an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours.
  • Check with your doctor. You know your body best. If you have physical conditions that you have concerns about, always talk to your doctor first about any exercise limitations that you may have.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.
