Am I covered by travel insurance if I'm scuba diving?

Your World Nomads travel insurance includes coverage for scuba dives and snorkelling.

What’s covered

To be covered, don’t forget that among other things, you must hold a valid SCUBA license or be diving under the supervision of a licensed diving instructor. Activities covered under both Standard and Explorer plans include:

  • Scuba diving to 165 feet.
  • Unqualified, learn-to-dive courses and discover dives with a qualified instructor.
  • Snorkelling.

Activities covered only by the Explorer plan include:

  • Diving instructor or guide (paid or volunteer) up to 165 feet.
  • Cavern or cave diving up to 165 feet.
  • Shark cage diving up to 165 feet.
  • Commercial scuba diving up to 165 feet.
  • Cliff diving.

For the full list of scuba diving activities, check out our  Activities, Sports and Adventure page.

How it works

If you become seriously ill or injured while diving and need urgent medical assistance, World Nomads may cover:

  • Evacuation if it’s urgent and a necessary part of your treatment (by the most appropriate means including helicopter when and available).
  • Emergency medical expenses for treatment at the hospital or by a doctor at the local medical center.
  • Repatriation  If you get into a fatal accident, your remains can be sent back home.
  • Gear coverage: Sporting equipment may be covered when stolen or if checked-into your carrier, lost or damaged. This coverage is secondary to any coverage provided by your transportation carrier.

You must contact the 24/7  Emergency Assistance team prior to seeing treatment.

What’s not covered

Scuba diving encompasses a reasonably large body of activities, so it’s important to read your travel insurance policy carefully. A few of the things that your plan may not cover include:

  • Any form of diving over 165 feet.
  • Competition diving.

This is a summary only. It does not include all terms, conditions and exclusions of the plans described. Please refer to the actual plans for complete details of coverage and exclusions.
