Travel Insurance for health emergencies

Travel insurance is there to help you when you need it most. If you've been involved in an accident or you've fallen ill and need medical care, our travel insurance policies can help patch you up and get you back on the road.

Just keep in mind that our policies are travel insurance policies not health insurance policies, and many policies don't cover existing medical conditions. Make sure you read through your policy carefully to see how and if you can be covered.

So this isn't a health insurance plan?

No, it's a travel insurance policy. It's there for overseas unexpected medical emergencies. It's not designed to cover cover ongoing illness, routine check-ups or treatment overseas, or any treatment when you get home.

What does travel insurance cover if I'm sick or injured?

If you’re injured in an accident or suddenly become ill while travelling, you can be covered for overseas emergency medical treatment including:

  • Hospitalisation.
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment.
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Prescribed medicines.
  • Ambulances.
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary.

We also have 24/7 Emergency Assistance teams who can guide you to the nearest hospital, arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to the medical facility, and give support to your family. Coverage may depend on your past medical history, what's happened to you and any other conditions, limits or exclusions of cover as described in your policy.

Is cover for Coronavirus available?

World Nomads can offer benefits for medical issues related to Coronavirus (COVID-19). If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and it’s not considered an ‘existing medical condition’ under our policy, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care;
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation;
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

In addition, our Explorer Plan also has a Coronavirus Travel Costs benefit for certain events. You can check out our Coronavirus cover article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

What’s not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims for overseas medical expenses we see where there's no cover include:

  • If you're intoxicated as a result of taking drugs or alcohol.
  • Where you've been acting recklessly.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home to New Zealand (that's what your health insurance or national health coverage at home is designed to do).
  • Any existing medical conditions.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.

For more information check out our articles on overseas medical coverage and adventure sports coverage.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Cramps and body explosions in India.

I had been sick in India for about a month with ongoing symptoms including diahorrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, fever, loss of appetite etc. Once we had arrived in Turkey I had an attack during the night at our Hostel. I was vomiting, had diahorrhea and intense stomach cramping so my boyfriend and I thought it was best to head to a hospital. Due to my condition I could not walk, it was also 2am/3am and we had no other method of getting to a hospital other than arranging for the hospital to send an ambulance to pick me up. Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctors undertook an examination of me and my conditions and due to severe dehydration they gave me a drip to restore my fluids. To find out what the causation of my symptoms were, they conducted tests on my blood and stool. The doctor also prescribed me medication to treat both my symptoms and illness. These included creams and also antibiotics.

Travel Insurance for Overseas Health Emergencies

Learn what makes travel insurance different to health insurance, and how you may be covered in the event of a medical health emergency.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Article at a glance:

  • Travel insurance covers overseas medical emergencies, not routine or ongoing care.
  • It includes cover for GP visits, hospitalisation, emergency evacuation, repatriation, and more.
  • Call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team first if you’re sick or injured abroad.
  • COVID-19-related medical issues may be covered if it’s not a pre-existing condition.
  • Keep all receipts and reports — they’re essential for claims.
  • Existing medical conditions, treatment once home, and elective care are not covered.
  • Health insurance (like Medicare) only works in Australia, not overseas.
  •  Always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)/Financial Services Guide (FSG) and Target market Determination (TMD) to know what you are covered for and consider whether this product is right for you. Contact us if you have any other questions.

Find out why travel insurance isn't health insurance and learn more about how you may be covered if you’re trip is derailed due to a medical event.

This article is for Australian travellers who want to learn how travel insurance may help if you experience an urgent medical situation while abroad.

Important first step: if you’ve found yourself in a medical emergency, call the 24/7 Emergency Team immediately so we can confirm your cover and oversee your care.

Keep in mind: Our policies are travel insurance policies not health insurance policies, and most travel insurance policies don't cover existing medical conditions. Make sure you read through your combined Product Disclosure Statement (PDS)/Financial Services Guide (FSG) carefully to see how you may be covered.

The difference between health insurance and travel insurance

World Nomads offers travel insurance plans. Travel insurance is distinctly different to a health insurance plan. Travel insurance is there for overseas medical emergencies and is not designed to cover ongoing illness or treatment overseas, or any treatment when you get home.

Health insurance, on the other hand, is a type of insurance that helps cover the costs of medical care in your home country (e.g. Medicare in Australia). Health insurance typically includes hospital cover for treatments in a private or public hospital, and extras cover. Health insurance does not offer cover for travellers going overseas.

Overseas medical expenses

What's covered by World Nomads?

If it's necessary to seek urgent medical treatment while you’re travelling, your policy may cover your reasonable emergency overseas medical expenses, (up to the policy limits and when agreed by us, for up to 12 months from the date the illness first appears, or injury happens) for:

  • Visits to a GP or other registered medical practitioner
  • Medical evacuation by air or road ambulance to the most suitable medical facility
  • Admission and treatment in hospital
  • Day surgery and out-patient medical treatment
  • Prescribed medication for sudden illness and serious injury suffered while travelling
  • Prescribed physiotherapy
  • Prescribed alternative therapy treatment (Explorer Plan only)
  • Clinical psychology (Explorer Plan only)
  • Out-of-pocket expenses if admitted to hospital (Explorer Plan only)
  • A travel partner or close relative to travel to and remain with you if you are admitted to hospital
  • Repatriation home - with a medical escort if you’re not fit to continue travelling, when pre-approved on the reasonable recommendation of a medical practitioner appointed by us.

Note: Use this as a guide only, as every claim is assessed on its individual circumstances.

We also have 24-hour multi-lingual Emergency Assistance teams who can guide you to the nearest hospital, arrange medical transport, set up direct payments to the medical facility, and keep you in contact with your family back in Australia.

Coverage may depend on your past medical history, what's happened to you and any other terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of cover as described in your policy.

The features and benefits described are a summary of cover only. Cover is subject to the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions outlined in the FSG/ Product Disclosure Statement

Medical treatment overseas

If I need to seek medical treatment, what do I do?

If you face a medical emergency, suddenly fall ill, have an accident while overseas, or someone on your policy passes away while travelling, follow these steps:

  • Call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team immediately for advice on what to do and where to go.
  • Go to the closest medical facility for the emergency medical treatment you need. Call local emergency services to receive any necessary medical attention.
  • Follow professional advice: Adhere to the medical professionals’ guidance. We can coordinate directly with them to ensure you receive the international medical care you require, including emergency evacuation and repatriation if required.
  • Keep documentation: save all medical reports, receipts, and relevant documentation – these are essential for processing your claim. Learn about what happens if you are missing something.
  • Stay informed: keep communication lines open with your family and the assistance team to adjust your travel plans as the situation develops.
  • Manage your accommodation: If you need to return to Australia for a covered event, take care of overseas accommodation by cancelling bookings. Note: expenses won’t be reimbursed if you haven't made reasonable efforts to cancel or seek refunds.

Is cover for COVID-19 available?

World Nomads may offer benefits for medical issues related to COVID-19. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas and it’s not considered an ‘existing medical condition’ under the policy, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to the Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care.
  • Medical costs including hospitalisation.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

Read more about COVID-19 cover in this article, which includes information on benefit limits and exclusions.

What's not covered

What isn't included for overseas medical treatment?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, so make sure you read the PDS/FSG for what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.

Some of the main medical-related events that aren’t covered include:

  • Any existing medical condition you had before purchasing your policy and/or that you suffered in previous periods of insurance (i.e. prior to purchasing more cover if you are extending your trip), unless it qualifies as an automatically covered condition.
  • Private hospital treatment when public funded treatment was available.
  • Where care is available under any Reciprocal Health Care Agreement*.
  • Any medical expenses incurred once you return home, even if you require ongoing medical treatment for something that occurred during your trip. Travel insurance does not provide health insurance at home.
  • Expenses which are not reasonable or medically necessary; routine treatment; elective treatment.
  • Anything else that’s listed in the General Exclusions and specific section exclusions in the PDS/FSG.

*About Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (Australia)

The Australian government has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with many countries overseas – you can read more about these as the level of cover varies between them. These agreements mean eligible Australians may get help with the cost of certain essential medical treatment when visiting these countries.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. FSG/PDS in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Looking for comprehensive travel insurance to cover your (or your child’s) adventure overseas? World Nomads has designed our travel insurance cover with the adventurous in mind and covers many activities up-front.

Are you looking for comprehensive travel insurance?

While we won't say our travel insurance is comprehensive (because it doesn't cover everything), our travellers get up to all sorts of different things, so we offer two levels of cover - Standard and Explorer - with options to include extra activities to cover both the more, and less, adventurous.

As you'd expect, every policy is different and has multiple benefits. However, all of them include:

You also have access to World Nomads’ community of like-minded travellers, language guides, safety information, travel guides and more.

There are limits, conditions and exclusions which apply, so be sure to read the policy wording before you buy a policy.

What's not covered?

If you put yourself in danger then we won’t cover you. This includes going to places the Foreign Ministry of your Country of Residence tells you not to, doing activities that you’re not qualified for or are too dangerous. We have a list of covered activities in our policies and if you’re not sure, give us a call and we’ll let you know if we’ll cover it or not.

Other things we won’t cover include:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • Drugs or alcohol abuse
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (however if you're pregnant, read the policy wording to understand cover that's available, including for 'complications of pregnancy')

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn't covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

What does long term travel insurance cover?

We know there’s nothing more exciting than heading overseas with a ticket in your back pocket. So we designed our policies to cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences including casual bar work, skiing, zorbing and much more.

Our policies come with loads of benefits depending on the policy that you buy, but all of them cover:

What is the longest duration travel insurance can cover?

The maximum duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months (365 days) from the start date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

How do I buy more travel insurance cover?

You can buy more cover, even if you’re already on the road. Generally cover can be purchased for up to a year, but if you want to extend your trip beyond one year, you just need to jump online to get a quote

You can’t upgrade your policy type once you’ve departed and started your holiday, so you’ll have to buy a new policy if you need more coverage. That’s why it’s critical you select the right level of cover up front.

Please note: if you plan to extend your policy you should do so several days before it expires, due to time differences and possible administrative delays. If your policy is extended, we will issue you with an updated Certificate of Insurance.

What’s not covered on long term travel insurance?

There’s a number of other exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. Exclusions include but aren't limited to:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • If you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Ongoing medical treatment at home

It’s important to remember that World Nomads offers travel insurance… not private health/medical insurance. That means our policies won’t cover you for pre-existing medical conditions or ongoing medical care.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are terms, limits, conditions and exclusions that may apply. Always read your policy wording carefully before you buy and make sure it’s right for you. If you have more questions get in touch.

What is the longest duration travel insurance can cover?

The maximum duration will vary depending on whether you have purchased a Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy.

The maximum duration available for any Single Trip policy, including extensions, is 12 months (365 days) from the policy start date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.

With an Annual Multi-Trip, the maximum duration differs depending on whether you selected teh Standard or Explorer plan.

  • Standard Plan - 31 days per trip
  • Explorer Plan - 45 days per trip

How do I buy travel insurance cover for longer?

You can buy cover for longer, even if you’re already on the road. Cover on World Nomads policy is available for up to one year, but if you want to extend your Single Trip beyond one year, you just need to jump online to get a quote for a new policy.

Be sure to revisit the eligibility criteria and key definitions such as ‘home’, as this and other terms and conditions have recently changed. We regularly review and change our policies and the cover we offer, so be sure that the cover still meets your needs each time you purchase.

You can’t upgrade your policy type once you’ve departed and started your holiday, so you’ll have to buy a new policy if you need more coverage. That’s why it’s critical you select the right level of cover up front.

Please note: If you plan to extend your Single Trip policy you should do so several days before it expires, due to time differences and possible administrative delays. If your policy is extended, we will issue you with an updated Certificate of Insurance.

What’s not covered on long term travel insurance?

There are a a number of other exclusions so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. Exclsuions include but aren't limited to:

  • Engaging in any illegal activities (coverage will not be provided for such actions)
  • Alcohol and/or drug abuse or alcohol and/or drug dependency
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Ongoing treatment at home

It’s important to remember that World Nomads offers travel insurance… not medical/health insurance. That means our policies won’t cover you for pre-existing medical conditions or ongoing medical care. We can however help you start on your road to recovery from injuries or illness incurred during your travels and ensure your safe arrival home.

Severed Nerve

I was opening a bag of potatoes with a knife. The knife slipped and cut the 2nd (index) finger on my left hand. I attended the local emergency department in Aix-en-Provence at no charge, they referred me to Clinique Axium the following day. I underwent micro surgery to repair the ulnar nerve in my finger which I had partially severed (50%). Up until this time I was unaware that I had injured the nerve and definitely wasn't aware that I would require surgery. This operation was conducted under local anaesthetic.. I have had 2 follow up appointments at the Clinique the first of which was to issue a prescription to enable my dressings to be changed along with having a specialised splint made to keep my finger in a bent position to enable healing.

We've designed our travel insurance policies to cover more than 150 activities and events, including casual bar work, skiing, zorbing and more. If you're looking to travel long-term, we have travel insurance that can keep you covered for up to 12 months.

What can long-term travel insurance cover?

Whether you’re going on a long trip or a short trip, all of our travel insurance policies provide Australians cover for:

  • Trip cancellation: we may reimburse your prepaid non-refundable trip cost if something unexpected happens and you need to cancel your trip. Covered risks include an unforeseen medical condition or government travel advisory.
  • Trip interruption: coverage may provide reimbursement for your unused, prepaid non-refundable trip costs and for additional expenses you incur, such as airline change fees, if after you’ve started your trip, your trip is interrupted. If you get sick or injured and need to make a change to your travel plans or your trip is interrupted for another covered risk, such as a missed connection due to inclement weather or airline strike, you may need trip interruption insurance. Read your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to make sure your situation is covered before you make a claim. Contact us anytime if you need assistance rebooking your trip.
  • Emergency medical expenses: like an urgent visit to the doctor if you become sick or injured, prescription medicine to help you get well, ambulance transportation, x-rays, and hospital stays.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: if you get injured or really sick and the local doctor recommends that you return back to Australia.
  • Delayed, lost or stolen baggage.
  • 24//7 worldwide emergency assistance.

Our travel insurance policies are designed by travellers, for travellers. At World Nomads we love to explore our boundaries when we travel. We cover more than 150 activities, sports, volunteer and work experiences, including skiing, hiking, scuba diving and more.

Who might want to buy travel insurance for a long trip?

Travellers might be interested in purchasing a long stay travel insurance policy. This could include:

  • University students going to study abroad who want to travel in between quarters or semesters.
  • Backpackers and road-trippers on a long-term holiday.
  • Digital nomads making the most of work and play.
  • Lucky Aussies who have won the Powerball and are heading out to explore the world with their newfound freedom and bags of money.
  • Families travelling for the summer holidays.

How long can travel insurance cover me for?

Our policies are designed to be flexible. We offer short and long-term travel insurance policies, and allow travellers to extend their coverage (or buy a new plan) even while overseas. Aussie residents can buy a World Nomads travel insurance policy for a maximum duration, including all extensions, of 12 months from the departure date.

When you get a quote, you can compare our two plans, Standard and Explorer, and download the full PDS before you buy.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning to explore the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t worry. You have a couple of options to ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Extend your policy: You can extend your policy online through your World Nomads Member Account. And you can extend from overseas while travelling, as long as you extend your policy before it expires. Terms and conditions, and limitations apply so check the PDS details before you purchase to make sure this will suit your needs.
  • Purchase a new policy: If your policy has expired, you can purchase a new one while you’re still travelling. If you buy travel insurance during your overseas holiday, you are still subject to a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this period. Your PDS will have full details to understand the cover, limits, and exclusions.
  • Purchase and track your policies with your World Nomads membership: If you buy travel insurance with us, log in to manage and view multiple policies in one place online, making it easy to buy more policies as needed, and access online claims forms. Make sure you log in before purchasing each new policy.

When you can’t buy more cover

You won’t be able to buy more cover or extend your policy if it’s already expired, if you’re 70 years old (or older) or if the policy/product you bought is no longer available.

What’s not covered by long-term travel insurance?

All travel insurance policies have exclusions and limitations. We won’t provide cover for:

  • If you've taken drugs or overindulged in alcohol.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (remember it's not regular health insurance; it's for out of country medical emergencies).
  • Ongoing treatment at home.
  • Some pre-existing conditions, especially those not stable and controlled.
  • Cancelling your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Gastro in Bali

I arrived home around 7:30ish from dinner feeling unwell and attempted to go to sleep. About half an hour later i threw up and had diarrhea which continued on and off for few hours. Around 1:20 am my heart begun palpitation and I felt dizzy with blurry vision. I called my mother and father whom are currently in Bali also on holiday. They came to where i am staying and decided it was best to take me to the emergency room. I was taken to Kasih Ibu Hospital in Denpasar. Where doctors treated me and kept me in the ICU for 2 days for further observation and testing.
