Ready to explore the world from a kayak or go rafting in the great outdoors? Whether you’re planning to paddle lakes, beaches or rivers, you may need travel insurance for unexpected accidents.

What's covered

If you are injured during your kayaking or rafting adventure, World Nomads travel insurance can provide you with coverage for your emergency medical expenses. Under our Adventure Sports Coverage, you are automatically covered to participate in various adventure sports and activities.

When you get a travel insurance quote for your kayaking or rafting trip, you need to double-check the Adventure Sports & Activities roster. The following activities have coverage under our plans:

  • Kayaking on inland and coastal waters, grades 1-5, including white water and sea kayaking
  • White water rafting on inland and coastal waters within three nautical miles, grades 1-
  • Black water rafting (cave tubing), grades 1-5
  • River boarding and hydrospeeding, grades 1-5.

Other sports and activities can also be covered our plans. You will need to purchase an upgrade for an additional premium depending on the activity you choose, such as:

  • Kayaking on inland and coastal waters, including sea kayaking
  • Sea kayaking beyond three nautical miles

You must upgrade your adventure sport coverage when you initially purchase your policy for coverage to apply on your trip. You won’t be able to make any changes once your trip starts.

International River Grading

You will note that several activity options above mention international river grades. These river grades can be described as:

  • Class 1: Easy
  • Class 2: Novice
  • Class 3: Intermediate
  • Class 4: Advanced
  • Class 5: Expert
  • Class 6: Extreme and Exploratory Rapids
(We can't insure you for this level of kayaking or rafting)

Before you  head down the river or rapids, always check to see what the rating is to ensure that the coverage you have purchased will apply when participating in the activity. Read more about the International River Grading System from the American Whitewater Association.

What's not covered

World Nomads won't insure you for:

  • Kayaking/rafting down rivers of a Class 6 variety: extreme and exploratory rapids.
  • Any competitions or racing.
  • Kayaking more than 60 miles from a safe haven.

See the list of International River Grades above.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.
