Travel Insurance for Singapore

From exploring Gardens by the Bay to eating your way through Chinatown, learn how travel insurance for Singapore could help Canadian travellers.

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Singapore? The futuristic gardens at Gardens by the Bay, the sweeping views from the Marina Bay Sands Skypark, and the tropical gardens of spots like Bukit Timah Nature Reserve come to mind for us.

The tiny city-state of Singapore has been a major trading hub for more than 700 years, and the relics from the millions who have passed through make it a fascinating place for foodies and history buffs. Dig into the multicultural cuisine and tasty street food in Chinatown, explore the colorful streets and Hindu temples of Little India, and learn about the Malay influences in Kampong Glam. Whether you’re using it as a stopover before travelling further into Southeast Asia or are dedicating your entire vacation to Singapore, the country offers an exciting mix of lush nature, modern city-life, and diverse culture in a compact space.

As beautiful and fun as Singapore is, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote and purchase travel insurance for Singapore before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Singapore?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like theft of your baggage or a missed connection due to inclement weather that grounds your flight, for example.

Travel insurance for Singapore can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as paddle boarding at Sentosa Island.

Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.

Travel insurance for activities in Singapore

Whether you’re planning to sail around Marina Bay Sands or hike the coast-to-coast trail on the island, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Singapore.

Kayaking through mangroves in Pulau Ubin, spending a day enjoying the waterslides at Adventure Cove Water Park, and cycling around the island’s urban and coastal routes are all covered under travel insurance for Singapore.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. For example, if you go hiking while on your trip and you didn’t list that activity out when making your plan purchase, you won’t be covered if something were to happen on the trail. You may want to overshoot and list out all possible activities you may do, just in case.

Also keep in mind that you will be covered under the base plan to participate in various adventure sports, activities, volunteer, and work experiences, shown as Level 1, under both our Standard and Explorer Plans. To have coverage for adventures sports, work and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need to upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium at the time you purchase your policy.

Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Singapore

If you have an accident and injure yourself while windsurfing or jet skiing in East Coast Park, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you must do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible or have someone call on your behalf.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Singapore, including assisting you with finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Singapore

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you land in Changi but your bag—packed with your new swimsuit and favorite sundress for your tropical holiday—never showed up on the carrousel? The first step is to contact the airline.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is delayed for more than 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Singapore may reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.

Singapore is generally considered very safe and has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. However, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere, and it is important to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded tourist areas or public transportation. If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (deprecation and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. The Standard and Explorer plans each have different limits.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Singapore

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses should an unforeseen (and covered) event happen.

Trip cancellation and Trip interruption coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies before your leave, or back home in Canada after you’ve departed. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused, pre-paid travel expenses (up to plan limits) that you can no longer use.

Tips for travelling to Singapore from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Singaporean adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Singapore before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

While English is widely spoken, know that as a multicultural country, several languages are spoken including Chinese, Malay, and Tamil.

Singapore is known for having strict rules, from a ban on chewing gum and on smoking in public places, to strict laws against littering and a zero-tolerance policy towards drugs. Breaking the law can result in a minor fine or a more severe punishment. Read up on these laws beforehand so you can respect the local culture, avoid any unnecessary obstacles, and relax during your vacation! Travel insurance won’t cover you if you are involved in a criminal act.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us

Travel Insurance for Turkey

From sailing around the Turquoise Coast to visiting the Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque in Istanbul, learn how insurance for Turkey could help Canadian travellers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Turkey? Riding the ferry along the Bosporus while watching Istanbul’s skyline pass by, markets filled with antiques and carpets, the dreamy blue waters along the Turquoise Coast, and hot air balloons floating over the ancient caves of Cappadocia all come to mind for us.

Of course, streetside kebab stands, honey-soaked baklava, a fresh pot of Turkish coffee, relaxing treatments in hammams, landscapes dotted with olive trees and vineyards, busy markets selling spices, nuts, and fruit, and experiencing Muslim traditions during Ramadan are all part of the allure as well. Whether you want to sun and swim in coastal towns or visit during winter to beat the crowds while you’re busy exploring ancient ruins, your Turkish adventure is sure to be unforgettable. This country straddling two continents is steeped in history and brimming with natural scenery, grand architecture, and a flavorful cuisine.

As captivating as Turkey is, you can imagine we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians travelling there. International travel can be life-changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote and purchase travel insurance for Turkey before you set forth on your journey.

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. Travel insurance for Turkey can also protect you against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as kiteboarding in Bodrum.

Our travel insurance plans also include important travel, medical, and security assistance services designed to provide you with guidance before and during your trip.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures.

Travel insurance for activities in Turkey

Whether you’re planning to go on a multi-day trek along southwestern Turkey’s Lycian Way or sailing around the islands near Göcek, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Turkey. Taking a hot air balloon ride over the rock formations of Cappadocia, skiing in Uludag, kayaking to the sunken city in Kekova National Park, and cycling along the historic Eurasian Road are all covered under travel insurance for Turkey.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. You must list all your activities out when purchasing the plan—and if something happens while you are participating in an activity you didn’t list on your plan, then you won’t be covered. Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Turkey

Whether you have an accident while rock climbing in Antalya or end of with a serious bout of food poisoning, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Turkey.

While water is technically safe to drink from the tap in Turkey, it is common to drink bottled water instead. The water is heavily chlorinated and not particularly pleasant tasting. Food poisoning is also something that can happen, especially when it comes to street food. Use common sense when you’re choosing where to eat. Those 3am street mussels or wet burgers in Taksim Square after a rowdy night out might seem like a great idea at the time, but you might be end up regretting your decision later.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you must do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible or have someone contact them on your behalf.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Turkey, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost and stolen luggage in Turkey

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you land in Istanbul, but your bag packed with your favorite dresses and shoes for your vacation didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens and your bag is delayed for 12 hours or more, your travel insurance for Turkey could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, until you and your bag are reunited.

While Turkey is generally quite safe and pickpocketing isn’t as common as in other major European cities, bag snatching and pickpocketing can still happen. It’s important to be especially vigilant in crowded tourist spots, like the Grand Bazaar, and on busy trams. Be mindful for scammers at the ferry terminals in Istanbul who might tell you that the ticket machine is broken and offer to buy a ticket for you—and then charge you far above the ticket price.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Turkey

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip

cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses.

Travel insurance for Turkey can also help you in the case of unexpected circumstances while on your trip, such as natural disasters. Turkey is in a very active earthquake zone and if the Canadian government issues a ‘do not travel’ advisory, your travel insurance for Turkey may be able help.

Tips for travelling to Turkey from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Turkish adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Turkey before you leave. Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

English isn’t widely spoken in a lot of the country, Istanbul included, so a few basic Turkish phrases can go a long way. You may also want to read up on some travel tips to familiarize yourself with local customs before you take off. Istanbul and many coastal towns are quite modern but other regions, especially in southeastern Turkey, are much more culturally conservative. Women will benefit from carrying a light-weight scarf, which can come in handy to cover your head and shoulders at religious sites.

Enjoy your adventure and don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path! Find the magic lesser-visited spots, like Mardin and other ancient towns in eastern Turkey, or quieter islands such as a Gökçeada.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. True Claims Stories

Never travel without travel insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain, and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

How can travel insurance help if your luggage is stolen

If you’re in the unfortunate position of having your luggage stolen, here’s what you need to do

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

So, you’ve packed your sunnies, swimsuits, and a stack of holiday reads, departed the UK, and landed in sunny Spain, ready to soak up some rays. But there’s just one problem…your luggage has decided to take its own detour. No need to panic—World Nomads offers travel insurance for stolen or damaged baggage.

If you’re in the unfortunate position of having your luggage stolen, here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Report it to the relevant person/venue

No matter where your luggage goes missing, reporting it as soon as possible is essential. Here’s what to do based on where you last had your belongings:

On public transport (plane, train, bus, or ferry):

Report the loss immediately to the transport provider. Request written evidence, like a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) if available. Keep hold of any tickets, baggage receipts, or relevant documentation useful for a claim. Also, ask about any compensation they can provide and get this in writing.

At Your Accommodation:

If your luggage is lost or stolen from a hotel or other accommodation, immediately report it to the staff. Request a written confirmation of the incident and any compensation they might offer.

During a Tour or at a Public Venue (museum, airport, sports stadium):

Notify the tour operator, venue management, or security team of the incident. Ask for written confirmation of the loss or theft and any details on possible compensation.

Your situation not on here? Get in contact, and we can help.

Tip for UK travellers: keep all supporting documents, like tickets and receipts, and scan copies or save photos in a secure location. These records will be essential if you need to make a claim, especially for any replacement items you purchase while waiting for your luggage.

Step 2: Contact the Police

Don’t skip this step: filing a police report is critical for making an insurance claim. Head to the nearest station to report your lost luggage and be sure to get a copy of the report or at least a reference number—you’ll need it to back up your claim.

Step 3: Secure Your Devices and Cards

Act quickly to protect your information if your phone, tablet, or credit cards are missing. First, try calling your device—it might just turn up! If not, use tracking features like Find My iPhone or Find My Mobile to locate it on a map. If the device can’t be found, contact your provider to block the service and ask for written confirmation.

Call your bank immediately to cancel any stolen credit or debit cards and prevent unauthorised charges. Keep records of all actions taken, as these can be helpful when filing a claim.

Step 4: Keep All Receipts and Documentation

Keep all your paperwork handy—receipts for emergency buys, travel itineraries, booking confirmations, and any cancellations. Missing documents could mean a reduced or rejected claim, so make sure you’ve got a solid record of everything.

Ideally, provide original purchase receipts for lost or damaged items, but if these aren’t available (especially for older items), alternatives like bank statements, credit card statements, invoices, or a notarised statement (if the item was a gift) can work as proof. Having this documentation will help ensure a smoother claims process.

Step 5: Need to know more?

Lost, stolen, and damaged luggage incidents account for nearly half of all travel insurance claims, so if you’re dealing with stolen gear, you’re not alone. And if you’re reading this as part of your trip prep, good on you for being proactive.

World Nomads offers two flexible travel insurance plans for UK travellers —Standard and Explorer—both covering stolen belongings. The Standard Plan provides the basics (up to £1,500 cover for baggage), while the Explorer Plan provides higher coverage limits and extra benefits (up to £3,000 cover for baggage).

Remember, each travel insurance policy is unique. Check your policy wording for all terms, conditions, and exclusions for the full rundown.

Got questions about what’s covered? Just ask us. Or, if you're ready to roll, grab a quote today.

What’s not covered

  • Leaving your bags or valuables unattended—even for a quick moment—can void your coverage.
  • Not reporting a loss or theft to local authorities or relevant staff (e.g., hotel or transport provider) can affect your claim.
  • Damage or loss of electronics in checked luggage is typically not covered.
  • If you’re taking unnecessary risks or breaking the law, we won’t be able to cover any mishaps.
  • Using gear or equipment in a way that’s not covered by your policy, like extreme sports, may leave you unprotected.

Travelling tips for before you leave the United Kingdom

  • Add a distinctive, trackable security tag with your contact info (minus your home address) to make your luggage easier to spot and recover if it goes missing.
  • Be proactive and install tracking apps on your devices before travelling abroad.
  • Scan copies of all your docs and store them in your phone before you leave the UK—future you might just thank you!

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Morocco? Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Morocco

Whether you have an accident while biking the precarious roads of Dades Gorge or end up with a serious bout of food poisoning, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Morocco.

Water and food-borne illnesses are a potential risk in Morocco. Make sure to drink bottled, treated, or filtered water and be careful of the places where you eat fresh vegetables. Food poisoning is no fun and can put a damper on any vacation.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible or have someone call on your behalf.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Morocco, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Morocco

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you arrive in Marrakech but your bag packed with hiking gear for your trek through the Atlas Mountains didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.

Up-to-date warnings— including weather advisories and political situations—will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan

number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. A lot of Morocco is French speaking, although the dialect might be quite different from the French Canadian that you’re used to. A few Arabic phrases can also come in handy to communicate in markets and restaurants.

You may also want to read up on some travel and cultural tips to familiarize yourself with local customs. Modest dress and a light-weight scarf is recommended for women to cover your head and shoulders at religious sites and in rural, more conservative regions. Be wary of scams at markets and don’t be afraid to engage in friendly haggling!

As with anywhere you visit, add a few unexpected destinations to your itinerary, such as the historic city of Tangier or join the El-Kelaa M'Gouna Rose Festival. And seek out community-driven experiences that connect you with local culture and give back to the communities you’re visiting.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, of if you have questions, just ask us.

Traveler Tip 1: make copies of all key documents you’ll be travelling with – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

Traveler tip 2: if you’re a victim of theft, to file a claim, be sure you get a police report or other written documentation such as a property irregularity report from your common carrier.

Travel Insurance for Nepal

From high elevation trekking in the Himalayas to wildlife safaris in Chitwan, learn how travel insurance for Nepal could help Canadian travellers.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Nepal? Snow-capped mountains, Buddhist temples, and a welcoming, friendly culture all come to mind for us. Travellers also come to search for tigers and rhinos on safari in one of Nepal’s national parks, join a meditation retreat, relax in Pokhara, stay with a local family in farming villages, experience a religious ceremony or cultural festival, and sample Nepalese dishes like momos and dal bhat. Whatever your dream vacation looks like, Nepal is a place of endless adventure and rich culture.

With this much diversity, you can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Canadians in Nepal. While we’ve had the best times in Nepal, international travel can sometimes involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance for Nepal before you set forth on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Nepal?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer protection against certain unexpected and unforeseeable circumstances that might disrupt your travel plans. You’ll want to consider travel insurance to protect yourself against expenses related to unforeseen events like medical emergencies or bad weather causing a missed connection.

Travel insurance for Nepal can also protect against large medical bills resulting from accidents that may happen on your outdoor adventures such as an injury sustained while hiking on the multi-day Manaslu Circuit or one of Nepal’s other great treks.

We have two plans to choose from for different types of travellers and adventures. You might notice that our travel insurance plans for Nepal ring in at a higher cost than our insurance plans for other destinations. This is due to the inherent risk of high altitude climbing, which is one of the main reasons our nomads go to Nepal.

World Nomads travel insurance can provide coverage for hiking up to 6,000 metres.

Travel insurance for activities in Nepal

Whether you’re planning to hike to Everest Base Camp or go white water rafting on Trishuli River, World Nomads travel insurance covers Canadians for over 250 activities in Nepal. Day hikes and multi-day treks in the Himalayas, safari excursions in Chitwan, and paragliding in Pokhara are all covered under travel insurance for Nepal too.

For coverage for adventures sports, work and activities listed as Level 2 or Level 3, you will need upgrade your adventure sports coverage and pay an extra premium. High elevation trekking to popular spots like Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, and the Manaslu Circuit all require Level 3 coverage, as they involve hiking in altitudes over 3,000 meters. Note: Special conditions and exclusions may apply to while taking part in certain sports and activities. For the full policy terms and conditions please review the policy wording.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Nepal

In Nepal, the healthcare system may not be what you are familiar with back home. It can be particularly difficult to access reliable health care in rural areas, especially remote regions of the Himalayas. You can protect yourself from emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for Nepal.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

Travel insurance for Nepal also may cover medical evacuation and repatriation insurance, if our Emergency Assistance Team or your treating Physician recommends you return Canada because of your medical condition after you’ve received medical treatment. In the event that you need an air ambulance from the mountains to transport you to the nearest qualified medical service provider, you must receive approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams first. The team knows which evacuation companies are reliable and safe; we know of several scams operating in this space. Without prior approval, you will not be reimbursed for the cost of the flight. The emergency assistance team can also help you determine whether your injury or illness qualifies for a trip down the mountain. Be aware that some local companies might scam you into believing your injury is worse than it is to drive up costs. Remember, you must contact our Emergency Assistance Team before seeking medical attention, emergency evacuation or repatriation, unless your medical condition prevents you from calling, in which case you must call as soon as medically possible or have someone call on your behalf.

Travel insurance for scams in Nepal

Nepal is a stunning destination for adventure and cultural experiences, but there are some things to be aware of when visiting. Travellers sometimes can encounter scams that can derail your plans and impact your trip. Unfortunately, these scams are not covered by travel insurance.

One common scam travellers to Nepal have encountered is an evacuation and helicopter scam. Trekking companies may offer a cheap trekking excursion but manipulate you into signing a form agreeing to helicopter evacuation. It’s helpful to do some advance research on potential trekking companies and read reviews to ensure the company you’re trekking with is trustworthy and legitimate.

Another potential scam is with taxis. If you grab a taxi off the street, either insist they use the meter or agree on a price beforehand, to prevent them from driving long routes or pretending that the meter is broken to drive up the costs. You also might encounter people on the street offering to show you around and then demanding money for their tour guides services. Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming country and using common sense can go a long way to help you avoid scams.

Travel insurance for lost bags in Nepal

Whether the airline lost your luggage, or your purse was stolen, lost bags can happen during travel. Did you land in Kathmandu but your bag—packed with your hiking boots and trekking gear—didn’t? The first step is to contact the airline.

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, your travel insurance for Nepal could still reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries, and maybe even new trekking gear, until you and your bag are reunited.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Nepal

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses.

We never anticipate natural disasters interrupting our trip to Nepal, but they can happen. Earthquakes are a potential risk, which can also trigger avalanches in the mountains. Monsoon season typically hits from July through September in Nepal, and heavy rains have been known to cause extreme floods and landslides. Storms and natural disasters are impossible to predict so the best thing you can do is protect yourself with travel insurance for Nepal.

If you bought your travel insurance plan prior to a natural disaster developing into a major event, your travel insurance for Nepal may provide cancellation protection if you are unable to occupy your destination residence because of a natural disaster. Also, if after you’ve purchased your travel insurance policy, the Canadian Government issues travel advisory advising Canadians to avoid travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary, you may be eligible for trip cancellation or trip interruption benefits.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can also help protect you in case of emergencies back home in Canada. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement (subject to plan limits) of your prepaid, unused hotel expenses or airfare that you can no longer use.

Tips for travelling to Nepal from Canada

As much as you may have planned each detail of your Nepalese adventure, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to check out the Canadian government’s safety warnings for Nepal before you leave. Up-to-date warnings-- including weather advisories and political situations-- will be listed on the website.

It’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens. Learning a few Nepalese phrases will go a long way too.

Finally, we recommend checking out our travel tips for Nepal, to help prepare you with some basic etiquette to respect local culture. You may also want to read up on some extraordinary experiences for some inspiration and read our packing list tips, to make sure you’re prepared for your trek.

Travel Insurance for Trip Delays

How travel insurance for Canadians may assist during trip delays.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

You’ve been eagerly awaiting your trip to Mexico for months - and the day is finally here. You’re so ready to be hiking through Copper Canyon, but your outbound flight from Toronto has other plans. What happens if a storm rolls in and you’re not able to leave until the following day?

Unfortunately, there are incidents beyond your control that can cause trip delays. While it’s a huge bummer, having a good travel insurance plan could help get your trip back on track.

What does trip delay insurance cover?

If something happens to delay your trip, there’s a chance you could be stuck with some unexpected costs. Most of us don’t factor these additional expenses into our travel budgets, but that’s where travel insurance may come in handy.

The trip delay coverage that’s included in your travel insurance policy could reimburse you for unanticipated costs like meals, hotel accommodations, taxi fares, and essential phone calls if you suffer a travel delay caused by a covered reason. Some of the situations that may be covered by trip delay insurance include:

  • Your flight with a common carrier is cancelled or delayed for at least 3 hours because of inclement weather.
  • You, your travel companion, or one of your immediate family members develops an unexpected emergency medical condition.
  • A strike is announced and it interferes with the normal departure and arrival of your common carrier.
  • The Canadian government issues an advisory against travel to a destination, country or region listed on your itinerary (This does not apply to advisories issued due to epidemic or pandemic.)

World Nomads offers two travel insurance options for Canadian residents - the Standard and Explorer plans. The Explorer plan costs more but has higher limits and sub-limits of coverage. We encourage you to check out both plans side by side when you get a quote so that you can determine the best travel insurance plan for your needs. If you have any questions, contact our team and they will be happy to assist.

What's the difference between trip delay and trip interruption?

Your travel insurance plan from World Nomads includes coverage for trip interruption and trip delay. Both offer travel insurance benefits for covered losses that happen on or after your trip start date or that occurs on or before your return date. Trip interruption benefits may provide reimbursement for your unused, prepaid, non-refundable, trip arrangements as well as provide reimbursement for additional transportation expenses you may incur if your trip is interrupted due to a covered risk.

Trip delay coverage provides a subsistence allowance for commercial accommodations and meals, essential telephone calls, and taxi fares, up to a daily maximum, which you may incur in the event your trip is delayed due to a covered risk.

For example, trip delay coverage may help when your arrival at a destination is delayed, but trip interruption coverage could assist if something happens in the middle of your trip and you’re unable to continue your trip as planned.

What's not covered under trip delay

While a good travel insurance plan can cover several things, there are some things that aren’t covered. If your plane takes off without you because you overslept, your trip is going to be delayed. Travel insurance won’t cover you forgetting to set your alarm though. Some other things that wouldn’t be covered include:

  • Delays of less than 3 hours. Are they inconvenient? Yes. But if your flight is delayed a couple hours, it’s not going to totally ruin your trip. Just stroll over to the airport bookshop and check out the latest best-sellers. Besides - you’ll need a good book for those lazy days at your beachside resort, right?
  • Reimbursement for expenses above the per-day and maximum benefit. While travel insurance could reimburse you for things like unexpected meals and hotel accommodations that are a result of your trip delay, this isn’t an open invitation to live lavishly. If you decide to book the luxury hotel and have a fancy dinner, just remember that you’ll still only be reimbursed based on your per-day and maximum benefits.
  • Waiting too long to apply for your passport or visa. It’s up to you to allow ample time for your passport or visa to be processed. If your trip is delayed because your application was submitted late, you won’t be covered. World Nomads travel insurance does not provide any reimbursement for losses incurred due to a travel visa or passport not being issued due to a late application or that has been previously refused.

How to file a claim if your trip is delayed

Hopefully your travels will be flawless and you’ll never have to deal with this part. If you do need to make a claim though, it’s important to know what to do.

  • First and foremost, make sure you contact us within 24 hours of becoming aware of a trip delay.
  • You can then log in to your member account online and start a claim. If you didn’t create one previously, you can still create an account.
  • Try to cancel unused portions of your trip immediately, and attempt to recoup prepaid, unused expenses from your travel providers. For example, if your delay is caused by your airline, you’ll first want to check with them to see if they can provide hotel and meal vouchers.
  • Make sure you save all documentation that could be needed for your claim. If your flight is delayed, ask the airline for documentation that lists the original and revised departure times, as well as the cause of the delay. Also don’t forget to save all receipts for your unexpected out-of-pocket expenses.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us

What else is covered by travel insurance?

In addition to trip delay and trip interruption coverage, travel insurance may help with several other unexpected situations you may encounter on your trip. For Canadian residents, World Nomads may also offer coverage for:

  • Adventure Activities:  World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Canadian residents. Level 1 activities like golf and racquetball are automatically covered but will still need to be listed when you purchase your policy. You’ll need to pay an additional premium to be covered for Level 2 and Level 3 activities like spelunking and hang gliding. If you’re participating in an activity that isn’t listed in your policy wording, contact us to make sure you’re covered. You won’t be able to add or remove activities after you make your purchase, so make sure you add them all when you purchase your policy.
  • Emergency Medical Coverage: If you get sick or injured on your trip, travel medical insurance could assist with reimbursement for things like ambulance transportation, prescription medication prescribed to treat your emergency medical condition, or a hospital stay. You’ll still need to have a Government Health Insurance Plan in your home province while you’re on your trip though. If you don’t, your total limit for all emergency medical expenses during your trip is limited to CAD $40,000.
  • Emergency Evacuation: If you suffer a medical emergency and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team or your treating Physician recommends that you return to your home province in Canada to get medical care, the emergency evacuation and repatriation coverage that’s included in your travel insurance may cover the costs to get you there.
  • Baggage Insurance: If the airline loses your bag, baggage protection may help provide reimbursement to replace your belongings, subject to depreciation. If your baggage is delayed by an airline or ground carrier for more than 12 hours while on the way to your destination, you may also be reimbursed for toiletries and a change of clothes until you’re reunited with your bag.

Travel Insurance for Indonesia

Everything you need to know about Indonesia, a world where ancient temples coexist with bustling cities.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Indonesia’s the world's largest archipelago to form a single state – where emerald jungles meet sprawling rice terraces and volcanic landscapes. From Yogyakarta's vibrant streets to the Gili islands' serene shores, Indonesia’s a tapestry of diverse experiences waiting to be discovered. But, with such adventures comes the unexpected, which is why you may consider packing some travel insurance before setting off to wander Jakarta’s markets, surf Bali's waves, or trek Sumatra's lush trails.

What’s covered

At World Nomads, we try to keep insurance simple so you can focus on enjoying your time abroad. We offer two insurance plans: Standard and Explorer – our Standard Plan offers a base level of coverage, and our Explorer Plan offers coverage with more benefits and higher limits.

Depending on your Country of Residence, your travel insurance plan can offer cover for:

  • Delayed, lost, or stolen baggage and personal effects: Heading to Indonesia with checked bags? There's a slim chance they might go on an unplanned tour. No sweat – our delay benefits can cover essential items (think basic clothing and toiletries) until your baggage finds its way back to you. And if your gear’s lost or pinched? We’re here to help (after you’ve gone through other necessary channels first). Want to know more about World Nomads travel insurance cover for baggage and personal effects? We have an entire article here.
  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption: World Nomads travel insurance for trip interruption might have you covered for unexpected trip cancellations to Indonesia – think family emergencies or a doctor-advised travel halt. On the road and need to head back home early? Our policy could cover your return and any non-refundable costs. Just remember, keep those receipts and docs for any claims!
  • Overseas medical emergencies and hospital expenses: No one plans to go to Bali and get Bali Belly, yet…we all know it happens. Problem is, your usual health insurance may not cover you abroad, and medical expenses can be costly. Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer overseas medical travel insurance coverage.
  • Cover for 150+ adventure sports and activities: If you’re a fan of getting the adrenaline pumping while holidaying abroad, then Indonesia’s got the goods for you. Diving in Komodo Park, or jungle trekking in Borneo? You may be covered. With World Nomads, you're covered for over 150 adventure sports and activities. But, before you dive into Indonesia's natural wonders, make sure to check your policy to ensure your action-seeking pursuits are included.

Whether you're temple-hopping in Bali or diving in Raja Ampat, choosing the right level of coverage is key. Read the policy wording, browse the World Nomads’ Help Center, or contact our customer service team to see if what you’re planning to do is covered under your plan.

Need a quote? You can get one online, before you leave your country of residence or when you’re already in Indonesia.

What’s not covered

Remember, travel insurance isn't a catch-all safety net. Our goal at World Nomads is to be there for you when you need us most, but there are a few things that fall outside of our policies:

  • Off the list activities and sports: If it's not in our policy wording or you haven't opted for that extra cover, those adventurous pursuits aren't covered.
  • Doctor's orders: Ignoring advice from your doctor or our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team? That's a no-go for coverage.
  • Valuables on the loose: Items that get lost, stolen, or damaged because they were left unwatched? We can't cover those.
  • Risky business: Taking unnecessary risks, breaking local laws, or misbehaving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol? It’s not only dumb, it’s also not covered.
  • Unclaimed expenses: If you haven't tried to get back costs from other sources like carriers or booking agents, we can't step in.
  • Change of heart: Decided not to travel? That's a personal choice we can't cover.

This is just a quick rundown. To really get into the nitty-gritty of what's covered (and what's not), give your policy wording a thorough read. It's the best way to know exactly where you stand with your travel insurance. Still not sure? Contact us. We’re happy to help.

What to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

So, you’re stuck at the airport, and your travel plans are suddenly up in the air (pun intended). Whether your flight’s been delayed, cancelled, or you’ve missed your connection, it’s a frustrating experience.

As an EU traveller, you have certain rights, and your airline should be your first stop for assistance. But don’t forget, your travel insurance might offer additional perks - like access to airport lounges through SmartDelay™ - making the wait a bit more bearable (perhaps even enjoyable). Grab a beverage and read on to discover how to make the best of a bad situation and keep your journey on track.

Step 1: Stay calm and gather information

Take a deep breath and try not to panic. Flight disruptions happen, and you'll get through this.

  • Check the airport screens (if you’re already there) or your airline's mobile app for real-time updates on your flight status.
  • If you can't find any information, head to the airline's customer service desk or call their helpline. Get up to speed and stay informed.

Travelers tip: it’s a great idea to download your airline’s app before you leave home, because let’s face it, no one likes having to stand in chaotic situations, trying to download and register for apps in moments of stress. If the app is already on your phone, you can access the information you need, as soon as you know you have flight issues.

Step 2: Know your rights

  • European airlines are bound by various regulations, including the European Union's Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, commonly known as EU261.
  • This regulation outlines the rights of air passengers in the event of flight disruptions, empowering us with clear entitlements and potential compensation.
  • According to this regulation, you may be entitled to compensation, care, and assistance depending on the circumstances of your delay or cancellation.
  • Compensation amounts can vary based on the length of the delay, distance of the flight, and whether the disruption was within the airline's control.

Traveler tip: When your flight is canceled or you miss a connection, it’s natural to want to immediately book a new flight. But take a breath and hold off. Your airline might automatically rebook you on the next available flight—often at no extra cost. Before making any decisions, check your airline’s app or speak to their customer service. Buying a new ticket in haste might mean you’re left paying out of pocket, as airlines typically won’t reimburse you for flights purchased independently, and travel insurance may only cover specific situations. Patience can save you both money and stress.

Step 3: Seek compensation and assistance

  • If your flight is cancelled or delayed for more than three hours, and the airline is responsible for the disruption, you may be entitled to compensation.
  • Approach the airline's customer service desk and request the necessary forms to file a claim for compensation. Alternatively, you can request a refund form online through the airline’s website.
  • Be sure to collect any relevant documentation, such as boarding passes and receipts for additional expenses incurred due to the delay or cancellation.

Travelers tip: if your airline offers you a reasonable alternative, take it. Should you need to make a travel insurance claim later, you’ll need to show that you first tried to get reimbursed by the airline or your travel provider. Keep all the proof handy—it’ll make your claim process smoother.

Step 4: Make alternate arrangements

  • Your airline is legally bound to provide you with alternative travel arrangements in the event of a cancellation.
  • Depending on the length of the delay or cancellation, you might need to make new travel arrangements.
  • If your flight is delayed overnight or cancelled, the airline should provide you with accommodation, meals, and transportation if needed.
  • If the airline doesn't provide these services, keep all receipts and consider claiming these expenses as part of your compensation (from the airline). If the airline’s unable to provide meal or hotel vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of out-of-pocket meal and lodging expenses under your trip delay benefit. You’ll need written confirmation from your airline that includes:
  • the reason for the delay
  • scheduled departure and return times
  • actual departure and return times

Traveler tip: getting to the airport early is key. Aim for at least two hours for domestic flights and three for international ones—but double-check with your airline for the latest advice. This way, you’ll breeze through security with time to spare, keeping your travel day stress-free.

Step 5: Document everything

  • Keep a record of all communication with the airline, including names, dates, and times of conversations or emails.
  • Take photos or screenshots of any relevant information, such as flight status screens or announcements.
  • These records will be valuable if you need to escalate your claim or seek legal advice.

Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.

Step 6: Check your travel insurance

Travel insurance may be able to step in where your airline falls short. Here are some situations where travel insurance may be able to provide some relief.

World Nomads offers a Standard Plan and an Explorer Plan, which have different per-day and maximum benefit limits. For EU travellers, who’ve purchased an Explorer Plan, World Nomads may offer the following coverage:

  • If an airline refused to provide meal or lodging vouchers, you may be able to claim for reimbursement of those expenses after a delay of 12 or more hours. The Explorer Plan allows for up to €200 (€50 each 12 hours, per person) for additional accommodation and meals, and up to €1,000 for additional transport.
  • If your delayed or cancelled flight caused you to miss pre-paid accommodation or tours, you may be able to claim reimbursement for those unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs.
  • If you’re stuck overnight and your airline can’t deliver your checked baggage for more than 24 hours, you can claim for reimbursement of essential toiletries and a change of clothes under your baggage insurance benefits.

Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits. Read your chosen plan thoroughly to understand the benefit limits.

What's excluded under your travel insurance policy?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Exclusions include, but are not limited to:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions. You can read more about pre-existing medical conditions here.
  • You running late, getting stuck in traffic or a long security line and missing your flight.
  • Purchase of a new flight because you didn’t want to wait to be rebooked by your airline.
  • Luxury hotel suites and the most expensive thing on the menu. Travel insurance is meant to cover reasonable out-of-pocket expenses if you’re delayed.
  • Flight delays of less than 12hours.
  • Baggage delays of less than 24 hours.
  • Expenses that have been reimbursed by your airline.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel coverage, please contact us for help.

What to do if your flight is delayed or cancelled

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Planning a getaway and looking forward to some well-deserved travel outside of Ireland? Whether you're heading to the sun-soaked beaches of Spain or exploring the bustling streets of New York, flight delays can throw a wrench in your plans.

But don’t let a delayed flight ruin your trip. With World Nomads' travel insurance, you can relax knowing you're covered. Plus, with features like SmartDelay™, you can turn those unexpected hold-ups into a chance to unwind in style.

Step 1: Stay calm and gather information

Flight delays happen—don’t panic. Start by checking the airport screens or your airline’s app for real-time updates. If there’s no information available, head to the airline’s customer service desk or call their helpline to get the latest status.

As a traveller from Ireland, you’re protected under European Union regulations like EU261, which outline passenger rights when flights are delayed or cancelled. Depending on the circumstances, you could be entitled to compensation, meals, accommodation, or even refunds.

  • If your flight is delayed for more than three hours, and the airline is responsible, you may be eligible for compensation. Approach the airline’s customer service desk to request forms for a compensation claim or check their website. Be sure to collect any relevant documentation, such as boarding passes and receipts for additional expenses incurred due to the delay or cancellation.

In the event of a cancellation, your airline must provide alternative travel arrangements. For lengthy delays, this could include accommodation, meals, and transportation.

If the airline doesn't provide these services, keep all receipts and consider claiming these expenses as part of your compensation (from the airline).

Keep records of all your interactions with the airline—note names, dates, and times of conversations. Take photos or screenshot of flight status screens, announcements, or other relevant information.

Traveller tip: delays and cancellations happen more often than we’d like, so it’s best to be prepared. Wear comfy clothes, pack some snacks, and have your favourite book, show, or playlist ready to keep you entertained while you wait.

Step 6: Check your travel insurance

If you’re airline falls short, travel insurance may help cover additional costs. With World Nomads’ Standard and Explorer Plans, you may be eligible for coverage in a range of situations, from delayed flights to lost baggage.

For example, the Explorer Plan may cover:

Travel Insurance for Nepal

What you need to know when visiting the roof of the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Nepal is a small country that packs a big punch. Home to the majestic Himalayas and Everest Base Camp trek, there’s no shortage of things to do and see. Before traveling to the Roof of the World, consider packing travel insurance.

What’s covered in Nepal

Depending on your country of residence and the plan you choose, our policies can protect you up to policy limits for benefits including:

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs. It’s important to note that all plans are different depending on your country of residence and the plan that you’ve selected and may require upgrades for cover to apply.

Why should I consider travel insurance for a trip to Nepal

Travel insurance could help if you land in Pokhara but your baggage doesn’t, if your trek is delayed due to extreme weather, or if you suffer altitude sickness and need to be evacuated.

Adventuring in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for injuries and accidents for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences whether you’re on jungle safari in Chitwan National Park or white-water rafting the Bhote Koshi. Be sure to specify the activities you intend to do when you purchase your policy, as you can’t add them afterwards.

Hiking in Nepal

Our policies offer cover for high altitude hiking, trekking and camping up to 6,000 metres including Base Camp and Annapurna. We can also cover medical evacuation if medically necessary. Keep in mind that you may require a policy upgrade to be covered.

Backpacking in Nepal

With plenty of affordable accommodation, delicious food and rich culture, Nepal is a backpacker's dream. Our policies may cover you if your passport is stolen whilst browsing Asan market, for travel disruption or if your trip is cancelled.

What to look out for when traveling around Nepal

Keep your valuables safe

Remember to remain vigilant and keep your valuables in sight when exploring Kathmandu and beyond. Our policies may cover theft if your valuables are stolen (depending on your country of residence and up to policy limits). We can also cover high-value items with an upgrade.

Staying healthy and safe in Nepal

If you get food poisoning from a dodgy dal or you’re injured while trekking, our policies can cover you for emergency medical treatment. We can even bring you home for treatment if required.

Travel disruptions in Nepal

Nepal's roads, flights, and weather can be unpredictable. If your trekking adventure is cancelled due to a natural catastrophe, or your flights are delayed due to an unforeseen event our policies can cover you.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. There are some things we can’t cover, including, but not limited to:

  • Trekking/camping over 6,000 metres in elevation, mountaineering, and ice climbing
  • Participation in any adventure sports activities where you don’t purchase the appropriate level upgrade, or where it is specifically excluded
  • Existing medical conditions
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to U.S. Department of State ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Unsupervised baggage or personal items
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs or acting illegally.

Always check the terms and conditions of your policy. If you’re not sure about anything or have any questions, contact us.

Travel insurance and safety tips when visiting Nepal

Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and milder weather, perfect for cultural sightseeing and adventure activities.
  • Use licensed guides and porters: They are trained to handle emergencies and know the terrain and conditions.
  • Be prepared for altitude sickness: Altitude sickness is a real possibility in Nepal. Read about how to handle altitude sickness while trekking.
  • Keep copies of all receipts, tickets, paperwork: you’ll need to provide these in the event of a claim.
