If thieves break into your hotel room, you can make a claim for a replacement or a reimbursement of your stolen items.
While Ireland may be a top destination for a road trip, many Irish travellers are keen to explore the world. Maybe you’re dreaming of cruising the South Coast of Italy, driving in Australia’s Outback or town-hopping along the Pacific Coast Highway in California. Whatever road you plan, it’s always a good bet to have travel insurance just in case an unexpected setback puts the brakes on your trip.
One of the best things about a road trip is the freedom to explore at your own pace, on your own terms. Travel insurance is designed for many modes of transport, and there are many reasons why it’s important while you’re on the road.
Has your road trip ended before it started? An unexpected illness, or perhaps the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has issued a travel warning advising against ‘All Travel’ or ‘All But Essential Travel’ to a specific region or country? The cancellation benefit is for certain insured events and may allow you to cancel your trip and recover your pre-paid, non-refundable deposits when an emergency happens. Check out more about the benefits of cancellation cover to know what you may be covered for.
Your health and safety are our priority when you’re getting behind the wheel and travelling to new destinations. Especially if your injuries are beyond minor bumps and scratches and you end up in hospital. Our plans include emergency evacuation coverage for medical transfer to an appropriate medical facility when needed. If you’re accidentally injured or suddenly become ill while on your road trip, our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team is on hand to help you. Always check the maximum benefit amount specified which is outlined in in your Policy Wording.
When you’re in an unfamiliar place (especially a country where you don’t speak the language), it’s hard to know where to go for help. When you buy a World Nomads plan, you’ll have access to our 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance team to support you in a crisis. When you need urgent medical attention, our Emergency Medical Assistance team can help you out wherever you’re travelling.
4. Road trip interruptions and delay
There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a big trip only to lose everything if something unexpected throws a wrench in your plans. Trip disruption coverage can help salvage your pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses you’ve forfeited because of an insured event that disrupted your travels after you left Ireland. You will need to purchase the Explorer plan to access certain trip disruption and travel delay benefits. Check out our Help Centre article on what to look out for when it comes to trip disruption.
You may also need help getting your trip back on track. If you get delayed by more than 12 hours, you may need to pay for a hotel or a meal as you catch up to your itinerary. Check your Policy Wording for any conditions you need to meet: your delay might need to be a certain number of hours, (more than 12 hours for Irish travellers) and be caused by an insured event. Check out our Help Centre article which has information on delayed and missed flights.
5. Protection for stolen belongings and baggage
You may have camping gear in your boot or sunglasses in your glove compartment. Thieves can be crafty enough to dodge security measures and get into locked spaces. You can make a claim for reimbursement of your stolen items, up to a per item and total maximum limit. Please note, if the baggage is stolen from a vehicle, there must be visible evidence of damage and forced and violent entry into the vehicle and/or locked compartment, which is confirmed by a police report. Always keep any proof of ownership, age and value of your belongings. And keep any receipts for items you buy on your trip in case you need to make a claim.

We parked a rental car in the parking lot of a restaurant in Haut Bay, an area of Cape Town. After eating dinner, we returned to the car to find that a window had been broken and anything within easy reach had been stolen. Luckily for us, we had been smart enough to bring our very expensive camera inside the restaurant with us, only leaving behind the case and an extra lens.

As featured in:
Ahhh, the life of a British digital nomad…the world’s literally your workplace. But even the idyllic life of working in coffee shops and beachside huts can present risks. What would your work life look like without your laptop or phone? Stolen or damaged tech, and even sudden illness can derail your plans—and your productivity. Travel insurance could protect your lifestyle, both personally and professionally.
As a UK-based digital nomad, life abroad offers endless freedom, but it’s not without risks. Your tech gear’s crucial to keeping you connected, and an unexpected setback—like a stolen laptop in Bangkok—can disrupt the entire flexcation experience. With travel insurance, you can keep working from anywhere, knowing you have a backup plan for any adventure (or misadventure) that comes your way.
Imagine editing a video from a scenic spot in Bali, only to have your gear damaged in a sudden downpour, or losing your phone during a busy layover in Tokyo….not ideal, right? From shooting content on the go to managing client calls abroad, your digital workspace deserves to be protected, because well…it’s paying for your downtime play.
World Nomads offers two policies—Standard and Explorer—that may cover reimbursing your tech devices if they are stolen, lost or damaged while under your supervision. Both policies provide coverage for a wide range of valuables and gadgets, including:
Travellers tip: Always hang onto your receipts—hard copies or digital—for any gadgets you buy before or during your travels. They’ll come in handy if you need to make a claim. And don’t forget to make copies of your travel documents, ID cards, credit cards, and any other important info you’re taking on the road.
Being a digital nomad means being free to roam but also being prepared for the unexpected. World Nomads offers emergency medical coverage (up to £5,000,000 Standard Plan and £10,000,000 Explorer Plan) for when life throws you a curveball—from hospital visits to urgent care, and even repatriation back to the UK if necessary.
Life shouldn’t be all work and no play, especially when the world is literally your playground. If you’re a Brit who loves chasing thrills during work breaks, picture this: co-working at Dojo Bali and then stepping straight onto Echo Beach for a quick surf session. Heaven, right? With World Nomads, there is cover available for more than 150 sports and activities—just in case those waves get a bit gnarlier than expected. Just be sure to select the right policy to cover the level of activity you’ll be participating in, and declare at the point of sale.
Our Annual Multi-Trip (AMT) Policy offers the flexibility that frequent movers crave. Imagine working from a Parisian café one week, then logging into a Singaporean co-working space the next—all covered under one travel insurance policy. It’s the perfect fit for digital nomads who thrive on short, globe-hopping adventures. But if your plans involve staying in one place for a longer stretch, a Single Trip policy might be the way to go. Not sure which option suits your working holiday best? Compare Annual Multi-Trip vs Single Trip Travel Insurance here.
World Nomads Powered by Air Doctor offers digital nomads seamless access to a global network of trusted medical professionals. Through the Air Doctor app, you can effortlessly locate and book appointments with qualified doctors who speak your preferred language, ensuring you receive timely medical care wherever your work takes you. This free service enhances your travel experience by.removing the need to navigate foreign healthcare systems for non-urgent medical issues.
Flight delays are a hassle, especially when you’re a digital nomad flying out of Heathrow or Manchester, juggling work commitments and travel plans. With Smart Delay, you’ll gain access to the airport lounge if your flight is delayed by 90 minutes or more—perfect for unwinding, grabbing a bite, or catching up on work comfortably.
Travellers tip: Cyberattacks and identity theft are real threats when you’re on the move. Keep your data safe: use strong passwords, encrypt your laptop, and install antivirus software, skip public Wi-Fi where you can.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.

How World Nomads Travel Insurance helped when Anton's trip came to an end in Thailand
As featured in:
I fell on my side and heard the sound of dry stick breaking, I realized my leg was broken, then I just lay on the beach... The first phone call I got was from World Nomads and they basically told me, you don't worry about this Anton, just focus on getting better...and we'll take care of the rest.
Anton required surgery after breaking his leg and wrist in a fall while traveling in Thailand. We called Anton daily to check on his progress and once cover was confirmed, we took care of his medical bills and his hospital admin.
After his surgery, Anton couldn’t travel back to Iceland without help, so we sent Luke from our Emergency Assistance Team to Thailand to meet him while in hospital. Luke was also there to help Anton carry his bags and escort him home on the plane to Iceland.
Anton had paid for multiple flights to continue his journey across Asia, so we reimbursed him for the cost of the unused flights when his adventure was unexpectedly cut short.

Amongst the world’s most popular destinations, Mexico, has something to offer travelers from all parts of the globe. You can get stuck into adrenaline-pumping adventure activities, immerse yourself in the culture and history, or just relax by the beach. But Mexico is also a country where your safety and health should be taken seriously, that’s why travel insurance is essential if something goes wrong.
Despite its incredible natural wonders and beauty, Mexico can also be a dangerous place, especially if you don’t know the language and end up in the wrong part of town. However international travelers shouldn’t be deterred from experiencing one of the world’s most interesting cultures.
Here are some tips on how to stay safe and how to make the most out of your travel insurance coverage.
If you’re airline loses your bag or you're exploring the bars and cafes around Costa Maya and your wallet goes missing, you’ll need to get in touch with the police as soon as possible. Theft is one of our most common travel insurance claims by travelers in Mexico, which is why World Nomads travel insurance plans offer some protection for theft or lost luggage checked into a common carrier. Benefit limits, conditions and exclusions apply, and coverage varies depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve chosen.
Whatever happens, you'll need to get a written report of the incident. If there has been a theft, you must report this to the police. For theft or other incidents including loss of items, you must also report this to another authority, such as your tour operator, Bus Company, airline or hotel. This will need to be done as soon as reasonably possible in order to support your claim.
We understand that this can be a challenge when in a country where you don't speak the language. Thankfully, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can help you negotiate the local administration.
Many of us have been found guilty of over indulging when it comes to Mexico’s amazing food and drinks or come down with a bad case of Gastro. The danger with food poisoning or drinking contaminated water is that vomiting and diarrhoea can result in serious dehydration which can be deadly, so don’t rely on your own instincts or the Internet to get medical advice.
These emergencies can take down even the most experienced international traveler. That’s why our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can advise on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas where access to medical care can be tricky), and monitor your medical treatments if needed to make sure you are given proper care.
If you're involved in an accident, for example, while visiting the Mayan ruins that requires emergency medical treatment during your trip, your policy may cover emergency medical expenses for:
Please note: Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between travel insurance plans.
If something goes wrong, such as robbery, accident or illness, we provide travel insurance that can help with:
If you need more tips on traveling abroad in the midst of COVID-19 restrictions our COVID-19 travel insurance tips may provide some answers.
We’ve designed our plans to give you the freedom to learn and hone your diving skills by offering coverage for scuba diving accidents and other injuries underwater. Though both our Standard and Explorer plans include benefits for scuba diving, each plan has a different level of coverage and may exclude certain types of diving or dives of a certain depth.
For more information on scuba diving and what you are covered for, our Scuba diving article may help answer your questions.
An upgrade for certain activities and sports may be required and terms and conditions apply for each sport. Besides Scuba diving, World Nomads offers cover for 150+ adventure activities including:
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover please contact us for help.

Safety is a priority when you’re getting behind the wheel and traveling to new destinations. A trip protection plan can buffer the hazards of being on the road.
Car breakdowns and traffic accidents can put a dent in your wallet (as well as your car) if you don’t have vehicle coverage. Some World Nomads plans offer damage collision waiver coverage depending on your country of residence and your choice of a Standard or Explorer plan.
If you’re in a crisis, whether you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere or need urgent medical attention, our Emergency Assistance team is available 24/7 in whatever part of the world you’re traveling.
You may need help getting your trip back on track when you encounter problems whether that be a sudden illness, or an incident caused by bad weather.
If thieves break into your hotel room, you can make a claim for a replacement or a reimbursement of your stolen items.
There are many ways to explore the globe, but nothing beats getting in a car or camper van and exploring some the big cities and off the beaten track scenery. Taking the extra time to research and plan ahead – and consider travel insurance – can ensure that you’re covered at every pit stop of your road trip.
One of the best things about road trips is the freedom to explore a region or country at your own pace, on your own terms. Travel insurance is designed for many modes of transport, and there are many reasons why it’s important while you’re on the road. You should note that coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.
Has your road trip ended before it started? An unexpected illness, a car accident or the US Department of State or similar body issuing a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning to a specific region or country can stop you from getting on the road at all. The cancellation benefit is for certain insured events and may allow you to cancel your trip and recuperate your pre-paid, non-refundable deposits when an emergency happens and depending on your country of residence and the plan you’ve chosen. Check out more about cancellation cover to know what you may be covered for.
Your health and safety are a priority when you’re getting behind the wheel and traveling to new destinations. Especially if your injuries are beyond minor bumps and scratches and you end up in hospital. Our plans include emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation coverage for ambulances or transfers to an appropriate medical facility when needed. If you’re accidentally injured or suddenly become ill while on your road trip, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is on hand to help you. Always check the maximum benefit amount specified in your Policy Wording.
Car breakdowns and traffic accidents can put a dent in your wallet as well as your rental car if you don’t have vehicle coverage. Our Explorer plans offer travel insurance cover if your rental car is damaged or stolen during your trip. Cover is also available for the cost of replacing rental car keys if lost, stolen or damaged during the rental period. You must have a valid licence in your country of residence for the class of vehicle you’re driving overseas, regardless of local laws. You must also comply with local laws of the country in which you’re driving. Please note: travel insurance doesn’t replace the need to have a signed rental vehicle agreement or damage waiver in place.
When you’re in an unfamiliar place (especially a country where you don’t speak the language), it’s hard to know where to go for help. When you buy a World Nomads plan, you’ll have access to our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team to support you in a crisis. Whether your car has broken down in the middle of nowhere, need urgent medical attention or a referral for roadside assistance, our Emergency Assistance team can help you out in whatever part of the world you’re travelling.
There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a big trip investment only to lose everything something unexpected throws a wrench in your plans. Trip interruption coverage can help salvage the pre-paid, non-refundable trip expenses that you’ve forfeited because of an insured event that disrupted your travels. Depending on your country of residence and the plan you have chosen you may have access to certain trip interruption and travel delay benefits. Our Help Centre article on trip interruption will help with added information.
You may also need help getting your trip back on track. If you get delayed while overseas by more than 12 hours, you may need to pay for a hotel or a meal as you catch up to your itinerary. Check your Policy Wording for any conditions you need to meet: your delay might need to be a certain number of hours, (more than 12 hours for international travellers) or be caused by an insured event. Our Help Centre article has information on delayed and missed flights.
You may have camping gear in your trunk or your camera in your compartment. Thieves can be crafty enough to dodge security measures and get into locked spaces. You can make a claim for a replacement or a reimbursement of your stolen items, up to a per item and total maximum limit. Please note that if the baggage is stolen from a vehicle, there must be visible evidence of damage and forced entry into the vehicle and/or locked compartment, which is confirmed by a police report.

Backpacking is a pilgrimage many nomads embrace - the call of the open road with just the basics on your back. You might be in search of your people, the path less travelled, or setting out to find your ‘why’. Even if you like to travel with everything you need on your back, travel insurance is still a good idea in case backpacking mishaps (or worse) surprise you on the road.
World Nomads travel insurance is designed for backpacking the world’s most captivating regions from wild Patagonia to mystical Japan, and further afield.
World Nomads travel insurance plans offer cover for sudden and unforeseen costs such as if you’re injured in a traffic accident and need urgent medical treatment, if your transport carrier damages or loses your much-needed pack, or if a brazen pickpocket swipes your phone from under your nose.
Our plans offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:
Some things we do not cover include:
World Nomads offers two plans with different levels of cover and benefit limits: the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. The Explorer Plan has benefits not available in the Standard Plan and also offers travellers higher benefit limits and/or sub limits. If you’re planning on doing something extra on your trip such as scuba diving or farm work, for example, our article on covered sports and activities may help you select the optional upgrades you’ll need to add when you buy your policy. Keep in mind some types of work and high-risk activities may not be covered at all.
Backpacking often means going wherever the breeze blows you, but before you decide to cross the border into a country not specified on your Certificate of Insurance, check with our customer service team to find out if your policy will extend to that region.
You must get a Property Irregularity Report from the relevant supplier as soon as you discover the loss or damage. You’ll need it to submit your claim along with a police report, copies of the original receipts and any baggage tickets. Any reimbursement will allow for depreciation (wear and tear) as per the policy wording except if the item has been specified as high value on your Certificate of Cover.
This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
