Travel Insurance for health emergencies

Travel insurance is there to help you when you need it most. If you've been involved in an accident or you've fallen ill and need medical care, our travel insurance policies can help patch you up and get you back on the road.

Just keep in mind that our policies are travel insurance policies not health insurance policies, and many policies don't cover existing medical conditions. Make sure you read through your policy carefully to see how and if you can be covered.

So this isn't a health insurance plan?

No, it's a travel insurance policy. It's there for overseas unexpected medical emergencies. It's not designed to cover cover ongoing illness, routine check-ups or treatment overseas, or any treatment when you get home.

What does travel insurance cover if I'm sick or injured?

If you’re injured in an accident or suddenly become ill while travelling, you can be covered for overseas emergency medical treatment including:

  • Hospitalisation.
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment.
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Prescribed medicines.
  • Ambulances.
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary.

We also have 24/7 Emergency Assistance teams who can guide you to the nearest hospital, arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to the medical facility, and give support to your family. Coverage may depend on your past medical history, what's happened to you and any other conditions, limits or exclusions of cover as described in your policy.

Is cover for Coronavirus available?

World Nomads can offer benefits for medical issues related to Coronavirus (COVID-19). If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and it’s not considered an ‘existing medical condition’ under our policy, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care;
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation;
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

In addition, our Explorer Plan also has a Coronavirus Travel Costs benefit for certain events. You can check out our Coronavirus cover article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims for overseas medical expenses we see where there's no cover include:

  • If you're intoxicated as a result of taking drugs or alcohol.
  • Where you've been acting recklessly.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home to New Zealand (that's what your health insurance or national health coverage at home is designed to do).
  • Any existing medical conditions.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.

For more information check out our articles on overseas medical coverage and adventure sports coverage.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Cramps and body explosions in India.

I had been sick in India for about a month with ongoing symptoms including diahorrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, fever, loss of appetite etc. Once we had arrived in Turkey I had an attack during the night at our Hostel. I was vomiting, had diahorrhea and intense stomach cramping so my boyfriend and I thought it was best to head to a hospital. Due to my condition I could not walk, it was also 2am/3am and we had no other method of getting to a hospital other than arranging for the hospital to send an ambulance to pick me up. Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctors undertook an examination of me and my conditions and due to severe dehydration they gave me a drip to restore my fluids. To find out what the causation of my symptoms were, they conducted tests on my blood and stool. The doctor also prescribed me medication to treat both my symptoms and illness. These included creams and also antibiotics.

Looking for comprehensive travel insurance to cover your (or your child’s) adventure overseas? World Nomads has designed our travel insurance cover with the adventurous in mind and covers many activities up-front.

Are you looking for comprehensive travel insurance?

While we won't say our travel insurance is comprehensive (because it doesn't cover everything), our travellers get up to all sorts of different things, so we offer two levels of cover - Standard and Explorer - with options to include extra activities to cover both the more, and less, adventurous.

As you'd expect, every policy is different and has multiple benefits. However, all of them include:

You also have access to World Nomads’ community of like-minded travellers, language guides, safety information, travel guides and more.

There are limits, conditions and exclusions which apply, so be sure to read the policy wording before you buy a policy.

What's not covered?

If you put yourself in danger then we won’t cover you. This includes going to places the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence tells you not to, doing activities that you’re not qualified for or are too dangerous. We have a list of covered activities in our policies and if you’re not sure, give us a call and we’ll let you know if we’ll cover it or not.

Other things we won’t cover include:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • Drugs or alcohol abuse
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (however if you're pregnant, read the policy wording to understand cover that's available, including for 'complications of pregnancy')

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn't covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Looking for travel insurance that won’t break the bank?

World Nomads knows our travellers understand why a good travel insurance policy is important… but would really rather spend their money on a hotel upgrade or first class train tickets.

That’s why we’ve got a little secret we’re going to let you in on… from time to time World Nomads offers travellers a promotional 5% discount when they purchase a World Nomads policy.

How do I get a discount on my travel insurance?

If you’re a first time traveller contact our customer service teams who may be able to advise you if there is a Save Promo code available to get you a discount on your policy.

As a returning World Nomads traveller, if you log into your World Nomads membership you’ll get a discount as a thank you for your continuing loyalty.

Due to Financial laws in North America this offer is not available to residents of Canada and the United States.

What’s covered by travel insurance

World Nomads covers on all our policies those things our travellers tell us are most important… and which they most frequently access. This includes:

In addition we cover more than 150 activities and events depending on your policy. Our travellers also have access to an online community forum, travel guides, safety tips and destination videos.

What’s not covered

There’s a number of other exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. These include:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • If you've taken drugs or alcohol
  • Where you've been acting in a reckless manner
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions per the policy wording terms and conditions (with exceptions for pregnant mothers in some cases)
  • Ongoing treatment at home

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

For when you’re leaving on a jet plane and don’t know when you’ll be back.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

If you’re jetting off on an adventure with no end date in sight, you can still buy World Nomads travel insurance. Whether you’re thinking of being overseas for a few days, weeks, or a few months, one way travel insurance can help safeguard your adventure — even without a return ticket.

What’s covered with one way travel insurance

When you buy travel insurance with World Nomads, you have cover available for those common events that have a way of dampening an otherwise-good trip, such as:

  • Trip delay, interruption, and flight delays
  • Trip cancelation
  • Overseas emergency medical insurance
  • Hospitalization if you or a member of your traveling party suffer injury or illness
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage and valuables cover
  • Snow sports optional cover
  • Adventure activities and sports cover (we offer cover for more than 150 activities)
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation when necessary

And of course, single trip cover also provides access to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team who can help you find a doctor or transport you to a medical facility, or if you or a member of your travel party become sick or injured.

It’s important to note that policy cover may vary depending on your Country of Residence and the travel insurance plan you choose — whether you’re planning a one way trip or return trip. So, it’s a good idea to do some research on where you’re going, so you can pick a policy that’s best for you.

What you need to know if you plan to travel on a one way ticket

One way travel insurance offers similar coverage to a policy taken out for a return trip. The main difference with single trip cover comes down to your flight home.

If you find yourself needing to return home for a covered reason, the cost you would have normally paid for an Economy Class airfare (at the carrier’s regular rate or actual cost incurred) will be deducted from your total claim.

What’s not covered when you travel one way

Overseas travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything and there are some things we simply don’t cover. Some of the things not covered when you travel one way include:

  • Your flight home
  • Cancelation expenses if you simply change your mind and decide not to travel
  • If you become injured while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Treatment for a condition, illness, or injury that is considered a non-emergency and can wait until your return home to your County of Residence
  • Pre-existing conditions

It’s always a good idea to read the Policy Wording carefully and check the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions when you buy travel insurance (or anything else for that matter!) so you have a good understanding of what is and isn’t covered for one way travel insurance.

Handy travel tips for one way trips

Select the plan that’s right for your one way trip

We offer two levels of cover, Standard and Explorer. Each plan comes with different benefit limits and sub limits. Take the time to consider which is the best option for your travel plans, so you clearly understand what’s included in the level of cover you select for your one way trip.

Working holidays

Many travelers who buy one way travel insurance are planning to move to another country for a working holiday for the foreseeable future. Our single trip cover is designed to cover you for up to 12 months, whether that means traveling somewhere like Australia for a year-long working holiday or an extended break in Europe.

And if you’re nearing the end-date of your trip and decide to extend your stay, you should consider extending your travel insurance too.

Buy while abroad

Already left? With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance even after you’ve left home. Get a quick quote and easily buy while abroad. If you buy a policy while already overseas there is a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this waiting period.

Be sure to check your Policy Wording for the complete list of what’s covered and what isn’t covered depending on your Country of Residence.

Need to know more?

The World Nomads team is here to help. Get in touch if you’re unsure what your next step should be and we can help get you there, whether that means deciding which policy is best for your trip, how to buy while abroad, or how to make a claim.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All of the information we provide is a brief summary. Phone theft.

I was sitting on the grass in the Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona talking with some friends when a man crouched down next to me and tried to offer me narcotics. He had a jacket with him which he had set on the ground next to him and I later realised it covered my bag which was sitting next to me. I repeatedly refused to buy anything and told him to leave but he wouldn't go away. He finally left. I looked into my bag about 10 min later and realised he had stolen the phone out of my bag.

What does long term travel insurance cover?

We know there’s nothing more exciting than heading overseas with a ticket in your back pocket. So we designed our policies to cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences including casual bar work, skiing, zorbing and much more.

Our policies come with loads of benefits depending on the policy that you buy, but all of them cover:

What is the longest duration travel insurance can cover?

The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months (365 days) from the start date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

How do I buy more travel insurance cover?

You can buy more cover, even if you’re already on the road. Generally cover can be purchased for up to a year, but if you want to extend your trip beyond one year, you just need to jump online to get a quote

You can’t upgrade your policy type once you’ve departed and started your holiday, so you’ll have to buy a new policy if you need more coverage. That’s why it’s critical you select the right level of cover up front.

Please note: if you plan to extend your policy you should do so several days before it expires, due to time differences and possible administrative delays. If your policy is extended, we will issue you with an updated Certificate of Insurance.

What’s not covered on long term travel insurance?

There’s a number of other exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. Exclusions include but aren't limited to:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • If you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Ongoing medical treatment at home

It’s important to remember that World Nomads offers travel insurance… not private health/medical insurance. That means our policies won’t cover you for pre-existing medical conditions or ongoing medical care.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are terms, limits, conditions and exclusions that may apply. Always read your policy wording carefully before you buy and make sure it’s right for you. If you have more questions get in touch.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Pre-existing Conditions?

Most of our policies don’t cover pre-existing conditions, so don’t assume you’re covered.

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 18 May 2022, please check the Policy Document provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased on or from 18 May 2022 please see below.

If you're worried about how your existing medical condition can affect your trip, make sure you read the policy when you get a quote so there are no surprises.

Existing medical conditions and World Nomads travel insurance

The World Nomads policies for New Zealand residents cover for more than 40 existing medical conditions which are specifically mentioned in the policy, where you meet all criteria for that condition. Terms and conditions and benefit limits apply. For travellers whose conditions aren't listed, or where all criteria are not met, there is no cover.

The good news for New Zealand residents is not only are you covered in some circumstances if you have existing medical conditions that meets the criteria for automatic cover, but you can also be covered in relation to existing medical conditions of a member of your travelling party and your close relatives who are not listed on your policy. This includes cover for:

  • Pre-trip cancellation expenses
  • Doctor’s visits overseas
  • Hospitalisation overseas
  • Medication overseas
  • Costs to get you home by air if medically necessary.

There is a policy limit for all claims combined that relate to the existing medical condition of a close relative or member of your travelling party. All policies exclude cover for existing medical conditions, so make sure you read through your policy when you go to get a quote.

What's not covered by World Nomads travel insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. The main things that aren’t covered are:

  • Existing medical conditions unless specifically mentioned in the policy and where all criteria is met.
  • Any medical expenses in New Zealand, or once you return home.
  • Any existing medical condition you had in previous periods of insurance, unless it meetes the criteria for automatic cover.
  • The sickness you caught overseas, right before you remembered to buy a policy.

This isn't a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions that apply, so for more information check out our article on existing medical conditions.

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, so make sure you’re careful with your planning and you read the Policy Document to make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not, as well as the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions. If you have any questions get in touch

If your existing medical condition isn't covered and you're not worried about covering it, you can still purchase a policy online through World Nomads.

Just be aware there's no cover for any claim made as a result of this condition.

Mosquitos.

Upon arrival to Spain on the 4th of April I had been displaying fever, headache, exhaustion and dizziness. This lasted for a week, so I went to the doctor at the hospital in Malaga, Andalucia where they gave me a consultation and blood test showing results that indicated a mosquito-bourne virus which makes sense as I arrived in Europe from Mexico a week before the symptoms started.

How do I buy travel insurance cover for longer?

You can buy cover for longer, even if you’re already on the road. Cover on World Nomads policy is available for up to one year, but if you want to extend your Single Trip beyond one year, you just need to jump online to get a quote for a new policy.

Be sure to revisit the eligibility criteria and key definitions such as ‘home’, as this and other terms and conditions have recently changed. We regularly review and change our policies and the cover we offer, so be sure that the cover still meets your needs each time you purchase.

You can’t upgrade your policy type once you’ve departed and started your holiday, so you’ll have to buy a new policy if you need more coverage. That’s why it’s critical you select the right level of cover up front.

We can however help you start on your road to recovery from injuries or illness incurred during your travels and ensure your safe arrival home.

Severed Nerve

I was opening a bag of potatoes with a knife. The knife slipped and cut the 2nd (index) finger on my left hand. I attended the local emergency department in Aix-en-Provence at no charge, they referred me to Clinique Axium the following day. I underwent micro surgery to repair the ulnar nerve in my finger which I had partially severed (50%). Up until this time I was unaware that I had injured the nerve and definitely wasn't aware that I would require surgery. This operation was conducted under local anaesthetic.. I have had 2 follow up appointments at the Clinique the first of which was to issue a prescription to enable my dressings to be changed along with having a specialised splint made to keep my finger in a bent position to enable healing.
