Travel Insurance for a trip to Asia

Travelling to Asia? With half the world to explore, there's a lifetime of adventure just waiting for you.

Travel insurance in Asia

Making up almost 30% of the world’s land mass, Asia is made up of a diverse range of countries, cultures and people. From the snow-capped mountains of Nepal to the tropical beaches of Indonesia, and ancient temples in South Korea to bustling street markets in Malaysia, Asia is a must-visit destination whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a deeper connection with culture and tradition.

What's covered?

Depending on your Country of Residence and the plan you’ve selected some of the key benefits on our policies include:

  • Emergency overseas medical: if you become sick or injured during your trip around Asia your policy may cover you for overseas medical expenses, up to the policy limits and when agreed by us.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: if you’re seriously injured or ill, our cover includes (if deemed medically necessary) evacuation to transport you to the nearest medical treatment facility. Repatriation back to your Country of Residence for medical treatment. Medical repatriation is subject to approval from the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team
  • Travel delays/interruption: if your trip is interrupted due to an insured event. Depending on your Country of Residence and which plan you’ve selected you may be covered for your non-refundable, pre-paid transport and accommodation expenses.
  • Adventure, work, study and volunteering: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences so you can have fun adventuring your way around Asia’s mountains, waterways, cities and skies.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events: to find out what cover applies to you, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all the details, including benefit limits, terms and conditions, and exclusions.

With World Nomads, you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or while you're traveling (waiting periods apply); it’s entirely up to you.

Travel insurance tip: if you’re traveling alone around Asia and are unable to handle an emergency or a medical repatriation by yourself, depending on your Country of Residence, we may send one of our World Nomads team members to accompany you home. You can read how we helped one of our travelers who was in Koh Samui in this scenario.

What to consider when traveling around Asia

In most cases, traveling overseas goes without a hitch. But having the right travel insurance can take the added stress out of travel if things don’t go to plan. Below are just some key areas we offer cover for and that may come in handy while you travel around Asia.

Multi-Destination Trips

If you’re backpacking your way around Asia, travel insurance can cover medical emergencies and evacuation, stolen items, and more than 150 adventures, sports and activities including volunteering and working, including for digital nomads.

If you’re traveling to multiple countries, World Nomads can help with:

  • Translation and interpreting services in case of an emergency
  • Physician referrals
  • Pre-trip information

Families and travel insurance

Travelling as a family can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and there’s no shortages of options to explore in Asia, be it exploring the Grand Palaces in Seoul, exploring Kyoto in Japan which has more than 4,000 historical structures, shrines, and temples, or visiting Orangutans in Sabah.

Our policies can help cover you and your family for medical emergency, pregnancy, Covid, trip interruption, and provide 24/7 worldwide emergency assistance. Cover includes two adults and up to eight dependents on one policy.

What is a dependent?

Dependents: your financially dependent children or grandchildren who normally reside with you and who are in full time education, are 17 years old or younger at the time you buy and extend your policy, are traveling with you on your trip, and are listed as covered on your Certificate of Insurance.

Adventure and activity time

Depending on what plan you choose and your Country of Residence, you may be covered for more than 150 activities including trekking Mount Kinabalu National Park in Malaysia, hitting the ski slopes in Kyoto Japan, surfing the waves at Canggu, and much more. You can find the full list of covered activities in the Policy Wording.

If you intend on riding a scooter or motorbike whilst in Asia, be sure to check the licensing and local laws for the country you’re going to and the Policy Wording. You’ll also need to use a helmet if you plan to get on a motorbike or scooter while in Asia, as you won’t be covered otherwise.

World Nomads offers two plans to protect you when traveling in Asia  – Standard and Explorer. Each policy provides different levels of coverage depending on what you need:

  • The Standard Plan covers a range of benefits and has lower coverage limits.
  • The Explorer plan covers all the benefits of the Standard plan, with larger coverage limits and more benefits.

What to look out for when traveling around Asia

  • Severe weather: some parts of Asia can experience four seasons in one day, and some destinations are prone to natural disasters. If your trip is interrupted or cancelled as a result of severe weather, you may be able to claim.
  • Keep an eye on your gear 24/7: It’s very important that you NEVER leave your valuables out of sight. You should also make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with — passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets — and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.
  • Baggage theft or loss: if the airline loses your bags, you may be able to claim to replace the item or claim for essential clothing and toiletries while you wait for your bag to be returned. Our policies can also offer cover rental vehicle excess.
  • Pickpockets and scams: petty theft can be common in some parts of Asia. If your items are stolen travel insurance could help replace them. Also, be aware of scams around South-East Asian countries. The most common scams usually involve taxis or tuk-tuk drivers, or money exchange kiosks. When traveling around in Southeast Asia, always negotiate the price and be clear on what the price covers.

What's not covered?

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything and there are some important general exclusions you should be aware of, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions – see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the U.S. Department of State (see state.gov).
  • Unattended baggage or personal items, including any items left in a locked car overnight.
  • If you don’t follow your doctor’s instructions or what we or the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team advise you to do.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed or failing to adhere to the terms of coverage for listed sports or activities.
  • Being intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.

Handy tips for traveling in Asia

  • Always check the Visa requirements – some Asian countries may require you to have at least 6 months validity on your passports and some may require Visas that can take several weeks to organise.
  • Check the season, especially in Southeast Asia. Will you be traveling in the rainy or dry season? Be aware of how this may affect your travels.
  • Look after your health by having the appropriate vaccinations, taking your own medications from home, bringing insect repellent and checking out the latest health advice from the World Health Organisation.

You can also check out our articles if you need the latest safety travel alerts.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

True Claims Stories

“A motorcycle came from behind me and stopped next to me, so I stopped walking. Two people wearing helmets were on the motorcycle. The driver was gesturing although I didn't know why, I didn't hear him/her say anything. I felt a slight pull on my bag and on my backpack strap, and then the motorcycle rode away out of sight. The motorcycle passenger had taken my bag. The strap of the bag must have been cut. I couldn't see a license plate. I continued to my hotel and reported the theft to the police the next day.”

Travel Insurance for a trip to Africa

The African continent with its 54 countries is ripe for outdoor adventure. Check out our travel tips and more.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Africa, there’s nowhere else on the planet like it. Renowned for being the birthplace of civilisation, the world’s second largest continent draws Kiwis to its shores in their droves, most of them seeking rich culture, incredible landscapes, and of course wildlife encounters.

• What's covered
• What are the benefits travel insurance may provide when visiting Africa?
• What to look out for when travelling around Africa?
• What's not covered?

What's Covered

At World Nomads we have been on the wrong end of bags going missing, cancelled flights, and unexpected illness or injury, which can slow us down or halter our trip completely.

Our plans - whether you opt for a Standard of Explorer policy - offer cover (up to the benefit limits) for:

  • Overseas emergency medical
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation
  • Lost or delayed baggage
  • Travel delay/interruption
  • Cover for 150+ activities, sports, and experiences.
  • Cover for Coronavirus-related events.

Remember: Make sure you’ve selected the right travel insurance plan for your specific needs. With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online while enroute or after arriving at your destination.

Travel insurance tip: many countries may require proof of vaccination before they can enter, and some have introduced visas and travel insurance minimum requirements. Make sure you’ve got the required proof of any vaccinations so you can present them while travelling overseas.

What are the benefits travel insurance may provide when visiting Africa?

We all know that Kiwis love to travel, and they don’t mind if it takes a couple of hours or 24 to get there. Whether you’ve earmarked Africa for a savannah sojourn with the family or as a six-month volunteer adventure on your own, travel insurance should be considered for so many reasons:

  1. Medical Emergencies
Soaring over the Masai Mara grasslands in a hot-air balloon or walking over the Victoria Falls knife-edge bridge are unforgettable thrills, but they’re not exactly risk-free. A rolled ankle or a bout of malaria can feel worse when it happens in a remote place or a small village.

If you’re a World Nomads policy holder your cover can help cover emergency accidents and illness when the worst happens (say, a twisted ankle that stops your walking safari through Botswana’s Okavango Delta in its tracks). And you also have access to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, handy when you need to translate your Rwandan doctor’s advice or find the nearest quality hospital.

  1. Weather-related trip delay, trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage
Weather patterns across Africa can range from the unusual (think snowstorms in South Africa that had elephants, giraffes, and rhinos wandering in a de facto snow globe) to the downright dangerous (monsoons and whipping winds that can lead to death in equatorial areas).

At its best, such extreme weather can lead to unexpected days indoors spent by a crackling fire at your lodge. At its worst, you could endure safety woes, delayed tours, or cancelled flights. If you have a World Nomads policy, you can breathe a little easier knowing you may have trip cancellation, trip interruption or trip delay coverage for some of these situations. Read your policy for more details and scan for the sections in the Policy Document that mention severe weather or natural disasters.

  1. Carjacking, pickpocketing, and other crimes
Be sure to check local government travel advisories regarding advice to reconsider visiting parts of Africa that are currently experiencing civil unrest and violent crime and kidnapping. You can also check out the World Nomads’ latest alerts for Africa.

If you’re the victim of a robbery during your travels, you may be able to be reimbursed for the loss of your belongings, up to the plan’s limits and the items' depreciated value. Don’t forget to keep your police report, keep original copies of receipts, and make a copy of important documents if you intend to make a claim. And note that cash currency and credit cards aren’t replaceable, so you’ll only want to carry what you need for the day.

What to look out for when travelling around Africa?

As wondrous and wild as the African continent is, there are a few things you should keep in mind when it comes to the benefits of travel insurance:

  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage cover: in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally lost, delayed, damaged or stolen, you may be able to claim your unexpected costs. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours, you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your Policy Document carefully as terms and conditions apply.
  • Electronic devices: In today’s tech-centric world, taking your gadgets on the road is as common as packing an extra pair of socks. World Nomads may be able to replace, repair or recover the costs of your personal tech devices when stolen, lost or damaged under your supervision. Benefits are available only after exhausting other sources of compensation, such as from your common carrier. Remember, we consider depreciation and wear and tear. Claims are subject to per item and total maximum benefit amounts.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events: World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions apply and vary between plans.
  • Adventure activity and sports cover when in Africa: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences worldwide – including backpacking, hiking, and hot-air ballooning, but not all are covered under every plan, you can read about the activities covered for New Zealand. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go.

What's not covered?

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything and there are some important general exclusions you should be aware of, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions - see the Policy Document for details.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Essential Travel’ warning issued by the New Zealand Government (see safetravel.govt.nz).
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

The information provided is of a general nature and is provided for information purposes only. It does not constitute financial advice in any form and should not be relied on as a substitute for obtaining professional advice that is specific to your circumstances. Travel Insurance for a trip to Africa

  • As featured in:

Africa is known as the Mother Continent, not just because it’s the oldest inhabited continent on Earth, but because it offers tourists the Mother of all travel experiences. Australia may have its own tourist drawcards, but that shouldn’t stop us from swapping Bondi for Botswana or Tasmania for Tanzania for a safari or for a once in a lifetime volunteer adventure.

But before you do decide to visit Africa, you should consider the benefits of travel insurance.

What's Covered

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Africa?

Australians are an adventurous bunch and like most travel junkies the farther away the better. Whether you’re planning a family trip to see the giraffe, zebra, and Victoria Falls in Zambia; have been training for a Mount Kilimanjaro trek with your mates; or have Africa in mind as part of a multi-country digital nomad jaunt, travel insurance should be considered for so many reasons, below are just a few:

  1. Medical Emergencies
Soaring over the Masai Mara grasslands in a hot-air balloon or walking over the Victoria Falls knife-edge bridge are unforgettable thrills, but they’re not exactly risk-free. A rolled ankle or a bout of malaria can feel worse when it happens in a remote place – such as a far-flung water hole, or a small village.

If you’re a World Nomads policy holder your cover can help cover emergency accidents and illness when the worst happens (say, a twisted ankle that stops your walking safari through Botswana’s Okavango Delta in its tracks). And you also have access to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, handy when you need to translate your Rwandan doctor’s advice or find the nearest hospital.

If you have a World Nomads policy, you may have trip cancellation, trip interruption or trip delay coverage for some of these situations. Read your policy for more details and scan for the sections in the PDS that mention severe weather or natural disasters or contact us for more information.

  1. Carjacking, pickpocketing, and other crimes
Be sure to check for local government travel advisories regarding advice to reconsider visiting parts of Africa that are currently experiencing civil unrest and violent crime and kidnapping. You can also check out World Nomads latest travel alerts for Africa.

If you’re the victim of a robbery during your travels, you may be reimbursed for the loss of your belongings, up to the plan’s limits and the items' depreciated value subject to claims assessment. Don’t forget to keep your police report, keep original copies of receipts, and make a copy of any important documents if you intend to make a claim. And note that cash currency and credit cards aren’t replaceable, so you’ll only want to carry what you need for the day.

What to look out for when travelling around Africa?

As wondrous and wild as the African continent is, there are some things you should keep in mind when it comes to the benefits of travel insurance:

  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage cover: in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally lost, delayed, damaged or stolen, you may be able to claim your unexpected costs. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours, you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your PDS carefully as terms and conditions apply.
  • Electronic devices: In today’s tech-centric world, taking your gadgets on the road is just as common and essential as packing an extra pair of socks. World Nomads may be able to replace, repair or recover the costs of your personal tech devices when stolen, lost or damaged under your supervision. Benefits are available only after exhausting other sources of compensation, such as from your common carrier. Remember, we consider depreciation and wear and tear. Any claims are subject to per item and total maximum benefit amounts.
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events: depending on your Country of Residence World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions apply and vary between plans.
  • Adventure activity and sports cover when in Africa: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences worldwide – including backpacking, hiking, and hot-air ballooning, but not all are covered under every plan, you can read about the activities covered for Australia. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go. Depending on the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy. Terms and conditions apply.

What's not covered?

Our policies aren’t designed to cover everything and there are some important general exclusions you should be aware of, including:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions - see the PDS for details.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the PDS or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies).
  • Travelling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Essential Travel’ warning issued by the Australian Government (see smartraveller.gov.au).
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your PDS in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Why should I consider travel insurance when visiting Africa?

As a team of globetrotters ourselves, we know that no matter the destination most travel junkies don’t mind if it takes a couple of hours or 24 to get there. Whether you’ve earmarked Africa for a savannah sojourn with the family or as a six-month volunteer adventure on your own, travel insurance may be able to help in several scenarios:

  1. Overseas medical emergencies
If you’re a World Nomads policy holder your cover can help cover emergency accidents and illness when the worst happens (like a twisted ankle that stops your walking safari through Botswana’s Okavango Delta in its tracks). And you also have access to the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team, handy when you need to translate your Rwandan doctor’s advice or find the nearest hospital.

At its worst, you could endure safety woes, delayed tours, or canceled flights. If you have a World Nomads policy, you can breathe a little easier knowing you may have trip cancellation, trip interruption or trip delay coverage for some of these situations.
Read your Policy Wording carefully as level of cover will depend on your country of residence and the plan you’ve selected. Your policy will also have its own section that has in-depth details related to natural disasters coverage.

  1. Carjacking, pickpocketing, and other crimes
Be sure to check for your government’s travel advisories regarding advice to reconsider visiting parts of Africa that are currently experiencing civil unrest and violent crime and kidnapping. You can also check out World Nomads latest travel alerts for Africa.
If you’re the victim of a robbery during your travels, you may be reimbursed for the loss of your belongings, up to the plan’s limits and the items' depreciated value subject to a claims assessment. Don’t forget to keep your police report, keep all your receipts, and make a copy for your claim. And note that cash currency and credit cards aren’t replaceable, so you’ll only want to carry what you need for the day.

What are the benefits of travel insurance when going to Africa?

As wondrous and wild as the African continent is, there are some things you should keep in mind when it comes to the benefits of travel insurance:

  • Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage cover: in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally damaged, delayed, lost, or stolen, you may be able to claim your unexpected costs. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours (more than 12 hours for US residents), you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your Policy Wording carefully as terms and conditions, and benefit limits apply.
Remember, we take into consideration depreciation and wear and tear, and claims are subject to per item and total maximum benefit amounts.
  • Cover for Coronavirus-related events: World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits, terms and conditions and exclusions apply and vary between plans.
  • Adventure activity and sports cover when in Africa: we cover more than 150 activities, sports, and experiences worldwide – including backpacking, hiking, and hot-air ballooning, but not all are covered under every plan. You can read about the activities covered. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go. Depending on your Country of Residence and the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy. Terms and conditions apply.

What's not covered?

When taking out insurance, understanding what’s not covered is just as important as what is covered. Here are some of the things we do not provide cover for:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions - see the Policy Wording for details.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the Policy Wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Any costs arising from your refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Essential Travel’ warning issued by your Country of Residence.
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Buy travel insurance away from home

Get cover by World Nomads, even if you're already on the road

1. Consider purchasing travel insurance while traveling

If you’ve arrived at your destination and you’ve forgotten to buy travel insurance before leaving your Country of Residence, don’t panic. The good news is that you can visit the World Nomads website to purchase a policy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Similarly, if your World Nomads travel insurance policy is due to expire during your overseas holiday, but you wish to keep traveling, you may be able to extend your existing policy or buy a new policy depending on your Country of Residence.

2. Always check the terms and conditions of your policy

You’ve just checked into your hotel and you’re itching to explore the local sights. The last thing you probably want to do is to sit in your hotel room and read through the fine print of an insurance policy. But it’s a smart idea to become familiar with the various limits, benefits, optional extras and upgrades, and the terms and conditions before you buy a policy, so there’s no surprises at claim time.

If you buy travel insurance while overseas, there is a 72-hour waiting period from the date that you receive your Certificate of Insurance, before your cover comes into effect. This means that you may not be covered for certain events or losses that happen during this waiting period.

However, if you have an accident and sustain a serious injury after being issued with your Certificate of Insurance, and before the 72-hour timeframe has lapsed, you may be covered for some expenses under your policy. Be sure to check your Policy Wording for the complete list of what’s covered and what isn’t covered depending on your Country of Residence.

If you have any questions about the terms and conditions on your policy, please get in touch.

3. Extend your policy for your overseas holiday

If your current travel insurance policy is due to expire soon, but you’re having too much fun and want to travel for longer, you can extend your existing policy rather than risk being without cover.

If you meet eligibility requirements, you may be able to extend your policy up to a maximum of 12 months from the policy start date, which is indicated on your Certificate of Insurance. This must be done prior to 11:59pm on the closing date of your current policy, based on the time and date in the capital city of your Country of Residence.

If you have any questions about purchasing travel insurance during your overseas holiday, please get in touch.

4. Need to know more?

All travel insurance plans are different, and cover will vary depending on what’s happened, your Country of Residence, the plan you choose, and any options or upgrades you buy. Your Policy Wording will always have the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions for what you’re covered for.

If you have any further questions about what’s covered and not covered, just ask us.

Travel insurance when visiting Ecuador

From Old Town Quito to the magnificent Galapagos, Ecuador has plenty to explore. Make sure you're covered.

    As featured in:

  • As featured in:

Ecuador is rich in culture, with historic cities, spectacular scenery and countless opportunities to get active. Exploring Ecuador's UNESCO historic centers in Quito and Cuenca, kayaking through the Amazon and hiking the Andes are all great ways to experience this country. Canadian travellers often consider the biodiverse Galapagos Islands to be the trip of a lifetime.

Emergencies can affect even the best-planned trip: natural disasters, strikes, unexpected illness and theft are just a few things that can derail your travels. You should consider travel insurance in case you need to recover losses resulting from unforeseeable events.

World Nomads may provide cover (up to the policy benefit limits) for:

World Nomads plans also offer 24/7 access to our dedicated Emergency Assistance Team.

What travel insurance cover should I look out for when travelling to Ecuador?

A travel insurance plan that includes trip cancellation and interruption coverage can help protect your trip investment; baggage cover can help you recoup some costs in case of bag delay or loss; and emergency medical can help if you get sick or injured while on the road.

World Nomads offers two plans to choose from: the Standard Plan and the Explorer Plan. Both plans include a range of benefits such as overseas emergency medical, baggage delay, trip cancellation and cover for more than 150 activities. Our Explorer Plan offers higher benefit limits. Travel insurance does not cover everything so be sure to read your policy wording to make sure it meets your needs.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption

World Nomads Travel Insurance may cover trip cancellation due to certain unforeseen circumstances. If there’s a death in your immediate family, or if you or a close family member becomes sick or injured and a doctor says you can’t travel to Ecuador, travel insurance may reimburse any unused, non-refundable, prepaid trip arrangements. The policy will list the covered risks for trip cancellation.

While you’re on the road, a World Nomads policy can provide important benefits. If you need to cut your trip short due to an emergency back home, your trip interruption benefits may reimburse costs for your return trip home plus any forfeited prepaid, unused, non-refundable trip expenses up to the limits shown in your policy documents.

For example, if prior to your policy start date you paid in advance for a nonrefundable guided hiking trip in the Galapagos, and you are unable to depart on the trip due to a covered reason, you may be reimbursed for this non-refundable and unused trip expense.

When filing a claim for either trip cancellation or interruption, you will need to submit documentation for all forfeited, non-refundable, prepaid trip costs and associated expenses.

Overseas emergency medical coverage

Canada and Ecuador do not have reciprocal healthcare agreements, so having travel insurance that covers emergency medical expenses is a good idea. If you become ill or injured while travelling in Ecuador without overseas emergency medical cover, any emergency medical or dental costs (or even worse, emergency evacuation back to Canada) will be at your expense.

Accidents and illness can happen on vacation, from food poisoning to twisting your ankle on the cobblestones in Quito or getting in the way of an angry sea lion on San Cristobal. A travel insurance plan which offers cover for emergency overseas medical expenses may help in unexpected situations.

For information on COVID-19 related cover, read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article.

Access to our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team when you need help

Having a medical emergency while travelling can be scary, but with a World Nomads travel insurance policy, you are not alone. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team can help you find appropriate medical care and offer translation services, liaise with doctors and even arrange upfront payment if required.

Some of the best tourist sites in Ecuador are remote. This is where our Emergency Assistance Team can help arrange emergency medical evacuation to the closest medical facility or repatriation back to Canada when medically necessary and approved in advance by us.

Delayed, lost, or stolen baggage

If you’re checking a bag, there’s always a chance it could take a detour en route to Ecuador. If your checked baggage is delayed for 12 hours or more by an airline or ground carrier, you may be able to claim reimbursement for essential personal items while you wait for your bags.

Lost or stolen baggage and belongings may also be covered; for example, a phone swiped from your bag in a crowded Quito market, or a bag permanently lost by an airline (with travel insurance cover being secondary to airline reimbursement).

To keep your belongings safe, use a concealed money belt or cross-body bag to hold your travel documents, valuables and money. It is also recommended to be mindful of your surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas.

If your bags or belongings are damaged or stolen, file an incident report with local authorities or your airline immediately. Where theft has occurred, this must be reported to the police. You’ll need this documentation and any relevant receipts when you make a claim.

Cover for 150+ activities and sports when in Ecuador

Ecuador boasts no shortage of opportunities to get active, from mountain biking the legendary Mama Rumi trail to rafting on the Quijos River. Surfing, snorkeling and hiking are just a few of the activities on offer in the Galapagos. World Nomads offers travel insurance cover for more than 150 adventure activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences. Be sure to read your policy documents carefully to ensure your chosen activities are covered. You will need to add all the activities you plan on participating in to your policy during the purchase path.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything – so make sure you know what you’re covered for. Some things we don’t cover include but are not limited to:

  • Losses caused by negligent policyholder behavior, so no selfies in roped-off areas or riding a scooter without a helmet.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Not following orders of your treating physician or Emergency Assistance Team.
  • Participation in activities or sports not listed in the plan you have purchased.
  • Stolen, lost or damaged personal belongings that were left unattended.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions about your coverage, just ask us.

What’s covered?

With World Nomads you can buy travel insurance as soon as your trip is locked in or when you’re already in Morocco (waiting periods apply), it’s entirely up to you.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each provides different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need.

Here are some of the highlights of our cover:

  • Coverage for extended stays
  • World Nomads’ family plans
  • Overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses
  • Cover for 150+ activities, sports, and experiences
  • Unexpected trip cancellation

  • 24/7 worldwide Emergency Assistance.

What should I look out for when traveling to Morocco?

As intriguing as this North African nation is, there are some things you should have in mind to ensure your holiday is memorable for all the right reasons.

Here are some tips on how to make the most of your trip:

  • Lost, stolen, damaged or delayed baggage cover: in the unfortunate event that your luggage or personal items are accidentally damaged or stolen, you may be able to claim your unexpected costs. In addition, if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours (more than 12 hours for US residents), you may be entitled to replacement costs. Check your policy wording carefully as terms and conditions apply.
  • Cover for overseas medical emergencies and cover for Coronavirus-related events: depending on your Country of Residence, World Nomads offers cover for some Coronavirus-related events to help if your trip is derailed by COVID-19. Check your policy carefully as benefit limits apply and vary between plans.
  • Adventure activity and sports cover when in Morocco: we cover more than 150 activities, sports and experiences worldwide – including backpacking, kayaking, hiking, and bungee jumping. However, not all are covered under every plan, you can read about the activities covered for your Country of Residence. Many activities also have specific conditions and exclusions you should read up on before you go. Depending on your country of residence and the level of cover you’ve chosen, you may need to add activities to your policy. Terms and conditions apply.

What’s not covered?

Here are some of the things we do not provide cover for:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions –see the policy wording for details.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or agreed by World Nomads where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's travel insurance for medical emergencies)
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ or in some cases ‘Avoid Essential Travel’ warning issued by the government in your Country of Residence.
  • Expenses you have not made every reasonable attempt to recover from the carrier, accommodation provider, booking or travel agents, any compensation scheme, or other source.

Travel insurance and safety tips when visiting Morocco

As fascinating as Morocco is, following some tips on how to stay safe and make the most of your travel insurance policy will help.

Petty crime in popular Moroccan hotspots

Wandering through the streets of Marrakesh, Casablanca, Tangier, Fez, Agadir and Essaouira can be an insightful experience, but you must keep your wits about you and ensure you always have your valuables in sight. Bag snatching and pickpockets often target these popular tourist areas, and women, if traveling alone, may be the subject of unwanted attention. We offer cover if you're after travel insurance for your tech gear and other high-value items. To upgrade the cover for high-value items, list them on your policy and pay the additional premium.

Terrorism and protests

Terrorist cells do target the Maghreb region of North Africa which includes Morocco, so it’s crucial that you monitor the media. You should always take government warnings and travel alerts seriously. These groups often seek out populated areas and can also be active in mountain regions.

Demonstrations are also possible, and it’s worth bearing in mind that public protests and events that draw large groups of people can turn violent. The status of the Western Sahara has been an issue of dispute, and tensions can boil over. To avoid being caught up in a protest, take care on days of national or commemorative significance and be extra vigilant on weekends, especially around the time of Friday prayers.

World Nomads offers trip delay coverage, and trip interruption may apply if your trip can’t be completed or it’s necessary to return home early. If you actively involve yourself in a protest, you are putting yourself and your insurance cover at risk.

Avoid drinking / swimming in freshwater

Some waterborne and foodborne diseases are common across Morocco, so travelers are advised to only drink treated, filtered or bottled water, to avoid ice cubes and not to swim in fresh water.

Contaminated water, which can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, can lay you up for days, the most serious outcome of which is dehydration. This can be deadly, so don’t rely on your own instincts, instead seek medical advice immediately.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team will be able to give you advice on what to do, help locate suitable medical facilities (particularly in remote areas) and will monitor your medical treatments to make sure you are given proper care.

Our policies can offer overseas emergency medical benefits. Check your policy to see what the maximum amount of coverage you have, as it will vary depending on your home country and the plan you’ve selected. If you want to claim your medical expenses, be sure to keep records and receipts of your doctor’s visits and medical treatment, and any other documentation to support your claim.

When to visit Morocco?

If you want to avoid large crowds, the best time to visit Morocco is autumn (September to November) or early spring (March to April). If you are traveling in summer, then the best months are June to August. You should know there will be bigger crowds in the summer months, especially if you plan to visit some of its seaside hot spots such as Tangier, Essaouira and Taghazout.

Traveler Tip 1make copies of all key documents you’ll be traveling with – passport, ID, travel insurance, receipts, vouchers, addresses, transportation tickets – and keep them separate from the originals while abroad so you’ll have backups and proof of purchase if anything happens.

Traveler tip 2: if you’re a victim of theft, to file a claim, be sure you get a police report or other written documentation such as a property irregularity report from your common carrier.

Traveler tip 3:  many countries may require proof of vaccination before you can enter, and some have introduced visas and travel insurance minimum requirements. Do your research before you go as travel insurance does not cover expenses you incur because you don’t have the correct visas to enter your intended destination(s). Make sure you have the required proof of any vaccinations so you can easily produce them while traveling overseas.
