NOMADS TIP: For even more trip cancellation flexibility, check out the optional ‘Cancel for Any Reason’ benefit. It can be added to Explorer and Epic plans. Available at an additional cost for U.S. residents, except in New York.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need for my camping trip?

World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. Even if your main goal is to go camping, you’ll probably be doing other things like hiking also. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences when you purchase travel insurance coverage for camping. If you’re camping and hiking at a high elevation though, you’ll want to make sure to pick the correct plan based on your maximum altitude.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan, but includes travel insurance coverage for incidents while camping and hiking up to 19,685 feet/6,000 meters, including up to $125,000 in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This is for those that want to take their camping to new heights! It covers more activities, including camping and hiking up to 21,325 feet/6,500 meters. It also has higher limits of coverage for most benefits.
  • Epic Plan – This is for the true adventurers. It covers everything the Explorer plan covers, plus even more activities – including camping and hiking up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters. It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.
  • Annual Plan – Weekend warriors, digital nomads, world explorers… this plan is for you. Just buy once and stay protected all year. It includes travel insurance coverage for camping, as well as all of the other activities covered in the Standard Plan.

Do you offer travel insurance for summer camp?

Summer camp brings back such fond memories of our childhood, but we know from our own experience, accidents can happen. If you’re sending your children to summer camp, travel insurance benefits may help with a variety of unexpected situations, including injuries related to more than 250+ sports, activities and experiences such as swimming and archery.

If the camp is more than 100 miles away from your home, you can purchase a travel protection plan for your child that includes non-insurance services and travel insurance coverage for summer camp. If you have more than one child, you can even include them in the same plan.

Can I get travel insurance coverage for Everest Base Camp?

If you’re headed to Everest Base Camp, travel insurance coverage for Asia may help with a variety of situations – even while you’re hiking there. Travel insurance coverage for Everest Base Camp may also include benefits such as emergency medical evacuation. That may help if your condition is severe, acute, or life-threatening and adequate treatment is not available in your immediate area. (Subject to approval. Additional terms apply.) To avoid scam risks, you’ll want to contact the 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team before arranging your own evacuation. Before you purchase a travel protection plan that includes non-insurance services and travel insurance coverage for Everest Base Camp, review the four plans offered by World Nomads to choose the right one for you. Each includes maximum elevations for hiking and camping.

What may not be covered when on a camping trip?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • Unattended baggage, camping gear, or personal items
  • Not following ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued by the U.S. government prior to departure
  • Participation in activities not listed in our 250+ sports, activities and experiences.
  • Injuries incurred while intoxicated
  • Camping and hiking at heights over 26,247 feet/8,000 meters
  • Camping or traveling within 100 miles of your home

Top safety tips we recommend for your camping trip

  • Pay attention to the weather. Take a look at the forecast before you go, but since conditions can change quickly, always keep an eye on it while you’re camping.
  • Don’t leave unsecured food out, as that can attract wildlife. You can store it in your car, a bear-safe container, or a food storage locker.
  • Use insect repellent, but still check for ticks at least once a day when outdoors.
  • Keep campfires small and contained, and never leave them unattended.
  • Arrive at your campsite before dark to get everything set up.
  • Choose the right camping gear for your particular trip.
  • Don’t camp over 26,247 feet/8,000 meters since you may not be able to have camping travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services from World Nomads.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about cover for camping. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • Can camping be covered under World Nomads Travel Insurance?

Yes, camping may be covered under all four plans offered by World Nomads Travel Insurance. If you’re camping and hiking at a high elevation though, you’ll want to make sure to pick the correct plan based on your maximum altitude. The Standard and Annual Plans include travel insurance coverage for incidents while camping up to 19,685 feet/6,000 meters, the Explorer Plan includes camping up to 21,325 feet/6,500 meters, and the Epic Plan includes camping and up to 26,247 feet/8,000 meters. If you want higher limits of coverage, you’ll want to consider the Explorer or Epic plan

  • What should I do if I get hurt while on a camping trip?

If you get hurt while camping, contact local authorities as soon as you’re able to do so for immediate attention. World Nomads Travel Insurance may help reimburse the cost of medical treatment, hospital stays, or even emergency medical evacuation if needed (subject to approval.) Access to a 24/7 Non-Insurance Emergency Assistance team is also included for support anytime, anywhere when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage for camping.

  • Do I get my money back if I cancel a trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is offered by all plans offered by World Nomads, and you may be reimbursed for pre-paid, unused, non-refundable expenses like flights, tours and accommodations if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason. U.S. residents (except those that live in New York) also have the ability to add additional cancel for any reason coverage when certain World Nomads plans are purchased.

  • What happens if my bags are delayed?
When you purchase travel insurance coverage for camping, baggage coverage is also included. If your checked-in bags are delayed more than 12 consecutive hours on the way to your destination, your plan may reimburse you for reasonable essential items like toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bag are reunited. Your coverage also includes non-insurance service that can help track down your bag and get it delivered to you.

World Nomads loves camping

We get it. You want to escape from the hustle and unwind under a blanket of stars. From lush forests to the endless horizons of Australia’s Outback, a camping trip offers every manner of revival. As exciting as planning your outdoor adventure is, travelling far from home and urban comforts also comes with risks.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans have been designed to offer cover for sudden and unforeseen events on your next camping trip such as being left empty handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your hiking gear in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell or if severe weather washes away your travel plans.

Nothing soothes the soul like the crackle of a campfire. As passionate campers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover all types of camping adventures:

  • Searching for the Northern Lights in Lapland
  • Pitching camp among the old growth forests of British Columbia
  • Trekking through Cradle Mountain – St Clair National Park, Tasmania

What's covered for camping?

Our plans can help you navigate any mishaps and help get you back on track. World Nomads may offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • The non-refundable costs of cancelling your trip due to sudden injury or illness to you, a travelling companion or close relative.
  • The Explorer Plan includes cover for official ‘Do Not Travel’ advice issued for your destination after you’ve received your Certificate of Insurance, which causes you to cancel your trip.
  • Overseas emergency medical expenses for sudden injury or illness.
  • Overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation back to Ireland.
  • Loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items. Remember to keep copies of your original receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Checked-in baggage delayed for more than 24 hours and the replacement costs for essential clothing and toiletries while waiting for your baggage (keep receipts).
  • Rental car insurance excess (Explorer Plan only).
  • Cover for some Coronavirus (COVID-19) related events. To find out more about our cover for COVID-19 related events, including benefit limits and exclusions, click here.

Cover for adventure or sports activities while camping

What’s a camping trip without some action?

Both our plans offer cover for  activities such as bungee jumping, stand up paddle boarding/surfing and scuba diving up to 30 metres. While there are many activities available on the Standard plan, those feeling extra adventurous can upgrade to the Explorer Plan which offers higher benefits and a broader range of activities and sports pursuits. It costs more but it may better suit your needs as it offers upgrades for activities such as camping and hiking up to 6,000 metres, or mountaineering (with ropes, picks or specialist climbing equipment) up to 6,000 metres.

Travel insurance tip: Your cover will depend on the activity(ies) you chose at the time of policy purchase and terms and conditions apply for each activity. Level 1 sports and activities are automatically covered on the Standard and Explorer Plans. You can upgrade your cover for a range of other activities, experiences and manual work if you select the activities (listed as Level 2, 3 and 4) but you will need an upgrade to the Explorer Plan.

Check your Policy Wording for details or contact us if you have questions.

Know where you’re going and what to do if the unexpected happens

Before you head off to the wilderness, it pays to arm yourself with these camping tips for a safer trip:

  • Make sure to include all the countries you’ll be visiting or travelling through on your policy as well as the adventure activities you’re planning.
  • Check you have all the paperwork you’ll need for the countries you’ll be visiting for example, visas, and camping or visitor permits for national parks.
  • Don’t leave home without your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); it entitles you to reciprocal healthcare in certain countries.
  • Check the local camping regulations for the places you are visiting. Some countries allow you to camp anywhere on public or private land away from habitation, however many countries do not allow this and if you cross a border unknowingly, you could be fined and it could affect your cover.
  • Be responsible when choosing a camping destination or activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination? Are you using an accredited operator? Can our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team reach you if you get into trouble?

What's not covered?

Some things we do not cover include:

  • Any expenses that relate to pre-existing medical conditions, as outlined in the Policy Wording.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.
  • Any items left unattended in a motor vehicle.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.
  • Any search or rescue operations to remove you from a life-threatening situation (unless cover is available for a natural catastrophe under your policy).
  • Misuse of alcohol or drugs to the extent that it risks your health or impairs your faculties.
  • Damage from any illegal activity.
  • Expenses that are recoverable from elsewhere, e.g. transport carriers or accommodation providers.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

Simple and flexible travel insurance to take you camping around the world. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

  • As featured in:

You want to escape from the hustle and unwind under a blanket of stars. We get it, we’re a community of adventure travelers, and sometimes getting off the beaten track is exactly what we need. From lush northern European forests to the endless horizons of Australia’s Outback, a camping trip offers the chance to get in touch with nature and explore a different side of travel. But as exciting as planning your outdoor adventure is, traveling far from home and urban comforts can also come with risks.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for independent travelers like you for sudden and unforeseen events on your next camping trip, such as being left empty-handed when the airline loses your baggage (with your tent in it), if you need to see a doctor if you are hurt or unwell, or if severe weather washes away your travel plans.

What’s covered

World Nomads can offer cover (up to the policy limits) for:

  • Baggage protection: Got your stuff stolen while camping? Our gear coverage may help with replacing belongings that were swiped.
  • Emergency medical: Camping and fresh air can be great for the body and soul, but not if it ends up in a bad fall. Emergency medical coverage can come in handy in the case of an accident or injury.
  • Evacuation: Your camping paradise may be far away from medical facilities. With our cover, you can get transported to the medical facility best for your care, subject to approval from us.
  • Trip cancellation: Has a sick or injured traveling companion, or a severe weather event put a stop to your camping adventure? Depending on your plan and Country of Residence, you may be able to recover your travel expenses.
  • Coverage for some Coronavirus (COVID-19) related events: To find out more, including benefit limits and exclusions, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article.

Your coverage will vary according to your country of residence and whether you chose a Standard or an Explorer plan. Read your policy for details on cover, maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and conditions of your coverage. Contact us if you have any questions about your cover.

Cover for adventure or sport activities while camping

It doesn’t matter if you’re camping in a van or hiking into a remote campsite – chances are you’re going to want to do some more adventuring wherever you’re headed.

Depending on your Country of Residence, and the plan you choose, you can be covered for several activities such as bungee jumping, kayaking, and scuba diving up to 30 meters. While there are many activities available on the Standard plan, those feeling extra adventurous can upgrade to the Explorer Plan. The Explorer plan offers upgrades for activities such as hiking up to 6,000 meters, or canyoning and scuba diving up to 50 meters.

Check your policy carefully for details or contact us if you have questions.

Know where you’re going, and what to do if the unexpected happens

Before you head off into the wilderness, it pays to arm yourself with these tips for a safer camping trip:

  • Make sure to include all the countries you’ll be visiting or traveling through on your policy, as well as the adventure activities you’re planning to do or participate in.
  • Check you have all the paperwork you’ll need for the countries you’ll be visiting, for example, visas, camping or visitor permits for national parks and campgrounds.
  • Check the local camping regulations for the places you are going. Some countries allow you to camp anywhere on public or private land away from habitation; however, many countries do not allow this, and if you cross a border unknowingly, you could be fined, and it could affect your cover.
  • Be responsible when choosing a camping destination or activity. Does it suit your experience? Are there any travel or weather alerts for your destination? Are you using an accredited operator? Can our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team reach you if you get into trouble?

What’s not covered?

Some things we may not cover include:

  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team advise you to do.
  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition, as explained in the policy wording.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from another source, e.g., transport carriers or accommodation providers.
  • Unattended baggage or personal items.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.
