Travel Insurance for a trip to Germany

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Germany

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Germany has long been a popular travel destination for British tourists. More than two million make the trip annually, drawn to Deutschland’s verdant forests, historic castles, and fast autobahn. But before you jet off to try Germany’s world-famous ale and Bratwurst sausages, you may want to consider buying travel insurance just in case the unexpected occurs.

What’s covered?

Let’s face it, most of us are busy planning our next trip even before our last one has ended. As important as the itinerary is, so too is travel insurance.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each provides different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. World Nomads offers cover for the following:

  • Extended stays if you choose to stay longer
  • Overseas emergency medical cover
  • Cover for baggage and personal belongings like tech equipment or sports gear
  • More than 150+ activities, sports, and experiences.
  • Trip cancellation
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events

You can purchase a World Nomads policy before leaving the United Kingdom, or while you are en route, but do note that coverage is only available from the date marked on the policy certificate.

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Germany?

As picturesque as this part of Europe is, Germany’s Alpine region is prone to avalanches and wild weather which can derail a winter holiday. Also, the roads across Germany can be dangerous, especially the very fast Autobahn motorway. Also, activities such as hiking, biking, or skiing come with the risk of injury, which can prove costly and ruin your trip if you’re uninsured.

With Coronavirus (COVID-19) as a consideration, it’s possible that you may contract the virus mid-trip and need to alter or cancel your plans. World Nomads’ Explorer plan factors in provisions for some COVID19-related events (terms and exclusions do apply). For all the details including benefit limits and exclusions under our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article.

Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 and can help you know if attending a hospital is medically necessary, help you find the nearest medical facilities (this can be beneficial in out of the way places), liaise with your treating doctor to make sure that your treatment plan is appropriate, any assist with language barriers you may face.

What to look out for when travelling around Germany?

Always be aware of your surroundings and always remain vigilant about your possessions.

If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that pickpockets are active across Germany, you may encounter political protests or, although unlikely, find yourself caught up in a terrorist attack, so it’s important to keep up to date with the UK Government’s Travel Advisory page.

Here is a brief sample of what we cover and why it could come in handy when travelling around Germany. Please check your Policy Wording for our complete list:

  • Explorer Plan holders can take advantage of provisions for those costs associated with unexpected natural disasters as long as there wasn’t a prior warning in place.
  • For loss or theft of personal belongings, both cover levels offer compensation, depending on the circumstances.
  • If you’re planning to drive on the Autobahn, the Explorer Plan covers rental car excess in the event you have an accident, but you must hold the correct licence; adhere to local laws; and have the necessary vehicle insurance (mopeds and bicycles are not permitted on this stretch of motorway).
  • Cover for overseas emergency dental. This cover only relates to dental emergencies. that occur during your trip. Cosmetic procedures or check-ups will not be covered.
  • Adventure-seekers are advised to list the activities they’re planning to undertake in the policy detail. However, the benefit limits, general conditions and special exclusions will be different for each policy. That’s why you need to read your Policy Wording carefully to make sure your chosen activities will be covered.
  • In the case of Coronavirus, if you or a member of your travelling party are diagnosed with COVID-19 and you must cancel your trip, we will pay the non-refundable portion of your pre-paid travel arrangements. The COVID-19 diagnosis must be made after policy purchase (other COVID-19 provisions apply).

What’s not covered?

Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your Policy Wording.
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a government ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ warning.
  • Illness associated with a failure to comply with preventative measures for the travel region, as outlined by the World Health Organization.
  • Loss or damage to luggage due to age, wear and tear, loss of value. Damage to sporting equipment caused while in use.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the Policy Wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated back to the UK once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Traveler Tip: British residents are eligible for a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. The GHIC or EHIC entitles you to state provided medical treatment that may become necessary during your trip. The EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance and doesn’t cover medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or that considered non-urgent.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Backpacker travel insurance

If something unexpected happens, we’ve got your back – pack or no pack.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Just you and the open road, the basics on your back, the world at your feet. Backpacking is a rite of passage for many nomads seeking maximum experience for minimum expense.

You might be setting out to find your crew or yourself, to connect with a destination or frolic at every festival.

But even if you can do without your creature comforts, travel insurance may still be a good idea.

World Nomads covers backpackers residing in Brazil as they travel all over the world with travel insurance designed for backpacking in Europe, US, Canada, Australia, China, the Caribbean, and more.

Why buy backpacker insurance?

If your travels take you on the wrong kind of adventure – like a sudden illness or injury, a freak natural disaster, stolen or misdirected belongings, or an emergency that means you have to head home pronto – travel insurance may be able to help you with expenses. Plus, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is here for you in a crisis, providing guidance and pre-approving costs.

What does backpacker insurance cover?

World Nomads supports backpacking adventures of all types, with protection for:

  • Trip cancellation for the recovery of non-refundable trip costs.
  • Emergency medical expenses for accidents, injuries or sicknesses.
  • Emergency evacuation for hospital transfers or a flight back to your home.
  • Baggage delays on route to your destination.
  • Trip interruption for emergencies that can cut your trip short.

Travel insurance tips for backpackers

Here are some pointers to help keep you covered while backpacking.

  • Are you traveling long-term, you lucky thing? You can extend your policy or buy travel insurance while abroad (waiting periods may apply) even if you don’t have a return ticket. World Nomads policies offer coverage for up to six months at a time.
  • For you, does backpacking = hiking or mountain climbing? Make sure you select the right policy for your adventure sport or activities. Remember, you can’t upgrade your coverage after you purchase, so it’s important to get this right on the first go.
  • While having fun is a must-do, risky behavior isn’t covered. Yes, you can enjoy a few drinks and take the road less traveled but incidents that occur while under the influence may not be covered under your plan.
  • Going wherever the breeze blows? If you want to cross the border, check with our customer service team first as your policy may not apply in other countries.

When you buy a World Nomads travel insurance policy, your coverage has been crafted by passionate travelers who have lugged backpacks, battled bedbugs and waited in line for the restroom too. For trip ideas and tips, check out our article on backpacking dos and don’ts and much more.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

What to do if you’ve left home without travel insurance

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

1. You can purchase travel insurance whilst travelling

Planning an overseas holiday can be an overwhelming experience. With so many arrangements to be made prior to leaving, it’s easy to forget travel insurance during the flurry of preparations.

If you’ve already arrived at your overseas holiday destination and you realise that you forgot to buy travel insurance before leaving New Zealand, don’t panic. You can visit the World Nomads website at any time of the day or night to purchase a policy.

Similarly, New Zealand travellers whose travel insurance policies will expire during their trips, but who wish to stay on holidays longer, may also extend or buy a new policy.

2. Always check the terms and conditions of your policy

When you’re on your overseas holiday, you don’t want to spend too long sitting in your hotel room reading through the fine print of an insurance policy. As there are so many exciting places to explore, you just want to get out and about. It can be tempting to rush into buying a policy, without taking the time to read through the Summary of Benefits and exclusions beforehand.

However, to avoid any surprises when making a claim, it’s a smart idea to become familiar with the various limits, benefits, available upgrades, terms and conditions before you buy a policy.

If you buy travel insurance during your overseas holiday, you are still subject to a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this period.

However, if you have an accident and sustain a serious injury after being issued with your Certificate of Insurance, and before the 72-hour timeframe has lapsed, you may be covered for various expenses under your policy. Check your Policy Document for the complete list of what’s covered and what isn’t covered.

3. Extend your policy for your overseas holiday

If your current travel insurance policy is due to expire soon, but you’re having too much fun and want to stay overseas for longer, rather than risk being without insurance, you can extend your existing policy.

You may extend your policy up to a maximum of 12 months from the policy commencement date which is indicated on your Certificate of Insurance. This must be done prior to 11:59pm NZST on the closing date of your current policy.

If you have any questions about purchasing travel insurance during your overseas holiday, please get in touch.

4. Need to know more?

This information may help if things go wrong, and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what’s happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your Policy Document will always have the full details of what you’re covered for.

If you have any further questions about what’s covered and not covered, just ask us.

Travel Insurance for a trip to Croatia

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Croatia.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Croatia offers travelers the perfect conditions to enjoy the rich beauty of its forests and coastlines or to soak in the excitement of its vibrant cities such as Zagreb and Split. Smaller cities such as Rijeka and Zadar are perfect for travelers seeking a more laid-back and off the beaten track Croatian adventure.

However, before you step foot on this romantic land of pebbled beaches, historic villages, and awe-inspiring waterfalls, you may want to consider buying travel insurance, as even the most careful travelers can run into danger or unforeseen events when they’re not expecting it.

What’s covered

The following is just a brief list of what World Nomads may cover under our Standard and Explorer plans. Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you choose, World Nomads plans may offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical – if you get sick or injured you may be covered for hospitalization (in-patient or out-patient) and for treatment at a medical center. You must contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible as they can inform you of the nearest medical facilities. They will oversee your course of treatment by checking in with your treating doctor.
  • Extended stays – if you’re having too much fun in Croatia and want to stay a few extra days or weeks, then you may extend your travel insurance policy for a maximum of one year past the start date listed on your Certificate of Insurance. This must be done prior to the current expiration date of your policy.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation – if you’re injured and need to be repatriated back to your Country of Residence, then this must be approved by our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and your treating doctor first. The costs involved in your repatriation may be covered depending on which plan you have selected.
  • Lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings – lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and valuables on holidays can be a very stressful experience. If this happens to you, then you’ll need to submit your receipts, police reports and witness details (if your belongings were stolen). Claims without any substantiating documents may not be approved.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events – for all the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions relating to this type of cover, please read our Coronavirus cover article.

To view the entire list of what we cover, along with the terms, benefit limits and exclusions, please check your policy wording.

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Croatia?

World Nomads offers two plans, the Standard and Explorer plan, which both cover many of the same risks including lost baggage, emergency medical treatment and repatriation back to your Country of Residence. However, our Explorer Plan gives a broader range of cover, with more benefits and higher limits. Ultimately you should consider selecting the plan that gives you the most adequate level of cover for the activities that you wish to pursue on your Croatian holiday.

Here are just a few of the reasons why travel insurance could come in handy when planning a trip to Croatia:

Natural Catastrophes – like many countries around the world, Croatia has a history of being struck by earthquakes that can render hotels and hostels uninhabitable.

Crime – as is the case in most countries of the world, opportunistic thieves scrutinize crowds of tourists, planning when they can snatch an unattached handbag or shopping bag from a traveler whose attention is otherwise engaged.

Adventure activities - whatever activities you might be into, Croatia offers travelers plenty of verdant forests, jagged mountain ranges and pristine beaches to tantalize even the most hardcore adventure seekers.

You should check your policy wording to ensure you pick the best plan for your favorite sports and activities. For example, before you begin your hiking expedition through Risnjak National Park, you would need to know the altitude limit for hiking listed within your chosen policy.

Our plans have different levels of cover for hiking at altitudes of 3,000 meters (Level 1), 4,500 meters (Level 2) and 6,000 meters (Level 3). Certain exclusions apply to every policy. One such exclusion is search and rescue missions.

If you feel unsure about whether your volunteer activity is covered, you can get in touch with our Customer Service team and they will be able to assist you.

Here are just a few of the 150+ adventure activities that we cover:

  • Sandboarding
  • Backpacking
  • Snorkeling
  • Hiking & trekking
  • Surfing
  • Scuba diving
  • Mountain climbing

Travel insurance tipIf your booked accommodation is damaged by any type of natural catastrophe such as a hurricane, flood, or earthquake, then your policy may cover you for the costs of relocating to and staying in a different hotel or hostel. This cover is only available on the Explorer Plan.

Travel insurance tip – if any of your belongings are stolen, go to your nearest police station and report the incident. Request a police report, as you’ll need this if you wish to claim. When making a claim, include all supporting documentation such as witness statement details, receipts of purchase, police reports and surveillance footage (if the incident was caught on film).

What to look out for when traveling around Croatia

If you have a passion for adventure activities such as hiking, mountain climbing and diving, then you won’t have difficulty passing the time when you visit Croatia. However, travelers need to be aware of the hidden dangers that lie beneath the rugged natural beauty.

When trekking the mountains and forest regions, always keep to the established hiking trails and try to avoid wandering off into the undergrowth. Landmines remaining from the Croatian War of Independence several decades ago may still pose a threat to anyone passing through the wilderness.

Croatia’s coastlines provide ample opportunities for cliff jumping enthusiasts. We do offer cover for cave/cavern diving, scuba diving and free diving (up to 50 meters), but please be aware that special conditions and exclusions apply to these activities. Always check your policy wording to ensure that any of your selected activities and sports are adequately covered. Please note that we won’t cover you for cliff diving under any of our policies.

What’s not covered?

Below is a limited list of what our travel plans do not cover. To view the entire list of benefits, limits, and exclusions, please refer to your policy wording.

  • Pre-existing conditions as explained in your policy.
  • Any course of treatment that you had already been having back home prior to your holiday.
  • Unattended luggage and personal belongings that are stolen, lost, or destroyed.
  • Incurred expenses which organizations such as hotels or airlines are liable for.
  • If you are breaking the law.
  • If you do not cooperate with the efforts of local authorities and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team to repatriate you back to your Country of Residence.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Travel Insurance for a trip to Germany

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Germany

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Planning a German adventure is all about indulging in the food and top notch German beers, as well as hiking in the Bavarian Alps, and taking in the arts, culture, and history at one of Germany’s 6,200 museums covering every topic imaginable, including mustard. Before you take off, you may want to consider travel insurance to ensure that any hiccups to your plans don’t pack a knockout punch.

What’s covered?

Once your trip is locked in, next on the travel list to consider should be an insurance policy. If it’s an afterthought, that’s alright too, you can still get a policy if you’ve already set off.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each provides different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. Here are some of the highlights our cover provides for:

  • Extended stays.
  • Emergency overseas medical.
  • Cancellation and interruption coverage.
  • Baggage and personal belongings coverage.
  • Cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events.
  • Rental vehicle insurance.
  • Single, duo, or family plans.

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Germany?

As exciting as a trip to this part of Europe is for most, as with all travel not everything always goes without a hitch. If landing in Deutschland after a lengthy flight from the US or further afield only to realize your luggage hasn’t arrived with you; twisting your ankle while traversing the cobbled streets in Bremen; or the thought of your travel buddy contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) pre-trip give you the jitters, travel insurance could lessen the financial burden.

Our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 and can assist with letting you know if attending a hospital is medically necessary, help you locate the nearest medical facilities (this can be beneficial in out of the way places), liaise with your treating doctor to make sure that your treatment plan is appropriate, and assist with language barriers you may face.

What to look out for when traveling around Germany?

Although mostly a safe destination, the unexpected can trip us up here just as it can anywhere. In this part of the world, pickpocketing and bag snatching are common concerns, especially when in crowded areas, so it’s best to be wary of your surroundings and belongings.

Scams are also prevalent, particularly at railway stations and riots and demonstrations can be disruptive. If you’re injured, have your possessions stolen, or your plans are cancelled due to unexpected extreme weather events, your World Nomads policy may be able to help.

Each of the two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – offer different benefits, limits, and sub-limits, so it’s best to compare them to see which suits you best. Here is a brief sample of what we cover depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected. Please check your policy wording for our complete list:

  • For loss or theft of personal belongings or for digital nomads traveling with tech gear, both levels of cover offer compensation, depending on the circumstances.
  • If you’re all set to road trip along a section of the 8,197-mile Autobahn, our Explorer Plan covers rental car excess in the event you have an accident (terms and conditions apply).
  • Adventure-seekers are advised to list the activities they are planning to undertake in the policy detail. Higher risk activities may require an additional premium.
  • In the case of COVID-19, if you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with the virus and you have to cancel your trip, we will pay the non-refundable portion of your pre-paid travel arrangements. The COVID-19 diagnosis must be made after policy purchase. For all the details including benefit limits and exclusions under our Coronavirus cover, check out our Coronavirus cover article.

What’s not covered?

Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a US Department of State or your local government’s ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ warning.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.

This is not a full list of what’s covered and what’s not; please check your policy wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Traveler Tip: always make sure you’ve done your research on the countries you’re planning to visit as there may be government-imposed travel bans or restrictions in place. If you decide to travel to a country on a ‘Do Not Travel’ list, then your policy will be cancelled. You can find out more information on the US Department of State site on international travel by clicking here. Additionally, the World Health Organization has information on COVID-19 and travel advice which you can read by clicking here.

What Does Domestic Travel Insurance Cover?

Four travel benefits you shouldn't leave home without

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Maybe your next trip won’t include crossing an ocean or boarding a plane. But just because you’re travelling within Brazil doesn’t mean that you won’t need backup if your travels take a turn for the worst.

World Nomads’ coverage starts when you leave your home province and provides essential protection against a wide range of mishaps that you could encounter on the road.

Why do I need travel insurance if I'm travelling domestically?

It doesn’t matter if you’re on a distant continent or in an adjacent state – you could sprain your ankle, get into a car accident, or get delayed by inclement weather just about anywhere. A good travel protection plan can help prevent any of these unexpected events from turning into full-blown disasters.

Benefits

Accidents and emergencies can happen in your own backyard – which is why it’s important to consider these four main benefits of domestic travel insurance.

  • Unexpected trip cancellation: An illness of an immediate family member or a work emergency can cause you to cancel your trip, and World Nomads travel insurance can help you recover your pre-paid non-refundable trip costs for these and other covered reasons.
  • Medical emergencies: Hospital bills and emergency office visits can really add up, especially when your health insurance won’t cover you out of state. These costs alone are a reason to purchase travel insurance for your domestic travels.
  • Trip interruption: Sometimes you can hit a bump in the road – in a literal and figurative sense. Maybe the Brazilian government issued a ‘defer travel’ warning or maybe your travel companion got sick. This benefit covers meals, hotel stays and any other surprise expenses you could incur as a result of the setback.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: Sometimes the best place to get medical treatment is at a hospital back home. Be sure to call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team to get approval.

Exclusions

It is important that you read and understand your coverage. There are limits and exclusions that apply to all insured travellers.

  • Alcohol- and drug- related incidents: There is no coverage for any alcohol-related sickness, death or injury or the abuse of medication, drugs or any other toxic substance.
  • Any losses related to the participation in illegal activities: For example, if you get injured while looting a store during a riot.
  • Select personal belongings, such as bicycles, professional equipment, and musical instruments.
  • Travel supplier cancellations: If your airline or tour operator decides to cancel, you should seek refunds and credits or reschedule your trip directly with your supplier.
This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.

Why World Nomads travel insurance?

Along with the benefits above, World Nomads travel insurance also includes important assistance services and features such as:

Seguro Viagem Nacional

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

  • Pertences pessoais: Por exemplo, bicicletas, equipamentos profissionais e instrumentos musicais.

What to do if you’re hurt in an accident

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

1. Safety comes first

If you are seriously hurt during your overseas holiday, then make sure you attend a local medical centre or hospital immediately to receive medical attention.

2. Seek medical attention

If you’re experiencing an emergency our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can advise you of the nearest medical facility if you are unsure where to go, or if you need help navigating a foreign language.

Once you’re able to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location.

Once you’ve been admitted to hospital or reviewed by a doctor in a medical centre, you’ll need to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team to update them on your situation. If you are hospitalised or if your treatment expenses as an outpatient are likely to go above AUD$2,000, then our Emergency Assistance Team will liaise with the hospital on your behalf to arrange payments.

For injuries where treatment costs are not expected to exceed AUD$2000, you pay all your medical fees, and then submit all your receipts to our claims department for reimbursement.

3. Get it in writing

If you’re injured and wish to claim for your medical expenses, always remember to collect as much supporting documents as possible. Some examples of documentation that you may need to provide include:

  • Treating doctor’s report stating how the injury occurred and the diagnosis.
  • Hospital admission report.
  • Report from the emergency medical transport service (if taken to hospital by ambulance or helicopter).
  • Medical imaging reports from any scans or tests that were conducted.
  • If the police attended the scene of your accident, ask them for a police report.
  • Medical centre or hospital invoices showing a list of the individual costs associated with your care and treatment.

4. Hold on to your receipts

Make sure you retain all your receipts if you intend on claiming for medical expenses. This includes receipts for any pharmaceutical products that you purchased in relation to your injury. If you cannot provide receipts to substantiate your treatment expenses, then your claim may be dismissed, or any payments that you do receive might not be for the full amounts.

It’s always a good idea to keep all documentation relating to your holiday in general, not just for your accident. As well as medical receipts, make sure you keep your itinerary, correspondence from airlines or hotels regarding cancellations, as well as all hospital, police and doctor’s reports.

5. Need to know more?

Always read your PDS carefully so that you will be clear about the limits, exclusions and benefits of your plan. Our Standard and Explorer plans both have different levels of cover. It’s your responsibility to know the details of your policy, including what is and what isn’t covered, in case you need to make a claim. Your PDS will always have the full details.

If you have questions about what's covered and not covered, just ask us.
