Get covered by World Nomads, even if you're already on the road
As featured in:
We know it can be easy to forget to buy travel insurance when planning a holiday. If you’ve left home without travel insurance or your policy is due to expire and you’re still on the road, you can still purchase travel insurance with World Nomads.
We’ve designed simple and flexible travel insurance so you can buy what you need, when you need it, even while travelling. If you forgot to buy a policy before you started your trip, are outside your home country without insurance, or your cover has ended but your trip hasn’t, you can buy a World Nomads policy 24/7 online.
If you buy a policy while traveling, waiting periods, conditions and restrictions on cover do apply.
You may have to wait 72 hours (waiting period) before any cover is activated, depending on when you purchase your policy as explained in ‘When cover starts & ends’ in your Policy Wording. This means certain benefits such as Cancelling Your Trip may not apply, as you’ve already left your country of residence.
Please note that your country of residence will determine the laws, regulations and tax that apply.
Most policies can cover you straight away if you're injured in an accident after you buy a policy. Your Policy Wording will have full details to understand the cover, limits and exclusions.
Waiting periods apply

Physical and sexual assault aren't something you want to think about for your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks happen way too often to travelers. While some destinations have higher incidents than others, no destination is immune.
To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of some countries can see innocent victims imprisoned, so knowing what to do following an attack can be difficult.
Our Emergency assistance teams have extensive experience understanding and liasing with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.
If you’ve been assaulted overseas, all of World Nomads travel insurance policies have the following benefits which can help patch you up and get you on the road to recovery:
Depending on the policy you buy and your country of residence, there are limitations that will apply. So, it’s a good idea to do some research on where you’re going, so you can pick a policy that’s best for you.

If you pick a fight and end up coming out worse for wear, there's a pretty good chance you won't be covered because of needless risk and stupidity.
There may be specific terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that apply depending on what you'll be doing. Of course, always read the full terms, conditions limitations and exclusions in the plan you choose so there’ll be no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
It’s essential that you get in contact with our emergency assistance teams as soon as possible so that they can assess the situation according to location and local laws, and then triage accordingly

During my holiday in Sydney , Australia, I was physically assaulted by a man while jogging. The attacker approached me and severely punched me in a face. I fell on a ground and almost lost consciousness with blood coming out of my right eye and nose. I was laying on cement pathway crying and screaming for help. Shortly after I was seen by group of teenagers walking nearby and they ran to help me. Those people called ambulance and police. I was taken to hospital and had x-rays and other medical treatments provided. My right eye orbit was broken and I was advised by doctors to have a risky and complicated surgery on low eye orbit to prevent possible vision loss and other complications.

I was bitten by a tick in Sierra Nevada region on my trip in Colombia, and infected by borrelia. A doctor examined me and I have received treatment for borreliose with antibiotics and probiotics. However, as the brain fog and dizziness persisted even during continuing treatment, the emergency assistance team organised medical repatriation as it is not safe for me to travel with these symptoms.

This information is for New Zealand residents.
There's a lot of media around this, and there's a lot of allure in danger too. When everyone is saying something different about the risks of travel, it's hard to get a clear picture of what's going on. It also raises lots of questions about how insurance works.
If the event is unforeseen – which by their very nature terrorist attacks almost all are, you could be covered for:
In addition, we also have 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams who can assist you – keeping you informed, putting you in contact with consular officials, arranging medical care, and getting in touch with your family for you.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. We often see claims for terrorism that we have to decline because the New Zealand plans excludes them:
Also, we don't cover anything that happens because you made jokes about terrorism or bombs while standing in an airport security screening area or other high security environment. Those people do not have a sense of humour, and you won't be laughing when they reach for the latex gloves.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Learn how travel insurance could help if your luggage misses your flight.
As featured in:
So you've arrived at your destination and spent your first two hours on the ground watching a baggage carousel grow empty without ever coughing up your bags. This happens a lot. It's really annoying. Happily, there's someone to blame. That's the airline.
In every airport, there's a lost luggage counter where you can report your missing items. You’ll need to get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from that counter.
If you're luggage is delayed by more than 12 hours, our policies cover essential purchases (toothbrushes, deodorant, clean undies, etc.).
There are limits on the amount you can spend. So before you go shopping for a new wardrobe, check your policy carefully on the limits, conditions and exclusions which may apply before you buy.
If you need to make a claim, you'll also need to fill in all of the documentation required by the carrier and submit this with your receipts.
Delayed luggage once you're back home. You've now got access to your full wardrobe, so you shouldn't need anything from your bags. When you're shopping for essential purchases, think Walmart and the chemist, not high street fashion and designer labels.
Oh, and carry your prescribed medication and a spare prescription in your carry-on luggage. We don't cover a trip to the doctor for a new script or replacement meds.
Oh, and carry your medication and a spare prescription in your carry-on luggage. We may not cover a trip to the doctor for a new script or replacement meds unless these expenses are related to an existing medical condition we don’t cover.

Items that aren't covered if your bags are delayed:
I flew from Spain to Copenhagen via Brussels. When I arrived in Copenhagen my bag did not arrive with me. I made a claim with the airline and they said it would reach me in time before I fly out to Los Angeles. But my bag did not arrive in time. This claim is for delayed luggage over the period without clothing.

When your illness or injury stops you in your tracks & you have to get home for treatment.
As featured in:
When a condition is truly life-threatening and the local hospitals can't look after you, or if we decide you need to be bought home for further treatment, there's cover in World Nomads travel insurance policies to bring you home to recover. That can be anything from an air ambulance a private jet, hiring a doctor, a nurse, a pilot and a co-pilot, and flying you to a hospital where they can deal with your condition), to an upgrade.
If you’ve selected the policy for the activity you’re doing and we believe it’s medically necessary to bring you home for ongoing treatment, there’s cover in all of our policies for:
It's important to note that you need to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team before making any plans, regardless of what your treating doctor says. Our team are experts in this field, with the help of treating doctors the experienced members of the EA team can work out what's best for you... and, if you need to move, it can be prepaid so the money doesn't come out of your pocket.
First up, if we can, we'll use your existing ticket home. Date changes, and upgrades are often the most effective way to do this. You won't be able to claim that flight. Likewise, if we buy you a new flight, you can't claim for your unused flight home either.
Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims we see where there's no cover include:

I went to the supermarket. When I got inside I was feeling strange, - stomach pain, light headed, clammy, loss of sight and part of hearing, went outside to get some air, thinking maybe my blood sugar was low. I went inside and got one of the clerks to get me a juice. I sat down on the ground because I was feeling weak. The guy brought me the juice I had some, stood up to pay then passed out. I don’t remember hitting the ground, but woke up to people around me and somebody on the phone to the ambulance. I didn’t want them to call but they said I hit my head pretty hard that it bounced off the ground.

It's not something anyone wants to talk about, but fatal accidents and illnesses do happen. For those worst case scenarios, your family will need help and support; emotional, logistical and financial.
Our Emergency Assistance Team can help your loved ones get you home – they're available 24/7 for help, they have the expertise to handle some aspects of international bureaucracy such as helping out with the paper work and working with relevant government departments and the policy can help with the associated costs.
The priority of your loved ones will be to bring you home; we’ll be there to help take away the added stress of navigating overseas laws, different languages and formalities.
If you die overseas as the result of an accident or a sudden and unexpected illness, you may be covered for:
We also have access to some of the New Zealand Government's MFAT services, so for countries where the local laws are complex, we can call on some additional support.
Note: In case of death, the death certificate and a medical report must be included with any claim.
A lot of the exclusions to medical cover do also apply here, so take the time to read the policy. In the event of a fatal illness or injury, if we're not going to cover your medical expenses and you then pass away, there won't be any cover under this part of the policy either.
Some other events we do not cover are:

Overseas deaths are the most heartbreaking cases to help with. No one is ready to deal with the sudden death of a close relative overseas, let alone having to deal with the complex organisation and unexpected high costs. The World Nomads Emergency Assistance team can coordinate a local burial or bringing home loved ones with trusted partners on the ground, and ensure that families and friends are supported throughout such a difficult time.
