Travel Insurance for Pregnancy

Learn what is and isn't covered by travel insurance if you're pregnant

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

With your new addition on board, it’s important that you have the right travel insurance to look after yourself and your unborn child.

What does travel insurance cover if I'm pregnant?

If you have to cancel your trip because your doctor certifies you're medically unfit to travel due to an injury or illness, you may be covered for your pre-paid, non-refundable transport and accommodation costs.

If you're traveling while pregnant, and you're suddenly ill or injured or you have an unexpected pregnancy complication (including an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage), all of our policies offer cover for:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospitalization
  • Ambulances
  • Transport to get you home for ongoing treatment, if medically required
  • 24-hour/7-day, multi-lingual assistance teams.

Coverage for unexpected pregnancy complications depends on your Country of Residence, the plan you have chosen, and how many weeks’ pregnant you are while traveling.

What’s not covered for pregnant travelers

  • If you decide not to travel due to your pregnancy
  • Childbirth at any time
  • A pregnancy with any complications for any pregnancy prior to buying and/or extending the policy
  • Routine pregnancy check-ups, e.g. standard ultrasounds and blood tests, pregnancy tests, etc.
  • Fertility treatments at any time
  • Expenses incurred in your home country
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, which may be exacerbated in your pregnancy.

Please note: depending on your Country of Residence, your pregnancy may be considered a pre-existing medical condition. Please take the time to read your policy wording as there are limits on your coverage.

24/7 emergency assistance support

The Emergency Assistance team can help get you find local medical facilities if needed, and in the worst-case scenario, help get you home if you’re seriously injured or ill and need to be repatriated. When you call (free from anywhere in the world), make sure you have your policy number and a contact number for where you are so we can help.

Some of the most common events our EA team has helped with include:

  • Determine if hospital care and treatment is reasonable for your condition
  • If medically necessary and agreed to by us, we can organise for you to be evacuated or repatriated
  • Help with financial assistance by determining policy coverage whilst on trip
  • Help you access medical care in your location
  • Help you find local updates on an unexpected natural disaster or a specific unfolding situation
  • Provide contact details for your government/embassy
  • And many more.

Note: coverage may depend on your past medical history, what's happened to you and any other conditions, limits or exclusions of cover as described in your policy.

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

I unexpectedly became pregnant towards the end of November. I was planning on still going on the trip until my doctor diagnosed me with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. They recommend not leaving the country due to these complications in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Travel insurance for medical repatriation

How travel insurance helps for medical repatriation.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

When you take yourself on an adventure to the far ends of the Earth—whether it’s dog-sledding with Huskies across the snow in Scandinavia or riding the waves in Japan, accidents (or illnesses) are bound to happen. And if they do, there really is no place like home when it comes to receiving the best medical care.

Differing to medical evacuation, which may be able to help transport you to the nearest medical center in an emergency, the medical repatriation benefit offers coverage to get you home for further medical treatment, recovery, or rehabilitation.

If things go sideways while you’re overseas, we’re here to help. Here are just some of the ways we can assist with medical repatriation for you and your family.

What’s covered

After World Nomads and your local doctor have given you the go-ahead to return home, then we may cover:

  • One-way economy airfare to return you to your Country of Residence; or
  • Fares for additional seats should you need to accommodate a stretcher; or
  • Flight upgrade to business class when a stretcher isn’t necessary;
  • Round-trip airfare for a medical escort when a requirement by the airline or when medically necessary.

What's not covered

While your safety and health are our utmost concern, we don’t cover everything. Always check your policy wording. Here’s an overview of what’s not covered.

We don’t cover:

  • Incidents related to the intake of alcohol or drugs (see policy wording)
  • Unnecessary upgrades or other non-cost-effective options
  • Medical expenses incurred back home
  • Accidents that are a result of irresponsible or risky behavior
  • Pre-existing medical conditions, as outlined in your policy wording.

Am I covered for COVID-19 related medical repatriation and evacuation?

Depending on your Country of Residence, you may have access to cover for repatriation if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas, your cover may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care
  • Medical hospitalisation
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending medical practitioner.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What's Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

Real life medical repatriation

Here are some of the ways we’ve been able to help Nomads get home for the medical assistance they needed:

I was driving home with my friend Nick on the back of my motorbike, when, out of nowhere, a car hit us on the side. The impact immediately trapped my right leg between my motorbike and the front of the car… Nick stood up and looked at me and the first thing he said was “Don’t look at your leg. Don’t look at your leg,”. Of course, I looked at my leg, and it was gone.

Without the 24-hour medical assistance World Nomads provided, I don’t know what we would have done.

Peter,

World Nomads customer from Australia

I fell on my side and heard the sound of dry stick breaking, I realized my leg was broken, then I just lay on the beach... The first phone call I got was from World Nomads and they basically told me, you don't worry about this Anton, just focus on getting better...and we'll take care of the rest.

Anton required surgery after breaking his leg and wrist in a fall while traveling in Thailand. We called Anton daily to check on his progress and once cover was confirmed, we took care of his medical bills and his hospital admin.

After his surgery, Anton couldn’t travel back to Iceland without help, so we sent Luke from our Emergency Assistance Team to Thailand to meet him while in hospital. Luke was also there to help Anton carry his bags and escort him home on the plane to Iceland.

Anton,

World Nomads customer from Iceland

FAQ‘s

Here are our most frequently asked questions around medical repatriation. You can also find the answers to other questions in Help Center or you can ask the customer service team.

Can my mother come and get me?

In some situations, we can send your mum over to pick you up if you need mobility support. If you’re on any kind of administrative medication, then we might send you a nurse or doctor. Check your policy wording and the conditions of your travel insurance policy to see whether you will be covered.

Can I choose the gender of my nurse or doctor?

You can ask, and we'll see what we can do.

What if I'm on really heavy drugs as pain killers while I'm coming home? Will I be allowed to transit in all countries?

There are some countries which will not allow you to enter (even transit) with certain drugs, and in these cases, we will either reroute you or discuss with your treating doctor on alternate pain killers.

What happens if I’m on life support?

That’s a really bad way to end your holiday, and we hope you never end on life support. But if you do, we will look at the best possible solution to either get you home or get your family over there to say goodbye.

Abdominal pain in Myanmar

On my second day in Burma, I woke up in the middle of the night with intense abdominal distress. I was rushed to the Asia Royal Hospital and immediately taken for evaluation and an ultrasound. I had a large mass in my abdomen and evacuated to Bangkok that evening to see a specialist. I was admitted to Bumrungrad International Hospital, where I stayed for eight days for a battery of tests, including several ultrasounds, a CT scan, and two aspirations of what turned out to be a renal cyst. After a conditional discharge, where I was restricted to rest, I was deemed stable enough to be evacuated. Two days later I was on a flight back to the U.S., where I am now continuing treatment.

Why consider travel insurance when skiing or snowboarding?

Big dumps, fresh tracks and bluebird days will make for an epic snow trip, but accidents can happen on and off the piste, even for the most experienced sliders. If you’re learning on your first trip or you’re a ski bum chasing seasons, World Nomads travel insurance can help you and your family when the unexpected hits your next winter adventure.

World Nomads loves the snow

As passionate ski bums, we’ve designed our plans to offer cover options our Nomads love the most*:

  • Skiing and boarding within resorts
  • Cross-country skiing on marked trails
  • Terrain parks, heli-skiing & heli-boarding (some plans only, check yours carefully)
  • Snowmobiling, ice skating, snow rafting & more.

*All plans are different and may require an upgrade for skiing or snowboarding cover to apply. Conditions and exclusions apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip.

What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

  • Skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports accidents
  • Piste closures
  • Cancelled and delayed flights
  • Cover for natural disasters (for example if an avalanche occurs)
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation when required
  • Cover for high value specified items (ski/winter equipment such as snowboard, skis or helmet)
  • Cover for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment.

For more information on what you may be covered for you can read our Helpdesk article on coverage when skiing and doing other winter sports. Make sure you add in your country of residence in the country picker for the most up to date information.

Coverage for some Coronavirus (COVID-19)-related events

With Coronavirus causing travel disruptions globally, it’s important that you follow any government guidelines when planning your trip overseas.

The level of cover you’ll have for any Coronavirus-related events under our Standard and Explorer plans will depend on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected. To find out more, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which goes into more detail on all the benefits, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can direct you to nearby appropriate care, talk to doctors, help with a foreign language, provide access to translation services, and keep travelers in touch with family members. If your situation is life-threatening, seek medical help immediately and let us know when you can so we can help with medical assistance and keep your friends and family informed.

What could affect the cost of my travel insurance?

There are several factors that may affect how much you’ll end up paying for your travel insurance. Depending on what your plans are, where you are going, and how much cover and optional extras, the prices may vary due to some of these key factors:

  • Any existing medical conditions
  • You and your travel partner’s age as well as your dependents ages
  • Optional extras cover such as adding specific adventure activities & sports
  • The length of your trip
  • Any high value items you want to add. You must list all high value items on your policy when you buy it.
  • The number of destinations you plan to visit.

Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, anytime, from anywhere.

What’s not covered

While there are several things we can offer coverage for, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any competition, free-style skiing / free-style snowboarding, ski/ snowboard jumping, ski-flying, ski / snowboard acrobatics, ski / snowboard stunting, or ski racing or national squad training, the use of skeletons
  • Working as a ski, snowboard or diving instructor or guide
  • Any of your ski or winter sports items lost, stolen or damaged that are unsupervised or unattended
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure
  • Any adventure activities or sports that aren’t covered by our policies
  • Any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Any costs related to illegal activities or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Key insurance tips for your ski and winter sports trip

Whether you’re a pro skier or planning your first ever winter trip overseas, these insurance tips may be helpful when planning your next winter getaway:

  • Be aware of skiing or snowboarding no go zones: don’t decide to go into back country areas without taking local advice and appropriate rescue equipment. You should follow the International Ski Federation code or the resort regulations.
  • Proof of purchase: yep, any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim.
  • It pays to be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of your ski instructor – if any seem unreliable then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Don’t get in over your head: be responsible when choosing a skiing or snowboarding destination or winter sports activity. Does it suit your experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator?
  • Keep an eye on your ski gear: don’t leave your expensive ski and winter sports gear or any other baggage unattended - those 'I spaced out” moments might not qualify for coverage.
  • Be responsible: choose a ski tour operator that promotes responsible tourism, works as part of the local community, as well as actively helps to conserve the environment.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All the information we provide is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Top tips for your hiking adventure

To make the most of your time on the trail, you might want to keep the following tips in mind:

  • It pays to be prepared: check the weather, check your equipment, and check the credentials of any instructors and guides – if they aren’t up to scratch then reconsider if it’s a smart move to go.
  • Get hike fit: hiking requires a certain amount of strength and stamina, and in some cases such as the Inca Trail, the ability to handle altitude. Be sure you are physically capable of it.
  • Be responsible: exercise responsibility when deciding on your hiking trip. Does it suit everyone’s experience level? Are you using an accredited tour operator? Make sure to wear appropriate safety gear. Some activities require you to use accredited operators and specific safety gear, so be sure to check your policy wording carefully. If you’re not sure if something is covered, contact us.
  • Keep your receipts and paperwork: any claim you make will need supporting documentation such as receipts of your purchases. Keep these with you in printed or digital form if you intend to make a claim.
Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

We also offer cover for your baggage in general so if your baggage or scuba diving gear is delayed, lost and/or damaged, you may be able to claim for a replacement, reimbursement or delay up to a per item and total maximum limit. Terms and conditions apply so be sure to check the policy wording and contact us if you have any questions.

Your coverage will vary according to your Country of Residence and whether you choose a Standard or an Explorer PlanRead your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and the terms and conditions of your coverage.

If your gear is delayed, lost or damaged, you must report the incident as soon as possible to a responsible officer for the carrier. Make sure you get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier before making a claim.

Cover for medical emergencies

Your health and safety are a priority when you’re exploring the ocean, which is why our plans cover emergency medical expenses should you become sick, get into an accident or get hurt whilst diving or snorkelling.

Cover for medical evacuation

You might be on a reef far from medical assistance on your dive, and our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility.

Emergency assistance 24/7

Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can facilitate a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re traveling, can speak multiple languages and they’re available 365 days a year.

Scuba diving: What’s not covered

While we can offer coverage for a lot of scuba diving events, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any unaccompanied dive, any dive for gain or reward, any dive which takes you deeper than your current qualification limits, or any dive deeper than 50 metres under any circumstance – sorry, but that’s a no-go for us.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to your Country of Residence.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.

Handy tips for safe scuba diving

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’ approval
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers. (Note: many products do not cover gear while in use.)
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • When scuba diving with a group, listen to your instructor or dive guide regarding the planned route and what to look out for

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

    As featured in:

Exclusions

There are of course exclusions which apply. Some of the exclusions which may apply are:

  • Cancellation or other expenses if you change your mind and decide not to go.
  • You do anything illegal (You didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?)
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies)
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions

Note: don't forget to read the policy wording when you hit the quote button as all plans are different – don't just assume you are covered in every situation, as terms and conditions, benefit limits, and exclusions may apply.

What you should look out for when considering travel insurance:

  • Make sure you correctly choose the right trip dates, age limit, and level of cover.
  • Ensure all your destinations are covered.
  • Make sure you understand what a pre-existing medical condition is under our policies (coverage varies by country of residence).
  • Some activities and sports may require an extra level of cover or may not be covered.
  • Make sure you clearly understand the benefit limits and the excess as per the level of cover you've selected.
  • Understand that there will be General Exclusions in your cover for which you won't be covered under any circumstances.
  • Make copies of travel documents and keep receipts in case you need to make a claim.

Long-term Travel Insurance

For those who aren't going home anytime soon.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Planning to travel long-term? Don't forget travel insurance to keep up with your adventures. World Nomads has you covered with flexible travel insurance designed by travelers, for travelers.

Why Choose World Nomads for long-term travel insurance?

World Nomads offers travel insurance that’s built for those who aren’t satisfied with the ordinary. Depending on your country of residence, our plans cover trips lasting up to 12 months, allowing you to travel without worry. Here’s why World Nomads stands out:

  • Buy cover while traveling: Forgot to get travel insurance before you left? No problem. With World Nomads, you can buy or extend your cover even after you’ve started your journey (waiting periods apply).
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance: Wherever you are in the world, our emergency medical assistance team is ready to help you when you need it most, connecting you with medical treatment, transportation, or whatever support you require.
  • Coverage for 150+ adventure activities, sports and experiences: Whether you’re backpacking through Europe, hiking the Andes, or volunteering in Africa, World Nomads covers more than 150 activities so you can push your boundaries without worrying about the ‘what ifs’.

Travel insurance benefits for long term travelers

Our policies come with loads of benefits, depending on the policy you buy. Whether you’re going on a long trip or a short trip, all of our policies provide cover for:

  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption if you get sick or injured at the last minute and need to make a change.
  • Emergency medical treatment, like an urgent visit to the doctor, medicine to help you get well, x-rays and hospital stays.
  • Emergency medical evacuation if you get really sick and need to be transported somewhere with better facilities.
  • Emergency repatriation if you need to be flown home to receive better care, or to bring your body back to your home country if you die overseas (it’s terrible to think about, but it happens).
  • Delayed, lost or stolen baggage.

Who might want to buy travel insurance for a long trip?

Travelers of all ages might be interested in purchasing a long stay travel insurance policy. Here are a few examples:

  • College students going on study abroad who want to travel in between quarters or semesters.
  • Working holiday makers and digital nomads.
  • Backpackers and road-trippers on a long-term holiday.
  • Digital nomads making the most of work and play.
  • New retirees heading out to explore the world with their newfound freedom.
  • Families traveling for the summer holidays.

How long can travel insurance cover me for?

Our policies are designed to be flexible . We offer long-duration policies and allow travelers to extend their cover or buy more cover while they’re on the road.

Depending on your country of residence, you can buy a World Nomads travel insurance policy for a maximum duration of six or 12 months.

To find out how long we can cover you for, select your country of residence and get a quote. While there, you can also compare our two plans, Standard and Explorer, and download the full policy wording before you buy.

What if I don’t know how long I want to travel for?

If you’re planning on exploring the world for a while, but you don’t know how long you’ll be gone for, don’t fret. You have a couple of options to ensure you’re covered while you’re away:

  • Extend your policy: You can extend most of our policies online and from overseas while traveling, as long as you extend it before it expires. Terms and conditions, and limitations apply so check the policy wording details before you purchase to make sure this will suit your needs.
  • Purchase a new policy: If your policy has expired, you can purchase a new travel insurance policy while you’re still traveling. Just note that there may be a waiting period for full cover to apply (you can be covered straight away if you're injured in an accident after you buy a policy). Your policy wording will have full details to understand the cover, terms and conditions, limits and exclusions.
  • Purchase and track your policies with your World Nomads membershipA free membership gives you access to all of our great content and safety advice. And if you buy travel insurance with us, your membership allows you to manage and view multiple policies in one place online, making it easy to buy more policies as needed, and access online claims forms. Make sure you log-in before purchasing each new policy.

Tips for long-term travelers

  1. Volunteering or working abroad?
Ensure you’re covered for the specific activities you’ll be engaging in, whether it’s teaching English, working on a farm, or volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary. World Nomads offers coverage for a wide range of volunteer and work activities, so you can focus on making a difference.
  1. Students on a gap year or exchange
If you're a student embarking on a gap year or participating in an exchange program, long-term travel insurance is essential. It covers you for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and even the loss of important documents like your passport.
  1. Stay connected with us
Keep a copy of your policy details and emergency contact numbers handy. Whether it’s a sudden illness or an unforeseen event, knowing how to quickly get in touch with us can save you time and stress.

Don't let the unexpected derail your long-term adventure. Get a quote from World Nomads today.

What’s not covered by travel insurance?

All travel insurance policies have exclusions and limitations. Here are some of ours - we won't provide cover for:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?) Be sure to respect both the local laws and mores of your host countries.
  • Medical evacuation or repatriation for any incidents related to drug and alcohol abuse, or that is not pre-authorized by a physician.
  • Trip cancellation for events that occurred before your policy was purchased (natural disaster, strike, etc.).
  • Not having visas or passports issued on time or not properly fulfilling the entry requirements of your destination.
  • Leaving your gear behind, or not keeping an eye on your things and they get stolen.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (remember it's not regular health insurance; it's for medical emergencies).
  • Some pre-existing conditions, especially those not stable and controlled.
  • Cancelling your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are terms, limits, conditions and exclusions that may apply. Always read your policy carefully before you buy and make sure it’s right for you and if you have more questions get in touch.

Severed Nerve

I was opening a bag of potatoes with a knife. The knife slipped and cut my finger on my left hand. I attended the local emergency department in Aix-en-Provence at no charge (and was) referred to Clinique Axium the following day. I underwent micro surgery and had two follow up appointments at the Clinique, along with having a specialised splint made to keep my finger in a bent position to enable healing.

There’s one thing our travelers all say they want more of… more time. More time planning their trip, more time at their destinations and much more time relaxing and enjoying their adventure.

No one tells us they want to spend their precious time sorting out travel insurance, but they know it’s a consideration, whether they be a backpacker, long term traveler or gap student.

Online Travel Insurance

All we need is some basic information on who you are, where you’re going and how long you’ll be gone for, and we’ll generate your instant quote outlining your travel insurance coverage and limitations.

To give you certainty of coverage and confidence in traveling, we’ve made sure all our online travel insurance options include:

We’ve also designed it in an easy-to-understand format, clearly outlining the Standard and Explorer levels of cover, to help you choose the right travel insurance cover for your break.

What and where you’re covered for is very important to our travelers and if you’re already overseas it’s not too late - you can still purchase online now.

World Nomads Travel Insurance at a glance:

When considering travel insurance for your next overseas holiday, you want to know that cover will be available for all those unexpected events that may happen. World Nomads Standard and Explorer plans may offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for the following, when you need it the most:

  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance for a range of events including medical emergencies, multi-lingual assistance, and assistance with flight amendments when your trip has not gone as planned.
  • Overseas medical cover that includes cover for hospitalization, day surgery and out-patient treatment, dental cover, and visits to registered medical practitioners.
  • Cover for delayed, lost or stolen luggage and valuables. Need to cover your tech or sports gear, or travelling with a designer dress? Some plans may allow you to upgrade your cover for high value baggage and personal items.
  • Cover for some of your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses when you’ve had to unexpectedly cancel your trip for a covered reason.
  • Cover for more than 150 adventure activities, sports and experiences. Cover for different types of types of activities such as rock climbing, snowboarding, bungee jumping, and snorkelling.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events. You may be covered for trip cancellation and medical treatment while on your trip, depending on your chosen level of cover and country of residence.
  • Cover when your trip is delayed, interrupted or cancelled and you are stuck at the airport, or your trip is postponed indefinitely.
  • And much more including travel insurance content, Help centre FAQs, some crazy true claims stories, and info on travel insurance for key trending destinations and activities.

Some handy questions to ask yourself before purchasing travel insurance:

  • Will I need a visa for the destinations I am visiting? Can I travel to a specific country or region or not? Make sure you do your research on all countries and regions you are planning to visit.
  • What activities do I have planned? Ensure you have the right level of cover for your planned activities, sports and experiences.
  • How long am I travelling for? When buying World Nomads travel insurance online you’ll need to enter a start date, and end date of travel.
  • Who am I traveling with, and do they need coverage, too?
  • Does my destination have any travel insurance requirements? Some countries require foreign travellers to purchase a travel insurance policy that at least covers the medical costs associated with treating COVID-19 and other diseases.
  • Do I need any travel insurance add-ons, for example, for high value tech items and sports gear?

At World Nomads, we strive to deliver not just travel insurance cover, but also some added value through our additional services such as:

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

Travel Insurance for Natural Disasters

Find out how earthquakes, volcanoes or tsunamis may be covered by travel insurance.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Natural disasters not only cause physical harm, they also shut down airports, wipe out accommodation and cancel trips. While natural disasters are unpredictable, some give off enough warning so you're not caught off guard.

While you can’t control the weather, you can do your part to insure yourself against unexpected weather events. If you don’t want to risk it, you should consider travel insurance on your next trip just in case it gets cancelled, or you become stranded overseas and need to pay for additional accommodation and flights.

What’s covered

If you’re affected by a natural disaster, you may be able to make a claim for:

  • Trip cancellation: You must do what you can to minimize your expense (which may mean cancelling your booking) and notify us as soon as possible within seven days.
  • Trip interruption: You can make a claim for pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements that you haven’t been able to use, such as flights and other types of transportation, tours and hotels.

For World Nomads policies that do cover natural disasters in one way or another, you'll need to have bought a policy before the natural disaster event is known and do everything you can to minimize your expenses.

For example, if you’re a UK resident, you’ll be covered for reasonable additional accommodation (room only) and transport costs (Economy Class) you incur during your trip, if you’ve taken out the Explorer plan and you:

  • Cannot use your booked accommodation during your trip due to a natural catastrophe.
  • If you need to move to the nearest place of safety due to a natural catastrophe.

Always read the policy wording as you go through the purchase path, as there are terms and conditions, limits and exclusions on the cover. Cover will depend on your Country of Residence and which plan – Standard vs Explorer – you buy.

Travel insurance tip: If your destination is impacted by a natural catastrophe or severe weather then you must contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible so we are advised of the situation. If you do not comply with this condition, it may impact what we pay you for your claim.

What’s not covered by travel insurance in the event of a natural disaster?

  • If you don’t follow the advice of the authorities.
  • If you hang around to watch what happens.
  • If you buy a policy after an event becomes known.

If you have any questions about how World Nomads travel insurance covers natural disasters, please contact us.

Travel insurance doesn't cover everything. All of the information we provide is a brief summary. It does not include all terms, conditions, limitations, exclusions and termination provisions of the plans described. Coverage may not be the same or available for residents of all countries, states or provinces. Please carefully read your policy wording for a full description of coverage.

If you’re traveling to a region that’s known for natural disasters, it's a good idea to do some research to see if there have been any warnings. If you buy a policy after an event is known, and the natural disaster impacts your trip, you won’t be covered for any expenses.

Tsunami in Sumatra.

One night, I was on the surf charter boat, in the Mentawai Islands, Sumatra, Indonesia. There was an earthquake and tsunami that hit and completely destroyed the boat. The boat caught fire. The fire spread rapidly and we had to abandon ship. The boat along with all personal belongs were completely destroyed. The fire spread so quickly that there was no time to collect any belongings. The only things I ended up with were the shorts I was wearing, my watch and wedding ring. Almost all my possessions and documentation were on the boat and destroyed.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about natural disasters and insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center.

  • Will I be covered if my trip is delayed due to a natural disaster?
If your trip is delayed due to a natural disaster, you may be covered for travel delay benefits. However, this will depend on the plan you purchased and your Country of Residence. Always read your policy to find out what is the minimum number of hours required there is for a trip delay. If a natural disaster delays your trip by the specified number of hours, your travel insurance plan can reimburse you for your reasonable and necessary prepaid trip expenses such as meals, hotel rooms, communication and transportation, up to the benefit limit of your plan.
  • What if I change my mind about traveling to destination due to a possible natural disaster?
Unfortunately, you will not be covered if you cancel your trip due to fear of travel or just changing your mind. The above features and benefits are a summary of  cover only. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.
