Travel Insurance for Backpacking

Protect the freedom of carrying everything on your back.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

For many nomads, backpacking is the bedrock of adventure; roaming forgotten streets with just your trusty pack to sustain you.

Even if you like to travel with everything you need on your back, travel insurance is still a good idea in case backpacking mishaps (or worse) surprise you on the road. World Nomads travel insurance is designed for backpacking abroad – whether you’re heading to Spain and Italy or Australia, South America, the Caribbean and further afield.

Why buy travel insurance for when you’re backpacking?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer cover for sudden and unforeseen costs such as if you’re injured in a traffic accident and need urgent medical treatment, or if your transport carrier damages or loses your much-needed pack with everything in it, or a crafty pickpocket swipes your phone from under your nose.

What’s covered when backpacking?

Our plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical expenses for sudden injury or illness.
  • Overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation back home.
  • Loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items. Always get a Property Irregularity Report from the relevant travel supplier or carrier as soon as you discover the loss or damage. You’ll need it to submit your claim along with a police report, copies of the original receipts and any luggage tickets.
  • Checked-in baggage delayed for more than 24 hours and the cost of buying essential clothing and toiletries while waiting for your baggage (keep those receipts!).
  • Your non-refundable costs of cancelling or curtailing your trip due to sudden injury or illness to you or your travelling companion.
  • Cover for cancellation caused by official Department of Foreign Affairs travel warnings advising against all travel or all but essential travel issued for your destination up to 7 days before the certified departure of your trip (Explorer Plan only).
  • Cover for travel delays and natural catastrophe (Explorer Plan only).

Does my plan include cover for Coronavirus-related events?

Our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Coronavirus (COVID-19) overseas (excluding pre-existing medical conditions, as defined in the policy wording) – cover includes medical assistance, repatriation and hospitalisation benefits.

What’s not covered for backpacking?

Some things we do not cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions, as per the policy wording.
  • Expenses that can be recovered from other sources e.g. transport carriers, accommodation providers or other insurance policies.
  • The policy excess amount as shown in the policy wording.
  • If you refuse to be repatriated or evacuated.
  • Any loss from being intoxicated with drugs or alcohol.
  • Reckless behavior such as heading somewhere remote or into a war zone.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times.
  • If you don't report any loss to the police and appropriate carrier or authority as soon as possible after the loss is discovered. Don’t forget to get written reports to support any claim you may make.
  • Personal baggage stolen from an unattended vehicle unless locked away and not visible from the outside.

Choose a plan to suit your needs

Both our Standard and Explorer Plans have many of the same benefits, while the Explorer Plan offers travellers further covered events and higher benefit limits and/or sub limits.

If you’re planning on doing extra activities such as scuba diving, rock climbing or manual work, for example, our article on covered sports and activities can help you select the optional upgrades you’ll need to add to your plan when you buy your policy. Keep in mind some types of work and high-risk activities may not be covered at all.

Some FAQS

Am I covered if I travel to a country not specified on my policy?

Backpacking often means going wherever the breeze blows you, but before you decide to cross the border into a country not specified on your Certificate of Insurance, check with our customer service team to check if your policy will extend to that region.

Can I extend my policy while still travelling?

Yes, it’s possible to extend your existing Single Trip policy while still travelling and before its expiry date, for up to 12 months from the start date.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, get in touch.

For British backpackers, exploring the world’s hidden gems - from Southeast Asia’s temples to the Andes’ peaks - offers unmatched freedom at a fraction of the cost. But with adventure comes uncertainty, and not all surprises are fun. That’s why investing time in researching travel insurance for backpackers is a worthwhile endeavour, ensuring you're covered for whatever comes your way.

Why buy travel insurance for when you’re backpacking?

World Nomads travel insurance plans offer cover for sudden and unforeseen costs, such as if you’re injured in a traffic accident and need urgent medical treatment, or if your transport carrier damages or loses your much-needed backpack with everything in it, or a crafty pickpocket swipes your phone from under your nose.

What’s covered with backpacking travel insurance?

Our plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for scenarios such as (to name just a few):

  • Imagine this: you’re set for a South Asian adventure—culture, cuisine, and new experiences at an affordable price. But then you get a sniffle. It’s not serious enough for a hospital visit, but wouldn’t it be great to talk to a doctor back home? Enter Air Doctor. With it, you can connect with a doctor (in your own language) and get those sniffles sorted, so you can get back to your adventure without having to brave the local health system.
  • Got a serious overseas medical emergency? We may be able to cover your medical expenses, evacuation, or repatriation back home.
  • Imagine your flight is delayed just as you’re about to embark on your backpacking adventure. Annoying, right?! SmartDelay ™ gives you access to airport lounges, so you can relax in style while you wait.
  • You’re deep in the Amazon, and suddenly your gear goes missing. No need to panic - our coverage could cover up to £3,000 for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage. Just be sure to file a report and keep those receipts.
  • Your hike in the Alps is delayed, and you’re stuck without your essentials. We’ve got you covered for those unexpected expenses if your checked-in baggage is delayed for more than 24 hours.
  • Plans changed by an unexpected injury or illness? We may cover your non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel or cut your journey short due to sudden health issues affecting you or your travel companion.

What’s not covered for backpacking?

Some things we do not cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions, when you purchase your policy or book your trip.
  • Reckless behaviour such as heading somewhere remote or into a war zone.
  • If you don't keep your gear safe and secure at all times, or stolen from an unattended or unlocked vehicle
  • If you don't report any loss to the police and appropriate carrier or authority as soon as possible after the loss is discovered. Don’t forget to get written reports to support any claim you may make.

Choose a plan to suit your needs

Both our Standard and Explorer Plans have many of the same benefits, while the Explorer Plan offers travellers further covered events and higher benefit limits and/or sub limits.

If you’re planning on doing extra activities such as surfing, rock climbing (outdoor) or manual work, for example, our article on covered sports and activities can help you select the optional upgrades you’ll need to add to your plan when you buy your policy. Keep in mind some types of work and high-risk activities may not be covered at all.

Frequent flyer or once off traveller?

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or planning a one-off adventure, your travel insurance needs differ. For the serial backpacker, an Annual Multi-Trip policy provides year-round coverage, making it easy to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of having to buy a new policy each time.

If this is your big once-in-a-lifetime trip, a Single Trip policy offers all the protection you need, tailored specifically to your journey.

Travel insurance when visiting Great Britain

What to know when planning your British getaway.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Ahh, Great Britain - home to the British royals, countless unique castles, stunning scenery, and a rich history, which spans from Stonehenge to Shakespeare and beyond. Before you book your trip to Great Britain - perhaps to see Macbeth at The Globe - get your travel insurance sorted, so the only drama is on stage with the actors.

When planning a trip to the UK the most common issues international travelers face are lost or delayed luggage, or unexpected medical issues. And now you can add Coronavirus to the list. But never fear, follow our travel tips to get the most out of your cover and your holiday in the UK.

What should I look out for when traveling to Great Britain?

Lost, stolen or delayed baggage cover

It can throw a massive spanner in the works to arrive at Heathrow and find yourself alone at the baggage carousel, watching it go around waiting for your bags to appear. Petty theft is common across Europe, and you could also get your gear stolen on public transport or from your accommodation.

The good news is that all World Nomads policies offer some cover (up to the policy limits) for loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items.

Keep in mind that all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

What happens if…

  • My bags are stolen or damaged: as soon as you’ve realized your bags have been stolen or damaged please report it to the relevant authority (carrier, tour operator, accommodation provider). In the case of a theft, you’ll also need to report it to the local police or relevant authority, as theft is a crime. Insurance won’t cover things such as losing bags or valuables that were left unattended; this includes if they were left unattended in a car (even if the car is locked). Remember to always keep originals or copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • My bags are delayed: you may be covered if your bags were delayed. You’ll need to report the incident and get a Property Irregularity Report (or a similar official report) in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier first. You may be able to claim your expenses for any essentials you have to buy to keep you going until your bags are returned. You must get copies of all written reports, luggage checks and tickets, travel documentation and all correspondence with the carrier or service provider if you need to make a claim.

You may also need to take depreciation into account and some policies, depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you purchase, may also have an excess applicable to any claim made. Details on how depreciation works can be found in your policy.

Tips for keeping your luggage safe:

  • Never leave your bags and valuables out of your sight and reach.
  • Always carry your electronics and valuables with you and lock your gear up in a secure location when you can’t take it with you.
  • Remember that if you buy anything, before or during your trip, to keep all receipts.

Overseas medical insurance and cover for Coronavirus-related events

When traveling to the UK, overseas medical insurance is a good idea in case of an accident or sudden illness. You don’t want to be left out of pocket if you have to visit a local doctor, go to hospital, need an urgent trip to the dentist, or even worse, have to be repatriated back to your Country of Residence. All our policies include some level of overseas medical cover, so you can focus on your recovery if you fall ill or have an accident on your travels.

Tips for travel in the UK and Covid-19:

  • It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting any of the UK’s popular hotspots, even in open-air places such as Stonehenge, London’s parks and palace grounds, or when strolling through the bustling streets of Edinburgh.
  • The level of cover you’ll have for any Coronavirus-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence. Check out our Travel Insurance cover for Coronavirus article which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

Nothing is better than staying in a vacation home where you can have space, privacy and the comforts of your own home. Maybe you’re headed to the Caribbean and booking a beachside vacation rental on an island, or perhaps you would rather stay in a

treehouse and be surrounded by the scenery of Nicaragua’s lush foliage. Either way, it helps to always be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re planning an epic trip that includes staying in a vacation rental, you may want to protect yourself with a travel protection plan that includes a range of travel insurance benefits and non-insurance services for vacation rentals that may help with everything from stolen gear to unexpected medical expenses.

Why should I consider travel insurance when staying in a vacation rental?

Unexpected issues can mess up even the most carefully planned trips. If the stairs are too steep and you take a tumble in your vacation rental or if a hurricane keeps you from reaching your dream vacation home, travel insurance and non-insurance services designed for vacation rentals may help you bounce back quickly with support for emergencies, delays, and disruptions. With coverage that is flexible to your needs, it’s a way to travel confidently when you’re staying in a vacation rental.

All plans include travel insurance coverage for vacation rentals, as well as several additional non-insurance services that may support you both before and during your trip. These include delayed or lost baggage tracking and delivery, portable health records and pre-departure telehealth services.

What level of travel insurance coverage do I need if I’m staying in a vacation rental?

World Nomads offers four plans for U.S. residents – Standard, Explorer, Epic and Annual – each with different levels of coverage. When you’re not lounging around poolside at your vacation rental, you’ll probably be doing other things like hiking or kayaking. That’s totally fine, because you may be covered for more than 250+ other sports, activities and experiences when you purchase a travel protection plan that includes travel insurance coverage and non-insurance services.

  • Standard Plan – This is the most basic plan, but includes travel insurance coverage for incidents while staying in a vacation rental. It includes up to $125,000 in emergency medical expenses and up to $2,500 for trip cancellation.
  • Explorer Plan – This plan also includes vacation rentals, plus even more activities – including skydiving. It also has higher limits of coverage for most benefits.
  • Epic Plan – This plan covers everything the Explorer covers, plus even more activities – including free soloing and cliff diving. It also has the highest benefit limits of coverage.
  • Annual Plan – If you’re planning multiple trips throughout the year, this plan may be for you. Just buy once and stay protected all year. It includes travel insurance coverage for vacation rental trips, as well as all of the other activities covered in the Standard Plan.

What may not be covered when staying in a vacation rental on your trip?

If you leave the burner on and the kitchen catches on fire, your travel insurance coverage for vacation rentals won’t pay for those damages. It’s up to you to make sure you take care of the place while you’re there. Some other things that aren’t covered include:

  • Unattended baggage, gear or personal items
  • Furniture or any other items that are part of the vacation rental
  • Alcohol and drug-related incidents and illegal activities
  • Not following ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued by the US government prior to departure
  • Participation in activities not listed in our 250+ sports, activities and experiences
  • Traveling or staying in a vacation rental within 100 miles of your home
  • Pre-existing conditions. You could be eligible for the Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver if you purchased the Epic or Explorer plan during the time-sensitive period and were medically able and not disabled from travel, based on the assessment of a physician, when you buy the plan. A definition of a pre-existing condition can be found in your plan document.

Top safety tips we recommend for staying at a vacation rental

  • Book vacation rentals through reputable, secure websites to make sure your payment information is protected.
  • Read your rental agreement. Become familiar with anything the host has shared regarding locks, alarms, etc.
  • Make sure the vacation rental has smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (and make sure they’re working.) Consider bringing your own portable carbon monoxide detector if the rental doesn’t have one.
  • Have a first-aid kit available. Bring one along with you just in case there’s not one in your vacation rental.
  • Have emergency contact information for your host.
  • Take advantage of the pre-departure medical consultation included in your non-insurance services and see if there are any vaccinations or prescription medications, like altitude sickness pills, recommended for your destination. Depending on the medication, you may need to start it prior to your trip (costs may apply)
  • Check with the Department of State to see if they have issued any travel advisories for your destination.
  • Enroll in the free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay updated on emergency situations.
  • Have a copy of your plan documents saved in your phone. Save the phone number for the 24/7 Non-insurance Emergency Assistance team and have that easily accessible as well.

Travel insurance for vacation rentals

Support for a canceled trip, stolen belongings, medical emergencies, and more

Space, privacy, the comforts of a home away from home – renting a vacation home is a great way to really get to know a place, whether it’s a lakeside chalet in Switzerland or a studio in New York City. But sometimes booking from a private homeowner could add a layer of “What if?”

World Nomads travel insurance is here to help with the need-to-know details of our vacation rental coverage, so you can get on with your getaway.

Why you should consider insurance when get a vacation rental

There are lots of reasons to consider travel insurance and hopefully, the worst thing that happens when you’re staying at your rental is eating the free snacks too fast. But, if you find yourself in a pinch or experience an emergency, travel coverage can save your sanity.

Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any optional extras or upgrades you add.

Choosing the right policy for you

It’s important to know that we offer two insurance plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage and benefits. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific holiday plans.

Keep in mind that depending on your travel plans and Country of Residence, you may need to upgrade your policy to be covered for the activities and benefits you choose.

You can get a quote, make a claim, or buy a policy instantly online, even while traveling.

What's covered by insurance when in a vacation rental?

Some of the benefits on our policies for vacation rentals may include cover (up to policy limits) for:

If your trip is cancelled

If you have to cancel your vacation rental at the last second due to something such as an urgent illness, you may be able to recoup your pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs, including your accommodation.

If your gear is stolen

Did a thief break into your vacation rental while you were out at dinner and make off with your expensive laptop or brand new DSLR camera? Personal effects may be covered, up to their cash value at the time they got swiped. (Just be sure to file a police report and keep a copy for your claim and keep any copies or original receipts.)

If you have a medical emergency

You may be staying in a comfortable home, but if you suffer an illness or injury in a foreign place, it can be a daunting experience. If you need to see a doctor or go to the hospital, you can claim your medical bills; just be sure to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.

Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to help you if you experience any issues on your travels including helping you access medical care in your location, help with translation at the medical facility and arrange medical evacuation or repatriation if required.

If there is a natural disaster

Is a flood or forest fire standing between you and the vacation rental of your dreams? If the property has been destroyed or you’ve been prevented from staying there due to an unforeseen natural disaster, we’ve got a silver lining in the cloud for you: you may be reimbursed your pre-paid trip expenses (moolah you can save for your next adventure!).

Keep in mind that terms, conditions, exclusions, and limits apply, so be sure to check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure whether something is covered, or have any questions, just contact us.

What's not covered?

  • Illegal activities and any incidents caused from being under the influence (partying is banned at most vacation rentals, anyway.)
  • Loss of enjoyment. If the vacation rental doesn’t look exactly like it did in the pictures or has a weird smell, you may have to take Plan B into account and choose your second-choice place to stay, which will be on your own dime.
  • If you travel against medical advice, or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.

Tips to get the most out of your vacation rental

  • Be sure to book your vacation rental home through a reputable source or website to avoid being scammed or turning up and there’s no vacation rental at all!
  • Check the rules and fine print of the vacation rental. Many rental homes have rules about maximum occupancy, age requirements, party policies and pet policies. Understand what you’re agreeing to before you book.
  • If something does happen on your trip – for example, your personal effects are stolen, you need to go to hospital, or your travel is delayed – make sure you get official reports, documentation, receipts and other relevant evidence to support any claims.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All of the information we provide is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described. Coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

What to do if you can’t go

What to do if you can’t go on your trip because someone at home is suddenly sick or injured

1. Rearrange or cancel your bookings

As soon as you know that you won’t be able to use any pre-booked or pre-paid accommodation, transport or tours, you must try to rearrange them, or if necessary, cancel.

Just remember, if you decide to rearrange, we’ll only pay up to the benefit amount. If you don’t rearrange or cancel as soon as reasonably possible, we won’t cover any additional rearrangement or cancellation costs that arise as a result. But you should only cancel arrangements when it’s absolutely necessary. For example, if your doctor says you can’t fly for two days, but you cancel a three-week trip, rather than putting it back by two days, we’ll only cover cancellation of two days’ worth of accommodation, not the entire booking.

2. Get it in writing

To support your claim, you’ll need to get the following:

  • Doctor or other medical practitioner’s report confirming what happened and the nature of the illness or injury.
  • Hospital admission report (if the person was admitted to hospital).
  • Ambulance report (if they were involved).
  • An Garda Síochána report (if they were involved).
  • Any other relevant documentation related to what happened.

How do I make a claim on my travel insurance?

3. Keep your itineraries and receipts

You’ll need to keep your receipts, itineraries and booking and cancellation confirmations including details of any refunds received for any affected transport and accommodation.

Our suggestions should help you avoid unnecessary costs, gather the right evidence and help keep your claim hassle free.

Ready?

4.
What if someone gets COVID-19 and I can’t travel?

Having a sick relative is stressful enough, let alone having to cancel a trip overseas too! For policies purchased after 17 June 2021, we now have cover on our Explorer Plan for some Coronavirus related travel events to assist our Irish travellers, including having to cancel or postpone your trip abroad because a close relative is diagnosed with Coronavirus.

We’ve also included cover for overseas medical expenses and medical evacuation and repatriation related to your Coronavirus diagnosis and this is available on both the Standard and Explorer plans.

Please note: COVID-19 cover depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our Coronavirus cover article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

This information may help you avoid unnecessary costs, gather the right evidence and help keep your claim hassle free.

All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending what's happened, your country of residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your policy will always have the full details.

What to do if you’re hurt in an accident

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

1. Safety first

Make sure everyone is safe. If you need immediate help, contact the local emergency services.

2. Seek medical attention

Get medical help from a doctor or hospital as soon as possible.

If it's an emergency situation, contact the local emergency services first, then contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as you can.

Once you’re able to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Depending on where you’re travelling, there may be Reciprocal Health Care Agreements in place (the Emergency Assistance team will let you know). The terms of your policy require that you use the public health system where possible, particularly when travelling in a country with reciprocal health agreements.

3. Get it in writing

Most claims need supporting documentation and medical claims are no different. So, while it may be the last thing on your mind, get copies of documents that will support your claim before you leave the medical facility such as:

  • Doctor or other medical practitioner’s report, confirming what happened and the nature of your injury.
  • Hospital admission report (if you’re admitted to hospital).
  • Ambulance and medical evacuation reports (if relevant).
  • Provide written evidence to verify your claim, such as a An Garda Síochána report (if they were involved).
  • Any other relevant documentation related to the accident.

4. Keep your receipts

You’ll need to keep all your receipts, along with your itineraries and booking and cancellation confirmations for any affected travel arrangements for when you claim. If you don’t do this, we may reduce or reject your claim.

5. Need to know more?

This information may help you when things go wrong, and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending what's happened, country of residency, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your policy will always have the full details.

What to do if your passport is stolen

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Having your passport stolen really sucks. Thankfully some World Nomads policies may help cover your extra costs while you arrange an emergency replacement passport. Here’s how.

1. Report the incident ASAP

Report the incident to the relevant authorities and get a report from them. This will include:

  • The An Garda Síochána.
  • Your nearest embassy, diplomatic or consular mission for your country of citizenship.
  • For visas and passports from other countries – contact the relevant embassy.
  • Any other relevant authorities, such as the airline, hotel or tour operator.

Travel Insurance tip: for certain countries, it is an offence not to report the loss or theft or your passport as soon as you learn of the loss. It may also affect your travel insurance cover if you don't report it as soon as reasonably possible. Contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team if you need help with this.

2. Arrange a replacement or emergency passport

Carefully check the process to apply for an emergency or replacement passport with the Irish embassy. You may need to attend an appointment at your nearest Irish embassy, High Commission or consulate after you’ve applied online on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website. You must provide us with copies of all documentation provided by the foreign government agency and the Ireland government. You will also need a written police report when your passport has been stolen.

If you need to travel to a different location to apply in person or collect your emergency passport, you should arrange to do this.

Travel Insurance tip: emergency passports do not permanently replace your passport. They can be issued quickly with limited validity so you can return to Ireland or continue with your trip.

3. Rearrange or cancel any affected travel arrangements

Once you’ve confirmed that any travel arrangements are going to be affected, contact any accommodation, tour, transport and other providers to rearrange or cancel any arrangements you may have. Make sure you get confirmation from them in writing of the changes or cancellation, and details of any refunds or extra fees paid.

4. Keep your receipts

If you think you'll need to claim, make sure you keep the official reports you were given and all original receipts as evidence to support your claim including your itineraries, booking and cancellation confirmations for any affected transport, accommodation and additional expenses.

5.Need to know more?

This information may help you when things go wrong and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different and cover will vary, depending what's happened, your country of residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your policy will always have the terms, conditions and exclusions that apply.
