If you’re planning a vacation to Great Britain – home to the iconic Royals, London musical theater, Stonehenge, countless museums, and famous filming locations, make sure you consider travel insurance that can protect your trip costs, your health and your luggage as you travel across the pond.

Your World Nomads’ travel insurance policy includes coverage for:

When planning a trip to the UK, the most common obstacles U.S. travelers encounter are lost or delayed luggage, and unexpected illnesses or accidents, including Covid-19-related issues.

How can your policy protect you when traveling to Great Britain?

Lost, stolen or delayed baggage cover

Imagine after that long transatlantic flight to London, you don’t see your baggage on the carousel at Heathrow airport. Or your golf clubs get stolen from the hotel lobby as you sip your English Breakfast tea. This is why baggage insurance is so important.

World Nomads may offer coverage (up to the policy limits) for loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items depending on your specific situation. Here’s more:

  • Bags that are stolen or damaged: as soon as you’ve realized your belongings have been stolen or damaged, try and file a report with your airline, tour operator, hotel manager, or the police. Travel insurance won’t cover losses due to negligence or reckless behavior. So, if you have four pitchers of beer and left your new designer sunglasses in the pub in London, you most likely won’t get reimbursed.
  • Bags are delayed: you may be covered if your bags were lost in transit to Great Britain. Make sure to file a report directly with the airline first. Then get a written report, luggage receipts, and travel documentation so you’re ready to file a claim. There is a waiting period of 12 hours before your benefits kick in. You could be reimbursed for the cost of some personal care items and a change of clothes until your bags show up. Read your policy to understand how depreciation will affect your claims for baggage and personal items loss.

Travel insurance tip 1: always keep your valuables close. Try and carry your valuables, travel documents, cash and credit cards with you at all times. Remember that if you buy anything, before or during your trip, to keep all receipts.

Overseas medical insurance and cover for Covid-19-related events

When traveling to the UK, medical insurance is very important as most private healthcare plans aren’t accepted abroad. If you get ill or are injured, you could be reimbursed for your out of pocket medical care, or an emergency visit to a dentist, or even worse, have to be transported back to the U.S.

Regarding Covid-19, it’s important that you follow any government mandates while in the UK. It’s always a good idea to wear a face mask when visiting busy tourist hotspots or on public transportation.

World Nomads’ travel plans for U.S. residents may provide coverage for specified benefits if you test positive for COVID-19. These benefits may include emergency medical, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay and trip interruption coverage if you contract COVID-19 while traveling.

You may also be eligible for trip cancellation coverage up to the policy limits for pre-paid and non-refundable travel costs such as flights, hotels stays and tours covered by your plan as part of your covered trip, if after you purchase your plan, your medical provider advises you that you are unable to travel on your scheduled departure date due to being diagnosed with COVID-19.

Travel insurance tip 2: many countries may require proof of vaccination before can enter, and some have introduced visas and travel insurance minimum requirements. Make sure you’ve got the required proof of any vaccinations so you can present them while traveling overseas.

IMPORTANT: For a claim to be covered due to a Positive Covid test, you or your traveling companion must test positive by one of the approved methods to confirm the positive test. These are:

  • lab,

  • Teladoc/telehealth, or

  • doctor’s office.

An ‘official’ (lab administered) positive test is required when filing a claim under Trip Interruption/Trip Delay due to COVID. You must have tested positive via verifiable results - this means lab-based results which include your name and the date of the test.

True Claims Stories

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.

  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely.

  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.
