Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Germany?

As exciting as a trip to this part of Europe is for most, as with all travel not everything always goes without a hitch. If landing in Deutschland after a lengthy flight from the US or further afield only to realize your luggage hasn’t arrived with you; twisting your ankle while traversing the cobbled streets in Bremen; or the thought of your travel buddy contracting Coronavirus (COVID-19) pre-trip give you the jitters, travel insurance could lessen the financial burden.

What to look out for when traveling around Germany?

Although mostly a safe destination, the unexpected can trip us up here just as it can anywhere. In this part of the world, pickpocketing and bag snatching are common concerns, especially when in crowded areas, so it’s best to be wary of your surroundings and belongings.

Scams are also prevalent, particularly at railway stations and riots and demonstrations can be disruptive. If you’re injured, have your possessions stolen, or your plans are cancelled due to unexpected extreme weather events, your World Nomads policy may be able to help.

Each of the two levels of cover – Standard and Explorer – offer different benefits, limits, and sub-limits, so it’s best to compare them to see which suits you best. Here is a brief sample of what we cover depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected. Please check your policy wording for our complete list:

  • For loss or theft of personal belongings or for digital nomads traveling with tech gear, both levels of cover offer compensation, depending on the circumstances.
  • If you’re all set to road trip along a section of the 8,197-mile Autobahn, our Explorer Plan covers rental car excess in the event you have an accident (terms and conditions apply).
  • Adventure-seekers are advised to list the activities they are planning to undertake in the policy detail. Higher risk activities may require an additional premium.
  • In the case of COVID-19, if you or a member of your traveling party are diagnosed with the virus and you have to cancel your trip, we will pay the non-refundable portion of your pre-paid travel arrangements. What’s not covered?

Some things we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a US Department of State or your local government’s ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ warning.
  • Illness associated with a failure to comply with preventative measures for the travel region, as outlined by the World Health Organization.
  • Loss or damage to luggage due to age, wear and tear, loss of value. Damage to sporting equipment caused while in use.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.

  • Any losses related to the participation in illegal activities: For example, if you get injured while looting a store during a riot. 
  • Select personal belongings, such as bicycles, professional equipment, and musical instruments. 
  • Travel supplier cancellations: If your airline or tour operator decides to cancel, you should seek refunds and credits or reschedule your trip directly with your supplier.

What to do if you’re hurt in an accident

1. Safety comes first

If you are seriously hurt during your overseas holiday, then make sure you attend a local medical centre or hospital immediately to receive medical attention.

2. Seek medical attention

If you’re experiencing an emergency our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can advise you of the nearest medical facility if you are unsure where to go, or if you need help navigating a foreign language.

Once you’re able to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location.

Once you’ve been admitted to hospital or reviewed by a doctor in a medical centre, you’ll need to contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team to update them on your situation. If you are hospitalised or if your treatment expenses as an outpatient are likely to go above AUD$2,000, then our Emergency Assistance Team will liaise with the hospital on your behalf to arrange payments.

For injuries where treatment costs are not expected to exceed AUD$2000, you pay all your medical fees, and then submit all your receipts to our claims department for reimbursement.

3. Get it in writing

If you’re injured and wish to claim for your medical expenses, always remember to collect as much supporting documents as possible. Some examples of documentation that you may need to provide include:

  • Treating doctor’s report stating how the injury occurred and the diagnosis.
  • Hospital admission report.
  • Report from the emergency medical transport service (if taken to hospital by ambulance or helicopter).
  • Medical imaging reports from any scans or tests that were conducted.
  • If the police attended the scene of your accident, ask them for a police report.
  • Medical centre or hospital invoices showing a list of the individual costs associated with your care and treatment.

4. Hold on to your receipts

Make sure you retain all your receipts if you intend on claiming for medical expenses. This includes receipts for any pharmaceutical products that you purchased in relation to your injury. If you cannot provide receipts to substantiate your treatment expenses, then your claim may be dismissed, or any payments that you do receive might not be for the full amounts.

It’s always a good idea to keep all documentation relating to your holiday in general, not just for your accident. As well as medical receipts, make sure you keep your itinerary, correspondence from airlines or hotels regarding cancellations, as well as all hospital, police and doctor’s reports.

5. Need to know more?

Always read your PDS carefully so that you will be clear about the limits, exclusions and benefits of your plan. Our Standard and Explorer plans both have different levels of cover. It’s your responsibility to know the details of your policy, including what is and what isn’t covered, in case you need to make a claim. Your PDS will always have the full details.

What to do if you suddenly fall ill

1. Seek medical attention

If you suddenly feel unwell at any time during your overseas trip, go to the nearest medical centre or hospital. An emergency transport service provider can carry you to the nearest hospital if you’re in too much pain to walk or take public transport.

In case you don’t know the whereabouts of your nearest hospital or doctor’s surgery, you can call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team who will direct you where to go. You’ll need to tell them your policy number, what seems to be wrong with you and your current location.

After being examined by a hospital or medical centre doctor, call our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team again to update them on your situation. If you’re admitted to hospital, our Emergency Assistance Team will correspond with the Admissions Department regarding payments and care arrangements.

2. Get any reports in writing

You will need to provide copies of all reports in relation to your illness. Cover is only provided for illnesses that happen during your trip and not for any existing medical conditions. We may request a report on your medical history from your General Practitioner in Australia if we require further information. Types of reports you’ll need to obtain include:

  • Emergency medical transport report (if taken to hospital by ambulance or helicopter).
  • Treating doctor’s report stating the date you fell ill, the diagnosis and prognosis, as well as the causation of your illness.
  • Hospital admission report stating the dates you were admitted and discharged from hospital.
  • Other medical reports such as lab reports, specialist’s reports and public health emails confirming a Coronavirus (COVID-19) diagnosis.
  • Any correspondence from airline, hotel or railway firms confirming cancellations of any accommodation or journeys that you had paid for.

3. Retain all your receipts

If you wish to claim for any expenses you incurred because of falling ill on your overseas holiday, then you’ll need to be able to provide your receipts. While it’s always necessary to keep receipts for your medical expenses, make sure that you keep any other receipts from your holiday as well. Receipts for hotel stays, flights and even dining receipts (if you experienced food poisoning) may be required to substantiate your claim. Examples of receipts that you should keep include:

  • All hospital and doctor’s receipts
  • Receipts for pharmaceutical products that you may have purchased
  • Pathology receipts
  • Hotel, airline, railway, bus company and/or restaurant receipts

4. Cover for some Coronavirus-related events during your holiday

If you or one of your travelling partners contracts COVID-19 at any time during your holiday, and you need to cancel your travel plans, then you may be able to claim for any non-refundable expenses that you had incurred. Your Explorer Plan cover must already be in effect (having already passed your 72-hour waiting period), at the time that you or one of your companions caught COVID-19.

To support your claim, you’ll need to obtain a treating doctor’s report or medical certificate stating the Coronavirus diagnosis. Other documents that you’ll need to provide include pathology reports or official health statements indicating a positive COVID-19 result for you or anyone in your travelling party. Any claims for non-refundable expenses will need to be supported by copies of your receipts.

5. Need to know more?

This information may help if things go wrong and you want to make a claim. All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what’s happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy. Your PDS will always have the full details of what you’re covered for.

What to do if you have to cancel your trip due to illness or injury

1. Rearrange or cancel your bookings straight away

If you’re injured or get ill during your overseas holiday, ask your treating doctor to give you a report or medical certificate stating your diagnosis and period that you will be unfit for travel. Then contact the airlines and hotels with whom you have bookings as soon as reasonably possible. Try to make alternative arrangements for when you’ll be fit to resume your holiday.

If your doctor believes there is no option but to cancel your holiday and return home, then you may be covered for any of your previously paid, non-refundable expenses. However, if you are only unfit for a brief period, then your expenses may only be covered for the time stated on your medical certificate, not for the remainder of your holiday.

Don’t leave it to the last minute to cancel or rearrange your hotel or airline bookings as this may lead to additional costs. If you delay notifying these organisations, then your claim for expenses may not be approved.

Any cover offered for accommodation and flights will only be made up to the maximum benefit limits stated in your PDS. That’s why it’s important to read through your policy so that you know the applicable terms, limits, exclusions, and benefits.

2. Provide all written documents

To submit a claim for expenses, you’ll need to submit all the medical reports related to your illness or injury, as well as general correspondence regarding your cancellations. Examples of reports you’ll need to provide include:

  • The treating doctor’s report or medical certificate must state the diagnosis, date of injury or when you first noticed the symptoms of your illness, and period that you’ll be unfit to travel.
  • The specialist’s report and other medical reports including any medical imaging and pathology reports.
  • A hospital admission report confirming the dates that you were admitted and discharged.
  • Emergency medical transport reports if you were taken to hospital by an ambulance or helicopter.
  • Police report (if the police were called to the scene of your accident).
  • Emails or letters from hotels or airlines regarding your cancellations.
  • Your itinerary.

3. Don’t forget your receipts

If you cannot provide receipts for your accommodation, flights, and treatment expenses, then your claim may be dismissed, or any payment that you do receive might only be for a minimal amount. Types of receipts that you’ll need to provide include the following:

  • Receipts for doctor’s consultations, hospital stays, medical imaging tests, and consultations with any allied health providers.
  • Pharmaceutical products.
  • Accommodation, flights, train or bus journeys.

4. Cover for some COVID-19-related events

If you or one of your travelling companions’ contracts Coronavirus (COVID-19) during your overseas holiday, and have to cancel the rest of your trip, then your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses may be covered if you have selected the Explorer Plan.

You’ll need to ask your treating doctor for a report stating the diagnosis of COVID-19, as well as a pathology report or public health statement indicating a positive COVID-19 result.

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 within the 72-hour waiting period after being issued with your Certificate of Insurance, then your non-refundable travel expenses may not be covered.

What you should consider when buying travel insurance for a trip to Croatia.

Always exciting and beautiful, Croatia has enjoyed a surge in tourism in the last decade, especially in the summer. Croatia has incredible national parks, such as those in Krka and Northern Velebit, a vibrant capital, Zagreb, and picturesque beaches on the Adriatic coast.

While you dream of exploring the popular TV show locations in Dubrovnik, take in the bustling restaurants and bars of Split, or delve into the history and museums located in Zadar, you may want to consider some travel insurance for any unexpected events that may occur.

Lost, stolen or delayed baggage cover

It can throw a spanner in the works to arrive in Zagreb and find yourself alone at the baggage carousel, watching it go around waiting for your bags to appear. If you're bags get lost in transit, or are stolen or damaged along the way, baggage insurance may be able to help. 

Note: all travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary, depending on what's happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose and any options or upgrades you buy.

World Nomads may offer cover (up to the policy limits) for loss, theft or damage to baggage or personal items depending on your specific situation, see below:

  • Bags stolen or damaged: as soon as you’ve realized your bags have been stolen or damaged, please report it to the relevant authority (carrier, tour operator, accommodation provider). In the case of a theft, you’ll also need to report it to the local police or relevant authority, as theft is a crime. Insurance won’t cover bags or valuables that were left unattended; this includes if they were left unattended in a car (even if the car is locked). Remember to always keep originals or copies of your receipts if you need to make a claim.
  • Bags delayed: you may be covered if your bags were lost in transit. You’ll need to report the incident and get a Property Irregularity Report, or a similar official report, in writing and make a claim directly with the carrier first. You may be able to claim your expenses for any essentials you have to buy to keep you going until your bag turns up. You must get copies of all written reports, luggage checks and tickets, travel documentation and all correspondence with the carrier or service provider if you need to make a claim.

You may also need to take depreciation into account and some policies, depending on your country of residence and the plan you purchase, may also have an excess applicable to any claim made. Details on how depreciation works can be found in your policy.

Overseas medical insurance and cover for Coronavirus-related events

When traveling to Croatia, travel insurance may help if you become unwell or have an accident, especially in these uncertain times of traveling and dealing with Coronavirus (COVID-19). You don’t want to be left out of pocket if you have to visit a local doctor, go to hospital, need an urgent trip to the dentist, or even worse, have to be repatriated back to your country of residence.

Getting adventure sports coverage

World Nomads can support you on a variety of outdoor adventures, with coverage for more than 150 activities and sports. You may need to compare the Standard or Explorer plans to see which activity levels are covered on each plan. Depending on your country of residence, you may need to add activities to your policy for an additional fee.

Your plan may also have conditions of coverage. For example, you may be required to wear safety equipment, book a tour with a licensed tour operator, or stay within certain parameters of your sport: your treks may only be covered up to a certain elevation, or your scuba dives only to a certain depth.

Support for medical emergencies

Road safety on the Autobahn and in general

Road conditions can be tricky in Germany, especially if you’re planning a long road trip on the Autobahn. For example, Germany’s legendary Fairy Tale Route ("Märchenstraße") stretches for 600 kms from the town of Hanau in Central Germany all the way up to Bremen on the North Sea.

Some of our plans have damage collision waiver coverage for rental cars, depending on your country of residence, and whether you’ve chosen a Standard or Explorer plan. If you get into an accident, be sure to always get a report from the authorities, which you’ll need for your claim.

In a crisis, our Emergency Assistance Team is available 24/7 for referrals or locations of nearby hospitals, medical providers or pharmacies. The team can also help during an emergency if you’re having trouble with a language you don’t know.

Here are some of the things we don't provide cover for:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the policy wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Essential Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

What to look out for when traveling around France

  • Keep an eye on your gear 24/7: It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. You should also make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.
  • Baggage theft or loss: if you’re on a road trip and your rental car gets broken into, or your airline loses your bags, you may be able to claim to replace the item or claim for essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your bag to be returned.
  • Rental car coverage and road safety – France is the perfect place for a road trip, with so many different regions to explore. Available on our Explorer plan, we may cover your rental vehicle insurance excess, or the cost of repairing the rental vehicle if you’re involved in a motor accident or your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
  • Pickpockets: Whilst France is amongst the safest countries to travel to there is always the chance that you might end up being pickpocketed in a tourist hotspot. If your items are stolen travel insurance could help replace them.

What’s not covered

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything and there are some important general exclusions you should be aware of, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see travel.state.gov).
  • Unattended baggage or personal items, including any items left in a locked car overnight.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Participation in a sport or activity where you fail to adhere to the terms of coverage for listed sports or activities.
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

Tips for traveling in France

  • Always check the Visa requirements – depending on your Country of Residence you may require a Visa to visit France or any of the other Schengen countries.
  • Pack light – especialy if you’ll be traveling around France using public transport.
  • Book attraction tickets in advance – if you know your plans then consider booking ahead for popular tourist sites such as the Eiffel Tower, Palace of Versailles and the Louvre as tickets can sell out and some attractions require pre-booking.

We know Kiwi travellers can’t wait to travel again which is why we’ve added some Coronavirus (COVID-19) specific cover to our insurance plans, to help make it clear what COVID-19 related events our travellers may have coverage for. All our travel insurance plans include emergency medical and repatriation cover if you get sick with Coronavirus while abroad. Our Explorer plans also offer cover for some Coronavirus-related events with the Coronavirus travel costs benefit a new feature.

  • Standard and Explorer plans: Offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with Coronavirus (COVID-19) overseas – cover includes medical assistance, repatriation and hospitalisation benefits.

What do I do if I get COVID-19 before or during my trip?

If you need to cancel or cut short your trip because you or a member of your travelling party is diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner, or if your close relative in New Zealand is hospitalised or dies due to Coronavirus, these tips may be helpful, especially if you intend to make a claim.

  • Contact our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible – they can help direct you to local medical facilities if needed and help you understand your options.
  • Isolate! And seek the relevant medical attention.
  • If you haven’t left home yet and might need to cancel your trip – make sure you’ve got medical evidence of your diagnosis. This can include certification from your doctor that due to the COVID-19 diagnosis you are medically unfit to continue with your original travel plans, or an official PCR test. The diagnosis of Coronavirus must be made after your policy was purchased.
  • Don’t delay in the cancellation of your plans to maximise the opportunity of refunds from your providers.
  • Always keep receipts for any trip payments you make and, wherever possible, request written reports from providers or local authorities.
  • Follow New Zealand government and local advice – different countries have different rules. What’s okay in New Zealand may not be okay in the countries you visit. While some countries may be more relaxed in their COVID-19 protocols, others may be very strict in who they allow to enter.

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything, so make sure you’re careful with your planning and you read the Policy Document to make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not, as well as the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions. If you have any questions get in touch.

  • Does my insurance cover medical costs upfront or do I have to pay and claim later?
    Our international policies can offer cover for emergency overseas medical expenses and medical evacuation and repatriation following a serious injury or sudden illness; this includes coronavirus, subject to all policy terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions. However, if the plan you already purchased doesn’t include the benefit section ‘Coronavirus Travel Costs’ (which offers some cover for eight specific coronavirus-related events), contact us for assistance. We are not able to change the plan issued after purchase, but, provided you have not used your original policy, and do not need to make any claim, we may be able to assist with issuing a replacement policy and providing you with a refund of your original premium. It is important to remember that this would be a new policy, subject to the policy terms conditions and pricing in effect at the date it is issued and would not offer cover for any event that has already occurred.
  • What do I do if my test hasn’t come back in time, and I need to cancel my trip?
    If you need to cancel or rearrange your travel arrangements, even at the last minute, don’t delay in speaking with your airline or other travel providers to minimise any potential cancellation costs or fees.  If you booked through a travel agent, they may be able to assist you with this, too.  If you do need to make a claim, the cover available will depend on your individual circumstances, as well as the plan you have purchased. For us to assess if cover can apply, you’ll need to submit a claim along with all supporting documentation. Remember, if you are required to take a test prior to travel, it is important to allow sufficient time for results to come back.
  • Why don't you cover ongoing treatment at home?
    Cover may be available if you are unfit to travel due to contracting COVID-19, depending on the plan you have purchased, and the facts of your claim - check the policy you have purchased and if it has Coronavirus Travel Costs cover. We assess all claims on a case-by-case basis. Speak with your travel providers, you may be able to cancel or change your arrangements at no or minimal cost. If you booked through a travel agent, they may be able to assist you with this, too.  Please note, if you’re already travelling and need to make changes to a flight change or your accommodation, even at the last minute, don’t delay in speaking with your airline or provider.  If you can’t continue with your planned arrangements due to a positive diagnosis, simply not showing up could mean you forfeit your booking or incur additional fees when you may have been able to move your dates or times at no or minimal cost. If you booked through a travel agent, they may be able to assist you with this, too.
  • Do I need medical proof of my positive COVID-19 result if I need to cancel my trip?
    Yes. You will need to provide documentation to support the circumstances of your claim. We understand that the type of documentation you can provide may vary and assess every claim on a case-by-case basis. You should submit as much information as you’re able to along with your claim, this will help us to assess your claim in a timely manner and reduce the possibility that we may need to ask you for further information. Information you supply may include: - PCR Test demonstrating that at the time you were due to travel, you had an active case of COVID-19; - Proof you were subject to mandatory isolation at the time you were due to travel due to a registered RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) result; - Letter from medical practitioner confirming you are medically unfit to travel due to COVID; and - Don’t forget to contact your travel service providers as well, as you’ll also need to demonstrate that you have requested to refund or reschedule your arrangements, and what your out of pocket costs are. Remember, not all of our plans cover pre-trip cancellation for COVID-19. This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Bag snatched in Latvia.

It was my final day in Riga, Latvia. In my small bag I keep all my valuables, because hostels can't always be reliable with safekeeping. It contained my new GoPro, Iphone, digital camera, laptop and hard drive, plus my emergency money (200 euros). I planned on using my cameras and computer for editing later that afternoon. The coast was amazing and, as it got late, I decided to take the train back to Riga city. As I was getting off the train, down the vertical steep steps, I had my bag snatched off my shoulder. In seconds, the doors closed and the train pulled off. Telling authorities on the platforms immediately, they could not assist and referred me straight to the police. Feeling helpless, I went to the police where I was kept for hours, because of English barriers and translations of documents. I walked out just after midnight with my report. A day trip I won't forget soon.
