If you have multiple trips planned this year, an annual travel insurance plan could cover them all.

What do you do when you can’t decide between surfing in Costa Rica, going on a safari in Africa, or exploring the ancient ruins of Greece? If you’re anything like us, you book all three!

Sometimes we like to throw in some fun getaways closer to home too. There’s so many great things to explore here in the US - like taking a scenic drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains or exploring Arizona’s Sonoran Desert.

We’re booking multiple trips each year, and we know you may be too. No matter where you’re headed, and what you’re doing though, there’s always a chance of unexpected circumstances that can ruin your plans. Our nomads have dealt with everything while traveling - from broken legs, stolen iPhones, family emergencies back home, and more. None of those things are fun to deal with, but being covered by a good travel insurance plan* could help with those types of situations. If you’re a nomad who is roaming the world and you have multiple trips planned throughout the year, you may want to consider an annual travel insurance plan.

What is an Annual Travel Insurance Plan?

The World Nomads Annual Plan allows travelers to cover multiple trips over a 12-month period. It’s designed for frequent travelers, weekend warriors, digital nomads, festival and event enthusiasts, and adventure junkies (like us!). You purchase just once and it covers an entire year’s worth of fun! There is no limit on the number of trips taken within a year, but the max length per trip is 45 days.  Please note that the Annual Plan is not available for residents of Missouri, Montana, New York or Washington State.

Some of the benefits included in the World Nomads Annual Plan include:

Adventure Activities: World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for US residents and you could be covered for things like scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef and roadtripping to all of your favorite National Parks.

Trip Cancellation: If you get sick before you depart for your trip and your doctor tells you not to travel, you’ll have to cancel it. If something like this happens, trip cancellation coverage may reimburse you for non-refundable, prepaid expenses like airfare and hotel accommodations. If you cancel your trip for a covered reason, your annual travel insurance plan could cover you for up to 100% of the non-refundable trip costs, up to a maximum of $5,000 per individual coverage term.

Emergency Medical Expense: If you get sick while or injured while you’re traveling, you may have to get emergency medical care. Depending on where you are in the world, your US health insurance plan may or may not be accepted. Your annual travel insurance includes medical expense coverage up to $100,000 per trip, and you could be reimbursed for things like x-rays, prescriptions, and hospital visits.

Emergency Medical Evacuation & Medical Repatriation: If you get hurt while hiking in a remote jungle, you may find limited medical services available. Emergency Medical Evacuation may help you get transported to a place where medically necessary treatment is available. This can even mean air transport, which could be lifesaving. In some cases, it will be best for you to return to the US for continued care. The Medical Repatriation coverage may help get you there. These coverages will need to be pre-approved by the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.

Baggage Delay: If your bag is delayed for more than 12 hours on the way to your destination, your coverage could help reimburse for things like toiletries or a change of clothes until you are reunited with your bag. Maximum Benefit Amounts apply, and you can learn more in your Summary of Plan Benefits.

Rental Car Damage: What happens if you rent a car while traveling and then get into a wreck or it gets stolen? Your Annual Plan may help cover the cost to repair the vehicle due to covered reasons, all of which must be beyond your control. Certain cars are not eligible, like luxury or off-road vehicles.

Some other benefits included in the Annual Plan:

Trip Interruption

Trip Delay

Natural Disaster Evacuation

The Annual Plan also includes the same non-insurance benefits as the other travel insurance plans offered by World Nomads. These include:

  • Service from Blue Ribbon Bags that helps reunite you with your delayed and lost checked luggage
  • Pre-trip medical support from Runway Health and FootprintID
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance to support you in your travels

When you get a quote for annual travel insurance, you’ll be able to learn more about the coverage in your Summary of Plan Benefits. If you have questions, feel free to contact us anytime.

How is the 45-day trip limit calculated?

The important thing to remember about the Annual Travel Plan is that this is not meant to be used as health insurance overseas. This is not meant for expats living abroad; it’s meant for digital nomads, festival goers, thrill seekers, culture lovers, and eager explorers. So how do we calculate the 45 days? You must either return home after the 45 days or have another trip booked (with documentation to prove it) right after.

Is an Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance Plan worth it?

Before you get a quote for travel insurance, think about your travel plans for the next year. Maybe you’re planning to go skiing in the Rockies in winter, celebrate Spring Break in Mexico, and take a summer vacation in Europe. Or maybe you’re more of a spontaneous traveler and don’t have all of your year’s trips planned yet. That’s ok too - we also like to keep our calendar open and jump on those last minute travel deals. If you think you’ll be taking multiple trips throughout the year though, the annual travel insurance plan may save you money instead of insuring each of those trips separately.

Aside from the financial benefits you may see, this plan may also save you time. Once you purchase your annual travel insurance plan, you’re set for the year. While you’ll still have to book hotels and search for airline tickets for each of your adventures, you won’t have to get a quote for travel insurance each time you book a trip. That will be one thing you’re able to cross off of your travel planning to-do list.

What isn’t covered by an Annual Multi-Trip Plan?

There’s a lot that is covered with the annual travel insurance plan offered by World Nomads, but there’s some things that aren’t covered. If you’re a snowbird leaving New York and headed to Florida for the entire winter, we’re totally envious of you, but you may not be covered. The annual travel insurance plan doesn’t cover trips longer than 45 days. A few other things that wouldn’t be covered include:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Traveling for the purpose of getting medical treatment
  • Travel to sanctioned countries such as Iran, Syria, Crimea, Cuba or North Korea
  • Travel within 100 miles of your home
  • Open-ended travel for longer than 45 days
  • Traveling against your doctor’s advice
  • Rentals of trucks, pickups, full-size vans mounted on truck chassis, heavy duty trucks, jeep-type vehicles, campers, trailers, motor bikes, motorcycles, off road vehicles, recreational vehicles or Exotic Vehicles

A true claim story

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • My wide fell in our house and broke her right kneecap. She had to have surgery and the doctor says she has to stay off her right leg for 8 weeks. I had to cancel my trip to Israel because I have to stay in the house and be her caregiver.

    U.S. resident
  • I went to the hospital because I felt a fever and upon further testing they found it to be dengue fever. They also found a infection in my liver which made the process of getting better take longer than usual. I stayed in the hospital for 8 days before I was discharged.
