How does World Nomads Travel Insurance work?

A true claim story

  • Never travel without insurance. This was the first time I ever purchased travel insurance and I am so glad I did. A few days into my trip to Spain I twisted my foot heading down to the metro. Thanks to World Nomads I was able to get medical attention in Spain and since, as luck would have it, I had a fracture that required surgery, they got me a flight home the next day. Filing a claim was surprisingly easy and when the claim was finally processed, I was reimbursed for all of my expenses including things like the extra week in the hotel I didn't get to take advantage of.
    L. De Jesus,
    U.S. resident in Spain
  • I recently had a serious injury traveling on my own & the team was amazing. Being confused with a brain injury they took care of everything. Claiming was no problem, they were on the phone constantly to see if all was OK. I can't recommend them enough. Absolutely fantastic & l will always travel with World Nomads Insurance. Thanks guys for getting me home safely
    A.Brennan,
    Australian in Thailand
  • Just wanted to say thank you to this wonderful insurance company. When my husband notified the company that I had suffered a life threatening pulmonary embolism, World Nomads took care of everything. They contacted the hospital immediately and checked on my situation, A wonderful nurse called me everyday, speaking to doctors and making sure I understood what had happened and the course of my treatment. I would recommend World Nomads to every traveler. We are still travelling and until we return home will continue to insure with them.
    K.McMahon,
    Australian in Thailand
  • I was bitten by a monkey at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a nearby clinic and they gave me a rabies shot, antibiotics to take for 4 days, pain medicine, and anti-inflammatory medicine.

    Canadian in Malaysia

  • What does World Nomads travel insurance cover?

World Nomads offers travel insurance plans tailored to meet the diverse needs of our global travellers. Depending on your country of residence and the plan that you have selected, you could be covered for:

    • Overseas medical expenses
    • Lost or stolen baggage
    • Personal belongings
    • Trip cancellations
    • Coronavirus-related events
    • Over 150 activities, sports and experiences
    • Natural disasters

Are there any exclusions or limitations to travel insurance coverage?

As much as we would love to cover every single unexpected event or unforeseen scenario that happens when traveling, unfortunately we cannot do that. World Nomads has specific terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations clearly stated in all our policy wordings. Here are just some of the main exclusions to be aware of:

    • Overseas medical expenses: Travel insurance offers cover for overseas dental and medical expenses, but terms and conditions apply depending on your country of residence and plan selected.
    • Travel warnings: If you travel to a destination with a 'Do not travel' warning from your home country’s government body, you won't be covered.
    • Existing medical conditions: Existing medical conditions may not be covered unless specifically stated as covered in the policy wording.
    • Adventure activities: There are specific exclusions, limitations and conditions for many of our activities and sports.
    • Change of mind: Simply changing your mind or reluctance to travel isn't covered.
    • Unlawful acts: Any losses arising from unlawful or dishonest acts won't be covered.

Always refer to the specific terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of your policy wording to understand the full scope of coverage. Always ensure you buy the right policy that aligns with your travel plans and needs. If you need more information visit our Help Centre, or get in touch.

  • Can I buy or extend with World Nomads travel insurance while overseas?

With a World Nomads policy, you can buy cover anytime, anywhere. Plus, if you decide to stay longer somewhere, we are happy to extend your policy if it's done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If you buy a policy while traveling overseas, there may be a waiting period before your cover is activated. Learn more about buying while traveling here.

  • Does World Nomads cover adventure activities?
Yes, with World Nomads travel insurance you have access to 150+ activities, including trekking, skiing, rock climbing, scuba diving and more. Please be aware that there are specific terms, conditions, and exclusions when selecting certain activities and sports. Always read your policy wording carefully.
  • How do I file a claim?

Making a claim is a straightforward process designed to assist you during unforeseen circumstances while travelling. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

    1. Report the incident: Contact us as soon as possible after the incident occurs. Provide details about what happened and gather any necessary documentation, like police reports or medical records.
    1. Sign in: Sign into your World Nomads membership. Use the links to 'Make a claim' once signed into your membership dashboard.
    1. Submit documents: Depending on your claim type, you may need to submit documents such as medical bills, receipts for additional expenses, or proof of trip interruption or cancellation.
    1. Follow up: Stay in touch with us and provide any additional information we may request promptly. This will help expedite the claims process.
    1. Review your policy: Familiarise yourself with your policy's terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions to understand what's covered.

Remember, the sooner you initiate the claim and provide all required documentation, the quicker your claim will be processed. Always keep your policy details and emergency contact numbers handy when travelling.

  • Can I cancel my travel insurance policy and receive a refund?

World Nomads offers trip cancellation coverage for unforeseen events but it will depend on your country of residence and the type of travel insurance plan you’ve chosen. If you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, our travel plans may help save you money and time, but if you don’t have insurance, you could be paying for a trip you were unable to take and experience many more headaches.

If you decide that you don’t want to travel or can’t travel due to unforeseen events, you can cancel the policy up until the day before you start your trip, and a refund will be considered, provided:

    1. You haven’t started your trip;
    1. You haven’t made a claim; and
    1. You don’t want to make a claim or exercise any other right under the policy.

All you need to do is sign into your membership, choose your policy and follow the links to cancel before your policy Departure date. If you need to cancel, you may contact World Nomads.

Please note that on a single trip policy, we don't refund any unused portion of your premium if you return home early for any reason. On Annual Multi-Trip policies, you may request a refund for any unused period premium but refunds available will vary depending on your country of residence.

  • Will travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

World Nomads does not offer cover for medical conditions which exist before you buy or extend your policy. However, there are over 40 medical conditions that we may offer cover for depending on your country of residence. In some cases, some pre-existing medical conditions which exist at the time you buy your policy and where you meet specific requirements may be automatically covered.

Carefully consider your medical history, as well as the health of your close relatives, others in your traveling party and anyone else, as your and their conditions (past or present) may affect your trip and travel insurance cover. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. You can always reach out and contact us if you have any questions.

  • Am I covered for countries other than the ones I list on my policy?

To make sure you’re covered for all the countries you’re planning on travelling to you must select them all when you purchase your travel insurance with World Nomads.

If you’ve already started travelling and are considering a side trip to a country other than those you specified, there are a few things you should know.

When you get a quote, you need to select the countries you plan to visit, as you won't be able to add any countries after you have purchased a policy. If you try to add a country that we don’t cover (e.g. Iraq, North Korea, Sudan), you won’t be able to continue with your quote. If you choose certain regions like ‘Asia’ or ‘Worldwide’, rather than individual countries, please note there may still be some countries excluded from coverage; for example, due to sanction exclusions in the policy wording.

‘Do Not Travel’ government travel warnings can be issued or changed without notice at any time, so always check the status with your relevant government body before you buy a policy and before you pay anything towards your trip, either deposits or the full amount.

How to successfully submit a travel insurance claim in five simple steps

Hey there, fellow nomad! So, you've had an unexpected hiccup during your journey, and now you're wondering how to navigate the process of submitting a travel insurance claim. Don't worry; we're here to help!

As an experienced travel insurance provider with over 25 years’ experience in the travel insurance industry, we have paid out thousands of claims.

We know it's not an exciting process, but it is crucial. We're here to guide you through it in five simple steps, ensuring you get the support you need when you need it the most.

How to submit a travel insurance claim in five simple steps

Step 1: Know your policy

Before diving into the claim process, it's important to familiarize yourself with your travel insurance policy. Take some time to review the coverage details, including what's included and what's not. This means reading your Certificate of Insurance once you have purchased a policy and that email hits your inbox. Understanding your policy will help you determine if your situation is eligible for a claim.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Now that you're ready to make a claim, gather all the necessary documents to support your case. This may include:

  • Copies of your travel itinerary and booking confirmations
  • Receipts for any expenses incurred due to the incident (e.g., medical bills, accommodation, transportation)
  • Police reports or incident reports if applicable
  • Medical certificates or documentation from healthcare providers
  • Any other relevant documentation related to the incident

Step 3: Submit your claim online

Making a claim is as easy as a few clicks! Visit our website and navigate to the claims section. You'll need to log in via the World Nomads’ member portal and find the online form where you can enter all the required information and upload your documents. Be sure to provide accurate details to expedite the processing of your claim. If you can’t login through the member portal, then you can contact the Claims Services team who can take your claim details over the phone, email or fax.

Step 4: Follow-up as needed

Once you've submitted your claim, keep an eye on your email inbox for any updates or requests for additional information from our claims team. Promptly respond to any inquiries to ensure the smooth processing of your claim. We're here to assist you every step of the way!

Step 5: Stay patient

While we strive to process claims as quickly as possible, some cases may require additional review or verification. We appreciate your patience while we work diligently to resolve your claim. We're committed to providing timely assistance and support throughout the process.

Tips when submitting a travel insurance claim:

  1. Do: provide complete and accurate information when submitting your claim. Submit your claim forms and supporting documents promptly to avoid any delays in processing.

  2. Do: keep copies of all documents and correspondence related to your claim for your records. Ensure that all documents and information provided in your claim forms is accurate and truthful to avoid any complications or potential denial of your claim.

  3. Do: inform us as soon as possible after the incident occurs to initiate the claims process.

  4. Do: stay in communication with us throughout the claims process and promptly respond to any requests for additional information.

  5. Do: follow the instructions provided by us regarding the claims process, including any required forms or documentation.

  6. Do Not: delay in submitting your claim or providing requested information, as this may prolong the process. Follow up regularly to ensure progress.

  7. Do Not: attempt to falsify or exaggerate claims, as this can result in denial of coverage.

  8. Do Not: assume that every expense will be covered by your travel insurance policy. Review your policy carefully to understand what is covered and what is not covered.

  9. Do Not: ignore exclusions listed in your travel insurance policy. Understand what is excluded from coverage to avoid surprises during the claims process.

  10. Do Not: assume that your claim will be denied without understanding the reasons for denial. Seek clarification from the claims team if necessary.

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the policy wording for the full details on what’s not covered as well as the terms, conditions, limitation and exclusions. If you are unsure of anything, please contact us for help.

Travel insurance when going scuba diving

Simple and flexible travel insurance to keep you safe on your next dive trip. Buy at home or while traveling, and claim online from anywhere in the world.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Going on an underwater adventure?

Calm waters, crystal clear visibility and a bulletproof dive plan might make for the perfect underwater adventure, but accidents can happen. Whether you're learning or you’ve done hundreds of dives, World Nomads travel insurance can help take the pressure off you and your family if the unexpected sinks your next dive trip.

What types of dives are covered?

As passionate divers ourselves, we’ve designed our plans to cover dives from the Great Blue Hole to The Yongala, and we can offer cover for:

  • Recreational scuba diving (qualified divers up to 50m on some plans)
  • Discover scuba dives (with qualified instructors)
  • Shark cage diving, cavern, cave and wreck diving (some plans only, check yours carefully)
  • Snorkeling, island escapes, live-aboard trips and more.

Keep in mind that all plans are different and may require an additional premium when going scuba diving to specific depths depending on the plan chosen and your Country of Residence. Terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions apply. Read the policy wording carefully to choose the right plan and/or adventure sport option for your trip.

Choosing the right policy for you

We offer two plans – Standard and Explorer – each of which offers different levels of coverage. It is up to you to choose what plan has the right level of coverage to meet your travel needs and that matches your specific scuba diving plans.

For more information on what you may be covered for, check out our article on specific coverage when scuba diving. Make sure you add in your country of residence for accurate information.

Cover for your scuba diving gear

We know that scuba diving equipment such as scuba tanks, fins BCD and regulator, underwater film and photography equipment can be expensive, so we can offer cover for high-value items.

We also offer cover for your baggage in general so if your baggage or scuba diving gear is delayed, lost and/or damaged, you may be able to claim for a replacement, reimbursement or delay up to a per item and total maximum limit. Terms and conditions apply so be sure to check the policy wording and contact us if you have any questions.

Your coverage will vary according to your Country of Residence and whether you choose a Standard or an Explorer PlanRead your policy wording for details on maximum benefit limits, exclusions, and the terms and conditions of your coverage.

If your gear is delayed, lost or damaged, you must report the incident as soon as possible to a responsible officer for the carrier. Make sure you get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier before making a claim.

Cover for medical emergencies

Your health and safety are a priority when you’re exploring the ocean, which is why our plans cover emergency medical expenses should you become sick, get into an accident or get hurt whilst diving or snorkelling.

Cover for medical evacuation

You might be on a reef far from medical assistance on your dive, and our policies include coverage if you need to be evacuated to a medical facility.

Emergency assistance 24/7

Having an emergency in a foreign country can be overwhelming but buying a World Nomads policy means you’ll have access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. Our Emergency Assistance team can facilitate a range of services in whatever part of the world you’re traveling, can speak multiple languages and they’re available 365 days a year.

Scuba diving: What’s not covered

While we can offer coverage for a lot of scuba diving events, there are also things we just won’t cover. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Any unaccompanied dive, any dive for gain or reward, any dive which takes you deeper than your current qualification limits, or any dive deeper than 50 metres under any circumstance – sorry, but that’s a no-go for us.
  • If you travel against medical advice or neglect to adhere to government ‘Do Not Travel’ warnings issued prior to departure.
  • Any pre-existing medical condition unless otherwise expressly stated in your policy.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed as covered in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Expenses you incur after you return to your Country of Residence.
  • Working or participating professionally in any activity or sport.

Handy tips for safe scuba diving

  • Only dive if you are fit to do so. You may need to consult your medical practitioner before going scuba diving and get a ‘fit to travel’ approval
  • Check all your gear to ensure everything is in good working order and then do a buddy check of your fellow divers. (Note: many products do not cover gear while in use.)
  • Only dive with reputable companies using licensed, seaworthy boats and well-maintained dive equipment. Make sure you check your instructor's credentials.
  • When scuba diving with a group, listen to your instructor or dive guide regarding the planned route and what to look out for

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel Insurance for Stolen or Lost Passports

How travel insurance could help if your passport is stolen while traveling.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Having your passport stolen can cause significant interruptions to your trip. While you can easily replace a stolen pair of shoes or a t-shirt, it is much more complicated to replace a passport.

Some of our travel insurance policies can come in handy with your emergency passport expenses, and others can help with related expenses such as rearranging your trip while you wait for your replacement or cancellation if your trip can't go ahead.

Important: Depending on the policy you buy and your Country of Residence, there are terms and conditions, limitations, and exclusions that will apply. Your policy wording will always have the full details of what you’re covered for. If you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.

What to do if your passport is stolen while traveling

Here are the steps to follow if your passport is stolen while traveling:

Step 1:

If your passport is stolen, you must, as soon as possible, notify your government’s nearest passport office or report the loss to the nearest diplomatic or consular mission. You must provide us with copies of all documentation provided by the government agency.

Step 2:

Report the passport theft or loss to the police as well as to the common carrier, service provider or other local authority (e.g. tour operator/accommodation/travel provider manager or security personnel) as soon as reasonably possible after discovery. If you do not comply with this condition, it may impact your ability to make a claim under this policy.

Step 3:

Provide a copy of the full, written police report of what has happened with your claim. If in exceptional circumstances you cannot notify the local police or other appropriate authority (i.e. due to imminent departure), you must notify the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team or us as soon as reasonably possible.

What’s not covered by World Nomads travel insurance?

  • If you leave your passport behind
  • If you don’t take proper precautions to protect your passport
  • If you don’t obtain a written police report if it's stolen
  • If customs or another government body confiscates your passport
  • A new passport - cover is to get you an emergency passport, not the full replacement cost

The above features and benefits are a summary of cover only. Take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Travel Insurance for Medical Evacuation

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Whether you’re trekking through the Eurasian Steppe, surfing in Maui, scuba diving off the coast of Thailand, or skiing in Canada, accidents or sickness can happen at any time during your trip. And if it’s bad enough, you may need to be medically evacuated or repatriated for ongoing medical care.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Teams, and doctors and nurses have seen some horrific accidents and illnesses and have helped thousands of travelers be medically evacuated to appropriate facilities or repatriated home so they can fully recover.

What’s covered

If you’ve selected the right policy for the activity you’re doing and it’s medically necessary, there’s cover in all our policies for medical evacuation, as approved, by:

  • Air ambulance
  • Sea level aircraft
  • Helicopter
  • Ground ambulance
  • Commercial airline upgrade
  • Commercial airline with medical accompaniment

When we determine you’re medically fit to travel, we may decide to:

  • Transport you to other medical care facilities; and/or
  • Repatriate you to your Country of Residence if you’re declared medically unfit to continue your trip.

Cover is up to the amount shown in the Summary of Cover and is subject to our Emergency Assistance Team or us, on the advice of a medical practitioner appointed by us in consultation with your medical practitioner overseas, first deciding that:

  • Transportation is medically necessary; and
  • The style and timing of the transportation are reasonable and appropriate; and
  • You’re medically fit to be evacuated; and
  • You should be transferred to your Country of Residence.

How do I get emergency assistance

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as reasonably possible so that our teams can support you from the time you fall sick or get injured until the time you get home.

So that our Emergency Assistance Teams can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Am I covered if I get Coronavirus (COVID-19) while traveling?

Depending on your Country of Residence and the travel insurance plan you choose, you may also have access to Coronavirus (COVID-19) coverage for certain events including evacuation. Some of our plans offer:

  • Emergency medical cover, evacuation and/or repatriation if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas.
  • Cover for some additional Coronavirus-related events such as cancellation following a diagnosis to assist our travelers on the Explorer Plan.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What's Covered for Coronavirus article which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and the Plan you choose.

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered get in touch.

FAQs

What is the difference between medical evacuation and repatriation?

Emergency medical evacuations are required when you have a life-threatening condition, and the local medical facility can’t look after you. In this case if you’re not evacuated to a hospital in another city or country you could suffer from a serious health complication, or even worse. Medical repatriation is when we decide its medically necessary to return you to your Country of Residence because you are severely sick or injured. For example, if you’re traveling in Mexico and you get seriously injured or sick and we decide you’re better off being treated back in Australia, we can bring you home under medical supervision.

How will you help me if I need to be evacuated?

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team's trained staff will help with medical problems, including locating nearest medical facilities and, if required, arranging your medical evacuation home. They can also assist with locating the nearest embassies and consulates as well as keeping you in touch with your close relatives and your employer in an emergency.

Travel insurance for Trip Resumption

Learn if we could help you get back on track after your trip's been interrupted.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Trip resumption: what will be covered by travel insurance?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return home because you were sick or injured overseas, or one of your close relatives has been hospitalized or has died, or a severe weather event has impacted your holiday, certain World Nomads policies offer coverage for reasonable transport and accommodation expenses to get you back on the road so that you can finish your trip.

What am I covered for if my trip has been cut short?

Every World Nomads policy will differ depending on your selected plan and your Country of Residence. As part of our Trip Interruption coverage, and depending on which plan you purchase – Standard vs Explorer - you may be covered (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • An unexpected illness or injury
  • A death in the family, yourself, or someone in your traveling party
  • Trip interruption expenses – when a travel interruption over a certain number of hours occurs and you need to cover the essentials such as, phone, internet, refreshments or additional travel and accommodation. Terms and conditions apply.
  • A missed connection
  • An official government authority has issued a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning to a specific region or country and that warning was first given after you purchased the policy and after you booked the arrangements.
  • You or a member of your traveling party are directly involved in a motor vehicle, railway, air or marine accident resulting in your inability to meet your connecting transport.
  • Theft or damage of your or a member of your traveling party’s passport (excluding government confiscation for any reason not related to damage), travel documents or credit cards.
  • Cancellation of a pre-paid, overseas tour, conference, music concert, international sporting event, funeral or wedding, or you being forced to use alternative public transport to arrive on time to attend this event.
  • And many more.

You should read your policy wording carefully to understand what you will be covered for when it comes to trip interruption. Particularly the defined Insured Events, which relate specifically to the cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

Your policy still needs to be valid for the period of your resumed trip and needs to be the one that you were traveling on when you had to return home.

Make sure that you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while traveling.

Am I covered if my trip is interrupted by a pandemic?

It depends on which policy you have chosen. As much as we would love to cover every possible Coronavirus (COVID-19) scenario, that‘s not what travel insurance is designed for. Some exclusions may apply for epidemics, pandemics or World Health Organization (WHO) declarations of a public health emergency of international concern. When they apply, these exclusions are outlined in your policy wording.

To find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

Coverage depends on your Country of Residence and varies between plans.

Trip resumption: what's not covered by travel insurance?

  • Any expenses incurred while you're at home
  • Expenses to get you back on your trip if you went home because you're homesick
  • A business class upgrade where you've been flying budget airlines
  • Resumption if your policy has expired.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. There are item limits and conditions and exclusions that apply, so for more information check out our article on trip resumption and read your policy carefully before you buy.

Be prepared if you need to claim for trip resumption.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors' reports/death certificates
  • Medical history (ruling out pre-existing conditions)
  • New flight tickets

Travel Insurance Tip: Some, but not all, of our policies offer coverage for some insured events resulting in cancellation, trip interruption and trip resumption. Please take the time to read your policy wording as there are limits on your coverage depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you buy.
