What’s covered?

World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan, which can support Nomads on their South America journey - benefit limits vary between the plans so it’s worth considering which activities you plan to do and which plan will suit you best.

Lost, stolen or delayed baggage cover

Overseas travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises, from the sheer deliciousness of a street vendor’s pao de queijo (cheese bread), to the less-than-welcome surprise of the theft of your wallet and passport while you sleep, or having your luggage lost by your airline carrier. World Nomads travel insurance offers baggage cover that can help keep your holiday on track.

Coverage includes:

  • Baggage and personal effects, including sporting equipment, lost or damaged by your transportation carrier
  • Stolen bags or personal belongings that are reported to the authorities
  • Theft or damage of travel documents such as passports and visas
  • Baggage delayed for more than 12 hours

Be sure to keep your receipts as you will need them in order to submit a claim for reimbursement under the policy.

Overseas emergency medical insurance

World Nomads travel insurance plans include cover for emergency medical expenses. Our plans offer cover for emergency medical coverage for injury or sickness, ambulance transportation and emergency medical evacuation.

You must be covered under your Canadian Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP) for the entire duration of your trip to be eligible for the maximum emergency medical expenses benefit under the policy.

If you are a solo traveller and you’re admitted to hospital for three days or more, your policy provides cover up to the maximum limit for a bedside companion’s travel (round trip airfare) and subsistence (accommodation, meals, essential calls and taxis for up to 10 days).

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance team around the clock

Canadians have access to our assistance team 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can help you access medical treatment and assistance and get help if you need it. Note that you must notify our medical assistance team before you have any emergency medical treatment and before any surgery.

The LiveTravel™ service team can also help you with emergency travel problems such as after-hours travel services, rebooking flights, hotel reservations, ground transportation and luggage tracking.

Cover for activities and sports when in South America

South America offers adventures galore. However, if you’re planning to go whitewater rafting on the Mendoza River or glacier walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier, travel insurance could help you if you have an accident by covering some medical expenses.

World Nomads offers cover for more than 150 sports, activities, volunteer and work experiences under both the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. When you purchase your policy, be sure to list any activities you think you will be doing to make sure you're covered. Some adventure, sports, work or volunteer activities may require you to pay an extra premium. If something goes wrong while participating in an activity, sport or adventure, the cover that may be available includes:

  • Emergency Medical Expense
  • Evacuation and Repatriation
  • Travel Accident
  • Trip Interruption

If you’re not sure if a sport or activity is covered, please contact us to find out.

World Nomads Explorer and Standard policies will cover expenses up to a capped limit, including the cost for a medical escort if you’re severely injured and need to be transported home. Check your policy for details.

What’s not covered?

Understanding what’s not covered is just as important as knowing what your insurance does cover you for.

For example, some things that won’t be covered by the Standard or the Explorer policy include:

  • Lost baggage without a theft report
  • Gear that was stolen from an unattended car (even if it was locked)
  • Medical evacuation or repatriation for any incidents related to drug or alcohol abuse, or that is not pre-authorized by a physician

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

Safety tip Try to stick to well-lit areas at all times and avoid travelling alone. This may help safeguard you against armed robbery which unfortunately can be a risk. But if the unthinkable happens, and you are a victim of theft, don’t try to fight off armed attackers. Your life and your safety is paramount; your things can be replaced, you can’t. Contact the local authorities immediately for assistance. In the event of a theft, burglary or robbery, make sure you obtain a copy of the police report as you will need this for any claims you make under your policy.

Travel insurance for Thailand

Turquoise waters, vibrant culture, lush jungles and Tuk Tuks

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

The Land of Smiles attracts scores of sun-seeking British tourists every year. Drawn to the tropical conditions, white sandy beaches, fabulous food, the Full Moon parties, and chaotic appeal of the cities like Bangkok, it’s not hard to see why Thailand rates so highly with British travellers.

What's covered

World Nomads has two plans - Standard and Explorer - each of them providing cover for a multitude of activities including hiking, kitesurfing, kayaking, surfing and diving.

We also offer cover for key events such as:

  • Medical evacuation and repatriation back to the UK
  • Cancellation/trip interruption
  • Emergency overseas medical
  • Delays or missed flights
  • Lost, stolen or damaged baggage
  • Coronavirus-related events

Traveller tip 1: UK travellers aged 18 or over can enter via Thailand Pass, and must have a Covid vaccination certificate, have been fully vaccinated for at least 14 days before travel. The requirement to take a PCR test before you leave the UK has now been dropped, and instead you are encouraged to take antigen self-tests during your stay. For more information on travelling to Thailand from the UK go to the UK government's FCDO website.

How can travel insurance help when visiting Thailand

We know the Brits love their cocktails by the beach, island-hopping explorations, and wildlife encounters, but as much fun as a trip to Thailand always is, it is just as important to consider what could go wrong and be prepared for that as best as any traveller can. The following is a list of travel insurance considerations:

  • Activities and sports cover: Whether its snorkelling, kayaking, hiking, and cycling our policies may cover you for more than 150 activities you may wish to try while in Thailand. We know Brits are an adventurous bunch, and so long as you are with a professional, and adhere to the conditions, instructions, etc, you may be covered.
  • Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team: We know that when travelling in a foreign country, things can get lost in translation. That’s why we have a 24-hour assistance team available to you for the entirety of your trip. Whether you have a query about your cover, the procedures you need to follow if something goes wrong, or you just want to find out about medical providers where you are, the team can assist you.
  • Cover for baggage / personal belongings: World Nomads plans offer cover to UK residents for luggage and personal gear. If your baggage is delayed between Heathrow and Bangkok, we may be able to help you with necessities. Same goes for any gear that may be damaged, stolen or destroyed during your travels, so long as it wasn’t a result of recklessness or negligence. Under the Explorer plan, the policy covers accidental loss or theft of your own money while on your person or stolen from a locked safety deposit box. Unfortunately, we don't cover your activity and sports gear while it's in use.
  • Medical emergencies: No one plans to injure themselves or spend more time in bed than out exploring the sights; that’s the last thing we want. World Nomads can assist with emergency medical transport, evacuation, and repatriation if you’re medically unfit to continue your travels. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Covid 19 and travel insurance: Both our Standard and Explorer plans offer cover for emergency medical assistance should you fall ill with Coronavirus while abroad. It is worth noting though that the Explorer plan factors in cancellation and curtailment before and during your trip as a result of a coronavirus diagnosis. Not only that, if mid-trip you find your pre-booked accommodation is no longer available due to deep cleaning, or you’re unable to board a plane because your suspected of having Covid, we may be able to help recoup some of the costs. On-trip personal quarantine costs as a result of your diagnosis are also considered under our Explorer plan.

Traveller tip 2: It is important that British tourists visiting Thailand understand that a World Nomads policy is not a private medical insurance (PMI) policy and will not cover all your medical expenses, particularly not for those considered unnecessary by our medical specialists.

What to look out for when travelling around Thailand

Most travellers let their hair down when they head abroad, sometimes so much so that they often forget that they’re in a foreign country and need to always keep their heads in the game.

  • Theft: British travellers need to be aware that pickpockets and bag snatchers are active all over Thailand, so be mindful of your personal belongings when travelling in open transport like Tuk Tuks and don’t think a short nap on a bus is without its risks, especially if you haven’t secured your belongings.
  • Drink spiking: Be diligent about not accepting drinks from strangers in bars and don’t leave glasses and cups unattended. Drink spiking has been reported in Thailand, particularly during Full Moon parties. Not only can an incident like this ruin your holiday but it has in the past led to severe illness.
  • Fraud: Think twice before handing your passport to a third party; it’s risky and losing sight of your passport is a big no-no anywhere. Keep a keen eye on your debit and credit cards during transactions, always use an ATM within a bank and keep your PIN to yourself. Skimming is an issue across Thailand, so if something looks untoward, wait and find another option.

What's not covered

  • Costs associated with ignoring UK Government travel warnings or advice. This includes travelling to an area where there is a ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ alert; and/or choosing to remain in a country after such a warning has been issued.
  • Medical expenses incurred in the UK.
  • Any costs associated with a pre-existing medical condition, unless otherwise stated in your policy.
  • Travelling against medical advice.
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.
  • Injury or damage caused by drug abuse or alcohol misuse.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the Policy Wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.

If you have a specific question about World Nomads insurance, please visit our online Help Center or contact us.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Travel Insurance for South America

Learn more about World Nomads travel insurance for your trip across South America.

    Trusted by:

  • Trusted by:

South America is home to some of humanity’s oldest treasures as the home of the ancient Incans and Aztecs. But it offers much more than ancient wonders, with a rich tapestry of destinations and promise of adventure from the legendary Galapagos islands and beaches of Valparaiso.

Travel insurance can be the safety net that helps when things don’t go to plan while traversing this spectacular continent, with a 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team available and travel insurance benefits.

Travel Insurance can offer cover for:

Santiago, Chile

What’s covered?

When traveling through South America World Nomads offers two travel insurance plans, the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan.

Both plans offer cover for things such as lost baggage and emergency medical evacuation, however, the Explorer Plan offers higher benefit limits and cover for a wider range of activities. If you know you’re planning to tackle some adventure sports, check our list of activities to decide which travel insurance policy best suits your needs.

If your checked-in bags are delayed by 12 hours or more, you may be able to buy some essentials to last until your bags are returned and claim those costs against your insurance policy. These essentials will include a t-shirt, underwear, socks, toiletries, and/or pajamas. They do not include designer clothes or glamorous evening wear. Make sure to review your benefit limits for baggage delay.

South America offers adventures galore, but if you’re planning to go white-water rafting on the Mendoza River or glacier walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier and an accident happens, travel insurance could help with reimbursement of medical expenses or the cost of evacuation should a physician advise it’s necessary.

What should I look out for when traveling to South America?

Getting away from the gringo trail (the tourist hotspots) and discovering a more authentic South America will make for holiday memories that stay with you long after you return State-side.

Whether you visit Chile’s Marble Caves, explore Lamas Castle in Peru, or take in the stunning Hill of Seven Colors in Purmamarca, (locally called the Hill of Seven Skirts), South America has an array of experiences for the adventurous traveler.

However, whenever you leave the US to travel overseas there are risks and travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything so understanding what your policy covers you for is important. Make sure your valuables are safe and kept on you at all times, particularly while traveling on public transport. Pickpockets and thieves operate in many areas throughout South America so taking all reasonable precautions to keep your belongings safe will help with any claim if theft happens to you.

Also, unfortunately, armed robbery can be a risk. Stick to well-lit areas at all times and avoid traveling alone. But if the unthinkable happens, your life and your safety is paramount so don’t try to save your wallet if it means risking your life. Your things can be replaced, but you can’t.

  • Cover for activities and sports when in South America
Hiking to Choquequirao through the cloud forest above the Apurimac River is a glorious way to explore Incan civilisations, but you’ll need to know the height of your hiking trail to make sure you’re covered by the right policy – up to 19,685 feet is covered by the Standard Plan but up to 22,965 feet requires the Explorer Plan.
It’s advisable that you plan the sports and activities that you’re doing and then check the list of covered activities to see if you need the Standard Plan or the Explorer Plan.
If you’re injured and require medical evacuation, or even repatriation back to the US, a physician must certify that emergency evacuation is necessary before cover will kick in.
  • Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team around the clock
US residents have access to Generali Global Assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year from anywhere in the world.
When you call (call collect from anywhere in the world), make sure you have your policy number and a contact number for where you are so we can help.
  • Overseas medical insurance and cover for Coronavirus-related events
There’s no denying that the way we travel has changed following the impact of coronavirus. It may be helpful to know that World Nomads emergency medical travel insurance offers cover for things such as unexpected sickness that prevents you from beginning or continuing your trip, helping with pre-paid non-refundable trip costs. You can read more about coverage for Coronavirus related events.
  • Lost, stolen or delayed baggage cover
Overseas travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises and traveling to South America is no different – the sheer deliciousness of a street vendor’s pao de queijo (cheese bread), the kindness of a helpful stranger, the beauty of a beach sunrise. These are the moments you will remember. But it’s important to be prepared for everything – the theft of your wallet and passport while you sleep, your rental car being damaged or stolen while you hike an Incan trail, or the garden variety luggage being lost by your airline carrier. World Nomads travel insurance offers cover for many of life’s unexpected and unwelcome surprises.
A few tips that will help you include making sure you make a police report as soon as you discover the theft. Without a report the insurance claim can’t be considered. Also, make sure you keep receipts for everything to help with your claim.

What’s not covered?

Understanding what’s not covered is just as important as knowing what your insurance does cover you for. Things that won’t be covered by travel insurance include:

  • Lost baggage without a loss or theft report
  • Prescribed medications
  • Gear that was stolen from an unattended car (even if it was locked)
  • Medical evacuation or repatriation for any incidents related to drug and alcohol abuse, or that is not pre-authorized by a physician
  • Medical costs related to a pre-existing condition
  • Not having visas or passports issued on time or properly fulfilling the entry requirements of your destination.
  • Fear of travel – you’re not feeling secure about a situation developing in the destination where you’re booked.
  • Travel restrictions at your trip destination or warnings issued by the US Department of State.

If you’ve any questions, or are unsure if something is covered, please contact us for more information.

Here are some of the highlights of our coverage, depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected:

  • Emergency overseas medical: if you become sick or injured during your trip your policy may cover you for overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us.
  • Travel delays/interruption: if your trip is interrupted due to an insured event. Depending on your country of residence and which plan you’ve selected you may be covered for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.
  • Baggage and valuables: if your belongings are stolen, accidentally damaged, delayed or lost. Terms and conditions apply. You’ll need official reports, supporting documentation and copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Adventure activities and sports: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences across land, water and sky. Check before you buy that your adventure is covered and find out what policy upgrade options may be available.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events: to find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

Please note that all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

Should I consider travel insurance for a trip to France?

France is Europe’s 3rd largest country, which means there is a lot to see and do. In most cases, traveling goes without a hitch, but considering the right travel insurance for you can take the added stress out of travel if things don’t go to plan.

Families

Traveling as a family can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and France is the perfect destination with plenty of family-friendly locations and activities on offer. Our policies can help cover for medical emergency, pregnancy and Covid, trip interruption and also provide 24/7 worldwide emergency assistance. Cover includes two adults and up to eight dependents on one policy.

Multi-Destination Trips

If you’re making your way around Europe and visiting France on your travels, travel insurance can cover medical emergencies and evacuation, stolen items, and more than 150 adventures, sports and activities including volunteering and working.

If you’re traveling to multiple European countries, World Nomads can help with:

  • Translation and interpreting services in case of an emergency
  • Physician referrals
  • Pre-trip information

Summer Adventures

You can enjoy your summer travels around France knowing our policies may cover you for a range of activities including hiking trips around the mountains of Chamonix, road trips in Provence, kayaking & rafting and even sailing the Cote D’Azur.

We offer two plans depending on your country of residence – Standard and Explorer. Each policy provides different levels of coverage depending on what you need:

  • The Standard Plan covers a range of benefits and has lower coverage limits.
  • The Explorer plan covers all the benefits of the Standard plan, with larger coverage limits, more benefits.

Simply specify all the activities you have planned for your trip when you get your quote, as you can’t add them afterwards. Terms and conditions apply, check your Policy Wording for details or contact us.

Winter Travel

From taking the family ice-skating on the rink at Champs-Elysees, to hunting for black truffles in the snow-dusted forests of Perigord, or sipping hot chocolate in between snowboard sessions in the French Alps, our travel insurance can cover you for more than 150 adventures, snow and winter sports activities, medical emergencies and even extended stays if you are enjoying your winter escape to France too much.

What to look out for when traveling around France

  • Keep an eye on your gear 24/7: It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. You should also make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.
  • Baggage theft or loss: if you’re on a road trip and your rental car gets broken into, or your airline loses your bags, you may be able to claim to replace the item or claim for essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your bag to be returned.
  • Rental car coverage and road safety – France is the perfect place for a road trip, with so many different regions to explore. Available on our Explorer plan, we may cover your rental vehicle insurance excess, or the cost of repairing the rental vehicle if you’re involved in a motor accident or your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
  • Pickpockets: Whilst France is amongst the safest countries to travel to there is always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed in a tourist hotspot. If your items are stolen travel insurance could help replace them.

What’s not covered

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything and there are some important general exclusions you should be aware of, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see travel.state.gov)
  • Unattended baggage or personal items, including any items left in a locked car overnight.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Participation in a sport or activity where you fail to adhere to the terms of coverage for listed sports or activities.
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

Note: be sure to read the Policy Wording, terms, conditions and General Exclusions for other scenarios and expenses we don’t cover so there’ll be no surprises if you need to use your cover.

Tips for traveling in France

  • Always check the Visa requirements – depending on your Country of Residence you may require a Visa to visit France or any of the other Schengen countries.
  • Pack light – especialy if you’ll be traveling around France using public transport.
  • Book attraction tickets in advance – if you know your plans then consider booking ahead for popular tourist sites such as the Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles and the Louvre as tickets can sell out and some attractions require pre-booking.

This is not a full list of what's covered and what's not; please check your Policy Wording for a full list of terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions that may apply to your specific plan. If you are unsure of your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.
